1  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing in General: Discussion and Questions / Re: Smocking? on: February 24, 2012 12:34:14 PM
Oooh, a technique I haven't tried yet! I'll have to try it out.
2  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing in General: Discussion and Questions / Re: how do you organize/ keep patterns? on: February 24, 2012 12:33:21 PM
Honestly nowadays I buy most of my patterns in PDF format, so I'm not too good at keeping up with the paper copies. Being able to reprint them whenever I want makes me less cautious.
3  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing in General: Discussion and Questions / Re: Newbie needs help [learning to sew] on: February 24, 2012 12:29:18 PM
What kind of patterns were you using for these? Honestly, steer clear of tissue paper patterns as a newbie. They are a pain in the butt.

I agree with using tutorials from here and from other blogs. Those are usually broken down into steps and usually include a ton of visuals.

When I first learned to sew, I stopped.
When I learned to sew a second time, I stopped.

When I learned to sew a THIRD time, I stopped.

Finally, I decided I simply wasn't going to stop anymore. I was going to make as many horrible looking projects as it took to finally make it right!

Go into it with the mentality that each seam you have to rip, every stitch you have to redo, every project you have to start from scratch, just gets you closer to perfecting the art.

You can do it!
4  CLOTHING / Clothing for Kids: Completed Projects / A Cute Little Bandana Dress on: March 15, 2011 05:44:32 PM

I made my daughter a cute little bandana dress today! It had been awhile since I had fired up the sewing machine, and I actually think mine might be on the outs. Still love the finished product though!

I also posted about it on my bloghttp://www.familyfriendlyfrugality.com/2011/03/tot-tuesday-make-your-own-frugal-bandana-dress/

aww you ladies are all so nice!

#2 is just a little peasant top with bloomers. I made a basic peasant top off of some tutorials I found online and than took an existing pants pattern I had and chopped them up and added elastic to the legs to make them bloomers

#6 is my husband's old shirt! I also made it like a peasant top, just traced over the fabric with the buttons down the center front. I tried it on her and it still seemed a bit too big, so I added two rows of elastic thread to the waistband. That was my first try with elastic in my sewing machine. It was a bit frustrating, but I love love love the look.

I'm so excited to share all of these with you. I've been looking at this forum for quite awhile and always too chicken to try to make clothes on my own. I started sewing when I decided back in January that I wanted to make my daughters birthday outfit and haven't stopped since!!!

Thanks so much for being an inspiration to me!
