Title: Pictures sticking together!
Post by: VoodooToaster on July 08, 2004 09:08:52 AM
Oh crafty wizards, I need help...

Last night I went through my photo scrapbooks from college.  I found to my dismay that a lot of the pictures are stuck together - now I didn't use tape or anything, so why is this happening?  What can I do to get them unstuck the best way without ripping the paper?  And how to prevent this from happening?

Please help me, I'm so sad that my memories from only a few years ago are being destroyed....

The photo emulsion itself will stick to itself - especially if it has gotten wet (or even just been someplace humid).  Matte finish photos are less likely to do this (because they don't have such a  smooth surface, I suspect), and some photo albums (even the kind with plain paper that you stick stuff to) have like parchment-y stuff between the pages to keep pictures from sticking to each other.
I don't know of a good way to fix it, unfortunately.  One thing you might try (although it could be dangerous to the pictures) would be to steam and very slowly and carefully try to peel them apart.
good luck.

as long as you treat the surface image very carefully, most pictures can be wetted, separated and then dried flat...after all, almost all pictures are water processed at some point and the paper can take it.  the danger is that the emulsion is very easy to damage when photos are wet, particularly if they are already stuck to something else--which probably happened from dampness or humidity, as melidomi suggested.    soak the pictures in a little tepid water, carefully separate them and then dry in a blotter book or another smooth, lint-free surface and hopefully all will be well.
good luck!

You may also try a product called undo.  I'm not sure how well it will work on photographs but it is great for unsticking stickers and such from paper.  They also make a photo care solution which is similar.

One thing to note to keep this from happening again... use page protectors.  If you don't like the look of covering your entire page in a protector you can also get something called photo sleeves which are protective sleeves sized just for photographs.  This way if you have photos on opposing pages they won't stick together anymore.

The same happened in my final art essay - try sprinkling baby powder between the (dry!!!) sheets.
