Title: Yo!
Post by: actionallison on November 12, 2003 03:56:28 PM
Hey Y'all,

I'm (sort of) new to the area, by way of Atlanta.
Anyone in the Providence area feel free to drop a line!

Hi Allison

I'm Kristin of offbeatliving.com. I've lived in the Providence area for about 2 years now. I'm still settling in. There isn't a whole lot of organized craft activity in the area (at least not that I'm aware of) but there seems to be awide selection of art and craft stores in the area.

Hey Kristin,

I'm glad someone from Rhode Island finally responded! My goal is to find a group of people to get crafty with.

Your site is super-cute. The Chinese Notebook looks awesome. Where did you find the newspaper?

Hello!  I'm in Providence.  I've lived here for about 3 years - unfortunately, I don't know of any organized craft things either...I'm a knitter, mostly, but I do other stuff too, like accidentally glue my fingers together.

Post by: Mojo on January 31, 2004 04:23:04 AM
I'm in Providence too.  I'm a new knitter (currently obsessing over my first sweater project), have dabbled in crochet and cross stitch, and went through a decoupage phase.  I guess I'm crafty by nature!

Allison:
I love the idea of a craft group. Do you think starbucks will let us break out the art supplies on the velvet couches :)

Anyway, from time to time i pick up foreign newspapers in bookstores for use in craft projects. I can't understand a word, but think it looks nice.

sewngoth: it's so cool that you make your own clothes. I have a sewing machine and have tried (in vein) to produce garments--because i really want skirts with pocketsg. I just can't turn corners with the machine. Everything always comes out crooked.

Kristin (and others):

Maybe we could all meet up and figure out the logistics of starting a craft group in Providence. This doesn't have to be a weekly thing, but it would be super to get something off the ground.

What do y'all think of that?

Allison

Post by: sewngoth on February 04, 2004 11:05:18 AM
That would be awesome It's so hard to find people with this hobby I'd be down for starting something
On another note I just picked up an awesome book called stitch n bitch. It's got some pretty cool knitting patterns in it.

Title: Re:Yo!
Post by: kamico on February 04, 2004 11:38:08 AM
yeah, we should meet up and try to figure something out.  I'm not sure where everyone else is located. I'm here in providence.

On another note, i believe the gals from Stitch and Bitch are doing a book signing in Boston very soon. Like maybe this week or next.

Title: Re:Yo!
Post by: actionallison on February 04, 2004 12:32:45 PM
I'm in Edgewood, which isn't too far from Providence.

Where did you hear about the book signing? I'd love to check that out.

hey i think we should start are own stich and bitch group we could go to a star bucks like kamico suggested and we could break out some yarn and just chat drink some coffee and knit. I up for it if everyone else is.  Ithik there's enough of us to start a little circle

The tour info is here.

I've never actually knitted, i just check out some of the knitting blogs from time to time.

There actually is a Providence SnB already...I emailed the woman that runs it and got a really nice reply, but I was too intimidated to go because not only did it seem like I would be the youngest one there,  it was also held at someone's house. I just felt funny going to a stranger's home by myself. Oh, well.

Either way, we should all gather for a group of some sort.

yeah i also emailed her i  felt the same about the whole being young and goin to some one house but hey we could start our own like a once a month thing im only 20 so to get a group together in the same age group would be cool

Title: Re:Yo!
Post by: fuzzybub on February 05, 2004 06:26:31 AM
I feel the same about going to someone's house for a stitch n' bitch and I'm 31 - I'm not quite there yet with my knitting confidence! I think for now I'd rather meet a group in a public space so when I spill my beverage all over everything I don't feel as bad.

I also think it'd be cool to have some kind of general portable craft thing going on instead of just knitting because I'm trying to expand my horizons.

I've signed up for knitting.meetup.com, but they meet the third Wednesday each month (I think?) and I have class on Wednesdays...most of the meetups have been cancelled for lack of interest but some of you might want to check that out.

A girl on the getcrafty boards started something up last fall but there wasn't much interest over there at the time - we met at nick-a-nees once, which was fun! Only two of us though...

is nick-a-nees the bar that looks like a barn? like, it definitely looks like a pig roast could be happening inside? i went there once, but i was scared away when the open mic jam session started.

if it's the same place, anyway... i'd go again.

Post by: Mojo on February 06, 2004 08:56:27 AM
There's a message board here on Craftster regarding the Stitch and Bitch book.  I've completed two projects from it and just love them.  I'm just about finished with my very first sweater!

I'd be interested in getting together too.  Which Starbucks are you all thinking of?

Title: Re:Yo!
Post by: fuzzybub on February 06, 2004 09:35:08 AM
nick-a-nees is actually a tiny dive-ish bar in the jewelry district - it's a bit smokey but everyone's usually really nice and they allow dogs (not that I have one!).

I haven't been in, but the starbucks at the biltmore looks cool - it's got window seats! Parking would be an issue for some people though...

