5  QUILTING / Quilting: Discussion and Questions / Re: pre-washing fabric on: July 29, 2007 01:36:47 PM
I only ever pre-wash cheap fabric. I almost exclusively use moda and other higher end fabrics when I make quilts, and I do not pre-wash. I have not had any problems with shrinkage or colors bleeding. When I started quilting several years ago, a woman who custom makes quilts for her customers commented that people want a new quilt, not a pre-washed one, so she doesn't pre-wash either. She said that she has never had any complaints. Shop local independent quilt shops for best quality!
6  QUILTING / Quilting: Discussion and Questions / Re: I am in love with this quilt - can I make if for my first project? on: July 29, 2007 01:20:55 PM
It is a really cute quilt. As noted above, it shouldn't be too difficult for a first quilt.

I enjoy actually sewing the quilt top; not so much the actual quilting part. But I have found that using a temporary spray adhesive to 'glue' the top and back to the batting is really helpful! (I use a type that is called 505 spray and fix) I usually use basting pins (curved safety pins) in addition to the adhesive.

Good Luck!!

It kind of helped me get started...I did not use a fortifier, well, actually this is weird but I mixed some white glue in the mix...figured it might help. I didn't have fortifier and didn't want to invest any more money at the time.

Love your projects! About how much white glue would you say that you added? Any info you could offer on hypertufa would be great as well!

Thanks!
