I'm glad everyone is excited! I'm excited to see what is created from this:)

If anyone if interested, I recently started a blog. Today I made public my second post where I discuss the film 13th, mass incarceration and systematic racism. No pressure to check it out! Just trying to figure out how to create the collective communication!

Hooray!  I also love the image at the top, and will probably mention that on my Q as something I'd love to get a version of. :)

I'm working hard to catch up on the swaps I'm already in, but I have two already in the mail that will hopefully arrive soon to open up a new swap slot!  Assuming one arrives before this closes, I'll be in!

The questionnaire wasn't easy to fill out.  I'm kind of afraid that I gave too much information that wouldn't be helpful to my future partner.  I've never done an "activist" swap before.  Still, I think this swap thread will generate some interesting conversations!  We may not all have the exact same views on all topics but I trust this community to respect and support one another.  And I'm looking forward to doing some "activist" crafting!

Unfortunately I think I'm gonna have to sit this one out.  I really wanted to join, but have been pretty overwhelmed with a lot of stuff lately and need to put a cap on the number of swaps I'm involved in.  I'm looking forward to the gallery though!!

Joined! No pressure on my future partner, but I'd love to get a cool shirt. Today my boss (I work at a daycare) wore a shirt with a gravestone and grassy plot on it, and the stone read "RIP patriarchy". I feel pretty confident that whatever activism I wear, she'll applaud it.  ;D

While we wait for partners, a conversation starter:  I've made an effort to not say "his name" as much as possible, especially on social media.  Instead I refer to him as "45" or the current president.  I have developed a sort of phobia to putting his name in writing.  Does anyone else have this issue?  How do you refer to him?

~Forgive me if I'm leaping to the conclusion that others interested in this swap are also not supporters of our current administration.  I am also trying my best to keep things civil and not resort to name calling on social media as well.  I'm trying my best to respect other opinions while standing firm against what I see as a distortion of American values.  it's not always easy nor is it always reflected in my personal dialogue!~

I have this issue, too.  I cannot bring myself to refer to him as President.  Or combine his name with President.  It's just all kinds of wrong.  I tend to avoid his name or use 45 or Drumpf.  I feel ridiculous sometimes, but it's just where I am.  His name is his brand and I will do absolutely everything I can to not give it the tiniest, littlest, most obscure mention.  No, no, no.

To me, he's the "president." (ugh)  So, I refer to him as DJT. Or just Trump.  I cringe every time the MSM uses President in front of his name.  And honestly, it's not because Hillary isn't president. Even though I wasn't a fan of Bush I accepted he was the President. DJT is not a President. He's an imposter. I feel like America doesn't have a president at all--we are in an interim between Obama, and whoever comes next. I am in the camp of we need to get rid of him, Pence, Ryan...and

I REALLY WANT a #VoteYourOssoff shirt for Georgia's #FlipThe6th. Man, I wish I could vote there.

All my sympathy from here in Canada. I personally think of him as "that big dumb orange character". I don't consider him very presidential either, I mean Bush was crazy, Palin was funny, sort of, but this guy? Colour me scared of all things politics these days. I'm avoiding the news until your next election rolls around. In fact, I'm not paying attention until it's over, too stressful. Please let me know if anything good happens between then and now :/.

Nope, he's just Trump to me. Not worth much else. I try to pay attention to what he and his Republican cronies are doing, not the showboating stuff. Makes me even crazier because that's the stuff that is hurting so many people. ARGGGG. Deep breath, think of crafting. Another deep breath. Ahhhhhh

I'm wondering how many of us are 'crafting through our feelings' over Trump.  I will be interested to see in a few years if museums do any sort of retrospective on art created out of this dumpster fire of an administration.

I have a dear, dear friend who doesn't have a lot of money, but loves to knit, so she's taken to making toys, scarves, mittens, etc, anything fast and quick that she can make and basically give to anyone making a donation to Planned Parenthood, the ACLU, etc.  She's raised almost $1000 for charities so far.  Crafting a resistance.  I love it.

My friend did that in the month or so before the Women's March.  She made nearly 300 felt pussy hats and gave them all away to anyone who promised to donate to Planned Parenthood.  Obviously, everyone was on an honor system but she knows that at least $700 was donated, hopefully much more.  Inspiring!

I hope I didn't cause any anxiety by bringing Drumpf into the conversation.  I understand the desire to blot him out.  But every time I want to, I'm reminded how important the fight is.  Still, self care is vital so I hope we all remember to be good to ourselves!  Crafting is good therapy but don't neglect chocolate, exercise, bubble baths,...whatever it takes!

She had an assembly line set up at home, apparently and a few friends helped her out one weekend.  And she was able to work on them while at her paying job.  She's one of those somewhat scary people who, once they have a goal in mind, become rather relentless!  I try to stay on her good side!   :D

I made a total of 3 hats and one of those wasn't finished until after the March!

