Title: Difference Makers Silent Auction March 31, 2017
Post by: underthemountain on January 07, 2017 02:32:43 PM

Hi all!

Difference Makers, a non-profit student run group that my daughter belongs to is hosting their second annual DM Silent Auction on March 31, 2017 6-9pm at Takoma Park Middle School in Silver Spring MD.  Most of you know about the club, but for those of you who don't I put some information at the end of this post.  :)

The auction was a huge success last year not only in terms of raising some much needed funds for our club, but also in terms of building community.  Much of the success of it was due to my generous Craftster friends who donated AMAZING items to our auction.  I wish all of you could have been there to hear all the comments.  Some people have never seen handmade items that look so professional and they were shocked to know that someone actually made it.   ;D  I'm hoping that some of you will join in again to help them!

Here are some photos from last year's event:
https://www.facebook.com/makeadifferencewithus/posts/1116636718380148

If anyone is willing to donate an auction item to Difference Makers please send it by March 17 if possible so that I can get the placards, space, everything else made in time.  Please include your name/company name, website, and business card (1 for each item since people may gift them and 1-2 extra for me to share with others that might have lost the bidding and would like to contact you).   I can also provide you with an acknowledgement letter that you can use for tax purposes if you itemize and give me an approximate value.  :)  The items will be put on display for 1 week during which time the students can bid on them and will end with a night event on March 31st where parents can come in and bid on the items.

Please send your items to the following address:
Difference Makers
Attn: Bryan Goehring/Craftsters Friends
9295 Maxwell Court
Laurel MD 20723

Please mark it Crafsters otherwise they might open it up and lose the contents and please PM me when you send to him so that I can ask Bryan to be on the lookout for it.  Thanks!   ;D

I have already received some wonderful items from my friends at the Canada meetup. THANK YOU for your continued kindness and support!!!
Rox

I will definitely be sending items again, too.  Can you let us know what types of items went over well last year?  I have a little more time this year than last year, so I'd like to put it to good use. ;D

Aw, thank you guys!  I am so grateful to have friends like you!!!

It sounds sexist, but the boys mainly bid on donated sport items (tickets, football, etc).  The crafted items were mainly snapped up by the girls/moms, though there was 1 boy who got a pendant as a present for his mom.  :)  Jewelry, scarves, plushes, sew items were a big hit.  I think focusing on things for middle school/teens/adults is probably best since very few small kids will be at this event.

THANK YOU!!!!!  Your support really means so much!

Can someone tell me the ages of middle school, please?

Haha, Lana is actually going to donate one of her shibori scarves.  I don't think my mom will part with any of her shibori.  She loves it too much!  Did I tell you guys that Lana entered one of hers in the county fair and won a ribbon for it?  :)

Hi Always!  Sport hats would be LOVED!!!  Ninnis are cute, maybe?  An apron would be cool. :)
The kids are 11-14 years old depending on their Bdays (6th-8th grade).  Lana is a 7th grader if that helps.

What are the popular sports teams down there?

Lana was very pleased.  Several of the people working there made nice comments on it too which really made her day.  :)  How did the workshop for your friends go?  BTW I think my screen is looking good so I should be screening the Canada tees soon.

Hmm, Redskins, Washington Nationals, Washington Wizards, Washington Capitals, DC United.  I'm in the middle of writing to all of them.  Last year about 1/5 of them donated an item to us.  I hope they will be able to help us this year.  Out of state teams won't donate to us.  They prefer to serve their state instead which makes sense.  :)

The site looks very professional!  Thanks for the linkity.

If you were to ever do one in the Fall or a Holiday one, I would be happy to contribute ornaments, cards, or tag sets - I go into mass production mode on those in the Fall.

Hi Onyx!  I organized an Arts & Crafts fair in September and some crafters told me that they love doing the ones around the holidays.  If I do move it I'll definitely let you know.  :)

We live in such a small world.  I found out that my little programmer is the son of a guy who works at the same place as John and I do.  Haha.

