61  Yeti pincushion - one little pincushion swap in CHALLENGE 86 ENTRIES by Annchen on: May 01, 2013 03:05:15 PM
I made this pincushion for bambam91 in the One little pincushion swap. One of her favourite themes was cryptids and mythical creatures and she had several cute Yeti on her pinterest, so I had to try to make one! It was so much fun designing her Cheesy

She's freeform crocheted and then fluffed up with a dog brush before I added the safety eyes and felt details. The bottom is felt and cardboard to make sure it can sit on a flat surface without wobbling around. Most of the shaping comes from the way I cut the cardboard, but I added a few stitches under the arms to give them a bit more definition.

The pins are shrinky dink pins I made (The tutorial I learned from: http://weewonderfuls.typepad.com/wee_wonderfuls/2005/08/tutorial_for_sh.html). Super easy craft, and a nice way to get pins that match the pincushion. For this Yeti - multicoloured snowflakes.

It's spring in Sweden, so this is a Swedish Yeti changing into it's summer coat. No big white fluffy fur... Luckily she now lives in a warmer climate so the thin fur coat shouldn't be a problem.

The diversity of awesome pincushions from this swap was amazing, so you should really check out the rest of the gallery! https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=422386.0#axzz2S56b9pVw

It's the same principle as for amigurumi. You need to use a fairly small hook to get a dense fabric without stuffing poking out of the holes. It matters what kind of stuffing you use too... If it's too fluffy (more like pillow stuffing) it's a royal pain to try to stuff densely, but luckily I had some denser stuffing in my stash too. Little yeti has a cardboard base covered in felt, since I wanted her to be able to stand without falling over. Since the bottom was flat no matter what I did I could save a tiny opening and stuff as much stuffing as I could possibly fit in there. Cheesy

The cardboard base helped with the shape too. There are just two stitches under the "arms", the rest of the shaping comes from the shape of the base.

It was hard to take a decent photo of the pins. They're shrinky dink pins so the surface is shiny.

You can sort of see them here too.

The fur was fun. I bought a dog brush and then went crazy with it. Acrylic fluff everywhere! But it was worth it Smiley

Here's my pincushion with extras from the pincushion swap. Apart from the awesome pincushion there's also felt coasters from my pinterest, and adorable paper stars. Bambam91 was nice enough to include lots of australian treats. The Timtams are nearly gone... There was also a book with some australian slang, but it was hiding when I was snapping the pictures.

Another picture of the pincushion. Just because Tongue

Whew... I should probably vacuum before our guests arrive, but I decided to upload my pictures instead *shifty eyes*

I'm the lucky owner of this pretty pincushion! I love the crazy grass Smiley The flowers are actually pins. Hubby wanted to steal it for his model building pins, but luckily he didn't... The glue residue might cause things to melt.

The back of the toadstool house with a few of the extras hiding in the background. I'll post them in the private swap gallery in a little bit! (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=418803.msg5026545#msg5026545)

65  Re: One little pincushion swap! Send-outs April 18 in ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED by Annchen on: April 13, 2013 12:01:58 PM
That makes me think of a pincushion my great grandmother owned. I thiiink my sister's got it now. Or it might be hidden somewhere in my craft room. Hidden in plain view! It's made from a can of beer I think. The lid is cut off, the sides sliced in 2-3 mm wide strips and the whole thing crafted into a rocking chair with the bottom as the seat with a padded pincushion for a seat cushion.

When I was younger I thought it looked like a toy and never realised it was meant to be a pincushion. (I think it was one of those "too nice to use" items so I never saw it with pins in.)

Really bad picture I snapped with my phone. Craftster insists on flipping it.

Great packages so far!

I thought lilyanka's package decided to take the scenic route to Sweden, but it turned out it travelled quickly and has been sitting in the post office for nearly two weeks Tongue I only realised when I got a reminder to go get it. Where the first notice went, I have no idea...

Here's the package she sent. A mug cozy (love the colours she chose!), owl stitch markers and some candy.

I don't know why, but craftster flips some photos when I upload them from my phone...

I put a tea bag in to show the pocket.

Action shot with tea in the glass and the pocket used for a lump of sugar instead... The little hand says "hand made"

Thank you!

I received from Koreena today!

Lots and lots of bath goodies! The soaps and lavender bag were packaged in a pretty basket, but a bottle in it had broken so I fished everything out before taking photos. Everything seems ok, and it all smelled great Smiley The soaps might be even more lavender scented now...

Thank you!

There! I think I managed to figure out the mature tagging too. I tagged them all, just in case Tongue

This is the beautiful package I received from justchelsea. The photos are a bit dark unfortunately.

Here's the loot, minus a candle she sent. We put it in the bedroom and I forgot to take it out for the photoshoot... It's scented and runs on batteries so it wont burn the house down if we forget it. Really nice little extra.

Everything was packed up really nicely in individual bags in the purple bag. It'll be perfect for toy storage and it's nice and fake-furry Smiley I wish you could feel the wrap, it's really nice and soft. Chlesea made it for me so my shoulders wouldn't get cold and it works really nicely.

There's also two pairs of pasties and a pair of awesome earrings, and the green bag is filled with lavender. Yum!

Close up on my favourite pair of the pasties. I like the chain detail!

Look at my earrings! They're so pretty Cheesy I need to try to take a less blurry photo I think...
