1  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Completed Projects / Modified Tibetan Prayer Flag for an old friend on: November 01, 2016 07:26:53 PM
A friend/mentor/mother figure/so many things passed away last year. I haven't had a lot of time to process it; this last year has been full of work, 2 moves, and having a baby. More and more lately, I've felt a pull to create something for her- for Kathy. She was an artist and her medium was tie dye/silk embroidery. Exquisite things really. I chose a batik fabric that reminded me of her, the color orange (her favorite), and a lotus blossom (symbolic of beauty and rebirth).

I love this! Are you planning on displaying it somewhere?

Definitely displaying it somewhere! Have to figure out the best way to back it first though... and then find a spot.

What a cool idea. Are those shoelaces you used for the stitches?

Nope! I used cheap yarn. I doubled it on the needle, so each stitch has a total of 4 strands. Pretty hard to push through on the corners where 4 stitches met, but gives a nice, full look.

This is the second large cross stitch piece I've made- it's fun, surprisingly challenging, and I think it turned out beautifully. I created a pattern that has a slight Scandinavian feel to it in deference to my heritage. It's on a pegboard that I spray painted gold and the yarn is from my stash.

Funny story. I made a project for my mom for this coming Christmas- She has 4 kids, so I got all my siblings and their families to trace their hands and I embroidered the outlines on a canvas panel, one for each family. My oldest brother was being really slow about sending his and his family's hands, so I shamed him in an email (all in good fun, really). In retaliation, he sent me the outlines alright, and included one of his middle finger. What is a crafter to do??? Embroider it and send it back to him nicely framed? Yep.

Who knows? Maybe it'll be an heirloom someday... a tribute to our family's smart-assery.

Isn't it wonderful how crafting can bring people together?  Seeing your beautiful new room has turned this thread in to a Wisconsin love fest!

One of my old pastors (he semi-retired...decided to go to a smaller congregation) is the pastor at one (not sure if there's more than one!) of the Lutheran churches on Washington Island.  He is awesome and it was sad to see him go...

Also, my boyfriend is from the LaCrosse area, and his mom lives in Onalaska.

That's so cool about your old pastor!  There is only one Lutheran church on the Island- Trinity.  My brother is actually the youth pastor at Bethel church on the Island.  And yay Wisconsin!  Smiley

This is a great room!!! Nice to see a fellow Wisconsinite (?).  I with you ScrappySue. I have tons of fabric and I save the scraps to make mini items. In addition, I have wood pieces, baskets, paints and ... so I can't share pics of my room either. Embarrassed I keep trying to organize it but then I start working on another room and I never get finished. Space limitation is the ONLY downside of being a crafter if one has to be identified. Grin

Haha, yes, space limitation will get us all the time!  I am from Wisconsin.  I've moved a lot, but Door County will always be home.  Now, I live on the west side of the state, near La Crosse.  Where are you from?

Love the room!  So nicely organized...if only my craft room looked that good.  Can only do so much when you live in an apartment, though... Sad

Also, you're from Door County?  My grandmother grew up in Sturgeon Bay!  (and moved to the Madison area in her teens...which was in the '40s)

Thank you for the compliments!  And yes, I am from Door County... Washington Island to be exact (as northeast as you can go before you hit Michigan).  My mom still lives in Sturgeon Bay, and we spend every Christmas there!  I love it, it will always be home.
