If you get your questionnaire filled today it shouldn't be a problem! You'll only miss the first day of actual crafting time.

Oh my goodness... Has it really been three years since the last round?  Mug Rug round 5 was one of my first swaps on craftster, and before I had a sewing machine!  Wow!  I've been really busy lately and putting myself on a swap break, but it is SOOOOOO tempting to join this, especially since I think I've improved so much since the last time! ;P  Hmmm... definitely considering it, for just partner anyway! That shouldn't be too hard, right??

Wow!  That is lovely, edelc!  There are just so many ideas for mug rugs....and so many fabrics to choose from!  A few years ago I also got a lovely crochet one backed by fabric and with a bead trim...love it...use it daily to set my mug of pens and pencils on...

Lots of good swappers here...ready to get going...;D

Ha! I did, that we because I cut a large plate, it was about 12x14 and I don't have a printing press, so I drove over it as my car is the heaviest thing I own.

You can get really good results with potato prints. I should do a better tute.

You got me!  I go through phases where I'll swap and craft like mad, take a break for a year or so, come back and swap some more, take a break, etc.  I've been focused on crochet like a crazy person for the last six months or so and finally coming back up for air.  I would love to have and make a couple of lovely mug rugs!  Thanks for hosting; I'm looking forward to it!

I have one from Edel that I plan to use for something else too. I like it too much to put tea cups and biscuits on it. Isn't that silly? I don't care, it's going into a patchy craft so I can see it all the time but not get it dirty.

Oh if you insist! It's a 24x48" canvas. The temple is fabric and free motion quilted, the. The sky is paint/plaster. Then obviously I had have add some paper to it (sheet music) because...papercrafter... we hung it up last night!

So glad I was able to sneak in under the wire because I've never swapped with Cabaute or Noooitaremybirthday until now. I'm really looking forward to creating something for each of them. Cabaute's fandoms make hers easy, so I'll be heavily checking Nooo's pins to see if her style is just as easy for me. Yeah! I love swaps!

I have such a cute idea brewing and I hope I can pull it off. Anybody have any tips for paper piecing? specifically making the pattern? I think that is what I will try to do to make this work. It's either that or applique. Not quite sure yet...

Title: Re: Mug Rug Round 7 - SU closed, SO 10/2
Post by: Thimbles71 on September 10, 2017 08:04:57 AM
Every time I look at paper piecing, I veer off into applique.  ;D  I do love applique, so that helps.  And paper piecing still makes me nervous.  I know there are some who don't consider applique quilting, but I absolutely love it.

curiousfae - Oddly enough, I like (don't laugh) MSPaint, or excel. It depends if you have a photo or you're drawing from scratch.

Break it up into major pieces, using the line functions in either to visually 'cut' it. OR just use a ruler, and then make copies. I tend to make 4 copies of something. One to use as reference and 3 to cut/stitch/manipulate.

There are also some good tutorials out there (written and video).  Maybe PM craftylittlemonkey, she recently made her own pp pattern and later posted about it.  Good luck, I can't wait to see it!

Thimbles71- Applique is a ridiculous amount of work. Ignore the naysayers - most of the time they're arging schematics or trying to 'educate' you, and it really doesn't matter in the greater picture. Just do whatever speaks to you. As long as you are making!

Thanks guys! Taking all your suggestions into consideration for sure. I actually bookmarked that CLM post when she first posted it just for this reason. Thanks for reminding me! And YouTube is great of course.

I was just playing around with a free program I found called QuiltAssist http://quiltassistant.com/free-quilt-design-software (http://quiltassistant.com/free-quilt-design-software). So far it's pretty helpful (once I actually read the directions  :-[).

Oh my gosh, don't ask me 'cause I don't know anything! I just winged that. What really helped was trying paper piecing first so I understood how it goes, the reverse image thing can be very confusing. Also using big enough pieces of fabric, I kept thinking I could use teeny scraps but the angle is never what I thought it would be when the piece gets flipped over.
I like a combo of techniques, regular quilting, paper piecing and appliqué all work great together and you can get whatever design you're after, anything is possible.

