Hi all!

I know that our next Craftster Meetup in Asheville, NC hasn't happened yet, but kbrison suggested that I get this out there so that people can start making plans.  It happened and it was epic!  Time to start planning for the next meetup!

I would like to propose holding our 2020 meetup in Oahu, Hawaii sometime in late June/early July.  We have a date: July 10-12!
Craftster Clouds and Mountains lives there and I grew up there and go back every 3-5 years so I know the place well.  We will be flying into Honolulu International Airport.  We also can take a day trip or longer to the Big Island (Hawai'i) too.

There seemed to be some interest before so I thought I'd get it out there.

So why Hawaii?  Well, it's my home so I know my way around the place and I have a couple of friends from high school that still live there.  Also the locals are amazing and I think we'd have a blast there because there is so much to do: hiking, surfing, shopping at the Aloha Flea Market, snorkeling, interesting Asian and local art museums, lei making, luaus, etc.

Here are some snaps that I took a couple of years ago.

Anyhow let's chat about it!

Mahalo! Rox

I'd be up for Hawaii!  I've always wanted to go, but never had a chance or a reason before.  sheepBlue, you up for an island adventure?

Yay!  I'm so happy that there is still interest.  Joyful, so glad you like the pics.  I just grabbed the first couple of pics.  You'll see that it is even more lovely in person.  I have so many photos and I still need to make our little vacation book.  LOL.

Don't worry L&B.  Even if you can't come in person we will take you with us as we eat, shop, and craft our way in Oahu.  I'm just glad to be able to meet you finally...it really doesn't matter where.  I could meet all of you in a greasy diner and be happy.  :)

I hope the dates will work for us. June is the last month of school before summer holidays, exams & all that. Plus it's so nice here in summer, we usually go to our cottage then. Right about Feb is when we'd most like to go some place sunny but we'll try to make it work whenever it happens. Because HAWAII!

Figure on DH and I attending. Zalphinian visited Hawaii when she was 12 (Girl Scout trip) and has always wanted to return. Not sure that she would be able to finance the trip but I'll run this past her.

This sounds like such fun -- I'm another one who has never been there!
Interestingly, my daughters each got to make a trip there last year (one in June, one in Nov.)
So maybe it's time for my hubby & me to plan a trip  :)

OMG, Hawaii is a bucket list place for me :) I may need to keep close tabs on this and start saving, as I too would want to stay on for longer than a weekend. Being in the midwest now (IN) instead of FL, the flight would be reduced a bit from the middle of the US over there. Life-wise, there's a LOT in the works for me and DH...so it may not end up working out as the time for this gets closer...but I'll keep fingers crossed I'll still make it! Bookmarking!!

YAY!  I hope you can make it Sapphire!  Hawaii has so much to offer!  I wish I had the means to go travelling all over the place.  Fingers crossed that it will work out for you and everyone else!!!  :)

I wish I could go, but there is absolutely NO way I would be able to go to Hawaii again without my family. We went on a large extended family trip(dh's side) to Maui several years ago, and we all want to go back. But...we need to start saving so we can go and visit my home (Alaska) again. It's already been 6 years since my mom saw my kids.  It's a busy time in my life right now age-wise with my kids, so if the next-next meetup is more in the IN/OH/PA/MI area I would hopefully be more able to go.  I hope this pans out...it'd be amazing!

A meetup in the IN/OH/PA/MI area would be great too! (I'm in MI)

Our cottage is south of Windsor, we've spent much time in the Detroit area & I know lots of Craftsterers are in MI. We'd try to make a meet-up there :). Summer would be best for us, our kids could stay with the grandparents.

Title: Re: Craftster Meetup 2020 - Aloha Hawaii!
Post by: underthemountain on April 14, 2019 01:47:26 PM
Would the IN/OH/PA/MI meetup be at the same time as the Hawaii trip?  I wanna go to both!  :)

Title: Re: Craftster Meetup 2020 - Aloha Hawaii!
Post by: BigBangMomma on April 14, 2019 02:06:23 PM
Oh gosh, I was not trying to take over the HI meetup thread...just suggesting IN/OH/PA/MI for another future location (since I can't go to HI)..like, if these meetups become annual or bi-annual, then maybe after HI. I don't want to over-take the HI thread because I want that to happen for those who can go!

Title: Re: Craftster Meetup 2020 - Aloha Hawaii!
Post by: craftylittlemonkey on April 14, 2019 04:53:59 PM
HI works for us if it's around this time next year, April-ish or over the summer when we can send kids to the grandparents.
MI we could prolly swing any time but winter driving isn't awesome so maybe any non-snowy time would be more realistic.

BBM, I agree with not being able to go to Hawaii, as sad as it makes me.  Maybe you'd want to start a thread at some point for the meetup places you mentioned?  As long as life wasn't hitting me hard at that point, I would love to go!