I'm still hitting it hard.  Got out 10 more donation requests yesterday.  Fingers and toes crossed.  :)

We were very fortunate that our ski club made a very large donation from their savings account.  Our school raised about 2K.  Next year we are going to do some public bake sales to fund this ourselves.  :)

I have some exciting news to share.  Yesterday at lunch I asked Bryan if I could run a DM Teen Ambassador's Program and he said YES!  He was going to do it, but he's been busy with getting his football team started.  It is going to be lots of fun.  I'm modelling it on the teen program at NIH which meets 5x a year, but maybe we'll meet once a month.  I'm hoping to recruit some of the 8th graders graduating from DM this year into this club.  I don't know if it will work, but I wanted to give it a try.  I am going to figure out a way to hand off the auction stuff to DM.  :)

Oh no Bea, I didn't mean it like that.  I would just like to get the kids involved in the auction.  It would be wonderful if they could send off the letters or do the online donation forms.  It will be fun for them to see the whole process and all the nice responses from the businesses/individuals out there.  :)  I would still do the overall organization.  It would be good for them to learn how to organize an event.  Last year Lana wrote all the thank yous.  This year Bryan has encouraged our little team of writers to do it.  I don't know if they'll be able to because they are also working on the newsletter, daily announcements, etc. :)

Woohoo!  Received an amazing box of goodies from BeaG all the way from Belgium.  I will be sharing a few photos of the wonderfulness soon.  :)

Oh, and I wanted to mention that I put a some of the leftover items from the last auction in the fair I did this past weekend and your donations raised $86 for DM!  :)  I was lucky this time to have 2 tables so I dedicated one of them to DM.  Thank you everyone for your kindness and generosity.  You guys are the best!!!

Prepare for picture overload...also note that I am only showing examples of what is in BeaG box of awesome.

photo of mongo box

top layer: keychains, necklaces, chap stick cozies, button rings.

closeups of cozies and felt keyrings

lower layers: bears, crocheted bags, covered notebook, button wreaths...

wait there's more
hearts, crocheted eggs (oops forgot the egg hats), mirror, and lots of cards!  :)

And mind you I'm only showing samples of all the awesome.

Bea, thank you again for your amazing donations!   The kids are really going to have fun with the smaller items you sent and I'm sure your larger pieces will do well in the auction.  DM is lucky to have a friend like you!!!  So am I!

And thank you to all the rest of you for crafting for us!  :)

I'm hoping to squeeze in some crafting for the auction as soon as I can.  I already have some jewelry pieces done, but I am hoping to make a scarf or two.  Lana is going to put one of her shibori scarves in the auction.  :)

I love the way you tagged everything.  It looks really professional and makes it perfect for gift giving!

In a couple of weeks I'll be working on finishing up the flyers, placards, etc.  I'm waiting a bit on the flyers because some companies don't tell you ahead of time that they are donating so things show up and then they aren't included.

If any of you are still planning on sending me goodies please drop me a line.  :)

Thank you CLM!  :)  This auction is a way for us to both build community as well as to raise funds for DM projects.  Bryan and I have been working on developing a project to feed hungry children in middle school.  There are good programs in place for elementary aged kids, but not the same type of support for middle schoolers, especially on the weekends.  It is still in the planning stages, but we are meeting with a grocery store next week to see about a possible partnership. Lana also applied for a small grant, but her focus is on providing fresh vegetables/vitamins to 0-5 year olds in need.

FUN UPDATE!
In asking for auction donations I came across a flyer for Wegmans and found out that they donate their almost out of date produce.  I got in touch with the manager and Bryan and I met with them yesterday to see if they would be willing to help us.  Guess what?  They are!  So in a couple of weeks we will be getting foodstuffs to distribute to the needy middle schoolers.  The elementary school aged kids and seniors are already covered by other organizations such as Manna and Meals on Wheels. We are targeting middle schoolers and children 0-5 years old. The Farmer's Market has a free spot for non-profits so we're going to distribute food there!  We are now planning on purchasing a trailer to haul the food as there is alot of it.  The trailer will also be used for many of our other projects.  We are hoping to pay for most of it with auction monies and will also solicit donations (maybe gofundme again).

I'll be PMing you this morning to see when you'll be sending in your donations.  No, worries if you can't send this time.  I just need to start organizing it all.  Thanks!  :)

Happy Crafting!
Rox

YES!  It is a shame that we can't take it all and distribute it.  And this is only 1 store.  :(
So excited, but now the hard part comes...the logistics of doing it all.  We are hoping to get more adults involved so that we don't burn out.

That is so great!

Yay!  Thanks so much LovelyMiss!   ;D

P.S. The poster is coming along really nicely now.  I redesigned it last night and Lana approves.  :)  Hopefully I'll be able to share it with you all at the beginning of next week.  :)

There was recently a news program about food waste at some of the big grocery stores - Walmart was one of the big culprits.  Instead of donating to local food banks or Second Harvest like programs, or even selling it at cheaper prices, they were found to be throwing out perfectly good food - including unexpired packaged goods. Apparently one excuse was to make room for new products to sell. There are so many food programs to help those in need that could use those goods, I just can't fathom why they would do that.  I am glad some retailers at least are considering other more ethical options.

