Details of swap:

Are you an EPP junkie? Does the sight of neat little stacks of stitched up hexagons make you smile with delight? Do you have dreams of making a quilt with hundreds of hexies? Could you use a bit more variety in your hexie stash? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then this is the swap for you!

In this swap, you will be exchanging 24 squares of quality, 100% quilting cotton with up to each member of the swap. This may mean that you will have to send out of your country, but fabric squares are small and light, so postage should be lower. You may also have the option to swap finished hexies and/or a small item made with hexies (such as a pincushion, mug rug, etc.).

What size squares do you need?

The size of the hexagon is determined by the length of one side. So, a 1" hexie has sides that measure 1" each. To determine the size of the square you need, refer to the information below.

1/4" hexie = 1" square
1/2" hexie = 1 1/2" square
3/4" hexie = 2" square
1" hexie = 2 1/2" square
1 1/4" hexie = 3" square
1 1/2" hexie = 3 1/2" square
2" hexie = 4 1/2" square
3" hexie = 6 1/2" square

So, it seems like the formula for the size of the square is: 2X the side length  plus a 1/2".

So, a 2 1/2" hexie would need a 5 1/2" square (2 1/2" X 2= 5", plus 1/2"= 5 1/2")

Note: If you need larger squares, but are partnered with someone who needs much smaller squares, you may want to consider sending your partner a few extra squares :)

What do I need to know about sending finished hexies?

A finished hexie is one that has already been stitched into the hexagon shape. When sending finished hexies, please adhere to the following guidelines:
1. Please use card stock (or index cards) to make your templates so your partner can reuse them.
2. Please punch a hole in the center of the template to make them easier to remove.
3. Please be sure that your template is the correct size for your partner. Remember that a hexie's size is determined by the length of one side.
4. Please leave the template in the hexies when you mail them.
5. Please check with your partner to see if they would like you to stitch through the template to the front along the sides of the hexagon. (While this can hold the template in place, especially for larger hexies, some people don't remove the basting from the hexies. It can also reduce the number of times the template can be reused.)
6. If you plan to use glue to help to hold the template in place, please check with your partner first. Also, please make sure to use a glue stick that is specifically for use with fabric.

What can I make with my hexies?

Well, if you don't want to make a quilt, I've started a board on Pinterest with some ideas for smaller projects. Check it out here: http://pin.it/pB0s5aT

Ok ladies ya'll made me into an addict with this last swap.  When was it? THis past August maybe?  I had never made a hexie but had always wanted to and to date have made 2431 1 inch hexies for me.  Anyone who was in that swap may remember I was inspired to make a quilt.  Not only have I made all of them but have joined all but 5  what I call flowers with each flower using 19 hexies.  Once those are made I have then used black hexies to go around them which takes 18 for each.  I have two rows totally connected and only 612 more black hexies to cut and stitch around my flowers.  Then to join the  rest to my two rows.  I will try to post a few photos here just to show ya'll  my progress.

I may just join so that I can make 2 pillow shams..... to go with my king size quilt!

Holy cow, quaggy! I am speechless! Those numbers are impressive!!! Wow... I bow down to your hexie greatness!

And yes, you definitely need more hexies to make pillow shams ;D

And, in the last round, I bought fabric that represented my region/state (New England/Massachusetts), but I totally forgot to cut it up and send it, and I think I have fabric to represent the town I work in (I can't remember how much I bought). So, I think I'll be including at least 1 "special" hexie for everyone :)

Just look at this hexie addicts progress!

My 2 rows sewn together.....this is the width.

Here are the ones that I have sewn the black hexies around my flowers and ready to join to the rows above.

and these are the ones waiting for me to finish 5 more of then I will be cutting and making my last black ones.

So anyone who thinks they can not do these little hexies.....think again!  Yes it is all hand sewn and once you start.....hmmmmm you just may not want to quit!

I just looked at the photos of what I sent to everyone last year. It will be a fun challenge to make sure I don't send anyone a duplicate :) I have plenty of fabrics to mix and match, but another fabric road trip might be in order. I will hit 2 specific places to get the most bang for my buck :)

Just sent my form in!  Re templates:  No probs - I still have the files I made for myself last time, I just need to make sure they fit ok on US letter paper.  :)

The difference for me this time around is that I finally bothered to sort my scraps into colour groups.  Should be a lot easier to find the right colours for people this time!   :D

Maybe under "Additional Options" when you upload a photo? You might need to be a Friend of Craftster to do it. I'll look into it...

ETA: I checked out the News and Discussion about Craftster board. There's a section about adding attachments (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=381540.0) - you need to be a tutorial contributor to do your own uploads or ask the mods to do it.