Title: Re: Craftster Meetup 2020 - Aloha Hawaii!
Post by: underthemountain on April 15, 2019 08:48:03 AM
Hi BBM!  I didn't think you were trying to take over the thread.  I think starting another thread would be good so that we can keep the 2 meetups separate.  :)

I'm happy that there are some that can make the HI meetup.  It will rock!  :)

Oh we're going to a hukilau
A huki huki huki huki hukilau
Everybody loves the hukilau
Where the laulau is the kaukau at the luau

We throw our nets out into the sea
And all the amaama come a swimming to me
Oh, we're going to a hukilau
A huki huki huki hukilau

What a beautiful day for fishing
That old Hawaiian way
Where the hukilau nets are swishing
Down in old Laie bay

Hi Eri!  That would be awesome!  I'm hoping our kumu can hook us up with a halau to visit while we're there.  Lana hulas and hubby John is a musician and it would be so great if you could join us!!!

An actual halau visit would be AMAZING! The closest I've managed was "The International Waikiki Hula Conference" a few years ago. It was fantastic, but not quite the same as going to a kumu's actual learning space.

I'll try my best to set up a halau visit.  :)  Our kumu is friends with Kimo Kahoano so maybe we could meet him too.  I think he still does a show down in Waikiki.  :)  There are some nice bars down there that have live hula too.

Oh I want to go so badly. I've never been to Hawaii.

But we've a big Disney trip planned for August of next year so cash might be tight. But if I can score a reasonably priced flight........

Ouch! just did a quick and dirty flight search for June of this year, to give me a ball park figure. It's about 1300$ for the cheapest (many stops and about 50+ hours travel time) flight. So I think that will count me out-unless I win the lottery, then I'm totally there!!

I'm planning on holding it on O'ahu (that's the one with Honolulu and Waikiki).  I'm originally from there and Mountain and Clouds lives there. You should plan on flying into the Honolulu International Airport.  :)

Funny you asked about this because John was asking today if we should plan a trip out to the Big Island/Hawaii as well.  We could do that too if people want to see some lava at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park.  My best friend has a place off the grid that we could also visit.  :)

Wow Jennie, that's an insane price for you!!

CLM yes, Florida. Next August from about the end of the first week ish. We've to be back in Ireland by 24 August. Depending on the date of the Minnesota state fair, moll wants to try and get that in too. Only because there are no other state fairs that are easy (ish) to get to, at the start of August.

Lol!  Well don't forget I'm currently sitting in a spot that if I drove two hours either east or west I'd fall into the Atlantic ocean or the Irish sea, and about 4 hours north or south-more seas.

Easy in this context means regular flights from Ireland. We could fly into Florida, fly to Minnesota and home from there. Probably mad, but moll is planning this one!

Of course my geography of the US was never great :D

Hawai'i in June or July? Count me in! No really, you can imagine how much it's been hurting to have missed this year's meet-up, and June/July is pretty much the only time of the year that I can be sure of getting away. I went to visit my sister in  Honolulu when I was fourteen, and have been dying to get back ever since.

I would be excited even if I wasn't going to get to hang out with Rox and Lana and so many other Craftster pals. BUT I AM! And that makes it even better!

Is the Aloha Flea Market really still going? My sister took me there in 1977, and it's still the best I've ever been to. As a kid it seemed enormous - like it covered half the city!

Woohoo!!!  Wulf!!!!  OMG!  So, so happy you can make it!!!  We missed you guys soo much!

Yes, the Aloha Flea Market is still going, but it has changed alot.  There are still lots of local crafts, but there are also alot more commercialized things there.  It is still great...shave ice, fresh fruit, including pineapples, papayas, and coconuts, and out of this world malasadas!  It is enormous.  Everyone needs to get a good hat, good walking shoes, and tons of sunscreen.  :)

I feel like I’ve heard talk about the Aloha Swap Meet *possibly* being shut down at some point. But I’m really hoping it won’t happen, as they closed the Kam swap meet a few years ago. :( (I think there is always talk about re-doing the stadium or building something else there. *sigh*)

Today on the drive in Lana was busy thinking of all the Hawaiian crafts that we should see/teach.  It made me happy.

Today on the drive in Lana was busy thinking of all the Hawaiian crafts that we should see/teach.  It made me happy.

That would be so wonderful!  I love the idea of learning crafts specific to the location and culture.  Especially of Hawaii!  :)

When I was a baby-crafter, (probably 9 years old?) I was in the school library, looking for a biography for a book report I had to write.  I wanted to find one on a woman, and preferably not one of the 2 or 3 women every other girl was writing about (Amelia Earhart or Eleanore Roosevelt).  I bumped into a copy of a biography titled Lili'oukalani; The Last Queen of Hawaii.  It was one of those moments that as a child, your brain breaks.  'Hawaii had a queen?!  But Hawaii is part of the United States!  The US doesn't have kings or queens!  Was the entire world a lie?!?!  What else are adults keeping from me??'  (Suffice to say taking American History later in junior high and high school continued to break my brain.  'Wait, am I solely responsible for all of Colonialism?')

Part of our assignment was to dress up in honor of our historical figure.  I couldn't pull together a Victorian gown, gold crown, or sash, and so went with a cheerful sun dress that 9 year old me thought reminiscent of Hawaiian prints, and decided to make my own lei.  My mother had some silk flowers she offered to let me use, but I was very clear that I wanted to use fresh flowers.  Mom looked the other way as an hour before school, I plucked blossoms off our neighbor's rhododendron, and carefully strung them all.  One poor side of that shrub was probably naked for the rest of the summer.   :P

Post by: underthemountain on May 02, 2019 07:15:51 AM
Aw, what an awesome story Jennie!  Queen Lili'oukalani was a talented woman.  In addition to being a queen she was an accomplished songwriter.  She wrote Aloha ʻOe among many others.