Today I spent an undisclosed amount of time brainstorming a design for my partner. I found a trillion wonderful patterns out there. A zillion great ideas. Nothing was gelling. I was confused. Why can't I settle on a design? Why can't I decide?!?!?

It was only after I realized that my embroidery fetish was rearing it's head..."If you can't embroider something, is it really done?!?!"  ::) WTH?!?!

Luckily, I just found something that sings to me...and should jive with my partner's wants...AND can be a combination of quilting and embroidery! Yay!

You gotta listen to that muse peeps.

I'm not sure my questionnaire was much help, so here are some more details about me: I love nature, flowers, quilting, kids, chocolate, architectural details, fantasy (dragons, fairies, gnomes, etc.), literature, baking, camping, miniatures. Between this list and my pinterest boards I hope you'll find something that appeals to your crafty muse. I know what I want to make for you, but not sure yet how I'm going to pull it together. May have to do a lot of trial and error . . . so I can keep the 'not quite right' ones!  ;D

Okay. I cut the base layer. Then I _________ the _________ to that. Then I cut the ________ and __________ to that second layer. I picked a range of colors for the embroidery and put them with my current travel kit. I forgot to grab a hoop, so I can't embroidery today; but maybe get some done tonight. I am also still working on the Twinchies swap.

The kids were being outrageous so I put them to bed early and went down to sew... and I think I might be done with both kbrison's and acadian's mug rugs. I am tempted to send right away so I don't try and add more embellishment and ruin anything. Maybe I'll just keep the boxes out and toss fun extra  things in as I feel so inspired to....

I LOVE to plan. Plot. Stalk. Dream big. It's not unusual to have diagrams. No joke.

Unless it hits me early, I ALWAYS have ridiculous lists. It's really just reining in my own crazy to fit the requrements. And deadlines are A MUST. That's the only way anyone gets anything.

I have solid ideas for both partners. So much fun!

Back from my trip and catching up today - I was able to do a bit of stalking while traveling, but not much else!  It is SO HARD not to just repin all your partner's pins that you like in order to remain secretive  ;D

Lots of awesome in this thread... hints and funnies and helpful info (thank you for posting the tutorial, alwaysinmyroom!) and did I mention I love kimono fabric?  And fun fandom things?  I'm so excited, and, people are about to send, what?!  I feel so far behind.

I love both of my partners themes and colors and have so many inspirations, now I need to start focusing in on which direction to go and get on it.  Back to work tomorrow so I will probably be toward the later end of the sending window - I need at least one full weekend to do a nice job and finish things properly, and like to take my time on the creation.   :)

So happy to be swapping with you lovely people <3

Have you ever had one of those cases, where you are making something and suddenly realize that the last thing you did (it's done now) is / was ONE STEP TOO FAR?!

And then, you try to save it, by taking 2-3 MORE STEPS?  ???

And finally, you take even MORE STEPS (noooo, go back :o :o :o!!!)

And then, by some miracle of the gods, your finished product actually ends up being AWESOME?!  8)

Yeah, today was not that day for me.   :D

Luckily I was just working on a personal project and not my Mug Rugs!!!   ;D

4. I'm not hijacking this thread, so let's circle back to:  your kind of crafting crazy is cool! It looks like acrylics, but did you do a vinegar spray on the dog layer, and then finger prints? You should give it's own post so we can hear!

I feel your pain, cabaute!  I think sometimes that I need to plan better, but I tend to be a crafter that dives in and hope that it works...it drives me crazy but to the point where I am determined to make it work! ha ha

I love your t-shirt...the dots are very fun and the colors are wonderful...and the dog...I love dogs.

