Anyone else obsessed with The Great British Bake Off? I could listen to the soothing tones of Mary Berry praising a bake all day. We'll be making a medium and a small for our partner, and any extras will need to be discussed before sending (these are not required)! Let's share our disgust of soggy bottoms, our delight at who gets named star baker, and have fun crafting for this amazing show.

*PLEASE NOTE: If you choose to send a perishable item for your medium or your small (please check with your partner to make sure they'd appreciate this), your other item MUST be non-perishable; we want a keepsake from this swap that doesn't get eaten!  :D

Some ideas to craft:
- woodburned mixing spoon/cutting board/etc
- decorated apron
- "Star Baker" embroidered patch
- festive British bunting to decorate one's kitchen like the baking tent
- shirt with funny GBBO quotes
- etched cookware
- crocheted hot dish carrier for your amazing bakes!
- edibles that will hold up in transit (no baked alaskas please!)

I really like the idea of this, just need to check my schedule first.....

I checked though and I've only done 56 swaps so I do have some catching up to do...

Love the graphic!!

I stumbled on this one the other day while pinning for this swap:

I feel like I'm doing the equivalent of staring at my oven waiting for partners...

Working from home today and re-watching season 1. I think I've decided my kitchen needs a bunting. I did not put in that in my Q. ;D

Lol.  I'm rewatching too Abbee!  Got through the first two episodes yesterday.  It's raining here, with thunderstorms to start any minute now, so clearly all things must stop in the pup's world.  Oh well.  Good excuse to curl up with some tea and work on the new shawl I'm designing for a friend.

Thoughts while watching GBBO last night: the bakers really do make you feel like you could maybe achieve some of these crazy bakes. Mind you, not all, but some at least. My real limitation is not having a mixing stand - those look mighty powerful and handy.

I wish that Netflix had the earlier seasons of GBBO. I liked when Mel and Sue would go on field trips and talk to experts bakers who make delicacies that are only found in certain cities, or when they would talk to food historians about the history of meat pies and other baked goods.

Oh I'm horrible. I fast forward through those parts after I've seen them once haha.

Also I wonder why netflix doesn't have all of the old seasons available. It's probably a licensing thing, but it's annoying.

I'm rewatching season 2 (Netflix's version of season 2 anyways).  Anyone else think Paul & Mary seem extra critical of Francis, for creating beautiful things?  Which just seems like a weird thing for them to be annoyed about.  Everything she makes looks like it belongs in a shop window.  They are so beautiful and professional looking, and it really seems like Paul & Mary dislike her for that trait.

She had style to spare, but I definitely remember her not really honing in on flavors equally which is why they criticized her overly elaborate bakes I thought. To be fair, I thought her stuff was great, but gotta taste good too.

I ran out of GBBO to binge  :'( It's only a matter of time before I just start at season 1 again lol. Also made a small thing for my package, and pulled out the supplies for my medium. I need to decide on a plan of attack but hopefully it'll come together quickly once I sketch out a pattern.

Also I found this article on Mental Floss about GBBO intriguing (http://mentalfloss.com/article/90944/facts-about-the-great-british-baking-show-bake-off-gbbo). Some things I already knew, but some things were a revelation! They have to grab a cameraperson every time they plan to open their oven?! Must put a cramp in their flow of baking.

SWAP CHECK IN!

If you had to do a Signature Bake, what genre of bake would you hope for?

I'd say probably cakes or something of that nature. I'm rubbish with pastries (the few times I've tried), and biscuits seem a bit risky with how picky Paul and Mary could be.

Title: Re: CLOSED - Great British Bake Off Swap (SO 6/17)
Post by: Abbeeroad on May 23, 2019 01:20:17 PM
Hmm....probably a tray bake. I'm more of a "throw it all in a pan and see what happens" kind of baker. ;D

I would hope to bake... anything! but cupcakes are my forté. That said, I had an audition for the Great Canadian Baking Show in its first season, and we had to bring something we considered a signature bake. It took me SO long to decide on one thing! In the end I brought a chocolate peanut butter cake.

Ooh, I forgot you did that fluffypants! What was the whole process like (if you have time and want to share  ;))? I tried to look up the application form for GBBO to share it here for amusement but I guess they have it on lock-down when they're not accepting new apps.

My signature bake would have to be yeast breads or cookies. Won the Okmulgee Pecan Festival baking contest grand prize several years ago with a cheddar-pecan bread I created. I've also taken several first place finishes at our county fair with various cookies.

I love to share! ;D It was such a neat experience. And I have trouble ever telling a "short version", haha.

First up was the online application. Lots of questions about what you like to bake, why you like to bake, who you bake for, why you need to be on the show, and a bunch of legalese. There was a spot to upload a video if you so desired, and I figured – what better way to introduce myself? I assumed my odds were better if I went to the effort. I spent days trying to shoot the perfect video, and an evening editing it together. I was really happy with it when it was done, so I got it all uploaded and sent 'er in.

A couple of days later, I got a call for a phone interview. They asked me a lot of questions about specific things and whether I'd done them – lots of more "complex" things, but the only ones I remember specifically were tempering chocolate and making Swiss meringue buttercream. It lasted maybe 20 minutes and I'm sure my heart was pounding the entire time as I racked my brain to remember everything I'd baked in the past year.