Lei making is definitely on our list of things that we will be crafting.  We can string simple leis and if we can gather the materials (i.e. find places to pick flowers) I can teach everyone how to make a haku ("head") lei.

Title: Re: Craftster Meetup 2020 - Aloha Hawaii!
Post by: Mistress Jennie on May 02, 2019 07:52:52 AM
Heck yeah haku!

Post by: LadybugsAndBumblebees on May 02, 2019 08:42:52 AM
There is a book in my library titled:  'The Aloha Quilt'.  Even though it is fiction, it gives a wonderful description of Hawaii and an extensive background about the queen.  In case anyone would like to read it.  :D

Post by: Mountains and Clouds on May 02, 2019 10:45:51 AM
We have a purple crown flower (giant milkweed), which was Lili’uokalani’s (supposedly) favorite flower for making lei. We recently cut it WAAAAY back, but if it recovers enough, I am happy to donate those flowers to lei-making efforts. :) I only have a few white orchids, and they never flower. I can probably donate a variety of plumeria too, but those die so fast!

Post by: underthemountain on May 02, 2019 01:59:45 PM
That’s awesome Mountains and Clouds! Do you have access to ti and bougainvillea? I think it would’ve nice to use the plumerias in leis.  They have a wonderful smell!!!

I’ll have to check out that book L&B!  Sounds neat!!!

Title: Re: Craftster Meetup 2020 - Aloha Hawaii!
Post by: Wulf on May 02, 2019 04:11:31 PM
I was also thinking of what workshops could be done using local materials, so nobody had to fly over with ten pounds of beads, etc. Hawai'ian quilts would be a good one, though they're so intricate that even a small design would probably take too long. (My mother set out to make one once, and after about half a dozen blocks out of twenty she gave up and turned them into cushion tops!) Wood carving would be something I'd love to teach, but it would require tools. Something involving shells, perhaps? Rubber stamp carving? (Also tools, but much fewer.)

Do they still sell those intricately carved and twisted candles? In the 70s they were quintessentially Waikiki beach. Again, something that would take years to learn to do well.

That round be awesome wolf!  Think you can manage to teach us how to carve tikis?

A Hawaiian quilt patch would be cool too and easy to do in one sitting.

We could also go hunting for puka shells and beach glass.

I think I saw those candles the last time I was home, but they don’t make them on site like they used to at the International Market Place in Waikiki.

I have a book on the history of American quilting, and the Hawaiian quilts have always been my favorites.  The white backgrounds with the bright red motifs.  Have you guys ever tried using freezer paper to do applique work?  That would make something like a single quilt square much more do-able in a shorter workshop.  You cut out the shape of the applique you want to make, from freezer paper, then you cut a larger one out of the fabric to allow room for seam allowance.  Then you iron the freezer paper to the fabric, and use the edge it creates to lightly press the seam allowance towards the back of the piece.  Once everything is pressed into place, you can remove the freezer paper, and then hand applique it onto the backing with a simple tunnel stitch (or blanket stitch if you want to see your thread).  We could turn the finished blocks into pillows, wall hangings, etc.

That sounds neat Jennie!

kbrison, yes I was thinking about this, but I wanted to chat with Mountains and Clouds about the best way to go about it.  There are places where we could learn individual crafts and places where we could spend a half a day or more immersed in it.

It seems like with this being such an epic trip that it should be a bit longer than the others have been.
What do you all think about the following itinerary.
day 1: meet, mixer
day 2: craft all day
day 3: sight see (we could split up into groups to go to museums, hikes, etc.) then meetup for dinner

There are cool places to eat that have live music and hula so I think we should do that at least 1 night.  We could also island hop for a day (day 4)

We have over a year to plan so I think we will be able to come up with an amazing meetup.  :)

Sounds good to me.

Yeah, on our ride home, sheepBlue, curiousfae & I all talked about what we would change in future meetups, based on what we learned in this one.  My first would be to make it one day longer, even if not everyone could do the full itinerary.  It was just so much crammed into so little time, and the 3 of us + Abbeeroad, even got a whole extra day, to do the stuff in downtown that we knew we otherwise wouldn't get.

Yeah, us too.  Averia, Anne, my mom, and I went into Asheville after the meetup and spent a few hours going to the shops.  Although by that time we were exhausted so we didn't stay very long which is a pity.

Coming out to Hawai'i is a big deal so I want to make sure that we get the right balance.  :)

I'm also determined to drag DH with me.  We've never once had a vacation together.  We've done a few visits to family, but never gone on a trip that was just for us, in the 15 years we've been together.  So I'm planning on us coming out for about a week before the Meetup, and either let him do his own thing while I'm with you guys, or perhaps he heads home for the Meetup portion.

Another thing we discussed driving home, is perhaps 'curating' (for lack of a better word) what workshops we offer next time, and plan to pick ones that A. can be done in a 1-2 hour slot, and B. could theoretically be taught to the whole group at once.  This Meetup we offered all the classes everyone offered to teach simply because they offered to teach them.  (And we were grateful, don't get me wrong!)