I should be able to upload them for you... I'll send you a PM.

So, instead of grading papers this morning, I took a field trip to a quilt shop in NH that was having a clearance sale. It was just over the border, about an hour away, and with all of the rain we've been getting, it was too nice to spend the morning in the house :). They also had a deal where you could fill a bag with scraps for $5, and because it was my first visit, I got a free FQ, which they kindly cut off of the bolt for me! They let me take fabric cuts that were less than a yard (unlike a shop I stopped in last year...which was stupid, so I won't be going there again!). Every one in the store (customers included) was super nice. And, I had to laugh when another customer asked me for my opinion in picking out a second fabric for her t-shirt quilt. She even told another lady that I gave her "expert" advice! It's especially funny because I usually am the one who needs a second opinion when picking fabric colors :)

Now, of course, I have to go out to the car and get the stack of papers that I need to grade...

I am not going to put any color restrictions on my hexies only because I am in love with the scrappy ones I have been seeing lately...I want all the colors...lol.

I'm definitely going for the scrappy look! I'm supposed to be packing for my DC trip, and I have less room for a crafty busy bag than I have had in the past. I'm bringing hexies and a small cross stitch project. No bulky crochet projects. Hopefully, I can start to make a dent in the hexie "to stitch" pile!

While I am not opposed to getting other colors, I really really really love blue. My neverending WIP hexie quilt is entirely blue and white. You would think I would have made some progress since our last round but I have not stitched one single flower since.

Either way, my scrap bins are ready!  XD

I've also got a bin for teals, but I think they're a bit too green.  :)  Just as well I have a pic of what I sent last time so I can choose some different ones this time!

I have been working on a blue and white "tile" quilt for about 5 years now...so I always have tons of blue fabrics! Funny, when I go to a quilt shop, I think of you, Averia, and always walk out with some blues for "someday"...lol...I also pick other fabrics from what I remember from other swaps (zombie fabrics, sheep fabrics, tiny birds, etc.)...it is all of you guys fault I am a fabric hoarder!!!

Just sent my questionnaire in, and I'm so happy to have caught this swap in time!  I missed the last one and was bummed about it.

One question:  I understand about the quality cotton fabric, but are batiks OK to send?  Some quilters don't like working with the tighter weave, so I'm not sure if they're allowed in this swap or not.

As for batiks, I don't see an issue with sending them. I'm pretty sure I sent some in the last round.

I can check with my partners when the time comes.  I just wanted to make sure there wasn't a general travel ban on batiks.   ;)

It's kind of ridiculous how excited I am for this to start.  I can't wait to see what comes back!  Someone else's scraps are always more interesting than my own.  Maybe because I've already used them in a project?

So, we're at 8 swappers, and I'm 99% sure that everyone said they'd swap with everyone if we were around that number (I'll double check in the morning). If nothing changes overnight, I'll get addresses out as soon as I close the swap :)

Amazon_warrior very kindly designed 3 sets of templates- .75", 1", and 2" hexies- and if you'd like any (or all) of them, send me a PM with the e-mail address you'd like me to use and I can send them to you.

If there is a size you need that isn't listed above, Amazon_warrior has offered to add any that are missing. Thanks, Amazon_warrior!

Same for me - I think I put 1" but that is the size of the hexies, the squares would be 2.5"

Does anyone have a favorite fabric collection? I've only really been looking around the last few weeks (trying to use my stash instead of buying blah blah) but nothing has really struck me. Although this Sam & Mitzi has some tiny kitty cat prints
(https://www.fatquartershop.com/sam-and-mitzi-fat-quarter-bundle) that I don't feel like I can pass up. And when this (http://www.hulucrafts.co.uk/blog/2013/11/scrumptious-bonnie-camille-moda-fabrics) came out, I fell wildly in love with it and am so obsessed that I saved every teeny tiny scrap and sewed them together to make big enough pieces to use.

So what about you?

I'm not a true quilter, so I can't say that I have a favorite fabric collection. Sometimes I see a fabric I just have to have, but I've never bought a collection.

my favorite fabrics might not be what you mean by quilting fabric collections, but I love all the stonehenge fabrics.

ah yes, stonehedge. I like some of the crossweave, as far as something akin to a solid and I love the cotton and steel solids, just something about them.

Today was the last day of school and after I packed up my classroom, went home and unloaded the perishables (plants and chocolates) from the car, I headed back out to the fabric store. I loaded up 2 carts with fabric! One was knits to make some shirts but the other was quilting fabrics. At $2.99/yd, even with a one yard minimum , I was grabbing whatever bolts tickled my fancy!  With FQs at JoAnn Fabrics at $2.49 each, I got a great deal at the $2.99 store!