Well, a few days after that, I got an invitation to audition in Toronto! I live in a small town about a 2 hour flight from Toronto, so I quickly booked a ticket and went down for – get this – April Fool's Day weekend. I began to wonder whether the whole thing may be an elaborate joke. :D I stayed with my cousin and his partner and their apartment was BOILING HOT. I assembled a sloppier-than-I-would-have-liked cake the evening before the auditions (melting ganache, last minute late night trips to the store, oh my!) and slept on the floor.

The auditions took place at a cooking school, where we brought our bakes, had headshots taken, and baked for the audition judges while they walked around doing interviews. Before beginning, they had a pep talk and then told us to grab the supplies we needed. All of the baking utensils, bowls, etc. were spread out on a table. I recall grabbing what I thought was a set of measuring spoons, only to find out when I got back to my station that they were set out in piles by size, not in sets, and I had grabbed ALL of the tablespoons, hahaha. Oops. (Sabotage!)

We all received a basic scone recipe and had access to a table full of different mix-ins to make our own flavours. When I had been deciding what to bring for my "signature" bake, I was down to either my peanut butter chocolate cake (which won out) or a Finnish coffee bread I learned from my Mummo. So, I decided to take the flavours of the coffee bread and put them into a scone – I used cardamom and raisins, and mashed up some blueberries in the glaze, as blueberries always remind me of Finland. They turned out delicious! I have been hooked on scones ever since.

I made friends with a few people at the audition and we made a point to keep in touch on Facebook. One of them even made it on the first season of the show! It was very cool to live vicariously through him. I've applied both years since then, but have yet to make it back to an audition. Hopefully one of these years will be my lucky year. :) Even just the audition experience was so fun! I'd love to do it again.

Wow, that looks like fun! I could only have a signature bake by flavor, I'm not much of one to have patience for decorating. Unless I can cover everything in modelling chocolate animals and flowers, that is. And also edible wildflowers.

That's so cool, fluffy!! I can't even imagine going through all that, but I'm sure it was an amazing experience :D

If I had a signature bake, it would either involve scones or cupcakes. I used to bake both a lot for get together or just to bring to work every couple weeks. :) I even once made scones for someone's wedding reception. She married an Englishman and all the British family was quite concerned that an American girl was making the scones. Instead of having a meal after the wedding, they just had a standing tea party. Turns out, the English guests all LOVED my scones and there were no leftovers even though I made three flavors and had about 50 of each prepared. :) It was a small wedding. They really liked my scones. ;D One of my best friends is also British and always used to ask me to make scones when he visited (but now he lives in the same town as me so I don't make him special batches :P )

Oh man! I forgot you guys are there! My brother is stationed at Fort Bragg, so I was visiting him in Fayetteville. I'm not sure how close/far that is from you.

I will have to remember to reach out to the NC folks next time I visit. It's always hard to see everyone and do everything!

Irony: when your 'small' is physically much larger than your 'medium'. Yup! That's what I've got going on here. Finished with the small and about half done with the medium. That's good progress for me. I'm usually rushing to finish everything in the last two days.  :D

So close!! Though I will say, it's a very different experience meeting up with me with three kiddos in tow! ;)

OK, I have a solid crafting plan. My "small" has three parts. My medium is an experiment, lol. This should be fun.

Spent several hours on my main project yesterday, first while watching Bake Off, then watching the first few episodes of Good Omens.  Discovered that while I need my glasses to watch tv, they are a big hinderance to doing _______.  I kept slipping them off to see my work clearly, then looking up at the tv and being completely confused as to why I couldn't see very well.  They don't seem to hinder me when crocheting or making jewelry, so I didn't even think about the possible effect when I chose this craft.  I guess we really do learn something new every day!

I found the pictures I took of some bakes a friend and I did after she bought one of the official GBBO cook books!

Our first adventure was a lemon swiss roll - rolling that baby was scary!! But we didn't get as much cracking as feared...also the layered slices of lemon on top were my attempt at a fancy garnish. Needs some work haha.

And then later we did two loaves, a plaited saffron and a cheesy something something (insert I can't remember exactly what it was) loaf. The proving time was serious - I see why they have cups of tea at the ready for all the slow bits in between.

Anyone else have a fancy (or not fancy) bake they want to share?  :D

sheep, those are beautiful!!

I can't pick a spirit baker... I love too many of them. Generally I like rooting for the really young people that are also balancing school exams and self taught in a much shorter period than the older bakers though. Martha and Ruby are a couple of my favorites :) When Ruby broke her glass Kitchenaid bowl - I laughed so much that they replaced it with a metal bowl for the rest of the episode :P I don't even understand how she broke it, but I'm a klutz and always breaking things too :)

Jennie, I am intrigued... I've been making several practice "bakes" before starting my Showstopper! :) I still need to finish up my signature "bake", but only have a few details left to pipe. The technical challenge... I haven't gotten there yet. :| I actually don't know how it's going to go since I'm playing with things I don't usually play with.

Ok, one last group question:

What was your favorite challenge?

I love any of the structural ones, so typically the "build a non-house" biscuit or bread sculpture challenge. That or the historical recreation ones (Victorian marzipane "marchpane" challenge). Ooh, or petit fours (so fancy!)......clearly I'm having trouble picking just one.

Can I chime in with my LEAST favorite challenge?  Making a biscuit chandelier.  I just kept talking out loud in my living room, telling Paul what a stupid challenge that was.  Seriously?  Dumb.

I suppose I should clarify.  I liked that it was a unique challenge, that the bakers couldn't just google image search for 'biscuit chandeliers' and had to come up with something truly one-of-a-kind on their own.  But I also thought it was pretty obvious WHY no one has done one before.  They are dumb, and they will just fall apart.