But then we had SO MANY people in Asheville, that we just couldn't expect teachers to be able to help everyone at once, so we had to cut some of the larger classes into two slots, but in the same overall time frame.  That meant holding two of some classes, and doing 2 classes at once for much of the day.  The result being that some people simply couldn't take one another's classes.  (Like clm & I couldn't do one another's.)  I wouldn't have minded having 15 people in my jewelry class all at once, but it just wouldn't have worked practically.  People wouldn't have been able to see my hands close enough, and I wouldn't have been able to give each student as much attention as they needed.

I know many people have already said they just can't afford HI, so this group is probably going to be smaller no matter what.  But letting people offer to teach certain classes, you could still, as the organizer, base what classes you chose out of all those offers, on time constraints, travel constraints, etc. to make sure we still have that free time to explore and visit.

Thanks Jennie.  You guys did a fantastic job organizing the workshops.  I loved them all!!!

I can't really remember how we did it in Canada, but it was different.  I seem to recall several workshops going on at once and people going wherever they wanted and spending more time at ones where they were doing larger projects, for example I think my mom spent most of her time with always doing the shibori dyeing.  There were definitely less classes offered.  Exploring Wulf's space and going on mini tours was also another fun part of the crafting time.  There was sooo much going on that day, but it was so relaxed.

With this smaller group it could turn out that we can all teach the entire group at once.  Anyone including hubbys that aren't interested can work on other things like getting lunch ready.  LOL.

Maybe we should take surveys regarding what people liked best, liked least, would like to have changed about Canada Meet-Up and Asheville Adventure. The results could help plan any future Craftster events. For instance, would the world come to an end if none of us taught a craft? Or if we arranged to have crafts taught by local people who aren't Craftsters?

Personally I like the idea of visiting local craftspeople and/or doing local crafts. and I agree with longer as i'll likely stay for 10-14 days all together, depending on when it is my husband might join me-if he can't I would totally love to explore with any of the lovely Craftsters!

I liked how we were less structured at the Canada meetup with a quick and dirty shibori lesson and the collage table where people could hang out and visit while messing around.  the visiting was the best part  ;D

At the Las Vegas STS meetup we did felting, drop spindle spinning, ATC creating for our individual ATC souvenir books again it was all pretty casual.  which was good because there were multiple $1 margaritas consumed throughout the weekend lol.

And with all the fabulous crafters with multiple skills I'm sure some roving assistants can be available to help take the stress off the instructors.

Hi wulf, maybe we should all pipe in on how we want to spend our time and on doing what.

I loved our meetup in Canada and I agree with AM that visiting people was the best part.  I was so happy to reconnect with old friends at the Asheville Meetup and to meet some new people too! :)

What I'm thinking is that those of us who are local can teach a bunch of the different crafts (lei making, Hawaiian angels, nose flute making, etc.).  We can also spend part of a day at fun places like a hike in Manoa, or visits to the Bishop museum, the Honolulu Academy, or The Contemporary Museum of Honolulu. At night there are places that have free hula shows and Hawaiian music. What I'd like to do is give us all a fun, local style experience that won't break the bank.

I have friends and probably Mountains and Clouds does too that can help us.  Jennie is also helping me find other Craftsters in Hawaii that might be able to do something with/for us.  There are alot of fun things that we can do this way that I want to explore.

We can also think about spending some money to do things that aren't easy to get for free like attending a luau.  We can also put together a list of experiences like Polynesian Cultural Center that people can do afterwards on their own.   It is a wonderful place, but it is pricey.  I used to go because I had the kamaaina rate which was affordable.  I think they also have discounts in the magazines around Waikiki.  https://www.polynesia.com/packages/

Anyhow the people in Hawai'i are very laid back and I think you'll enjoy hanging with us locals.  We can also explore all the stuff we have for the tourists too.  It's all good.

The first thing we all need to do is get a proper plate lunch!   This is from Yummy's...one of my favs.  All Hawaiian plate lunches come with 2 scoops rice and mac salad.  We love our mayo!!!

LOL.  Did you see Trevor Noah's reaction to the Senator from HI questioning William Barr?  (I don't wish to bring up an actual political discussion with that opening gambit!)  I just loved that his reaction was about how hard it is to upset Hawaiians.  "They live peacefully with freakin' volcanoes!  The volcanoes are all like 'rawrrrr we could explode at any minute' and the Hawaiians are all like, 'it's cool, we're just gonna dance!'"

Title: Re: Craftster Meetup 2020 - Aloha Hawaii!

Yahh! I step away for a day and the discussion explodes!  Getting caught up.....

[Side note, Mistress Jennie, politics aside, I am a fan of Mazie right now. She suddenly has this I-have-cancer-and-I'm-an-angry-woman-so-I'mma-say-what-I'mma-say attitude lately :P ]

Anyway, back to discussion... we don't have bouganvillea in our yard. I'm currently working on Ti, but we don't have many leafy things at the moment (but seriously, it's my current project, which should pick up speed once the school year is over!), so it depends on how much I can grow in the next year, haha!

I am not sure how previous meets have gone, but another thing to take into consideration is the amount of physical stuff people will end up with after crafting (since I'm guessing everyone will end up flying here).