Title: Re:Yo!
Post by: kamico on February 06, 2004 02:28:59 PM
The Biltmore Starbucks is quite roomy. If that's not convenient for everyone maybe the White Electric Coffee shop on westminster. I haven't been in since they moved from Broadway, so i'm not sure how big it is inside.

Title: Re:Yo!
Post by: Mojo on February 07, 2004 08:44:13 AM
The Starbucks in Wayland Square has couches and a small parking lot.  Would that be convenient for folks?  Nick-a-Nees sounds interesting but I'd rather not knit in a smokey place-- makes the yarn stinky!

Title: Re:Yo!
Post by: actionallison on February 07, 2004 10:54:56 AM
Wayland Square sounds good to me. Based on what y'all have written, it seems pretty convenient to where we all live.  Plus, if necessary, it is easy to catch a bus there.

Now on to the next part...when were you guys interested in meeting up?  I'm thinking a Sunday afternoon or early evening during the week?

If you are coming from Tiverton, this Starbucks is easily accessible from rte 195.  You would take the exit for Gano Street, take a right off the ramp, go straight for 3 or 4 blocks, take a right on to Waterman St., a left on to Wayland Ave., a left onto Angell St.  The Starbucks is basically right there on the corner of Angell and Wayland Ave.

Wayland sq. works for me.
As for time, i vote for a Sunday afternoon.
I could make an early evening, but sunday would be my first choice.

Title: crafty things in rhode island
Post by: boygirlparty on February 13, 2004 12:53:37 PM
hi everyone-

did anyone catch the holiday craft sale, craftland?
http://www.craftlandshow.com

also, the first sunday of evey month, the bizarre bazaar (handmade craft fair) happens at as220.

the hive archive (nonprofit providence women run arts org) also has an occasional bring-your-own-craft-project night, i've never been but i'm sure it's exciting and they'd love to have new blood.

Title: Re:Yo!
Post by: fuzzybub on February 14, 2004 09:20:15 AM
I love craftland!  I bought lots of presents there last year and the year before. I've also been to a few of the bizarre bazaars.  I'll have to check out the hive archive and see if there's anything happening there - I know about them and I live on the west side so I hope so!

Sunday afternoon works well for me - I'm a bit reluctant to go to the starbucks in Wayland Square for reasons I won't go into (mystery and drama!) but it is easy to find and has parking so it's a good place for a group to meet.  I could wear a disguise!  I can't really think of any other places - I love white electric but it's kind of small and isn't open on Sundays and I believe they close around 6 on weekdays.  Daily Bread in Wayland Square is ok but they get crowded on Sundays and may not want a bunch of people sitting around with glue.

We totally don't have to meet there if you don't want to. It is more important to have a solid group who all feels comfortable.

Can you think of another option? If y'all are stuck on the Starbucks idea, there is a pretty large one in Warwick.

Any ideas/comments?

Title: Re:Yo!
Post by: fuzzybub on February 24, 2004 02:09:15 PM
we could give the daily bread in wayland square a try - anyone up for this sunday?  Any starbucks other than the wayland square one is fine with me too.

Title: Re:knit together
Post by: osprey on March 02, 2004 09:53:38 PM
Starbucks at wayland is usually crowded, and crafting there would be messy , knitting onthe other hand...   Where is there a larger starbucks? What about Starbucks on Thayer?

Hey everyone,

I think today was supposed to be our tentative meet-up, but I'm pretty sure that isn't happening anymore.

Do you want to try for either sometime this week or next weekend?

It doesn't have to be anything serious...we could just meet each other and call it a night. Or not. Any ideas?

Who's with me? :D

Title: Re:Yo!

I wish I could go and meet you guys! This week is too busy for me. Will you meet again after this week?

Are you going to just meet up, or are you guys going to do knitting? I don't know how to knit, but I want to learn! Maybe someone could teach me...

Title: Re:Yo!
Post by: actionallison on March 09, 2004 01:37:42 PM
Hey Teresa,

I was thinking we could all just meet each other and try to figure out the details of our group.

If anyone is planning on bringing a small project, that is totally fine. I will bring my knitting, but for some reason I don't anticipate doing any tomorrow night. But of course, we'll just see where we go.

I'm hoping to make this a bi-monthly or monthly gathering at least. How do y'all feel about that?

Either way, we will post what we talked about etc. on here and you (or anyone else who can't make it) can respond with any imput you may have.

Sound good?

Title: Re:Yo!

Thursay or Friday is good for me evenings or anytime in the early day,  we have to figure a time.  Ill bring my knitting , my first scarf :o

Title: Re:Yo!
Post by: fuzzybub on March 10, 2004 06:59:57 AM
So for this week whoever can meet up at the Thayer St. Starbucks tonight (Wed.) at 7 just so some of us can get together?  I'll show up a bit early with my bag o' knitting. If for whatever reason no one else can make it that's fine - I need to get some knitting done anyway!

Can everyone list their availability?  I'm currently available Monday and Tuesday evenings, some Wednesdays, and weekends.  If this is to be a regular thing (i hope so!) maybe we can come up with some kind of alternating schedule in which we meet different days of the week - that way more people can make it:)

Panera's address is:

Hey Kamico (and everyone else),

Someone gave me a few old math and science books today. If that is something you can use for pages in Tiny Books, I can bring one next time we meet up.

