Title: Foreign Exchange Swap?
Post by: Banga on June 03, 2006 01:42:37 PM
I've seen lots of international swaps like "My Country Doesn't Have That!" around, and I'd love to try something similar. I'm moving from New England to Germany at the end of the summer and need some serious guidance. I am sure there are tons of crafty ppl there who could help me to become a Crafty German Goddess!
So the swap idea is this:
Pair up people from different countries to craft whatever one might need for a foreign exchange program: the newest slang, trends, fashions, music, foods, best places to go/things to do, etc. all put together into crafty goodness (like journals, guide books, tees, totes, jewelery, whatever)
So if I get paired with a gal from Germany, I'd make her all things Rhode Island (beach and lobster themes aplenty on jewelry or clothing, coffee syrup and Del's lemonade) and she's make me German inspired things.
What do you think?

LOVE IT!
I am going to do an exchange this summer (i will be here with my exchange student for july, then i will be in france with her and her family for august...) but  would love to participate anyway...what if it was not neccessarily partners? it could be a bit more like the wishlist swaps...or unconditional swaps...post what countries you are interested in learning more about, and they can snag you...you can snag them....and besides that...I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT RHODE ISLAND....living in Cali, i might as well be in another country! But I love the idea

That's a cool idea... If we can get some more people interested in this we'll see which way to go with it!

My best friend moved out to LA, so she's my only Cali connection! And from what I know, LA is like it's own planet compared to the rest of Cali! I'm dying to take a trip out to Napa Valley with her... just need to save some funds!

Post by: Banga on June 07, 2006 07:43:20 AM
Yay! I'm glad people are intersted! I'd need to be sure we have enough international ppl for this to fly, or else we' need to turn into a state exchange swap!
I'm thinking sign ups early July, send outs ealry August, since there are so many new swaps beginning right now! That also gives me time to finish my first swap and get feedback so that I can organize this one!
For all of you who add a post here, could you also let us all know where you are from? That would help gage how many matches we are making. Thanks!
Let's all cross our fingers for this swap!  :D

I'd be interested. I live in "Hicksville" Saskatchewan, Canada. I don't think anyone would want to do an exchange here as it's pretty much a ghost town. I could however focus on things that are more Canadian or dicectly related to my Province.  :) d

ooh! ooh! This sounds fun!
I am an Australian. I can send some really tacky Aussie stuff!
I'm sure I can find some god-awful tourist tat! Anyone interested in that? Or I can be classy if need be... but it's hard to make kangaroos classy...  :D

People buy moose poop jewelry?  Well, I guess.. people did buy recycled elephant dung paper in Sri Lanka.  It was great, you could send someone a lovely card and then on the back mention "oh BTW, you've been holding elephant poop this whole time!"

Ooh I'd be interested in this, and July/August would be good, I'm so busy for the rest of June that I've banned myself from signing up for things till July.

I'm from the UK, or to be a bit more precise, the north bit, just outside Manchester.

Title: Re: Foreign Exchange Swap?
Post by: geek-pride on June 13, 2006 10:57:36 PM
July/August would be good for me too. I am too busy until then.

Manchester, eh? Is that anywhere near Hull? A friend of mine used to work at the Uni in Hull.
Bet you could send lots of Manchester United stuff!  :D  I am a complete Anglophile. I even buy the British edition of Country Living magazine every month... I have a problem, don't I?  ;D

Well they're both up North. Manchester is somewhere in the middle, and Hull is about a 100 miles away on the coast. According to theaa.com it would take me about 1 3/4 hours to get there. So in US terms they're quite close. In UK terms Hull is miiiiiles away.
Hull has quite a bad reputation in the UK. Partly to do with the fact there's nothing there except for a big bridge, the accent is very very monotone and slow, and Hull rhymes with Dull.
Manchester however is supposed to be the capital of the north, has a thriving music scene and is quite cosmopolitan. I live right on the very outskirts of it in a little market town with a view of the moors.
As for Man U.... hate them hate them hate them. Wouldn't buy any of their stuff for you cos they've got enough money already. Manchester does have another football team... they're called Manchester City.