As far as any workshops, etc. that need supplies that might be difficult to transport, things can be sent directly here ahead of time to save luggage space, etc. if needed.  (One thing to be aware of is our tight agricultural restrictions, so we can't really have plants, soil, meat, fruit, etc. coming in.)

Since it's in the summer, I should have time on either side of the meet to play tour guide for other activities. HA! I could even make a week-long itinerary of "optional activities" or something for anyone who might be interested (like hiking, beaching, etc.). I also sometimes volunteer with the invasive species committee... if anyone is interested in doing a group volunteer trip or anything, we might be able to organize something if we know ahead of time!

Yeah!  Thank you Mountains and Clouds!

We had tons of bouganvillea in our neighborhood in Aiea growing up.  Maybe I can go on a recon trip out there to get some for us?  They are nice in haku leis.

I'll be calling/texting you soon to chat and work on plans.  Ooh a group volunteer activity sounds fun.

Mine only gets a week for vacation right now, maybe by 2020 he will have a 2nd week of time banked by then, I'd love him to join me :) He's a crafter as well, though not yet a CRAFTSTER, lol. I need to get him to setup an account and post his projects soon. He's about to make a bird feeder for our backyard, actually! So, he may end up joining all of us and not just vacationing!

Oh, that plate lunch looks so good! My brother-in-law just taught me about mayonnaise on rice. I liked it, but my sister was giving us the ol’ stink eye - she thinks it’s not classy or something. ;D UTM and Mountains and Clouds, I thought you’d appreciate this bit of Hawai’ian cuisine that’s crept into Canada. Poke shops appeared all over the place a couple of years ago. (Poke - pronounced po-kay - is a chopped raw fish snack.) But I guess people didn’t know how to say it, because many of them now spell it as if it were French, with an é. That we know how to pronounce!

Oh yes, I’ve heard about poke shops becoming a mainland thing... there actually was (and I think it’s still ongoing) a situation with a Chicago “poke” shop suing Hawai’i businesses because they told HI locals they stole the name “Aloha.”

....

It might still be a touchy subject here!

TheSapphireMoon, that would be so great if your hubby became a Craftster... BUT all are welcome to craft with us, Craftster or not.  Everyone's S.O. were a bit shy on our last meetup, but hopefully everyone will jump in at the next one.  :)

Wulf...hmm, I don't know if I'd like mayo on rice...is it like mayo on fries?  The poke bowl craze is here in MD as well.  I haven't had any traditionally prepared poke at any of them.

M&C, seriously crazy!!!  https://chicago.eater.com/2018/7/30/17631154/aloha-poke-response-boycott-leis-poke-stop-anchorage-alaska

I would try mayo on rice. I ate mayo on saltine crackers as a kid. I think mayo on rice is probably a step up.

I just had a poke bowl for lunch from this newish place (around here any way) called Core Life Eatery (a chain).  I'm sure it was not authentic but it was tasty.

Mmm...  There's a place here in Franklin that just added poke bowls.  They were already doing eastern & soul food fusion, and had a truck called Funk Seoul Brother.  It was popular enough that they opened a restaurant too.  Now I'm torn every time I go.  Really good ramen, delicious bibimbap, or mouth watering poke bowl.  Decisions, decisions.

How lovely, underthemountain! I love wearing pa'u to dance, and am happy that my group wears them much more frequently now, rather than the sarongs of my youth. :) Will Lana allow you to mention which dancer she is?

While this is a dorky photo while we were waiting to perform in a Styles of Asia benefit fashion show, I do actually wear this outfit to dance. I'm on the right (in a Hawaiian outfit), and my teacher is in the middle (in a Samoan Princess dance outfit), and one of my Hula sisters is on the left (in a simplified Tahitian outfit). We're not strictly a halau, but rather a Polynesian dance group, though.  :D

If the date falls at the end of June into July, I am definitely in! And, if the date falls after our end of school w/ 5 snow days date, I can go. If we have more than 5 snow days, as long as my trip is booked by a certain date, I can go. With my travel voucher from the Asheville trip, my flight is set!

I’ll try to think of a small craft that I could teach (I have a great bracelet pattern...), too.

I went to Hawai’i in 2001 (I did the Kona marathon for charity), then spent time on Maui (with a day on O’ahu), before heading back to the Big Island tobtake an awesome volcano course. On O’ahu, my mom and I visited Pearl Harbor and the flea market, but with only one day, we missed out on most of what there was to do.

On Maui (on the road to Hana), I bought this amazing basket woven from a palm frond. I would love to learn how to make one!

I just learned to use Quick Cure Clay at the Adornments Retreat, and have been thinking I might be able to teach folks to use that.  It starts off as a malleable clay, and you use a heat gun or embossing tool to heat it for about 20 seconds, and it goes to rock hard and fully set in that short time.  I took a 3 hour class on working with it, then on our last day, we did a progressive Make & Take with all the instructors, and that teacher did a 20 minute version, where she had everyone (even those who hadn't taken her class on it), make a completed charm in 20 minutes.