I'm the complete opposite. I never used to watch the news, but now I watch it constantly. MSNBC, obviously not Fox. It's funny. Before the idiot started calling it Fake News, I used to put "news" in air quotes when talking about Fox. Granted, I like the liberal slant on MSNBC, but there really is no way to make DJT look good. I never was very political either. I keep politics off Facebook, but Twitter is more fun now. Every day...what did that idiot say? He sure does make Palin look smart, doesn't he? My favorite tee right now is the "Nevertheless she persisted" I got for donating to Elizabeth Warren's campaign.

In my house, he's basically like Voldemort- we don't say his name. My parents have slipped a few times, but I literally haven't used it once since this whole sh*tshow started. If he has to be referred to, it's generally "did you hear what tire fire did now," or "garbage can said the most pathetic thing today". He doesn't really deserve a proper title, in our opinion.

The garbage pail kid certainly made me giggle.  I'm rather torn about how far to go with making fun of "him".  I have come to believe in a basic level of respect for the office of president and the concept that degrading the person holding said office is also degrading the office itself ( a realization I finally had during George W's last term).  But this petulant child currently sitting in that seat seems to hold very little respect for anything - the constitution, morals, basic courtesy...  So I don't know where the line is anymore.  In my eyes, 45 is a vile, petty, and soulless creature and I simply don't understand how we got here or how anyone (especially those who consider themselves Christians!) thought he was a viable choice for president!  Ugh!
Sorry!  I'm bringing things down again, aren't I?

So, I have work today.. (Not to self, when organizing in the future double check you don't end SU's on a work day..)
I will hopefully have partners sent out this evening, tomorrow morning at the latest!
So nervous, this is the hard part about organizing right? Picking everyones partners?!

You might have seen the video outtake from it. Mansplaining at its fines and then "Let her speak, please!" from the audience. I can't believe this shit is still happening. (Well, I can. But it still sucks)

Thanks for posting that. I've posted it to my wall.

As for the swap, I've determined *essentially* what I would like to do. I am finishing up my personal flag for the Prayer Flag swap and then I will get moving on getting supplies together so I can start *making* stuff. Definitely glad for the long crafting time.

Just pulled out the supplies for a Small, and an extra.  Still contemplating what I want to make for my Medium...

Edit: Completed a Small and an Extra, then because I was having fun rocking out in my studio, I went completely off previous thoughts & plans and made a completely random Medium that I'm really happy with.  Woot!

Wow, that was fast!
I started a piece today but I don't think I'm as happy as I want to be with it.. practice round!
Tomorrow i'll work on my more familiar craft idea, then come back for round two on this one :3

Hope everyone's feeling good!

I've seen the Indigo Girls numerous times and I love them. I've never seen Joan Baez in person, so this is going to be a treat. OK, we'll be on the lawn at Tanglewood, not real close, but the weather looks to be good.....I hope.

In real world matters..

My city is full, FULL of refugees. Hamilton and Toronto were slotted to received many and we have. 46,700 to Canada last year alone. I don't know how to help aside from voting progressively, raising loving children, and supporting agencies that do good work. Oh, and being a decent human being in public, something that seems beyond some frikken people ('scuse my french). I am fairly anti-religion of all sorts so it's difficult for me to participate in some events and such without it being a trauma to me personally (nothing compared to what many of them faced, I know, but still shakes me up) but there has to be something else I can actively do.

It is overwhelming out there at times. And we do what we can. Stay informed, contact your representatives even if they are already on your side, they need support too. Take care of yourself, you have to stay strong too. I try to look at what is happening and not get caught up in personalities...it's too distracting from the actual harm going on out there beyond my 4 walls.

I have a friend who donates to some cause once a week. Small amounts, but she spends one day a week responding to requests for money. She does mindfully pick recipients and only spends a small set amount. I have other friends who call daily/weekly, go to town meetings and gatherings, write postcards and send faxes, work with immigrant groups, etc. etc. I mostly support through design donations, websites, flyers, logos, etc. We all have to find our way.

We save all year to make donations, the kids set aside part of their weekly allowance for that purpose and we match it so they really feel like their money is helping in a big way. We give to 3 charities, one local, one far away, and one to health research for a devastating condition that runs in our family. They also get additional money for every A on their report cards that goes to the specific charity of their choice. Robert believes in paying for grades and I do not so that's our compromise.
I feel like it's important to raise healthy future citizens and we are helping our 3 savages become mindful people. Aside from that, I guess I will step up where opportunity presents itself. My mom was an activist, always bringing us to marches and demonstrations. She worked for so many women's organizations, was a part of the California grape boycott years ago, recycled before there even was such a thing. I learned good lessons from her. I don't know where she got her energy from with 3 kids on her own though.

Definitely feeling demoralized.  I know it'll be a day or two of wallowing and then a matter of pulling myself together and focusing on the 2018 elections.  And what can be done in the mean time.

I bought fabric for the Welcome Blanket project and will start working on that.