I have a lot of faith in your abilities and determination - but you are right, you take on a lot and it would be great to get more adults involved.  It would also help set a stronger example, and build that sense of community involvement for the kids also!

Unfortunately some companies won't take the time to do it because time is money and having to schedule pickups for organizations to come in, weighing donations, etc. means that their employees are doing something that doesn't contribute to $, not to mention what to do when the people picking up don't show up.  It's nice now that some companies realize that there is an advertising benefit to them if they engage in this kind of activity so at least there is some compensation for them.  :)

It's hard to have a full-time job and keep up with all this stuff.  Our main focus atm is to get the food out so we are focusing on getting a trailer and a refrigerator.  I'm hoping the auction will do well and I'm trying to get the flyers out beyond the local community, but it is hard to entice people to come to this event.  We are also trying to get our website/advertising to look more professional.  I have a friend who is donating the printing to us, but she's going on maternity leave soon so that might be a hold up. For now we are using b/w xeroxes that are free since DM is also a school program. The reality is that if Bryan really wants the organization to grow he is going to have to expand the staff which means getting a big grant so that he can hire a few people (professional fundraiser, graphic artist, web designer, etc).  ATM all we have are a few students doing the website and me. I'm sitting down with them on Thurs to see if I can't undo some of the odd changes they've made...too many chefs and all that.  LOL.

Wow, that's so much work, utm!  You are all so dedicated.  One of the most helpful things that we did at a few of the nonprofits where I worked was recruit board members who could help manage events and contribute to the organization.  Being a "board member" is apparently like a status-symbol or something for some people.  A few of the most helpful people were from the local banking world, retired business people, and professors.  We realized it is a lot more effective to ask people who do not already have super full plates, but instead are maybe looking to add something else to their resume or bios/profiles, or "advance" or promote themselves in some way.  It's all in how you sell it and spin it...what can they get out of it?  It's hard to even think in those terms sometimes when everyone already in the organization is so self-less, and doing the work because it's right and feels good, not for personal gain.  That was just my experience, not sure how DM is organized, or if there is already board involvement.  :)  Just a random thought when I was reading your post.  I'm sending lots of good thoughts DM's way, and hope it's an awesomely successful event!

Hi LovelyMiss!

Having a strong board is definitely an asset.  I am such a newbie that I didn't find out until recently that board members are supposed to help fundraise.  Because this is a kids club Bryan has chosen past presidents (9-12th graders, 2 college kids) to be on the board along with 3 adults. The kids have enthusiasm and great ideas, but they don't understand how to fundraise well.  Unfortunately the 2 adults both with nonprofit experience are not that invested in DM and don't come to our board meetings.  So that leaves me.  Thank goodness I have John's support.  He never lets me down. :)  I think as our club grows Bryan will come around to seeing that we need some real board members or maybe just bigger grants.  He is busy focusing on our food project and I'll continue to focus on the money part.  So far we've been able to get by.  We really need this auction to be a success.

Rox

Here is what I sent.  The package is supposed to be there on Monday, utm.

Two necklaces, two tissue holders, three coin/card purses, and one coffee cup cozy.

And then four notebook covers with composition books included.

I hope you get lots more donations!  Do you bundle items so that they might go for more at the auction?  That was something we did at some of our events that seemed helped boost the going prices a little...like bundle a handmade item with a gift card, or bundle a few bath/beauty products together and call it a spa set or something.  Just another thought!

Good luck, again!

Lovelymiss, how awesome are those card holders? What a great way to feature interesting fabrics.

I've been wishing I had some things to donate to this and I do in fact have tissue cosies that were at a friend's store and returned to me now she's closing up shop. Not tons of them but a few, would you like them? Easy to ship too since they are flat :).

Wow, great goodies LovelyMiss!!!  Love the jewelry pieces!!  I am in love with the notebooks too, esp the Mario one and I don't even know how to play the video game.  :)  I'm sure the kids will love it.  Thank you!

I've never tried putting together a basket for this.  I've done them for raffles and they do well.  I'll see what Bryan thinks.  He asked the officers to put together a basket or two together and no one has done anything yet so I'm not sure if it means that it doesn't appeal to MS kids or that they didn't get to it yet.

Hi CLM!  Yay thanks!  I'm sure the cozies would be loved.  :)  Every bit helps!  Thank you!!!

