Title: Mystery yarn swap.
Post by: SparroWinter on January 12, 2006 06:36:51 AM
I posted the suggestion for this a while ago, but now I actually have the money to participate in it myself if I actually do it. :) The basic idea behind it is that everyone who buys yarn has at some point bought mystery yarn. Unknown fibre content. Some crazy kind of texture that you can't make heads or tails of. But theoretically, it's in your stash somewhere, sitting there, and it's never going to be made into anything.

So I propose a trade. One ball of mystery yarn for another. The fun part of this swap is that you really have no idea if what you're going to get will be useful. But there's always the chance that it'll be just what you're looking for. And even if it isn't, it's always fun to get stuff in the mail.

If I do this swap, I am, however, in need of some advice. Not everyone has multiple balls of yarn in their stash, so it wouldn't be fair to have one person only send one balls, and others to send, for example, 10. Do you propose a limit on the balls? Would anyone be willing to volunteer to send to multiple people, if they have multiple balls of mystery yarn to swap? Who's with me on this one?

(This'll be the first swap I'll have organized, so if I do it, you may have to bear with me a little. :p)

Just bumping this up so that it's still, y'know, visible.

I actually have a bunch of crazy fuzzy stuff that I bought and have no idea what to do with.  I thought about making this blue poncho (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=9791.0 (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=9791.0)), but uhm... I don't wear ponchos. :)  I think I have it in pink, green, and purple...

I guess it depends if you want people to send to multiple people, or just assign partners to swap with each other.  If you did it with partners, you could ask people to tell you how much mystery yarn they want to part with. i.e. <5 balls, 5-10 balls, >10 balls. Then you could match up partners with similar amounts.

So are you thinking of this as a stashbusting swap?  Or just send out one or two skeins of something goofy?

I think I might be into this if it's like a stashbusting type thing...but if it's just weird yarns, I don't think I want to join in (no offense but I am not into noveltyish yarns and that's where I'd envision this going since those are usually made of weird stuff).

I figured this was kind of a novelty yarn thingy, really, since that's what most of the unidentifiable stuff in a stash would tend to be. At least, that's how I envision it.

Though maybe some sort of stashbusting swap may be a better idea, at this point. I had a lot of interested people when I first mentioned this swap idea, a few months ago, but now it seems like there are very few takers . . .

I was going to post a "Trim your Stash" swap idea. But this falls into the same idea I think. So I'm totally down to participate. And I would be more than willing to send to multiple people, mostly because I have two huge tupperware things under my bed full of yarn I'm never going to make into anything. So I'd like to get rid of it and get more yarn I'll never make into anything!

What a fantastic idea. Let me know when this gets off the ground. (I'm still pretty new, so I don't think I'm eligible for swaps until after Feb. 5th so hopefully the signups will be after that.)

p.s. I just noticed your picture is Hugh Lauries eyes. And since I'm totally in love with Dr. House and find it adorable that he affects an American accent when he's in fact British, I just wanted to share this...uh, embarrassing bit of info? Yeah. Good on ya.

I could be into stashbusting.   :)

And did anyone see Hugh Laurie's speech at the Golden Globes last night?  It was hilarious.

I was boycotting the Golden Globes because it bumped my favorite Monday night programming (Medium) and so I was grumpy and watched movies instead. Coincidently I actually watched Rio Girl which is a film that stars Hugh Laurie, with his orginal british accent.