I think that, starting on Sunday, I'll be arranging my fabrics for each of you. It will be a nice way to spend my afternoon!

Yesterday, I spent the day with my mom and aunt as we all tried to learn how to use our sergers.  My aunt and I each bought ours several years ago, but never used them. My mom just got one last week and was itching to use it. So, as soon as school was finished, we got together! At one point in the day, we made a trip to the fabric store (a VERY similar one to my local $2.98 store). Since I had given my mom and aunt some of my knits that I bought on Friday, I had to buy more, plus some cottons for EPP! If I buy any more fabrics, it will be a run to the Quilt shop out in Lee, MA to get some of their end-of-bolt cottons. And that's it, really...

I need 2 1/2 inch squares of fabric for 1 inch hexies.

Same for me - I think I put 1" but that is the size of the hexies, the squares would be 2.5"

I see now I put 2" but that's also the size of the hexie template, the squares would be 4,5".

I feel kind of stupid because I checked it twice before I sent it in ... But at least I'm not the only stupid one  ;)

I have started by buying the envelopes. I'm going for a more organized approach this time. I'll start with the envelopes and a little note with the size / colour requirements attached to it. I see I'm the only one again asking for larger squares - of course I'll throw in more than 24 hexies for everyone.

CraftADDchick, I'm not sure if I'm jealous of the amount of cheap quilting stores in your area, or happy we don't have them. I'm sure my house would be full and my wallet would be empty if I lived close to shops like that ...

LOL! It's funny that so many of you did the same thing on the questionnaire! I even went back to check how I had written the question. At least you all caught it early!

And, I do seem to have a lot of inexpensive fabric shops around (the one from Saturday was out by Boston, however). It's both a blessing and a curse... ;D

I so wanted to get these mailed prior to my leaving before this Friday on a weeks vacation.   Guess that is not going to happen..... at least I do not think so.   If any are ready and sent, I will PM you.

My son will be staying at my house while I am away so any mail that might arrive will be brought inside.

Plans are to load our camper on the back of the truck and head to First Monday Trade Days in Canton, Texas leaving about 3:30 in the AM so we will have all day Friday Saturday and Sunday to shop.  This place is huge over 100 acres.  It has been about 23 years since I last visited.

After that we are heading to Arkansas to dig for diamonds.   I have always wanted to do this and before I am not able to gonna make it happen.

Then we may hit the casinos in Louisiana on our way home.    Gonna just make like a Gypsy.

Have fun Quaggy! Sounds like a great trip.

I have just written all the envelopes and pulled out the fabrics that I'm certain I bought this year. I'm going to use these first so I can be sure there are no duplicates. I'd hate to send the same fabric twice, but I didn't keep proper notes. I'll have to rely on the pictures in last year's gallery.

For me it's not difficult to write your addresses as I speak English, but I feel sorry for you guys for having to copy my street name letter by letter  ;D If I remember correctly, every envelope I received in last year's swap was addressed correctly though, while about half of the mail I receive normally contains at least one spelling mistake. Well done everyone :)

I have been gone without my Craftster password and couldn't log in.  The suspense was killing me!  :o
I got in late last night, so I've got  a bit of catching up to do before I begin to play.  I can't wait to commence digging, though!

Aspenwall, I don't have a favorite collection.  I've always chosen fabrics individually rather than as a group.  I do tend to like Tula Pink, Alexander Henry, Bonnie Christine, Paula Nadelstern, and Dear Stella.  Please do not consider this a shopping list, though.  Tula and Kaffe are the only designers I can recognize; I don't even know who I have in my stash (ironically enough neither of these).  When I purchase any fabric I look at color and pattern before the selvage, so I'm not really brand or designer loyal.

Ah, I see others already caught the square/hexagon kerfuffle!  I was trying to make a checklist this morning and couldn't get my head around it at all.

Currently I have

AIMR - 2.5"/1.5"/3.5" squares for 1"/0.5"/1.5" hexies
quaggy/craftADDchick/Averia - 2.5" squares for 1" hexies
Immaculata - 4.5" squares for 2" hexies
Eamea - 1.5" squares for 0.5" hexies

Is that right?  ???

0,5" hexies, I thought Amazon Warrior was crazy last year with her tiny 3/4 " hexies and now some people want even smaller ones :D

I didn't ask for stitched hexies this year, because I found out it's easier if you use one standard sized template. The first few rounds I didn't notice the very slight size difference in templates, but after several rounds it became more and more noticeable. One person last year used bought templates, white ones with a hole in it, and they seem to be the best size. Do you happen to remember the brand name of those?