LOL I worked on it EVEN MORE this morning, if you can believe it, trying to "fix" where I smudged the fabric paint on his foot by filling in using fabric markers.  For the main body I was experimenting with various Tim Holtz alcohol inks (the blobs are droplets of those) and some color wash (which apparently washes out in water).  I used some puff paints to outline. I probably should have done some research first, but I was just throwing it together at the last minute and 'playing'.

I think it wound up OK, I wore it today to the game!

It looks terrific!  You are just your own worst critic, I think!  I love the "blobs"...You did a good job saving whatever you thought needed saving, ha ha ha...

I had to leave town for a few days to attend the funeral of a dear old friend I've known all my life so nothing happened craft wise but ... I had a wonderful time catching up with her family and friends I haven't seen for 30-40 years.

I'll start on my project tomorrow.

Homerof2, you were just on my mind because I ran across the customs receipt from our swap last year as I was trying to clear my computer desk. I'm so very sorry for the loss of your friend. You'll remain in my thoughts and prayers. Wishing you the very best!

I hate what I am making.

I'm switching over to complete the one for my other partner and give my brain time to ruminate.

Both will be done for sendouts on Monday, though! No worries!

I am in a similar boat! I have started three different times with all of them going wonky on me. This effort, no matter what, will be the last! Dagnabbit!

YES! I have tried to fix it, but sometimes you just have to cut your losses. I ADORE my colors, but everything else is just a hot mess of unhappiness.  Maybe if I would have done the first piece last? Doesn't really matter, I guess. I'm disgruntled. It's ugly. Thhhhhhrrriiibbbt

Take a beat, curious. You are so talented, and have such a good eye, I'm positive you will find your way! Get it, girl!

I'm still working away over here.  I decided to incorporate something I've never tried before and it is taking a lot more time than I expected (I always do this, I imagine how magnificent something is going to be if only I just incorporate this brand new thing, which then takes me 3x as long, and looks half as good as I imagine, because I've never done it before... ::)).  I may switch tracks and go with a more tried and true route if I can't wrap up the 'special' part I've been trying to finish.

Mine are DONE!  But today is Hokie game day which means I won't get to the post office until tomorrow (the PO will be closed but there is a machine I can use for postage, and a drop bin).  I went through 4 mug rugs to get 2 I'm happy with.  The other two will go up in my STS shop  - they are ok but I deemed them not right for my partners. :)

Haven't had Internet for the past few days (infuriating! frustrating! and big time annoying!), so am finally able to post photos of my mug rug and goodies from noooitaremybirthday.

I know you'd never guess, but nooo REALLY likes birds. This is the card she sent plus a cute ornament that my daughter's cats will destroy if I ever let it leave my craft room. On the positive side, the cats also kill bugs or any snakes that get in our garage so they're not all bad.

Then nooo was cleaning out some of her paper stash and sent some of it to me since I'm a cardmaker. As AIMR will swear, I love to use small bits of things in my crafting, especially fabric and paper, so I'm excited to start using these goodies.

These and the bird papers were some of my favorites. A chipboard dragon! How awesome is that!

Now for a teaser: the reverse side of my mat. If you look closely on the right hand side, you should see nooo's name integrated into all the other texts. Sneaky! But in such a cool way.

Then the best of a great package . . . drum roll please . . . the gorgeous flowers and word 'grow' on the front. Nooo used black scribble stitching and touches of white paint to give the piece something of a primitive, mixed medium feel that I adore! It may never see duty as a mug rug but be hung on my craft room wall instead. Thank you, nooo! You've been a great partner!

Tracking says my international package is stuck in customs. A flat package listed as 'fabric', 'sewn fabric', 'gift', and message 'ENJOY'!

Why. Why. Why.

*crazed finger biting* (nasty! stop that!)

Because customs (while necessary etc) are evil!

I posted the first round of feedback - just going on PMs at this point. If you have completed the swap but haven't received feedback yet, it may be because I couldn't find a message in my inbox saying you and/or your partner received. Don't worry! I'll go through the gallery soon to match up my lists and get you your feedback soon. Thanks everyone!
