Title: Cons to mary janes. NOW with pictorial tute.
Post by: object001 on December 30, 2005 08:34:38 PM
Under the heavy influence of inspiration from https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=53838.0

I found a pair of converse-like shoes which didnt fit too well or go with anything in my wardrobe

and turned them into cute little shoes which probably still dont get with anythign in my wardrobe!!!!

TUTORIAL

1. Cut the shoe to the right shape, just above the first set of eyelets. And glue the tounge to the side bits of canvus (you can see a little white dop of glue through the eyelet!!)

2. Cut a strip of stretch fabric (mine was qit a study fabric so t didnt stretch out of shape but still stretched around the curves). Then a feww inches at a time, cover it with clue and stick it over the raw edge and peg it down. Keep going around until youve covered all the edges.

3. Keep all the pegs on as long as possible... SIDE NOTE: the craft glue i used isnt very durable. Im interested to know a better solution.. maybe super glue?!!?

4. Sew a longish piece of stretch lace to one side, slip the shoe on, pull the lace snug over you foot to work out the length and then sew it down on the other side of the shoe.
I put machien arm into the shoe as shown but only sewed an inch or sew as wide as the lace. It would be too hard to sew all the way around the edge I think.

5. Hand stich cute buttons on!

6. Scrub white rubber bits with spray and wipe and a scratchy pad thing.

7. SHOW OFF!!!!!!

NOTE TO SELF: hand sewing through canvas cover heavily in craft glue is very hard going. Ease up on the craft glue in such areas!!!!

I must agree, hand sewing through canvas is hard.  I tried with my machine on my converses and like...Didn't work, so now I have to hand so and I just grasp the shoe tightly and shoveee the needlee haha.  I loooove yours though.  They look so professional.  I love the lace and button

when you have something that does't match, especially when it's this cute, you BUY new clothes to work with it. lol

Wow!  :o These are great. I love Chucks but I hate lacing them, and this makes a great alternative! I give it a This Rocks! Can you do a tutorial on how to sew on the trim and all of that (seems like it would be hard to get them maneuvered around the sewing machine). Please please please??  :'(

in walmart i saw a pair of pink con like shoes for $8 (i wear an 8, these are a 9 and are huge on me) and thought of this project. (my ribbon is black with white polka dots though)= the didn't have any cute plaids or strechy lace) kay back to the point, did you have a hard time putting the plaid part on? mines sliding everywhere and the curves are really annoying )=

Well it taes a little less crazy when they are $10 fakes rather than the real thing.

I was a bit sad to cut them up cause they were actually a present but I was never wearing them anyway so I felt I was doing the presentt more justice by making it wearable!

They're fantastic! Ooooh! The inspiration! I love mary janes, but don't wear leather, so something similar to your fab shoes would be utterly awesome! Time to have a play!

Those are wonderful! I love them.

On the topic of stretchy lace, I always cut off various useable lengths of bra straps and other bits before throwing the bra away. When my bras inevitably go that mucky grey colour from being washed with something else, the lacy straps tend to stay to original colour, as they don't contain any cotton.
So, now I know what I've been saving 7 inch lengths of bra strap for  ::), recon shoes! Thanks!

Thats an awesome idea! I don't have any lacy brastraps (no idea why), but I'll keep that in mind next time I go bra shopping.

Wicked. I have some cheap red knock of cons I'm totally gonna do that to. Red doens't go with anything in my wardrobe. I have pink ones just that colour, but they're pretty worn cause they used to be my work shoes. (Yeah pink shoes with royal blue scrubs!)