But just to be a brat...  You might want to offer 3 or 4 weekends that work for you (since you're hosting obviously), but then let folks vote on the one that works best for them, so that the most amount of people can come.  ?  I know this will be a smaller group than Asheville, but I'm also sure you want as many as can possibly make it to be able to attend.  :)

Hmm, I've been thinking about that too kbrison.  What I am planning to do is research some of the places and share the options.  It is hard to ask everyone stay at a certain hotel, but maybe it will work out.   We can also look into a house rental.  I need to plan more with Mountains and Clouds on the location of where we'll be doing our crafting.

air bnb or vrbo are definitely good options faemystique!  Are you thinking of joining us in Hawaii?

I did make some comments... july may not work well however for myself because its when we do our salmon subsistence dipnetting here in Alaska... sad face so its still on my radar and I am still considering if I can swing it!

My mom was actually thinking of joining us, but she'll be traveling and won't be back in time. As for where we stay, I loved the house rental we had in Asheville, but at the beginning of the summer, I went to a wedding outside of Chicago. At the hotel, there was a group of people who had a scrapbooking meetup and used one of the big meeting rooms (I think it was 2 rooms opened up to make one large room). They had their stuff set up all weekend, and people were there out throughout the day (and night). People could go back to their rooms to rest when they wanted. The drawback would be that we wouldn't be able to cook any meals.

I'm hoping to stay a bit longer (or head over earlier... depends on when school is supposed to end) and see some things on Oahu that I didn't get to see before! I'm a bit anxious, to be honest, about sight-seeing on my own, so if others are thinking about extending their stay and wouldn't mind if I tagged along to see some sites, that would be great :)

faemystique, oops sorry.  I hope you can make it, but yeah, you can't miss the salmon dipnetting.

Yay!  Glad to hear it jellybean!  I think I'm going to go ahead and just make July 10-12 our meetup date.  It will be easier to plan with a date in mind.

I'm sure someone will be here to hang with you craftADDchick.  Mountains and Clouds said she'd be willing to play tour guide which sounds awesome.  I seriously don't know what our plans will be, but hope to join in!

Thanks, kbrison! That would be fun! And having Mountains and Clouds as a tour guide would be fantastic!

I have flexibility on my arrival and departure dates because I’ll be on summer break. I might run into a snag with a training I might have to go to, but hopefully, I’ll know well beforehand. I have to book my flight by April so I can use the voucher I got when I flew home from the Asheville trip.

I will probably be extending my stay to make it an actual vacation.  Waiting to hear if a friend is able to join me, if not I'm happy to go on a solo adventure  :D

Hi everyone!!

So sorry I disappeared for a while and got completely sidetracked by other things... I’m still here, haha!!

A few notes— weather in July is generally not the hottest. (August and September are usually hotter). It’s humid-ish, but as UnderTheMountain mentioned, we usually have the trade winds to keep things cooler than, say, the Midwest in the middle of summer. (But please bring some reef-safe  sunscreen, as the sun can seem much more imposing than most places on the mainland.

I think a big house rental would be super fun; one thing to be aware of is there have recently been some laws passed on O’ahu limiting short-term rentals, and they’ve been working their way through cracking down on “unpermitted” Airbnb’s and VRBOs. Some people had their reservations canceled at the last minute when the laws went into effect this summer. I’m not sure what exactly the rules are, but it might be worth asking any hosts if they have a City and County permit...?

I will be around (as far as I know) before and after the craft weekend, and can plan some group activities if there is interest. I like hiking and swimming/snorkeling, but am willing to look into more leisurely things as well. There are some not-so-extreme hikes to waterfalls (check out Mānoa Falls), or some slightly more moderate or longer hikes up into the mountains (like Kuliou’ou trail). Hanauma Bay nature preserve is a popular tourist spot for snorkeling. They do charge an entrance fee (and it gets pretty crowded), but there are a lot of friendly fish. The north shore beaches will be calm in the summer, so Shark’s Cove ( Pupukea) would also be a good snorkeling spot.

There’s also Pearl Harbor (the museums and Arizona memorial are free), as well as the Dole Plantation (suuuper touristy), and luaus. And many beaches.

(Feel free to google anything.)

YAY!!

I'm going to touch bases with Sara to see what she's found.

Hi everyone!

I wanted to let you all know that I haven't forgotten about our trip and that we should be purchasing tickets and making hotel reservations soon.  I've been checking around and wanted to ask if you could you please weigh in on where you stand in regards to our lodging if you are 100% sure that you are coming with us in July?

Would you rather stay in a home together where we'll be in one spot like this:

=or=

have everyone rent their own room in Waikiki and find spaces to do crafting, etc. together?

Mountain and Clouds has offered up her home as a meeting place and we can also sit on tables at the beach park to craft if we can't find a nice spot in the hotel.

One of the reasons I'm asking is that many of us are planning extended visits and might get better deals on our own.  Another is that the homes are tiny by mainland standards.

Anyhow everyone please weigh in if you are coming.  I'm going to message both the yeses and the maybes just in case some of you changed your mind and are definitely coming.

Thanks!
Rox

I'm on the fence on which I would prefer, so if others have strong feelings I could be easily swayed to a side. The Asheville house was amazing but I think part of that was how huge it was and that multiple groupings and activities could happen without feeling crowded. I also appreciated that there was enough space to find moments of solitude.

Never having been to Hawaii, I am completely ignorant of how to get around. Is there ample public/tourist transportation to get us where we want to go or would we be looking at several car rentals? Would it depend on which lodging option we choose?

