Title: From Catholic School Uniforms to Plaid Suit Jacket
Post by: tendstowardschaos on June 23, 2018 12:51:42 PM
Obligatory Backstory:

Some of the moms from my DS's school got together for a crafting night. During the course of the evening, it was mentioned that our school's principal (who, funny enough, went to school with my husband) thought it would be hilarious to have a suit made from the plaid uniforms. I said, "let's do it!"

They got me some old uniforms (it took 4 pairs of pants and 2 jumpers), and I did the rest. My SIL did embroider an inside pocket with the principal's name, school name, and year...but, for sake of privacy, I won't share it here.

It had been a while since I had last made anything similar, and I have never done such finicky pockets, so I made a mock-up first. Maybe I'll have all the kids sign it for him next school year. ;D

Working with that polyester plaid was a dream. It's really great fabric.

We presented the principal with the jacket the last week of school, in front of the whole school. He absolutely loved it! So did the kids and other parents - I even got a request for a uniform-plaid kilt. :D At first, he didn't understand that I had made it from old uniforms - he thought we had bought it for him. Now, he says he's going to wear it everywhere.  :D

You did a spectacular job, really wonderfully made. I love the story so very much too, how incredibly fun!
I really like that incredulous moment of "Wait, you *made* this?!" That's the best!

What a great project!  Your school must have a great principal to deserve the work you put into this.  Is there a school emblem/patch you can add for the finishing touch?

He really is a great guy and our community/parish is pretty close. My son just adores him.

The school does have a logo, but I didn't have any old shirts/jackets to scavenge it from, nor did I have the embroidery pattern to recreate it. Since I already gave the jacket away, I probably won't be adding anything to it. If I make a vest to match, or do something with the muslin jacket, I may add the logo to that.  ;)

Very professional-looking job!  The only plaid items I've ever worn are the button-up, long-sleeved shirts.  It would have been really humorous if all the material had come from plaid skirts!  ;D

This is spectacular!  I love that you presented it to him on the last day, too.  I bet he will be wearing it often!

Thanks, Sweets! He was so excited talking about all the Catholic school meetings and functions that he was going to get to wear it to, make all the other principals jealous, lol. He even wore it to an auction the night he got it.

Thank you! It was partially made from the skirt portions of the jumpers (which look like this (http://www.idealuniform.com/images/gallery_huge/9459f.jpg)).