Floating around on my laptop hard drive, I have a design that would require 1/4" hexies!  (As well as a bunch of other sizes.)  But I haven't been mad enough to try making any yet.  :D

I bought the 1/4 inch templates thinking they would be good for a dollhouse quilt, but it is tough to fold the fabric just right for them.

I buy Dritz paper pieces, other than for 1" - I bought the Fiskars punch for 1" since I use so many of those. I worry that I wouldn't be precise enough in my cutting if I tried to print templates.

You guys!  Don't make me the tiny hexies...I admit I was rushed in doing my questionnaire so I cut and pasted from something else!  Just make the 1.5 hexies!  I need to check everything...I am traveling in July so I need to get everything cut before I go or else I won't make the deadline...I am going to do my best not to do duplicates...I don't mind them myself since everything I do is scrappy or used in other projects!

I don't mind duplicates from last year either. I'm making a massive scrappy project and no one will notice if a fabric is used 1, 2 or 5 times.

I started cutting for you in multiples of 2.  I misread and thought you wanted 2-6 of each print.  I will cut the rest of the 3.5" squares as singles but will send what I already have cut if it's OK with you.

I bought a punch that will make uniform 1/2" hexies, so that's why I went with that.  I think I'm going to make a color wash something (wall hanging?  runner?  quilt?), but I'm not 100% on that.  I also thought about putting diamonds between the hexies; who knows what will actually happen? LOL

I asked for fabric only for the reason you cited.  I was afraid that I would end up receiving slightly different sizes that I would have to make fit.

I don't mind multiples or different or same...I have a punch I use as well...I will post the correct sizes...just no need to make the teeny hexies as they are a pain!

I bought my templates and have tons...I would be happy to send them along as well...I bought them from Amazon...I punch a hole to easily remove them...they do not come with holes...

Realised when I was lying in bed last night that I've been cutting 2.5" squares for Eamea, and they asked for 1.5" squares!  D'oh!  At least I haven't done loads of them yet, and it's easier to trim down than scale up...

I need to label the ziplock bags I have for everyone too, or I can see myself getting very confused!  XD

(Although I might see if I can rustle up a bit more card for bracing - I still haven't forgotten/forgiven what happened to CraftADDchick's first envelope last time....)

Royal Fail decided to put it through a woodchipper rather than delivering it intact.  :(  craftADDchick received a shredded, empty envelope and a feeble, "Sorry..." note, so I re-did her envelope and made sure this time that I put everyone's bits'n'bobs between two bits of card, so that hopefully nothing will get stuck in any toothy machinery....

It was unbelievable that they actually sent me the shredded envelope and didn't just return it to Amazon_warrior (the return address was full legible)! And, Amazon_warrior graciously sent me a replacement package!

Based on the condition of that envelope, I decided to put my items in a baggies inside, and I think I stuck the address in the baggie, too. But, now I can't remember :D

After a fabric shopping trip today- I needed 2 specific things but came home with more than everyone else, combined, I think- I have amassed a very large collection of fabric and scraps for this round... I just gathered it all together and I didn't realize I had accumulated quite so much :)

I think I'll be cutting a bunch tomorrow!

I just updated the gallery with sent/received/posted pics status. If I missed something, please let me know!

I made a dash up to school today to try and catch my principal to talk to him about the upcoming year. Still no definitive answer, but A) I do have a job, B) Most of my co-workers still have jobs, C) I should be teaching science, D) I won't have 40 kids per class. So, it's really just the grade level that I don't know and I'll just have to relax on that for now.
Which means that tonight, since it is not hot today, it will be a good night to press all of the fabric scraps that I have (How fun is it to stuff a bag of scraps!?! Not so much fun to press them, however... ) so I can start cutting things.

Whew!

So, I have to apologize, because it looks like I'll be sending a bit late. I spent multiple hours yesterday (2+ episodes of MidSomer Murders) ironing all of the fabric scraps (and fat 16ths) I picked up for this swap. I am currently dog sitting until tomorrow (in another state), and brought what I needed to complete the prerequisite coursework for the class I'm taking, which starts Monday. Based on the last course I took with this program, I expected the coursework to take much longer. I'm already finished, but didn't bring anything else to work on (I didn't want distractions). Tomorrow, after I leave NH, I have to drive to NY to visit a very sick family member (if he survives until then :( ). Then head back home (at least 5 hours of driving all together). I won't get anything done tomorrow night, but I'm thinking I might have a little time Monday night. Maybe...

