Title: Flowers of the Month Stitch Along
Post by: kittykill on January 03, 2019 10:07:09 AM

I decided to make a fabric flower of the month journal using the vintage pattern below. I would love for you to join me. Here are the details.

Each month I will post the pattern for the flower. If you wish, you can use that or one of you own. It just has to be the flower listed below and in the proper month.

You do not need to create a journal. You can do anything-a tote bag, tea towel, wall hanging.

The Flowers are:
January-Carnations and Snowdrops
February-Violets and Primrose
March-Daffodils and Jonquils
April-Daisy and Sweetpea
May-Lily of the Valley and Hawthorne
June-Rose and Honeysuckle
July-Larkspur and Water Lily
August-Gladiolus and Poppy
September-Aster and Morning Glory
October-Marigold and Cosmos
November-Chrysanthemum
December-Paper Whites and Holly

The pattern for December

So, grab a cup of tea and join me in the garden for some stitching and flower gazing! If you are a flower and garden nut like me, this will be so much fun. Share your favorite flowers and garden tips along with some fab stitching.

I am totally on it!

I am only going to do half sheets and would like to use solvy. Would you mind posting Feb as well? (So I can print both on one page).  If not, no worries!

And thank you for posting standard and reversed! I'm super excited!

Very cool! How are you going to make a journal?

I'm not 100 percent sure. I know that the pages are going to be fabric, but not sure if I want to mount them on cardboard or if I just want them to be fabric.

I've been contemplating if I want to stick to realistic colors, or go bananas and choose a color palette instead, and just use those.

And then do I want a similar tone across all 12 months? Or no. Hummm

So many decisions.

I started January's over the weekend and I was thinking the same thing. I think for January I am going to do pink carnations and then everything else in black.

Y'know, I've never really done embroideries from pre-drawn patterns, but I think I'm gonna give this a go! Maybe it will lessen the brain-stress of trying to be original and creative, and let me use more of the thread colors that get missed. (I'm looking at you, pinks.)

Hot off the presses! I managed to use up some pinks, that's for sure!  :P I really had fun with a pattern, going to try to keep this up for the year! I decided to add a dimension to the monthly thing by picking a fabric that's vaguely the jewel tone for each month's birthstone.

I couldn't decide how I was going to make mine, so the late start will push mine into Feb., too! But now that I did the first one, the rest will come easier.

Also, since we get to chat in here, DMC introduced new shades!

I don't often work in pastels, but with darker fabrics, I can see the appeal, and might try some out for this topic! Esp all those greens!

Thank you so much! Yes, it is a variegated, and I don't use it often enough either. I totally love carnations and they're often multi colored, so I thought this was a good opportunity to bust this out.

I'm in!! Drawing or choosing a pattern is a hurdle for me, so having a thing already decided every month will be great.

kittykill, your flowers are so striking and clean looking!

CH, I love the way you filled in and the birthstone fabric idea is awesome!

LTT, that pattern is lovely! I'm excited that you chose different one and we get to see more flowers but on the same theme.

Here's mine for January, right under the wire! It was satisfying to stitch, and I went with slightly muted but realistic colors because that's the vibe I get from the month. :)

Seriously! I thought it was just gonna be me. I'm SO glad to see people involved! It is so much fun!

I am ready to start planting flowers now! I am growing a cutting garden this year with sunflowers, hollyhock and maybe try carnations. Seriously, you have no idea how fresh flower crazy I am. If you follow my on Instagram, you will see all my bouquets through the year.

Some can be lots of colors, like carnations. Others, like this month's, I totally googled to find out. :P
Do whatever you want! And if you outline in black, you can always go back and color them in some other time, if it doesn't feel like enough.

Check out this stitched sample book from Million Little Stitches (http://millionlittlestitches.blogspot.com/2009/11/how-i-make-my-fiber-books.html). Would this work for your pieces?

JC I love your incorporation of applique! It makes the piece feel so much more dimensional.

kk I feel the same when I'm working on patterns - like am I doing this right? It doesn't look that nice! And then I finish it and look at the whole piece and it comes together well! Your color tinting is a great idea, I was wondering how to make these look finished on non-patterned fabric and this is just the ticket!

BBM glad you're here with us! The black lettering looks fantastic against the other colors!

OK I finished February and really enjoyed it. I immediately put it next to my January patch and am getting excited at having all of them together - it's going to look so cool! I found a background fabric that looks like light snowfall, which is typical February around here.

It turned out so pretty. Your stitching is so clean and neat. I really like it on the background since it looks like snow falling. The perfect combo of winter and a hopeful spring.

Speaking of spring-I have my flowers for my cutting garden all picked out. I hope to start planting in March or April.

I cannot say enough about how cool it is to see the different variations.

BBM  - the fabric you chose gives it such texture. Esp against the floral motifs. Neat!

AD - I adore the snowy implications. Brilliant.

I want to use all patterned bavkgrounds. All the time. Forever. Also, I haven't started mine, either. Feb  has been busier than expected.

March-Daffodils and Jonquils
April-Daisy and Sweetpea

hey CH  - the months and flowers are also listed on the front page (sorry to jump the line and answer)

Title: Re: Flowers of the Month Stitch Along

March is complete! Same features with only 4 floss colors. I decided to use light yellow to outline the daffodils, and 6 strands if darker yellow to fill. In some of the smaller fill spots, you'll notice I used french knots instead of lines.

This time, I used 4 strands of green, and did the (stem? Not sure name) stitch for the stems. I thought it would help offset the light yellow. I wasn't sure it was working, but when I saw it in morning light, I decided I like it.

Thanks for the knowledge, JC!

