Title: cutie craft shops in rhode island
Post by: boygirlparty on May 18, 2004 06:01:00 AM
hi all!  i was thinking maybe we could make a list of awesome handmade shops in providence and beyond, since there's been a renaissance of sorts going on.. with cloth., okie dokie, and abode opening on westminster street, and HGTV landing in providence to focus on some craftspeople (are any of you going to be on it?)
the other day i discovered frog and toad on hope street, a sort of part-garden charm, part-asian housewares, part-craftycrafts.. run by totally friendly, nice people..you should all check it out. i spent a ton of money there on mothers day.

I love frog and toad. I don't work too far away, so i sometimes go down to hope st. for lunch.

Hmmm, i'm trying to think of other shops....I think there may be a few in Wayland sq. though i'm sure they are on the pricey side. And there's that store on Thayer, right next to Au Bon Pain, I can't think of the name.

Pie in the Sky, that is it's name...

There is always  OOP! on Thayer and in the mall. Studio Hop on Hope Street. Burgandy and Lime on Wickenden.

That's all I can think of in Providence. I am sure there are more in Newport/Middletown too...

This post is WAY old, but I'm going to reply anyway... Theirs also a few in Wickford Village but they are pricey and theirs the Umbrella Factory way way down in South County.  The Umbrella factory also has a Vegetarian restaurant.

there is a new shop where cloth used to be on westminster (next to abode) that is looking amazing!!
but the closing of okie dokie this week is just about the saddest thing in the world.

i can't remember what the store is called that's next to abode, but i'm pretty sure it's directly next to abode, between abode and subway - i went in accidentally thinking it was abode!
mmm..white electric!
i know, okie dokie closed very abruptly! it's too bad, it's such a rad store.

I think you're thinking of Figment, which has the stationery so fabulous it makes me want to cry, run home and try to recreate it.

I'm moving to Providence in the fall and it sounds like there is plenty to do there.  I can't wait to move!

AAACK! As a RI lifer I am shocked that anyone would find this place boring! Especially in Providence, where you can go shopping no matter what your style is, eat out at a new place every day (any kind of food imaginable), take historical walking tours, visit galleries, go to a show, Jeez! Even if you don't have money there are so many things to do! All you need to do is look. Pick up a guide book even!
I'm moving to a very small town in Germany in a few months, and I am scared to death of being bored! One can only travel so much (it's so expensive!) so I think my crafting will be hitting a high point.
Enjoy Providence pfirsch! I'm going to miss it!

Well, I came to Providence from a small town in Germany.  Crafting can keep you from getting bored once you've exhausted your other options, but it's not quite the same as in the US.  People do pretty much the same kinds of crafts in Germany as they do here, just not so much in groups.

Wow. What a strange coincidence! I'm moving to Friedrischafen. Not teeny tiny, but not Munich!

Back to the original topic though! Can't forget the great stores in South County! Purple Cow in Wakefield, Different Drummer in Wickford... always great for fun jewelry, stationary, and housewares!
