Title: "sounds like home" secret music swap (sign-up closed; mail by 13 Aug)
Post by: acesulfamek on July 26, 2005 10:10:18 AM
Swap name: "Sounds Like Home" Music Swap
Craftster member who is organizing this swap: acesulfamek
Sign-up date range: 26 July - 3 August
Date to send item by: 13 August

Limited to a certain number of people? (optional): Not a set number, but if there are too many people from the same city we may have a problem making matches - that seems unlikely though.

Non-U.S. participants allowed? Yes.

All ages allowed? Or 18+? All ages, provided you are comfortable with / allowed to hear potential "mature" lyrics.

Organizer is aware of current list of "suspended traders" list and will not allow those members to participate: YES

Organizer meets the 4 conditions for swapping and will make sure that every participant meets these conditions: YES

Details of swap:
...

This is a cd swap, where you will send your partner a mix of music that centers around your hometown (as you define it - be that where you live now, where you grew up, etc).  This can be bands from your city, songs that mention or were inspired by your city, or other songs that you think have a connection.  Your goal is to give the person who listens to your cd an idea of a "Soundtrack for X Town".

In the package, along with track information please briefly explain to your partner what the connection between each song you chose and your home.  Also, please include a picture that you think represents your city best as the "cover art" for the cd (this can - and I hope will be - interpreted creatively and craftyly).

In some cases, you can expand the idea of "hometown" to mean a bigger area (such as country, etc), if you want, but please just run it by me and/or the group first.

This swap is a "secret swap" in that you will not know who is sending to you until you open your mailbox.  I will assign someone from a different geographic area, but you will not know who that person is.  Since we are making mixs based on our own preferences and cities most of all, I think this will work out well (no need to ask your partner for her measurements or anything in this swap).

If you want to participate, information to send to organizer:

QUESTIONNAIRE TO ANSWER:
Name of swap
Craftster username
Email address
Your real name
Mailing address
Would you be willing to ship to an address outside of the US? (Remember you will only be sending a cd or two)

SPECIFIC QUESTIONS HERE...

What city/region/area will you be representing?
What is your connection to this place?
Are there other places you have lived (to make sure you get music from someplace unfamiliar)?
Very generally speaking, are there genres of music you especially like or dislike?
Are you interested in music in a non-English language (if this comes up)? Any particular language?
Do you prefer regular music cds or data/mp3 cds?

Optional Bonus Question: fill in the [blanks] - "my city is better than [another city's name] because of [reason]"

IF YOU WANT TO PARTICIPATE, REMEMBER TO SEND YOUR INFO TO ORGANIZER VIA PRIVATE MESSAGE AND NOT TO REPLY WITH IT HERE.

Also remember to read the Swap Info Guide (https://www.craftster.org/swapsinfo.html) to find out how to ship your item and other details about participating in a swap.

AFTER PEOPLE HAVE SIGNED UP AND BEEN APPROVED, LIST THE PARTICIPANTS HERE AND WHO IS SENDING TO WHOM:

2. Washington, D.C.
3. Seattle/Pacific Northwest
4. Geneva (Chicago) IL
5. Lubbock/West Texas
6. Vancouver, B.C.
7. Baltimore, MD
8. Montreal, Quebec & Winnipeg, Manitoba
9. Vilnius, Lithuania
10. Chattanooga, TN
11. Huntington, Long Island & Morningside Heights, Manhattan, New York
12. Orange County, CA

14. Northborough, MA

P.S. Just because someone else is doing the same place as you would doesn't mean you aren't allowed to participate - in fact, it might be neat to see playlists representing a couple of perspectives on the same city.

Just so everyone knows, Geneva, IL is basically Chicago, IL ;) so you have some frame of reference.  I think this sounds like a blast!

i quite like this one.

That makes two new swappers... heh heh... but it does sound fun. Great idea, much better than just swapping music. Yay.

hehehehe. i can't help but wonder if the orange county participant will just burn the OC soundtracks?
*runs away before they can hit me for buying into stereotypes about where they live*

i'm so excited. everyone else seems to live in terribly exotic, exciting places.

something that I think is neat is that the places seem so different from each other.  everything from "ChattaNOOga" to Lithuania to Australia.  fantastic.

