Title: Removing Color from Wool Yarn
Post by: WendyZ on May 01, 2006 09:44:22 AM
Has anyone removed color from wool yarn?  I've read that Hydrogen Peroxide is the way to do it, but I don't want to completely screw up this ugly yarn that I have...I'd just like to make it a different color!  It's currently variegated black, dk. grey and red.

Rit makes a color remover...

I've never tried it. I know Wal-Mart has it & it wouldn't cost much to try it.

Why don't you snip a 5" piece of the yarn and put it in peroxide and see what happens?  I know that regular chlorine bleach will dissolve wool in a matter of seconds (I tried it once because I didn't believe it, and it's true!), but haven't heard anything about using peroxide or a non-chloride bleach.  So the only way to know is to try it, I guess.

Oh, and I have a box of Rit Color Remover on hand.  It says:

" Removes or reduces color prior to dyeing with Rit Dye
     * Removes dye stains from whites washed by mistake with colored items.  (I have used it for this and it works.)
     * Use on whites to remove stains such as fruit juice, ketchup, tea and rust.
     * Safe for all fabrics that can be washed in hot water.
     * Color Remover will remove or reduce color from most fabrics. "

So if you're comfortable with putting your wool in hot water, you could try it.  Again, I would use a small piece of yarn and see what results you get before putting an entire skein (or more) in.  The Rit stuff sells for about $1.50 a box.  I got mine at Target.

Try thiox -- www.dharmatrading.com (http://www.dharmatrading.com) carries it or you can read instructions at www.prochemical.com/directions/Thiox.htm (http://www.prochemical.com/directions/Thiox.htm)

Whatever you do DON'T BLEACH YOUR WOOL.

It will RUIN your wool!!!

Trust me, I learned this through bitter, bitter experience.