I'm enjoying working on this swap, too.  I made good progress on my medium this morning.  I'm using it to keep my hands busy rather than engaging with some crazies on Facebook.  ;D

Times are tough indeed!  (Trumpcare, cops being let off for more black deaths, even more environmental issues!) But I'm taking inspiration from a little something I'm working on.  There are times when I look at our society and I say to myself, where the hell am I?  But I'm trying to concentrate on the positive and the concept that we can only go up from here!  Even if it takes a revolution!  Stay true, everybody!

I also recently contributed another piece to my blog on sexual fluidity. Maybe kinda sorta applies to swap topic if anyone's interested in the read!

I attended Pride in Toronto this weekend, and participated in a research study while I was there. Science students from the University of Michigan were scanning people's hands and taking saliva samples for genetic evaluation. From what they said, someone's natural sexual orientation can be determined by the relationship between the lengths of their first and ring finger (or so they were trying to prove). There was a questionnaire to fill out as well, which was a bit tricky. Things about how many cousins of each gender there are on both the maternal and paternal side of the family, what orientation those people are, etc. One of my uncles had 12 kids and if any of them were queer, they certainly weren't going to be out!

Interesting for this group- apparently there's also a connection between orientation/gender identity and creativity/"flexible working intelligence" (whatever that means!).

For those who were wondering: in women, if your ring finger is longer than your first finger you are more likely to be gay, have a predisposition towards traditionally "masculine" interests such as working with your hands and sadly (literally) towards depression/anxiety disorders.

All of this lead me to wonder if this research would lend credence to the argument (for the icky kind of fundy christians) that if there's a genetic basis for queer identity/expression and it's intrinsic rather than learned, then God made them that way for a reason. Which is to say, gay is part of the Plan and you have no right to persecute people for being a different part of god's plan than you!

Meh... my post was eaten. Not much progress to report. I've started sketching out my "no clue what size it will be" item. I still need to refine the sketch before starting. Winging it in this medium tends to turn into disaster.

I found this fun sticker downtown yesterday. It says:
"Catriarchy against patriarchy" and under that "Pysen's little cuddle-army"

I also went to dye my hair pink yesterday. Not a feminist statement, but it made me happy :)

So, not much of a status report, but I'm off to research another idea...

That's really interesting about the research study!  I'll be curious to see where it goes once it's peer reviewed.  It's a fascinating premise!

I also understand making something that you NEED to make for whatever reason.  I currently have something stuck in my head that is giving me a few fits about how to actually get it done.  But, I have a need to do it.  Which is a bit bothersome at the moment. ;D

Supplies arrived just before the weekend and I've finished most of my bigger item.  Unfortunately, I had a fail on another item but have a totally different idea to work on.  Here's hoping that works out.

Do you know what I hate the most about our current situation politically?  Even tho' I know darn well that I should be focusing on policy issues, I can't help getting upset about all the undignified tweets our so-called Commander-in-chief keeps spewing from the White House bathroom at all hours of the night.  How his supporters can keep defending his bile is beyond me!  Argh!  So frustrating.  We really need to keep calling our local representatives and let them know of our resistance to Drumpf's policies, be they healthcare related, environmental, immigration or one of the many, many other issues that are so important.  Let's make sure they know what our future votes will depend on!!!!!!  I keep reading about how the right wing has been manning the phones incessantly lately and I hate the thought that liberals have become so complacent (which I'll admit to being guilty of sometimes since I live in a very liberal state!).  Call!  Write!  Petition!  <Sorry, once I get started, I just jump onto pulpits and have a hard time shutting up.  I'll calm down a bit now.>

I've been wondering if the tweets aren't the most brilliant distraction tactic ever. Everyone is so busy reacting to another idiotic tweet from the White House toilet that they aren't paying attention to what's actually being done. (Which may or may not be nothing.)

First item looks good, but made zero progress today since my brother in law decided to sand furniture in the space I used for crafting. O. M. G. I was almost done adding the ___ to the _____ when I realized I had been doing it upside down the entire time D:
There's gotta be a way I can modify this without having to start all over... my life D:

Just stand on your head! :o Sorry. I made the pattern for the mini quilt I did and then forgot to reverse the pattern for paper piecing. Had to do some modification so the world would come out the way I had envisioned....of course no one else would have noticed it was upside down. But still.

So good luck.

I'm getting worried about finishing on time... what I have so far looks good, but every step takes time. I should go start my small while figuring out the rest of it.

I want there to be a 'smedium' flat rate box.  My package was too big to fit in a small flat rate, but the medium had lots of empty space that I could have filled up with more goodies.  If I hadn't set aside that day to go to the PO for the Burrow Swap too, I might have held onto this one an extra day just to fill it some more.  I hate wasting space in flat-rates!

Bigger thing: Done, or at least past the stages where I could have mucked it up. Might put a smidge more _______ on the _________, but that's it. I even figured out how to ship it safely. Smaller thing: first thing I could have messed up done without incident. Looks good, for now. Sadly no chanche to get it done in time to ship today :(