Just finished February. Kinda wish I had used a more contrasting thread for the primroses, but oh well. I do like how the violets came out, especially since I'm trying to use up lots of little bits of color.
For February Amethyst, I chose a satiny bit of fabric that was hemmed off of my prom dress way back when. I like the contrast of textures, but it pulled kinda weirdly.

It's interesting that so many stitchers chose yellow & purple for Feb. Then that pop of red is so different! It's hard to believe everybody started with the same pattern. Everything is so lovely & unique.

Finished the March flowers! Am I the only one who wasn't sure the difference between daffodils and jonquils? I looked it up and they look very similar, but jonquils have more than one flower per stem. I assumed they were the smaller ones in the picture.

Trying to catch up, and I think I'm going to get a light table to help figure out all those daffodil lines. The ones posted so far are lovely! And I still don't understand jonquils.

Title: Re: Flowers of the Month Stitch Along

Ooh, sweet peas are the sweetest!

"Daffodil: This is the official common name for ANY of the plants that fall into the genus Narcissus. So, if the plant is considered a Narcissus, it is also considered a daffodil as well. However, most people use the term ďdaffodilĒ when referring to the large, trumpet-shaped flowers of the Narcissus pseudonarcissus."

Jonquils have a strong scent too. It is a specific type of daffodil.

Okay, I FINALLY got through March. I'm about halfway through April, but I wanted to post this one because I'm so tired of looking at it, lol. I'm putting it away, charging through the rest of the sweet peas and getting ready to start on May.

I didn't care for how the contrasts came out (since they kinda didn't) but this fabric was my closest approximation to bloodstone, the March birthstone. Also fiddled with the lettering, wound up adding a final touch of a single thread of white just to get them to show up. I actually took a darker picture so you could see them at all. Shrug.

Thanks Kittykill!

I finished April. Still wishing I had chosen some better contrasts for this and March, but it's done and I'm happy.
I did go back and put some highlights around the letters though. This fabric was the best I could find for a diamond birthstone. Since May is emerald, I'm looking forward to something a little less varied and easier to contrast from.

Interesting. I appreciate the minimal look, so it's enticing, but would worry about security. I'm assuming as you've suggested it they never popped out?

Nope, they've stayed put! I don't put any additional weight on them, but they hold pretty well in the wood, probably better than in a cork board. For the record, the tacks are in the wood of the hoop.

CH I think you nailed it with the contrasts! And the variegation of colors on the leaves is lovely.

I actually did finish this last month, but then it just lived in my project bag and I completely forgot about posting it! I skipped the thistle because I liked having only two flowers per month.

So, I'm sitting at yet again another service center getting my dear friend "check engine light" worked on. After the first place replaces the same valve (it's and evap code) two times and said it just "gets dirty," then a week and a half later it comes back on, I tried a new gas cap, it came back on, and here I am for a second opinion. They found it was a different valve and feel 99% confident they found the issue. So, knowing these things can take a long time, the kids  brought electronics, and I brought my May (finally!) stitchalong to finish. I have June with me, too, but I don't think I'll need to start it.

Here is May:

I am oficially all caught up. I love larkspur, and I think this one is my favorite in the series so far. I decided to make the water lily light pink so it look like it gleams against the purple.

I ran out of the fabric from months Jan-June (I bought it back in 2014), so Jul-Dec will be this new fabric.

Has anyone made plans for what they are using their's for?

As usual, I am a day late and a dollar short.  There is no way I can finish even one of these beautiful patterns by the end of the year.  (I'm in the middle of embroidering pillow cases for all of my kids.  However, I love love love these patterns.  Do you have November and December yet?  I definitely want to make a quilt for my mother in law out of these patterns.

Thanks!

I do! I need to find them. I usually post two months together so I will post November and December together for everyone.

I still need to go back and do August.

Thank you for posting Nov and Dec. I have been debating all year about if I want to use these as a gift for our wonderful school secretary, and she is retiring at the end of the year, so it's nice to have some extra time for the last two months. I just haven't decided what to make with them--she wouldn't want a quilt.

I think I might stitch up November this weekend.  Ohhh! What a wonderful idea for a gift.

I finally figured out what I am going to make with my finished months--a sewn "planner" of sorts for our amazing elementary school secretary who is retiring Jan 1. I'm so glad I should hopefully be able to finish! Using fabrics SonjaBoo gave me at our lunch meetup over the summer, I am making each month a "divider" of sorts and adding pockets. I will not actually include calendar pages as the point is she no longet needs to keep track on the calendar (ha, theoretically!). I haven't decided how I will put it together, but probably with grommets and ribbon and cover of sorts.

Anyway, here is a pic of the very beginning stages of the put together stage:

What an inspired idea! And the rings allow for endless expansion!

I hope you share the final project in a thread! It deserves the love!

Poking along....November was finished late last night.

I will definitely make it's own post for my finished project, but until then, another sneak peek! Thursday I worked to get months Jan-Oct where they all had the "pages" put together and the pockets sewn on. They need bias edging still, but getting closer to being done! I have the fabrics and stabilizer, as well as pockets, ready for Nov and Dec. I did not have enough of the fruit fabrics for all months, so my dd and I picked veggies to alternate.

So good BBM! I'm plugging away at September, which I got really bogged down on because I spent so long scratching my head about transferring a pattern to denim. UGH. When I'm done I'll post that and August. I've got all my fabrics chosen for Oct - Dec, and this is hopefully going to be a Christmas gift when it's all finished, so time for warp-speed stitching!

I know all about warp speed stitching! I finally finished the whole project tonight (needed to get it done before Dec!)

I'll make it's own post soon, but for now, pics!

So glad to be done! And, so happy to have a break from the bias edging. I was getting good at it!