Is there a chance we could coordinate and pick a single hotel like several of us did in Hamilton?

Title: Re: Craftster Meetup 2020 - Aloha Hawaii!
Post by: kbrison on October 25, 2019 12:36:21 PM
Jim and I would rather stay in a hotel, especially if we could coordinate with others to stay in or near the same place. As for crafting, I'd be fine with just working with local artisans in their workshops rather than any of our group having to tote gear to Hawaii or finding work spaces. I just love being with all of you, so (Oh my gosh! I'm about to be sacrilegious!) I'd be fine with us not doing ANY crafting. GASP!

Cool!  I personally think a single hotel that we can all stay at would be a better choice in terms of flexibility.  My HS friends have been researching the best place to stay and have settled on the Outrigger East. 150 Ka ‘iulani Ave
https://www.outrigger.com/hotels-resorts/hawaii/oahu/ohana-waikiki-east-by-outrigger

The public transportation is great.  They have buses out to place like the Polynesian Cultural Center https://www.polynesia.com.  We usually get a car when we are there.  I think we can figure the transportation out once we get closer to the date.  :)

Anyhow everyone else please weigh in!  We should settle this so we can start making reservations!  :)

Oh, for everyone who might be interested, remember back in the Asheville thread, when I recommended a podcast about food called Savor (https://www.savorpod.com/), that was doing a mini-series on Asheville?  Well they have just been working on one on Hawaii too!  They went to HI for 2 weeks, and interviewed various local experts on both traditional Hawaiian cuisine (ie, the traditional/culturally significant foods of the indigenous Hawaiian people) vs. Hawaiian regional cuisine (made up of the many other cultures & foods brought to HI by Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Filipino & Portugese immigrants).  So far they've published episodes on macadamia nuts (https://www.savorpod.com/podcasts/the-academia-of-the-macadamia.htm), poke (https://www.savorpod.com/podcasts/everything-is-poke.htm), lilikoi (https://www.savorpod.com/podcasts/a-passion-for-lilikoi.htm) (passionfruit), and poi (https://www.savorpod.com/podcasts/poi-oh-poi.htm), as well as the aforementioned one on regional vs traditional cuisine and the food renaissance currently happening in HI (https://www.savorpod.com/podcasts/welcome-to-oahu.htm).  I believe they will have more on other topics related to HI coming up.

Warning:  I did stop mid poke episode, and go to get poke to eat while listening to the rest.  You will want to eat all the things while listening!

I was at a wedding in the Chicago area in June, and at the hotel, there was en entire large conference room full of people scrapbooking. I like the idea of staying at the same hotel with a community crafting space. And, it's more likely to be near public transportation.

I, too, would like to coordinate with others who are extending their stay so I don't have to do things alone...

I'm going to have to take myself off the list for this meetup, as I'm blowing my vacation budget for next year on a family reunion for my MIL's 90 birthday on Vancouver Island in may.  With our very dismal exchange rate plus the rates on flights and rooms, I can't swing another big ticket trip this summer :(

Title: Re: Craftster Meetup 2020 - Aloha Hawaii!

With regards to our public transit, it would likely be easiest for everyone to be in Waikīkī, but I don't want anyone to stay there the whole time! (It's super touristy, and the rest of the island has a lot of beautiful sights!)

We have a bus system which can get you to most places on the island. :) I think most people prefer to rent cars. (Traffic can be another issue. OY. So having things be closer to each other can reduce that hassle.)

I just added a few more things to the doc (and will be adding more)
https://docs.google.com/document/d/10LStTX_A_M3Y3NScAzrmIBjpQzruYPHmI11hqZO8hdo/edit?usp=sharing
. I will hopefully have more to contribute after next weekend, but will hopefully be working on some of the appliqué quilt stuff this week whenever possible. :)

Yummy Mistress Jennie!  Definitely worth a listen!  :)

Bummer that you won't be able to join us AM, but I totally understand.

craftADDchick, I'm not sure that there will be a community crafting space w/in the hotel, but I think we'll be able to find spaces at the beach (lawn area).  Mountains and Clouds also offered up her place...we don't necessary have to craft indoors for these activities.  It's nice to be outside!

I'm going to be there earlier for my HS reunion and M&C lives there and has offered to take everyone around after the meetup so everyone will have lots of opportunities to do things before and after the meetup.

Maybe we could all chime in on our availability and how long we want to stay to figure out a rough plan for pre and post meetup events?

I’m thinking of spending an extra 4 days at least, I think, with an extra day in the other end for traveling, if that makes sense (so I don’t miss out on any time when we’re all together).

And, crafting by the beach sounds way nicer than stuck in a conference room all day!

I'm flexible as to when we arrive, when we leave, how long we stay. What I can't be flexible about is how much walking we do as a group. DH's health won't allow him to do much walking and he can't do any climbing or hiking, but that doesn't mean the rest of you need to limit your activities.  He's suppose to be getting a CPAP machine soon, so we're hoping that helps with his breathing.

I'm pretty flexible on timing, as well. And, I'm so out of shape right now that my ability to hike is limited. I'm hoping things will be a little better by next summer, but based on this moment, sadly, major uphill hiking isn't for me. I'm all for scenic drives, however :)

I think I'm naturally inclined towards the hotel, if we can all book into the same place. That way we can be all together and still have some space of our own. It would also work better with everyone probably arriving and leaving at different times.