I think everyone should be an Anglophile, it's a great country.
But I'm biased ;)

Subtle bonbonz101. Real subtle! :D I don't know about it being cool here, but it's pretty laid back and irreverant. A sense of humour is compulsory. Unless you're a politician.

Manchester is somewhere in the middle, and Hull is about a 100 miles away on the coast. According to theaa.com it would take me about 1 3/4 hours to get there.

My parents live 3 hours away and they're still in the same state. Hmm. See how different countries can be? :)

As for Man U.... hate them hate them hate them.

okay then... :D Just as I hate, hate, hate Aussie Rules football!

We-ell, most of my craft supplies are from Xiamen, Hong Kong, and Singapore! Maybe I'll craft lots of beanies when I go to Scotland because it's soo bleeding cold. You've given me some great ideas!! I will sign up for a round 2 if the timing is right.

Title: Re: Foreign Exchange Swap?
Post by: Banga on June 20, 2006 06:43:29 PM
Exactly tinkerb! It could be anything like cards, journals, tee shirts, keychains, magnets (certainly the type of thing ppl typically pick up as souveniers) but also anything that would help a partner learn about your state/country's culture and "Specialness"! I'm thinking like a homemade guidebook with lots of photos maybe? It could include bought items as well, but most should be crafted-specifics will be in the signups post.

i also was thinking: LATEST IN-TOWN TRENDS. Like stuff people in your town wear that you know they don't do in other countries. Like girls in PR always wear ribbons in their hair and we wear these sort if pins that are very hard to describe but have loads of ribbons in them (they are handmade). And try to fusion culture and craftiness , like traditional stuff made more wearable.I would love to get some one from Asia or Europe (sorry but Ive lived in US a lot!)

Absolutely. That is more along the lines of the original idea. It was purely selfish of me since I'm moving to Germany; what I'd love is an updated trend/slang/fashion/music swap from a German crafter! Then I won't look, act, and sound like a freakish American over there!

I REALLY wanna do this swap!

I have one month on the 15th, can sign up go through then???

I really wanna pair up with a Spaniard. I was born in raised in Baltimore, Maryland (USA) and then went to NYC for  University. I studied one year in Paris and also was a nanny in Spain. I love Spain so much, but mostly Im in love with "El Nino Torres" the footballer...and as its world cup season Ive been watching him alot...Maybe a Manchesterian (or whatever you people in Manchester UK call yourselves) could make me something as I think he normally plays for Man. United, non? But thats kinda dumb cause my best-friend lives in Manchester already...though Ive never been there...

Anyways...SIGN ME UP!

Mancunian, or Manc.

I have to stress due to home town loyalty though that I'm neither. :) Sheffielder, Tyke, Ormskirker, even Stalyvegas or Tamesider... but I'm definitely not a Manc.

This would be AWESOME.  does it have to be me that is going on the foreign exchange?  my boyfriend is going to india for quite a while, and something like this would be fantastic.  i'm in california - not too exotic, but hey...if someone would take me from india or japan (i will be going to japan next year foreign exchange) that'd be incredible.  anywhere else too actually...i'm basically interested in everywhere.

I would absolutely love to participate in this swap!  I'm in Austin, TX, and although it seems like there are so many Texans participating, or planning to already, Texas totally varies from city to city, so that would be cool, right?  Austin is so totally different from San Antonio (despite only being 70 miles apart), which is so totally different from Houston, which is so totally different from Lubbock, and so on.  Different vegetation, food, pastimes, flora and fauna - everything! There's so much local flavor goin' on in Austin, so I figure it would be pretty easy to think of a ton of different Austin things to send.

I wish I had something like this going on when I was studying in Italy.  It would've been so handy.  Alas, I don't even know if craftster existed in 2001. Wow, that was quite a while back.  I feel kinda old now.  :P Do you have to being going on an exchange, or does having been in one before count too?  Or, is it open to anyone willing to participate with the particular theme adjustments making it not your average over seas swap?

Anyway, I'd be game for a swap with any country, but does it matter that I've got a possibly overlapping swap (the newbies swap) or is that cool? I'm ready and willing, if that counts for anything.  ;)

You don't have to be going on an exchange. Its a foreign exchange as in foreigners exchange things with you! ;)

Now I have a question. Will we be crafting things or will we be swapping purchased items?

