Hey Bakames! Good for you for attempting a corset! I highly recommend grommets. You don't have to use a grommeting gun or pliers, you can get a pretty cheap alternative, which is just a little bullet shaped anvil that you use with a hammer to spread the back of the grommet once you have it through. You'll have to start the hole with a sharp pair of sewing scissors, but it won't be too bad. If you want, you can always cover the grommets later with embroidery floss, so they aren't glaringly metal on your nice corset.
I guess your other option, if you aren't making the kind of corset that needs to lace up, is to use hook & eye tape, but I really think the grommets are your best best.