ETA: I am amused that the two most recent joiners (since I posted this) are both from Mass.   ;)

Yeah, I was surprised that I didn't see any Mass-types on the list when I was signing up. And now there's another. I bet we'll have some overlapping songs.

Too bad that all of the songs I can find are in Lithuanian, arrrgh. And not all of the songs which mention my city are in my opinion appropriate to symbolise it. Oh well.

I'm trying to walk the line between songs ABOUT my town, and songs that I actually LIKE. It's harder than I thought. But fun!

Hehe sounds like we're haveing similar problems. A lot of the songs on my umbrella list seem to be songs that would make more sense to me then to the town. Ah well I'll just have to listen to them all and sort through. Yahoo.

I feel ya...I had to force myself to avoid those songs that defined my time in high school and actually had nothing to do my town or anyone else! :-P  It's starting to work, though

ive had the same problem as well! its sort of like, this song reminds me of my first kiss. which happened in my town...no, no that's not ok. ive only gotten about six so far, and i have to make sure that im not just using things because they name the town, but its getting me to explore my itunes at least.

most of the songs I'm using so far are by bands from or based in my city, rather than about my city.

Title: Re: "sounds like home" secret music swap (sign-up closed; mail by 13 Aug)
Post by: lupinbunny on August 06, 2005 03:13:14 AM
i'm using mostly local bands, but i had to ditch some fabulous tracks (one i REALLLLLLY wanted to use sampled the sounds of my favourite cafe) because they just didn't sound perth-y.

and i'm importing some outsiders' tracks coz they do sound right.

(btw, i'm new to this whole thing. when do we find otu who we're sending to?)

I was planning to have already sent you the info on who you would be sending to.  Unfortunately, I procrastinated a little, so you probably will not have them until sometime this weekend.  I have to drive from Chicago to DC  and once I get home (either late tonight or tommorow) I will send them out.

ETA:  I am back home now!  I am going to figure out the send-tos tonight, and will send them to each of you as soon as possible.

Post by: juliel85 on August 07, 2005 01:23:12 AM
yeah, I've decided local bands are a good idea as well.  I also tried this trick: think of 5 words to describe your town and the people in it, then think of songs that correspond with those words.  I've gotten a few good tracks from that.  Good luck to all!

Title: Re: "sounds like home" secret music swap (sign-up closed; mail by 13 Aug)

I have send each of you a PM with the name and address of the person you are sending to.  Remember, it is supposed to be a surprise for them - so please don't go sending them notes letting them know it's you.

If you do not have a PM from me please let me know as soon as possible and I will try to fix the problem.

Also, I forgot to include in indvidual messages who wanted what type of CD.  Please do not burn your discs until I let you know - I wouldn't want you wasting blank CDs all willy-nilly.

I was wondering, are people going to include something explaining why each song is relevant?  I thought about doing it, but I wasn't sure if it was something we were doing...?

Lupinbunny:  FYI I'm from Orange County and none of the songs I've chosen for this swap are from the soundtrack of the Show or the movie, though I think both are hilariously inaccurate accounts of what it is like to grow up here.  That's not to say that I didn't know people in highschool who were the rich, stuck up type, but none of the people I surround myself with are.

shhh! opiate_rose. don't go ruining my deliriously inaccurate conceptions of your delightful county! That show is an absolute gem of beautiful people in beautiful clothes doing clever, witty things.

(i try to represss the knowledge that, to my limited understanding, the OC has a brilliant punk scene, yes?)

Yikes, I haven't even picked out all of the songs yet. How many have you guys got? (just to make sure that I don't have to pick another 20) I've got 13 so far and am thiking about 3-4 more. If I can find any that are at least a bit connected to.. something.
And is it just me or.. I haven't received information on what type of a CD should I send.

Not just you...I haven't heard either. If I don't hear soon, I'm going to just burn it as a music cd, and send it off,  since I think that would be the most universal form. I'm excited to get to work on my  "cover art" for this cd.

If the person who has me would like to use mp3 format, I've changed my mind. I mean - I've changed it such that either is fine. If you want to go with music - go for it. Or mp3 - whatever.

