Title: Flying key block, PDF pattern added!
Post by: craftylittlemonkey on March 14, 2017 02:29:35 PM
The lovely Mistress Jennie offered to send me a pussy hat in exchange for a surprise. After stalking a bit I settled on a pouch with a flying key design a la Harry Potter.

I couldn't find a pattern I liked for free or even for sale so I thought I'd try my hand at drafting one myself. I am very new to paper piecing but I do have a fashion design background which includes pattern drafting. Even so, it's tricky with a bunch of fiddly little bits that were really hard for me to get just right.

Paper piecing is CRAZY!

I've been waiting to share this until MJ got the little pouch I made her but it looks like it's been lost in the mail so I'll be resending it soon. I'm bummed 'cause I think the zipper turned out great. Ah well, good practice for next time, right? Yay, the first pouch finally made it after an adventure through the postal system. It is a flying key after all, ha ha. In the meantime I sent this replacement so now she's got a matching set.

I sent the pattern off to a few people here to beta test and it came back with the A-ok so I will be happy to share it with you guys once I've figured out how to attach a PDF file. I sent a query off and hopefully will hear back about that soon :). am very happy to share it with you here. Click on the PDF to copy it into your files and give it a go! It seems to be upside down but it will print just fine. Please let me know if you stitch it up and how it went, feed back is appreciated!

This is SOOOOOO STUNNING!  Beautifully sewn, and even more amazing to have drafted the pattern for such a fiddly shape!  I'm so in love.   ;D

ROCKS.

Thank you so very much, it means a lot that you like it :).

I'm looking forward to sharing the pattern here, I hope a few of you will try it out and post your pictures. I know a lot of you love all things HP.

I confess - it was traveling around the atmosphere and I stole it!  ;)

It is awesome and it's sad that it is lost.

This replacement pouch is on the way to you now Miss Jennie.
I squared the bottom of this one & the zipper turned out great!

It was my second time stitching the block & it turned out better than the first one so all's well that ends well :).

You did a fantastic job on both pouches! What a bummer that one went missing. I really like how you reversed the fabrics on the second one though. Great work as always :)

They are both gorgeous!!! You did a great job. Hopefully the first one finds its way through the mail.

Beautiful work, CLM! Paper piecing is so counter-intuitive - you're so brave to draft your own pattern. And you nailed it!

Is that Indigo-dyed shibori fabric by any chance?

Thanks gals! It isn't shibori but that's a great idea.
I really hope the first package makes it's way there eventually, a matching set would be nice.
I'm using the tester's feedback to tweak the pattern then it'll be posted, stay tuned!

That is awesome!  Definitely ROCKS, and really sucks that the first one went *poof* in the post.  :(  Looks like you did an amazing job drafting the pattern.  :D

How large is the block? Cause I'm making another Harry Potter POD. Bookcase and I would LOVE to include this in...

Hey lady, I thought it would be good for that bookcase project for sure. It could be easily modified so the key appeared in a bell dome, can you pattern draft? If not I could work it out and add it to this post.
While I'm figuring out how to attach a PDF here I could email a copy to you. It's not a big block, the key itself is maybe 4" tall, but you can add however much fabric you want around it to make it fit or change the size, though I wouldn't go any smaller as there are already very tiny pieces. Message me your email address if you are in a hurry, if not the pattern should be attached here pretty soon.

Super cute, I recently tried paper piecing and its not as easy as people make it sound IMO. So I think this is great

amazing. You should have my email on that art quilt questionnaire...
And now I know who to send all my paper piecing pattern requests to. ,;) I have a couple of ideas I want but they don't exist...yet

Email sent :).
We just watched the first HP movie last night to vet them for the kids (way, WAY too scary for my 9 year olds, my goodness, this is a kid's movie?!) and I realize I took liberties with the wings making them double. What can I say, artistic license. I will draft another pattern with an optional bell jar and post it here. And anytime sloth, might as well make those years at fashion design college useful, ha ha.

The PDF is attached in the first post, please share if you try it. Share your triumphs and your flubbs please, I will learn more about refining my pattern drafting from mistakes :D.

I sent the pattern to fandom in stitches and they are linking directly to this post on their site. Neat!

Alright! I'll see if i have some scraps on hand that I can use - I've been meaning to make a hotpad anyway and get back into quilting, so this looks like a good project to start with. Will let you know how it goes!