Thanks everyone for all your generous donations and well wishes.  Your friendship and support means so much to me.  :)

Ok, I'll send them off right away :).
One awesome thing w baskets is they can be raffled off. Sometimes a few cool prizes brings in more money than selling the items singly. I also can't resist a 50-50 draw, those are a win-win!

Unfortunately anything that is like gambling is not allowed...so no raffles, no 50-50.  They are fun and would bring alot of excitement, but those are the school rules.  But I do them at the club fundraisers.  :)

The flyer/poster is coming along nicely.  I will wrap it up mid-week and start distributing the flyers soon.  Hopefully I can get the kids to take them to be posted in the various stores.  :)

I've been told that about 50/50 before, it's so lame, lol.

I sent my little contribution, fingers crossed it arrives in good time. XO you earth-angels :).

Hi!!!  Craziness abounds, but it is coming along nicely.  Working on the placards and the flyer keeps evolving as more people/businesses donate.  :)  The kids are busy writing thank you cards.

I think this year's auction is going to be bigger and better than last years!

Thanks to all of you for your wonderful donations and support!!!!!

I remember your beautiful displays Bea.  I don't know if we have time to make anything atm.  The kids are helping SGA with their events as well and we've been up to other mischief as well.  Bryan decided it was too expensive to have the van professionally painted so he and some of the kids are painting it with chalkboard paint.  The kids are also hard at work on their thank you cards for the DM auction in addition to their other projects (recycling, room cleaning, Vet card making, etc.)  :)

Just wanted to share that our partnership with Wegmans is a go!  I signed papers on Saturday and our first food distribution to the needy in Takoma Park/Silver Spring MD will be on April 8th!

We also purchased this to do the deliveries.

You can read more about it here as well as see our GoFundMe page.  :)
https://www.facebook.com/makeadifferencewithus/

We also need to get coolers and a portable refrigerator for the perishable items and bins to transport the food.

The auction will definitely help pay for these items.  Thanks so much all for your continued support!!!

Thank you Bea and Always!!!!

We are truly grateful for your support!!!  I was working on the prebidding list today and you guys have donated so many, many fun and wonderful things.  Thank you!!!! :)  This is not only going to make money for DM, but will help build community at our school and in our community.  :)

Thank you for your kind donation towards our trailer purchase Always.  Lana is going to be making a donation of $100 to DM on Monday from her recent button sales to Flower Valley ES that she made with your button machine!  Your gift goes on and on!  :) You can see them here:
https://www.facebook.com/thesmallthingsmatter/

The Wegmans folks have been so wonderful!  They partner with Manna during the weekdays, but on the weekends all this food goes to waste.  If things go well we hope to reach out to the other Wegmans.  I still need to research if the other grocery stores have found groups to take their food on the weekends.  So much to do...I really need to learn about food and try to find ways to save more of it.

:) Rox

Hi all!

This Friday we had our STEAM/DM Auction.  All the handmade goodies were loved as usual!

The knit/crocheted items were a big hit this time around.  The sewn stuff not so much.  I don't know if there is any rhyme or reason to it all. The handmade cards were a big hit too.  The jewelry which usually does really well didn't this time around.  Oh well.  The great thing about all these goodies is that I can store them for the next event!  :)

But here is the exciting news....we made over 5K!  :)  It couldn't have come at a better time since we are gearing up for the food distribution!!!  And I fear that our van (old) is on its last legs.  It is over 16 years old and from the rewiring Bryan discovered he thinks that it was used to power and haul a trailer.  Today it wouldn't start and he ended up having to rent a vehicle to take them to their convention site visit.  This isn't the first time that this has happened. I am hoping that he'll consider getting another van soon.

Here is Lana getting set up to make buttons.  I didn't get a good action shot, but you can see Always' machine and some of her preprinted button offerings.  They do well, but the kids really enjoy creating their own images.

We are now gearing up for Global Youth Service Day on April 22.  I'll share Lana's button design for that once it comes together.  :)

Thanks again to all of you for helping us!  You all have truly made a difference.
Rox

Wow - you guys did great - I did not realize that it passed already!  Too bad the jewelry did not do as well this time around, but it sounds like you had a good variety of things.

If there is a plan for one later in the year - maybe pre-Christmas, and I get enough notice - I could contribute some handmade ornaments.

Sounds like everyone had a great time raising funds!  What a fabulous experience for all involved...BTW, I got a lovely email from Brian...I just know the food truck will be used for good purposes!

I think I will start a basket of miscellaneous items for charity work...you are so right, Rox...there is no rhyme or reason why some thing sell some of the times and not others...with most craft fairs, you have to sort of have a mix of everything at all times!!!

