Need a rainy day craft to do with your kids? Why not make a few mice from chenille stems (pipe cleaners if you're old) and play until the sun shines! They are quick to create, about 5 minutes tops.
Here's how you do it:
3 beige pipe cleaners (or any color you like. Who says mice can't be purple? And yes, there are only 2 in my pic.)
1 red pipe cleaner (if you want to give them tiny hats like these guys
1 white pipe cleaner
Marker with a tapered end (for forming the mouse body)
Pink marker (for nose)
Black cardstock for eyes or black felt for eyes
Twisty Bendy pliers (I don't know what those pliers are called, something used in jewelry making maybe, but Twisty Bendy Pliers is what I call it) Or just use your fingers.
Let's get to making some mice!
Wrap one beige pipe cleaner around the end of a marker 5 times. Cut off excess with Twisty Bendy pliers and save that extra bit.
With a second pipe cleaner, make a loop in the center and bend the end upward. It is like balloon twisting! What is it going to be? (I already spoiled the surprise. It is still a mouse)
Pinch the loop closed and make a bend at the end. Hmmm, this isn't looking much like a mouse...(it will, I promise.)
See that sticky-uppy piece? Wrap it around your squished loop, all the way to the very end of the bend. Tuck that nasty sharp edge inside the bend or fold it back. Toys that make us bleed are no fun.
Remember that pipe cleaner you twisted? Take that and thread it onto the weird piece you just made and stop when you get to the bend of the loop. (lindyv321, that pic is for you.)
Bend the end in a curvy shape and don't forget to also bend back that sharp pokey end of danger. I see a mouse! Sort of.
Using third beige pipe cleaner, push it between the bottom two twists of the mouse's body and out the other side until 1.5" is sticking out. This will be the hind legs. Measure about 1.5" on the either side then cut off the excess. So now it looks like a spring with a spout and pump handle with an odd straight bit at the bottom. Bend one straight bit up and around in a curve, then make another bend to form the foot. Repeat for other side and don't forget the pokey bits of doom need to be bent back.
Cut off a 1.5" piece of pipe cleaner and push it between the top two twists in the body. Bend forward for arms and I know you know about those ends.
Cut off another small piece, stick it through the head, then twist each end in a circle using Twisty Bendy pliers. Mine looks way derpy right now, as only one ear has been made and he looks a bit run-over. Poor guy.
Nearly there! Tuck the nasty pokey end of the white pipe cleaner under the twists on top of the head. (ooh, a stripe!)
Bend it along the head, press it into the neck, and keep shaping it along the belly. Cut off the pipe cleaner a little longer than the belly and tuck the no no end inside the body.
Punch out tiny paper eyes using a small hole punch or cut small circles from felt for eyes. Or use beads. It's your mouse, do what you want. Color a cute pink nose and you finally have a mouse! Yippee!
Make a mischief of mice and put them everywhere!!!! Well, maybe not there.