I've learned a lot from this project - there are a lot of really bad songs about Boston.

if the PM you sent doesn't say what kind of music they specifically don't like, does that mean they didn't say anything? because i'm REALLY hoping my partner's okay with folk/blue grass!

also, since this is my first CD swap, i'll repeat avizzius's question -

how many songs has everyone got? what's expected?

i only have 12. But that was genuinely because I didn't want to repeat the same bands (too often), and there's only so many songs that sound like my town.
Actually, there was one absolutely PERFECT gem of a song; but, would you believe, i couldn't get a copy ANYWHERE! Noone i knew had a cd (not even friends of the band!) and even the cd store sold out! Not that i really wanted to buy the EP just for a single song to burn. But that's how dire the situation was!

lupinbunny, you made me SOO glad. I have 13 songs and I spent the last hour running around my flat nervously thinking, "What to do, what to do, what more to put in that CD, oh my, oh my.". Phew. Glad that's over. Now I'll just burn the CD and..
BTW, I understand your situation completely. I also now a perfect song but.. *shy* I realised it only today and I can't seem to find it anywhere. Oh well.

I will check and send you a PM.

In general, for everybody, I did not copy out of The Spreadsheet what your partner said about preference (if anything substantive), but I did work pretty hard to match up people based on what they said.  Since you probably have similar general tastes to the person you are sending to (as much as I can tell, at least) you should just send whatever you think best represents your city, and chances are good they will like it.  Besides, doing these swaps is about expanding horizons!

That was a smart thing to do acesulfamek. I love hearing/getting new songs and music. I hope everyone had fun putting together their city groove tunes.

Oh and my playlist is 16 songs... just need to get that CD-R now  ::) I might take away or put on a few songs if I really feel like it. But eh. who knows

Yeah I think Im going to end up with about 12 or 14... whatever number it will be even cause I'm going for kinda a symmetry thing, a day and night in my town kinda thing, just cause when I was thinking of music that reminds me of my city, day and night have very different connotations

Title: Re: "sounds like home" secret music swap (sign-up closed; mail by 13 Aug)
Post by: peapod on August 12, 2005 11:48:05 AM
I think I ended up with 18 .... but I think I may have it a bit easier as I am covering the country I live in (The Netherlands) as I don't know any songs about my city. Anyone know any Gouda cheese songs????  (since I live in Gouda - the Dutch city of cheese :)

Even without any cheese songs, I hope the person receiving my CD will enjoy the CD.

when all is said and done I think I'll have between 14-20 songs depending on how "loosely" I decide to connect some of them ;)

Peapod...your request for cheese songs made me laugh...my dad is in a comedy group and they wrote a song once called "cheesy love song" and it was all these cliche lovey phrases with names of cheese worked into them...for example, one of the lines is "I gouda get you out of my heart."  Har har har! ;)

Post by: peapod on August 13, 2005 10:25:38 AM
Heehee, I bet the cheesy love song would be a riot to hear! The only cheese related songs I've ever heard were by non-Dutch bands so I couldn't include one on my CD, sadly. Couldn't find any in English about the "Coffee Shops" either :(

I have to confess... I am not off to a good start with my first swap. I will only be sending out on Monday as my husband had a small arguement with a computer this morning and the computer won ..... the computers victory resulted in my husband needing stiches! Long story short, by the time we got home from the "fun place to spend a Saturday morning"  the postoffice had already closed (it closes at noon here on Saturday).  Not sure with what or who I am more annoyed .. the computer or my husband! Grrrrrrr!

I'll send my already wrapped and ready to go box out on Monday to my swapee (is that a word????) priority express which will hopefully make up for the lost time.

grr, I feel so bad, I totally spaced and forgot the post office closes at noon on saturdays!  I got there at 2 and smacked myself in the face.  I threw a party today so I was getting ready for that all morning...grrrrr.  I'll get it out first thing on Monday, I swear it's all ready to go!  >:(

Oh, and just so my partner (whoever that person may be) knows...I gave my school address, but I won't be at school until tomorrow, so if you were a super early sender and are wondering if I got it, it may be at school waiting.  Probably not an issue, but I just thought I'd mention it.

I received from Ongir today and I am listening as I type. So far it's great and I'm on my way to post details in the gallery.

Sent, finally!! Sorry for being so late but a combination of Car accidents, computer crashes, and moving days all combined themselves in the exact weekend that this swap was supposed to be sent... but oh well it is done and on the way and I can't wait to see what everyone gets!!
