Title: Help! Collecting words for Morse code knitting / fiber art project
Post by: amywike on February 05, 2018 01:38:55 PM
Hi all, I'm a DC-based knitter and fiber artist, and I'm gathering one word submissions for an upcoming installation piece that compares perspectives on Washington, DC. I'll knit all of the submitted words into one long string using Morse code as a means to make a pattern. To submit a word, head to this link and answer the question: What one word do you feel best describes Washington, DC? https://www.amywikeart.com/in-a-word/

A little bit more about the project: The idea behind knitting these words into a giant string, which I'll drape around the gallery space, is to give the words a tangible presence that visitors will literally need to confront and navigate through. The words will also be written on the gallery walls, so you can experience them both visually and physically. The exhibition compares perceptions of Washington, DC from a variety of vantage points, and invites consideration of the role and responsibility of an individual neighborhood within an overall city. To achieve this, the fabric of the installation is entirely dependent on collecting submitted words from inside and outside of the community.