Worst case, I'll be sending on Saturday. And, I know I had a month, but job stress and a busier July than I expected threw me off my crafty game.

Awww, sorry to hear about that craftADDchick, especially your poorly family member.  :(  If it helps, absolutely don't worry about sewing my hexies - I would also be totally fine with just squares.  (Same goes for anyone else, too, if you're feeling pushed for time!)

Thanks, Amazon_warrior. I might take you up on that. But, I'm hoping to get a few sewn (maybe not 24) for anyone who asked.

I had enough ready to send a couple weeks ago and was thinking to myself "eh I'll just wait till the end and get a few more done for everyone here and there" Ha, time completely got away from me. Hopefully I can spend some time tomorrow getting everything all organized and ready so I can send on time. I am so much happier with long crafting periods but sometimes that isn't enough to let me get things done. Life happens. Please do not feel a need to sew anything for me. I'm perfectly happy with unsewn. I think I may take a month or two off from swapping and get all my hexies organized and sewn into flowers. Quaggy is an inspiration to me

Awe thanks Averia!  Lady's feel free to just send me my squares if needed.

I have still been chugging along on my quilt.  I only have......19 flowers to go around with black hexies which means I now need to cut and stitch up 342 black hexies and attach them to the flowers.

I am going to save the ones I get from this group for my 2 pillow shams.

I did receive one package and will post and send proper pms tomorrow.

Life has been busy.....my son sold his condo and I helped him move back here to a third floor apartment for now.  A co worker's 28 year old son passed away this last week  so there was visitation and a funeral and I have been teaching certification classes 2 nights each week for the last 2 weeks after work. This next week I teach all 5 nights.  I also had to travel 1 1/2 hours one way to observe another  instructor for an evaluation. Life needs to slow down.

I am late...no excuse except a job crisis...but I have several packages all ready to go...just have to address them and get them to our "alternative" post office...it is summer and the state has decided to re-do the road in front of our post office, so we have to go to another one that is miles away...grrrr

I'm late, as well, and have been a very absent organizer :(

My carefree and craft-full summer hasn't turned out like I expected.

No worries on the lateness as far as I'm concerned.  It just means I have more squishy mail to look forward to.  ;)

Well, life happens sometimes. We all know what it's like. And in the end, sending off packages of fabric squares has a fairly low priority compared to family, health, jobs, etc. I'm sure everyone will send out as soon as they're able to and I don't mind waiting a little bit longer at all.

I sent today! I'll send DC#s and Customs #s in a bit... I have to say I can't believe how much international postage has gone up! Wow!

And, I typed out a note to each of you, with your address printed on it, tucked them in with the squares, then sealed up the packages. And realized 2 things: A) I forgot to sign the notes and B) I forgot to explain the "special" squares that I sent...

In order to not give anything away, but to give you a hint, I will say that one square represents the city I live in (the fabric resembles Worcester's city seal {just a bit}), one represents the city I work in (Leominster is known as "Plastics City" and something iconic was manufactured there), and the third represents my state (Massachusetts)/region (New England). I'm guessing that you all will be able to figure it out :)

Feel free to pass those squares on if you can't use them. I saw the fabrics and I thought it would be fun to send them.

I've also got a few packages of squares to photograph and post. I need to go back and check which ones I already posted...

Now, I need to go and catch up on my inbox of about 20 unread PMs.

Whew! I just went through the gallery and my PMs and updated the sent/receive status.

If you have a minute to check it to make sure it's accurate, I'd appreciate it!

I'll leave the first batch of feedback once I get caught up the other swap I'm organizing (I think I cursed myself this summer by organizing 2 swaps at once... silly me... I should have known that life would throw me a curveball or two :) ).

I really like the idea of including symbolic fabrics! I bought a pack of postcards from the local tourist information center to send to everyone. I always like it when there's a special personal touch in a swap package. I received from alwaysinmyroom today and she also put in a nice home made card.

I received my final package today from our fearless leader!  Thanks craftADDchick!  I really loved one of the fabrics so much...hint: pink bird! lol  oh, and I know which piece represents your state! ha ha ha

Immaculata...the card was handmade by my friend MissingWillow. I always ask for notecards since I am not that great at making them...so, just passing on more craftster talent! ;D

Hooray! And, I actually had the fabric for my state/region in the first round, but completely forgot to send it... And when I came across the others, I decided to send them all in this round!

While we still have a few pictures of lovely fabrics that could be posted, I am declaring this swap "officially finished and flake free!"  Hooray! Thank you all for being such a great group of swappers. Your flawless communication made my job easier during a somewhat trying summer. Getting happy little packages of fabric in the mail made it even better!