I personally would rather do a bit of both - some sort of crafted item(s) with a few purchased or free bits included.  I mention free because, for example, in Austin the free paper is the Chronicle, which is a must have for checking out bands, movies, and events, and I think it would be interesting to see what happens and goes on, or even what is advertised in another city. Or maybe some freebie things like the menu to your favorite local restaurant, especially since you probably won't be able to send food from there (although some places sell their sauces or pancake mixes, or whatever...).  Just a few thoughts.

Anyway, I'm up for a bit of crafting mixed with a bit of purchasing, and creative finds. :D

I agree.. sending crafted and purchased AND free items would be great! In New Haven, there's a bunch of free Yale newspapers and such. I'm sure I'd be able to scrounge up some other free things too!  ;D

crappit!  I just realized that I might have to sit out this swap. . :'(

I don't know if there's enough time between my first swap and this one's sign up time for me to get my first positive feedback.  Gah!  I so wanna do this, too!  The original post mentions an early July sign up and an August delivery, but has that changed? I didn't know if we were waiting on more non-USAers to join in, because that's kind of a requisite, isn't it?

Ok, let me clear up a few things for everyone!
1. You don't have to actually be going anywhere to participate! Geek pride hit that one right on the head!
2. We will be sending BOTH crafted and purchased items. One large crafted item, one or two small crafted items, and two small purchased items. Free stuff rocks, so throw in as much free stuff as you find, I guess! If anyone wants to do more than this, you can always communicate with your partner so that no one feels bad about their swapped items.
3. Signups will still be mid July, sendouts mid August.
4. Sorry Miss-a-achoo, but you need feedback from your first swap before joining a second. Just cross your fingers for round 2!

I think I answered everything! And don't worry Texans! I'll match you with ppl from other states if not other countries!

Now I'm trying to think what I could make that represents my country... It's not as easy as I thought...! :-\

Ooh! Ooh!

I just thought of something. Now I just need 2 more ideas... I should go shopping, that always inspires me... (any excuse)  ;D
Free stuff ... free stuff... hunting for free Aussie stuff...

I would love to make this my first swap. It sounds like so much fun.

I'm living in Kentucky but I did study abroad in Japan last summer so I have tons of stuff to send from that. It would be more fun for me than putting together a package from Kentucky. I traveled from Hokkaido to Kyushu and then stayed there with my home-stay family. I am actually planning a trip back next spring!

haha

I'm on it, no worries!

Achtung!

Signups for the Foreign Exchange Swap will be posted on Sunday 7/16. Signups will close on Saturday 7/22.
You all have one week to sign up so make sure you do if you have been posting on this board! :)

I will post partners on 7/23 or 24. Sendouts will be on Monday 8/21, giving you four weeks to craft. This may turn into a big swap and I think everyone posting agreed a longer time was better. If anyone has a special condition or has a suggestion about times, please let me know!

That sounds great! I'm so glad this swap is happening  :) I was wondering if the deadline could be extended a little longer? If not, that's quite okay though.

Thank you so much Banga for organizing!  :D

Well, things may go in your favor tinkerb. Unfortunately due to new swap rules, this swap may need to be postponed a short while. I need feedback from my second swap before organizing this one. I've PM'd the organizer and a mod, so hopefully that feedback will be posted soon and this swap can begin as planned. If not, I will certainly let you all know as soon as I do! I will still be organizing, but it may need to wait! Sorry for all of you who are anxious, and keep checking back for new info!
Thanks! :D
Update! I have been ok'd to organize this swap (thanks Stifflersmom!) so this swap will go on as planned unless I receive a ton of requests otherwise. Oh, and by a ton, I guess that means more than ten since so many ppl have posted interest on this thread! Hope everyone is ready to get swapping!

Banga- would you consider having a second organizer, so that more people could participate? That way, everyone who has posted in interest can join in on the fun!

Haha I wish I could! Right now I am so swamped with everything though ... if you are in desperate need and no one else can, and there ends up being a 25+ turnout, I'm sure I can try and find time though  :)