I have a couple, so if anyone else wants one...you know who to ask.

How late did y'all stay last night?

It was awesome to meet all of you!

See you next week, most likely!

Hey there:

I wish I found this thread months ago! I moved to prov from Cambridge over six months ago, and still don't quite feel like it's home....I'd love to crash your meetings if you'd let me. I'm just a two-bit crochet-er though. I've been really wanting to meet other crafty ladies and have something like a Stitch n Bitch. So do you still meet on Wednesdays? What do you usually do? Share what you're making?

Thanks!

You should totally come!

We are still meeting on Wednesdays at seven, although sometimes we all run a bit late.

Do you know where the Panera Bread in Cranston is?

Everybody makes different things, so bring whatever you're working on!

Yay!

Yes, you should come on Wednesday!  5 NEW LONDON AVENUE CRANSTON,  RI  02920  is the address (Panera Bread) and once you come in the door, turn right and we're against the wall.  They stay till it closes.

And yah, we just talk and work on our own things.  Some knit, some bind books, some make creatures, and I decorate lighters.  I've gone maybe 5? weeks so far?   Its fun and everyone is friendly.

There are also stitch n bitch groups on livejournal.  For example, http://www.livejournal.com/community/snbprov/ who meets on Thursdays in Providence @ Reflections and Fridays at Yarns at Lace Wings.

Hi All,

I'm a Providence girl, and I wish so much I could go to your meetings!  Is that the panera near Garden City?

I'd love to go it I can manage to drag myself away from my guilty pleasure of "america's next top model".  :-[  I hate to say that I love that show!  My girlfriends and I all watch it together.

Yup, it's the panera across from Garden City. We are there on Wed. evenings about 7pm, though sometimes 7:15ish.

There's 2 or three stitch and bitch groups in the RISD area. Check on intranet.risd.edu and risd.dailyjolt.com on the forums they say when they meet and where, students have mentioned ones that are off campus, revolutions cafe or something like that. I don't know. I wish I actually had time to go to one, i don't know how other students have time.

Hi guys! I'm going to be moving to Prov over the summer. I just got a textile design job right outside of the city and it would be nice to meet some crafty people since I'd be new to the area...

Have you found a place to live yet?

Crap! I can't even believe I have been missing out on this! I'm in Apponaug, but will be moving away in Sept! So far my crafty goodness is only shared online, with my mom, and with my boyfriend, who still thinks it's a bit odd that i am stressing over a tshirt design for a swap partner in Italy i have never met.  :P

Craft Night is movin' on up...to Thursdays!

Same bat time, same bat place.

This will only be for the next six weeks...after that we will probably go back to Tuesdays? Mondays? Some time in the beginning of the week.

Great I can come now

Double checking Panera Bread in Warwick whats the address again so I can google it

Title: Re: Yo!
Post by: actionallison on July 07, 2006 05:40:47 AM
It is actually in Cranston:

Panera Bread
(401) 946-4766
5 New London Ave
Cranston, RI 02920

Here are Teresa's directions from 95 South:

take 95 to exit 14B,
take exit 2B (reservoir)
after the second light on the left is a left hand turn lane, turn left into Panera parking lot (there is a Panera, Washington Mutual, & Pier One in the same shopping area)
if you see a gas station, you have gone too far

It is right near Garden City, if that helps. We'll hopefully see you next week!

Hey Liz,

We do still get together, although the night is in the process of changing...I'm thinking Tuesdays, but don't quote me on that just yet. The time will stay the same (7/7:30).

You should bring anything you feel like working on! I'll repost after things settle down. Hope you see you there!

Alright so you guys are meeting on Wednesdays at 7:30 a the Cranston Panera?? Hope so. My friend and I are looking for a stitch and bitch and I think this will be a good stand in until we find one of those. How many ppl attend your meetups? Is this group on meetup.com?

I'm thinking of hosting a stitch an bitch in my home on Friday nights. Or maybe starting the event but have it meet at other places on a rotating basis and/or meeting on various days. I live in Providence. :)

Anyway, I'm Danyel and I'm looking forward to meeting y'all and craftin with yas.

Hello!

Craft Night is about to get complicated (not really). Due to some scheduling conflicts the group is meeting Wednesdays one week and Tuesdays the next. Next week starts a Tuesday week.

I hope you and your friend come!

We have about six girls in the group and it is not on meetup.com.

I live in Portsmouth on Aquidneck Island (with Newport), so it sounds like y'all aren't too near, but I just thought I'd say hi.  I might be moving soon so we'll see if I end up close enough for your craft meet-up.

I loove how RIers think a 30 min. drive is not close  ;D We are so spoiled! It took me over an hour to get to my job in Germany, between a train, a bus, and a twenty minute walk, but once I came home, I drove the 1/4 mile to my local Cumby's for milk.
I wish I wasn't moving again so soon, cause I'd love to meet up with you all!
