Title: Harry Potter - Ginny Weasley Hat (GoF Style) Now with Pattern on Page 2!
Post by: GoldfishGirl on January 29, 2006 05:36:55 PM
So, basically, I'm a Weasley at heart. I've got the hair, the complexion, and the tolerance for flurries of adolescent children. That's why when I saw this little number:

I had to have it. My version is far less wooly and far yellower than the original though.

I used Red Heart Super Saver in the only orangey color I had (more like a warm yellow, but I'm cheap and didn't want to buy anything), the rainbow bow thing is Lion Brand Landscapes (so soft and fun to knit with, just sort of expensive for the yardage/fiber content), and the burgundy is probably Red Heart as well.

That's darling!  My 6-year-old daughter is a HUGE Harry Potter fan.  (as are my husband and I) She actually pretends to be Ginny (small but powerful) when her and her friends play Harry Potter.  I should show her your hat, it's absolutely perfect!

Have you tried to make Ginny's sage and rainbow hoodie (http://us.movies1.yimg.com/movies.yahoo.com/images/hv/photo/movie_pix/warner_brothers/harry_potter_and_the_goblet_of_fire/bonnie_wright/goblet1.jpg)?  It's darling.  I think I might try that one for next Christmas!  :)

Also, if you do have a pattern that you are willing to share for this cap, I would love to attempt it.

Thanks everybody. It's a pretty easy knit.
My pattern is based off of ea000blaze from the Weasleysweaters livejournal community. Here is her original post : http://community.livejournal.com/weasleysweaters/70037.html

Any who, onto the pattern. It's pretty rough, I've never written a pattern before. If you see any obvious errors, tell me and I'll fix em:

Cast on 90 st on a sz 7 circular needle (16" if that helps_
Knit 3 rounds garter stitch (k 1 row, p 1 row, k 1 row)
Knit 4 rounds
Eyelet round  >>Modified on Jan 31st to add this:
*k3 k2tog, k2 k2tog* repeat to end of round
Knit 4 rounds
Garter stitch for 3 rounds
Knit 4 round
Eyelet Round
Knit 4 rounds
Garter stitch for 3 rounds
*k7 k2tog* repeat to the end of the round
*k6 k2tog* repeat to the end of the round
*k5 k2tog* repeat to the end of the round
Knit one round
Eyelet round
Knit 1 Round
*k4 k2tog* repeat to the end of the round
*k3 k2tog* repeat to the end of the round
*k2 k2tog* repeat to the end of the round
Garter Stitch for 3 rounds
*k1 k2tog* repeat to the end of the round
*k2tog* for two rounds

Finishing:
Keep remaining stitches on needle. Break yarn to bout 10 inches long. Thread it through the remaining stitches twice, tie off. Weave in ends.
Thread contrasting yarn through eyelets. Tie a bow on the lowest round, and square knots one wrong side of the hat in the rest.

Thanks for putting together this pattern.  I love the movie and can't wait to make the hat.  Just one question- what do you mean by eyelet round?  Normally I've seen the rounds as yarn over but then the next round either k2tog or something to make up for the made stitch.  But I'm rather new so I could be wrong.  I appreciate any help you can give.  Thanks again.

Isn't the eyelet round supposed to have YO's in it?  When you modified it, you deleted them , I think. Help!! cuz I really want this hat.

Sorry... First time attempting to write a pattern and I totally muck it up.

And I used worsted wieght yarn.

*faint*

I LOVE YOU!!!! Ever since I saw that hat I kept telling everyone I wanna knit that hat! I'm SOOOOOOO glad you made one! It looks so great! This is my next weekend project, screw everything else, just take me to the yarn store!!

(seriously, I'm so excited I'm practically choking!)

Oh, p.s., you should post this on the Knitty Coffee Shop forum!

**update**

I made the hat! I was so excited I knit it up in an evening of desperate housewives and other season finales. The pattern was great, the only thing I changed was the length. I added an extra "row" at the bottom, except without the eyelet row.

The yarn I used was Cascade 220 for the main hat part and Red Heart Whirly for the coloured strands. Bothe yarns are soft and warm, perfect for a hat! I think I am going to block it though because the bottom curls a bit.

