2181  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / Re: The Super Sea Swap! sign ups closed - send outs may 30th (note new date) on: May 09, 2008 09:50:50 AM
In the Pacific Northwest, with all our microbreweries, we do all beer types from all over the world!  Smiley

I did love the local beers I had while in the UK last summer, though. Nummy.  I'd pop into a pub and ask the locals what they liked best, as I was a tourist, and I'd get great reccomendations.  (A lot of times I'd get FREE beer, too! woo hoo hoo!)

Mmmmmmmmm, free beer.........

I love the panda peeking out the top of the jar!  Smiley

I just kind of said "ulp!" this morning, when I realized how quickly the send-by date is approaching.  Smiley  I had to sit myself down and tell myself: Time to stop thinking of even more possibilities, and get craftin'!  Heh.

I had a lovely day today, though no crafting - I took my Mom out for a girl's day out!  We drove around some new neighborhoods, then went to a movie (Leatherheads - we *loved* it!), then went for tea&pastries at a little cafe', then went birthday card shopping for some relatives, then walked along a boardwalk in a nature area, then stopped by a lighthouse on Puget Sound (and I wished I could grab some driftwood but it's illegal!), and then drove her home where she is going to whup my behind in some board games.  Smiley

I am having so much fun thinking up ideas for the Sea Swap. SO FUN. I hope hope hope they all turn out.  Smiley

Aye, thank ye Penlowe and RT, and my lovely swap partner, I ***LOVE*** the jar I got!  I keep opening it up and rifling through it, pulling out things to use.

I used my fused bag on an outing and no one there know what the HECK they were.  It was really fun showing everyone what it was composed of, and telling how I got it!  Smiley

Awwww, the radish is so neat!  And one MUST poke the bunny tail...
2188  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Completed Projects / Re: Traditional Woolie for Puzzle Pirates (image heavy!) on: May 03, 2008 04:49:47 PM
Heh - in my official contest entry post, I did include "cat hair" in the materials list.  Smiley   Even when she's not moving, you can see hair just poof off of her!

Oh!  And in the photo with my cat?  She's ON TOP of the *pin cushion*.  That couldn't have been comfortable, but when I went to move her, she complained about having to move!

I really did have a fantastic time with this, so educational in not only techniques and such, but what parts of it I enjoyed and what threads to avoid (grrrrrrrrr shiny seductive thread that doesn't stay put!).
2189  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Completed Projects / Traditional Woolie for Puzzle Pirates (image heavy!) on: May 03, 2008 04:13:58 PM
So, I'm addicted to Puzzle Pirates (an online game).  Frequently there are out-of-game contests that have in-game prizes.  Recently, a Woolie contest was held - make traditional-like wooly featuring a Puzzle Pirates ship.

Traditional Woolies were needlework pictures created by mariners, featuring a ship and some scenery.  Basically, using whatever fibers you want (but traditionally wool yarn for most of it), cover the entire surface with fiber. Nothing should show through.  They can be incredible intricate, just amazing!

Some wooly/woolie sites:

I decided to give it a go!

My finished item (the ruler & name are required in photos for entry in the contest).  I went with a picture of a War Brig firing in battle near an island. I used a mix of wool yarn and embroidery floss (as was allowed).

My materials being inspected by Quality Control:

First I sketched a design on paper, drew it on the fabric, and then basted outline stitches on my drawing:

Partway done:

Closeup of a cannon firing, with explosion and smoke:

Hanging on the wall: (it doesn't fit *in* any frame I have, so I wrapped it around an existing painting... it needs better tension to be seen properly)

I had a lot of fun, learned a bunch about the backing fabric, embroidery, threads (ie, love the look of the shiny rayon floss, HATE using it) and needles and Woolies, and I'm going to be doing a whoooooole lot more of these!

Yay!  So many ideas!  My partner and I are already burning up the PM system with questions. Smiley
