Title: Best Yarn Stores in RI??
Post by: AmyKT5 on August 26, 2005 11:15:11 PM
Hey everyone~

I live in MA right now, but I go to school at Salve (in Newport) and I intern in Providence.  Can anyone recommend any good yarn stores around those areas?  I'm thinking Prov, Warwick, Newport, Middletown mostly.  I'm really pretty much willing to go anywhere, though, since the state is so small.

Thanks for any suggestions!!   :D

Yarns at Lace Wings is great...they have a store on the Providence/Pawtucket line and a new on Rt. 2 in Warwick.

I also really like Sakonnet Purls, but that is in Tiverton and far away.

Fabric Place (also on Rt. 2) also has a pretty decent selection of yarn.

Hope that helps!

I loved Lace Wings until I found The Yarn Depot - which is just off Lonsdale in Pawtucket. It's amazing - it's like yarn porn! And completely affordable! They have imported yarns, cotton, mohair, and everything inbetween. Everything!

I also had a conversation with a woman who works at Lorraine's that a place called Patchis Peter has great yarn for a discount price - I haven't been there yet...but it's also close to Mineral Spring/Lonsdale in Pawtucket.

The yarn depot is actually called The Yarn Outlet but it is still a good yarn shop.  The lady behind the counter is not particularly friendly nor are their hours particularly accessible but it is still a fun shop.  Peter Patchis yarns is a very odd place.  They are on the second floor of a warehouse and it is a bit hard to find.  The one time I visited (looking for needles and to browse) they looked shocked to see me like they hadn't had a customer in years (not kidding) I started to browse but I was so uncomfortable since they hadn't even greeted me but kept giving me sly glances like they didn't understand what I was doing in their space (it didn't feel like a shop)  I asked if they had any needles since I needed a size 7 circular.  They didn't seem to know what circulars were and took me to their "needles stand" that literally only held needles from the 70s.  I talked to some other knitters in RI and it turns out that they mostly market to the machine knitter and they have yarn on cones.  I haven't been back.

There's a cute little yarn store in Middletown called "Knitting Corner & Scrapbook Nook".  Although I don't think they do the scrapbooking as much anymore, like 2/3 yarn 1/3 beading.  A bit expensive as LYS tend to be, but nice and helpful and they have a very comfortable leather couch.  It's on East main road in a little horse-shoe shaped plaza up the hill from BJs and the Christmas tree plaza.

This summer I went to my first LYS ever--Fresh Purls in Providence. The prices seemed really expensive (I'm not a very good judge though, since I normally stick to Knitpicks and Michaels for my supplies), but it was cute and had a pretty good selection of sock yarn.

are any of these stores reachable by the ripta buses? i go to school in providence but don't have a car, and the only within-walking-distance LYS (a stitch above) closed, and i'm lost!

There's a yarn store on Hope Street across from Rochambeau Library.  Can't remember the name.  It's similar to Stitch Above, but brighter.

I believe there's one on Rte 2...if you're going South, it's right past the intersection where you'd take a left to CCRI. I've never actually been in it, though.

Fresh Purls is the shop near the Hope/Rochambeau intersection (definately bus accessible).  They are certainly much smaller than A Stitch Above, but they are now my most local LYS.  They are also quite friendly and seem to want to help their customers a lot.  For example, last time I was in, they were plying together 2 skeins of yarn for a women (for free, mind you) just so she wouldnt have to knit off two balls at once.

They may be a bit pricey, but then I think most LYSs are pricey.

Sakkonet Purls hands down.  I love that shop.