So, what you have been waiting for, the hat! (mind you it is not the most flattering hat on me, but I still love it cause it reminds me of Mrs.Weasley and how she knits crazy sweaters that no one likes but they still wear them)

Thanks again for the pattern! Now I have to find other HP things to knit :D

~K~

Hi! This is the same ea000blaze from lj. I'm so happy my first try at a pattern actually worked (with a bit of tweaking!). I've still not finished a hat myself, but I'll get around to it and post the pics here!

Do you perhaps have measurements on the final hat? or it's pretty much a one size fits most for the worsted weight?

Wowza! It really does look much like the original... great work. That's actually a cool idea, and I too have been inspired by certain articles of clothing and accessories from films, tv, mags ect. very good job!

P.S. The Weasley's are frickin' awesome! Can't wait for until July
when the... ::Gulp:: last book comes out!

Itscute- I didn't get final measurements. And, as much as I'd love to, it's in another county across the state right now. I'll call my mom and ask her to, though.
StitchitBlack- The Weaslies are made of win. Also, in July, the movies come out too! More fun sweaters and hats and bags that we'll all try to copy.

Post by: itscute on February 05, 2007 08:39:59 AM
it's okay goldfishgirl about the measurements.  It's just i have a hard time with gauge, somehow my items always end up way way bigger than planned...so i thought i'd ask.  but honestly i don't follow the guage that closely...which is why my items are huge.  Which doesn't matter much in a scarf situation, but maybe will affect the hats.

I had started a moss/seed stitch scarf, maybe i will frog it & make it into a ginny hat instead... the yarn sure would like to be something more exciting than a scarf!

just have to get the right needles now.

Good luck hon. If it comes out too big, you could just turn it over and use it as a fruit basket or something....

Okay, I am going to ask a total newbie, dumb, embarassing question...

Do you switch to DPN at any time while knitting this hat?  ??? I have never knit a hat before, and when I tried to knit your pattern on 16 inch needles I had too few stitches about halfway up and I couldn't knit in the round anymore. Like I said, I am a knitting newbie, so please have patience... ;D

i didn't make a weasley hat... it's more of a decoration for the top of my head...

i sorta misread the directions and thought i could get away with it... ( where it said garter stitch 3 rows, meant 3 rows actual rows, not just the one full row, but 3 times... oh i don't know how to explain it... just know i did one, not 3)  it seemed to be looking good, until i started decreasing.
and when it was finished, i tried it on...and well... oops!  BUT

It was my first hat, first circular needle project... I'm just happy that i conquered my circular obstacle!! this is something i could do in one evening, so i might cast on another one tomorrow!

thanks again for the pattern goldfish girl.

It looks fantastic for a first try. Great job on getting over your fear of circs! Sorry I didn't make the garter stitch thing clear enough. But way to go hon!

Title: Re: Ginny Weasley Hat (GoF Style) Now with Pattern on Page 2!
Post by: itscute on March 08, 2007 06:33:11 PM
ok so after that disasterous first top of head decoration, I casted on another right away, but ran out of the yarn about 55% into the hat... so I just stopped knitting it... then got all into crochet beanies and what not...but have been doing so feverishly that it has taken a toll on my wrist.
so i decided to switch back to knitting last night, and since i signed up for another hogwarts swap... (I just couldn't help myself!!) and i wanted to practice switching yarn with the circs for the scarf i thought, hey i'll just use the left over burgundy and complete the ginny hat.  and i did.  Tada!!

(it looks way better in person.)
(hehe, this is where the picture would go if I had taken it last night.  i'll take it at lunch and then post it.)

It's actually a hat this time that can fit on top of my head.  although mine doesn't really look like goldfishgirl's... the hat sorta has this bucket feel.  When i get to the top of the hat, it just gets really tiny... and forms it's own little hat... is that normal? or i'm just not counting my stitches correctly?

Title: Re: Ginny Weasley Hat (GoF Style) Now with Pattern on Page 2!

So I tried this last week, and it seemed to be going really good, until I finished it and tried it on.. And was like, wtf? I don't know what I did wrong, I think I just k3, yo, k2, yo, instead of k3, k2tog, yo, k2, k2tog, yo...

And I probably stuffed up the garter stitch part as well (I was doing this while on camp with little seventh graders running around and trying to knit on my hat) but it looked alright at first.

Oh well now I know and I'll start another one on the bus on the way to um, performing arts camp. Haha. Great job + thank you for the pattern anyway, GoldfishGirl!!