The Outrigger East has a seniors' rate for over 50, which doesn't seem to be any cheaper, but allows you to cancel up to 72 hours out. That's nice.

I am looking at arriving on the 9th and leaving the 14th.

kbrison, if you don't mind, maybe you could PM me with how the CPAP works for him?  I'd be really interested.  I've had one for almost ten years, and it really didn't do much for me.  I was promised it would help me lose weight, give me more energy, etc...  I surely hope it works better for him.

On an Hawaii note, I b*^%&ed and moaned to DH today about how I could go to this meetup, if only my DS wasn't so stingy with his airmiles and biased about Hawaii (i.e.-too expensive, etc...).  I'm hoping that DH gets DS to just give me the airmiles to go!  Wouldn't that be perfect????  A bucket list dream come true, AND meet more craftsters????!!!!  I'd just faint from happiness!!!! ;D

Hi all!
So my family has decided that we cannot $$afford$$ to stay in Hawaii for 3 weeks.  I have my hs reunion on June 26-28.  The Canadian Craftsters wanted to have the meetup in July and kbrison had a possible conflict with July 4 so I set the date as July 11.  I was wondering if we could change the date to June 19-21 or July 3-5 instead.  Please check all possible dates.  If it has to be on July 11 I'll skip my reunion.

Hi everyone!

Thanks for voting!  Our new meetup date is: June 19-21.  I've added this to our main page.

Let's plan for a dinner-time gathering on June 19.  Place/time TBD.

It might be a bit early to purchase airline tickets, but we should all make hotel reservations soon.  It seems that we missed all the promos, but in thinking about some of the really fun and beautiful hotels I remembered the
Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort.

It's cool because it has a tiny lagoon (see the very bottom of the pic--it is cut off) and fun places to hang out at inside the village.  Anyhow take a peek and let's chat.  It seems they are all $400/night once the taxes etc. are added in.

I checked out the hotel through Hotel.com. Couple of things can make a big price difference. Main variable is free room cancellation vs. non-refundable. Add $50/night if you need free cancellation option.Type of room, number & size of beds, ocean or non-ocean view also affect the price. There's a $50/day resort fee charge in addition to the room cost. Rooms have furnished balconies, TVs, refrigerators, coffee/tea makers, irons, safes, and a number of other amenities but no microwave. There are 3 restaurants on site, several bars, and multiple pools. Breakfast is available but not free. All that being said, I checked the price for a room w/double beds for 5 nights (June 18-23). Non-refundable = $259/night plus $50 daily resort fee = $309. Free cancellation = $310/night + $50 daily resort fee = $360.

With Craftster closing on Dec. 19th, is this Meet Up even possible now?

Yes!! I’m here! I can finally focus on this (coming up with some Hawai’ian style appliqué quilt patterns)!

It’s possible I might be able to host a secret message board on my personal website too if that’s needed or helpful. I’d need to figure out the things for sure, but it might work...

kbrison, the Mods are working on ways to find/build us a new home to move to.  I for one vote a strong 'Hell yeah!' for going ahead with the HI Meetup.  And I am in the beginning stages of planning another Meetup in Portland, OR in 2021.  #CraftsterFriendsForver #MoreThanACraftWebsite #CraftstersNeverSayDie  ;)

And don't forget if any of you are coming to Ireland to reach out and let me know. Most of you have my email, pm me if you don't and want it.

Just give me a little time to complete moving the HPC to facebook temporarily, and to do a side project to hopefully help our fearless leaders in their endeavors, then I'll work on setting up a way to chat/plan a Portland Meetup in late 2020 or 2021.

Mountains and Clouds!  Woohoo!  I've been thinking up things too.  We should chat again soon to get our meetup in high gear!  :)

If I could afford it, I would, too. Besides meeting lovely Craftsters, I have family just outside Portland I haven't seen in over a decade!

Unfortunately, I can't make the meetup in Hawaii. I didn't book my ticket, yet, and we just had 2 snow days. So, while I could miss the 19th as a half day, I can't really get out of any additional days after that (especially because we haven't even hit our typical snowy season, yet!). I also might need to use a portion of my travel voucher to fly my sister to FL for Christmas (if that's possible), and then I have to get my porch fixed (my brother did a temporary fix this summer, but it really needs a full overhaul).

I'm hoping I can Skype in at some point, and I'll try to follow along with the planning (wherever that continues to take place :( ) so I know what's going on!

Sorry to hear that CraftADDchick.  I saw your pics.  WOW!

Hopefully we'll have a way to take you and others along with us.  We could always do a little Facebook live post.  :)

I think it's not only possible to continue with this meetup (and another in Portland - woohoo!) but it's even more important now that we're losing the Craftster we've known. Really, social media communities only have lasting value if they result in real communities, and the group of friends (some of whom have never met IRL!) we've all gained from Craftster will be its legacy for years to come. So I'm even more stoked to get together with you all to raise a Mai Tai to the memory of Craftster and to look forward to what will rise in its place.

::raises a glass to Wulf::  Here, here!

There are whispers of making Meetups (both big and small) a larger part of our future community.  And I for one will be working hard to make that a reality.  :)