Yay!  Glad it raised so much money and it will be going to such good use!  Sounds like you'll have a good stock pile of extra handmade items for other random sale opportunities throughout the year, too!  Go you, and go DM!  :)

Thanks all!!!  BTW our food distribution starts this weekend!

Bryan let me name our food program Kokua Foods.  Kokua is a Hawaiian word, that translates as "extending loving, sacrificial help to others for their benefit, not for personal gain..." and I thought this was a nice way to explain what we are trying to do, show kokua.  :)

So excited to see how it will all work out. I'm going to try to take some photos and hopefully some video as well and will share it so that you can all come along on this exciting journey.

Thank you all again for your wonderful support!  :)

Rox

Gah, the school threw in a wrench yesterday so Bryan has decided to postpone it until May 7.  It's ok because we can use the time, but the kids are off on Spring Break next week so those that are in need of food support would really have benefited from this program.  :(

Hi Bea!  I don't know if I told you, but the other officers asked Lana to plan this event since they were busy planning for their convention.  I was really proud of Lana and all the kids.  They are great!

Hi Kathy: Most definitely!! The auction is their best fundraiser as well as being a community building event.  :)    I am also going to plan another craft fair...maybe a holiday themed one??

Thanks you guys for crafting your buns off for us!  :)

This coming weekend is our convention.  The kids have been working really hard on planning all the events.  I can't wait to see what they've come up with.  They'll be doing a few more service activities at the convention too.

Ditto! Nice going, Lana!

Will start on some more crafts for DM as soon as I finish the Geezer projects for Annchen, the HP quilt block for CLM, and the 75 bookmarks for the children's hospital (just need to satin stitch the edges). And come up with some craft projects for an unspecified number of people to make during OHCE Week (Home Extension). Then there are all those pesky WIPs to deal with (child-size crocheted afghan, crib sheets for darling g-daughter, doll clothes for 7 great-great-nieces, and a few dozen quilts, to name a few). I'm definitely an ADD crafter - great at starting things, but easily distracted by new projects.  ;D

Thanks all!  I helped get the educational and food vendors for Lana, but she was the one that contacted all the non-profits and planned all the community service activities.  There was another officer that was supposed to work with her on GYSD, but that girl decided that she wanted to plan a fundraiser with her friends for Ethiopia so everything fell on Lana.  It was stressful for her.  She cried a couple of times out of frustration, but overall I think it was a good learning experience for her.

Gah, you are a crafting machine Kathy.  I haven't done anything crafty in a long time which is bad since I have a craft fair coming up.  LOL.  It is my first time trying Arbutus Art Fest http://arbutusartsfestival.com/   They are letting Lana run her button machine to fundraise for DM!  :)

I was tickled to see a shot of the button machine in one of the clips!  I swear, it was meant to be!  You guys made my day!  Lana is one of the best things that ever happened to this Craftster family!

Hi Friends!

Just wanted to share a very wonderful happy with you.

Mix 107.3 (popular local radio station) is hosting a 107 Days of Kindness Campaign and they have selected Difference Makers Kokua Foods Program to be featured on October 29.

Hopefully this will bring awareness to the plight of many hungry children right in our own backyard as well as encourage other business to donate their unwanted food to those in need.

Hi Friends!

I just wanted to share some very, very exciting news.  Lana and I made her club Small Things Matter into a 501(3)c nonprofit.  We just got our determination letter from the IRS on Saturday so now we're official!

Our mission is to encourage kids of all ages to use their crafty talents to make items for those in need.  We have been making stuffies at various places such as KID Museum.  Our next event will be at Winterfest on Dec 16 and the Silver Spring Timebank for MLK day.

We are thinking of ways to encourage others to join us, plus pay for the materials.  One thing we're doing is charity parties where we'll come and lead a crafting event with a suggested donation of $5/person and then the items are donated to a charity of their choice.  We did 1 of these so far.  We will probably sell lemonade/shave ice during the summer at the charity corner to raise funds.

We are also encouraging people to be partners with us which means leading and completing some sort of crafty activity.  I received a wonderful package of 75 wish bracelets from the Secret Santa swap and I will be adding this Craftster to our partner list.  I hope some of you will join in too!  Lana has a friend in Difference Makers that is going to try to get her girl scout troop to make stuffies.  They can't make the minimum 50 that is required for donation so we'll add some of ours from other events to theirs so that they can make a donation somewhere.

Anyhow this is just in its infancy so we really don't know where it will go.  Lana is thinking she might also get a bunch of her friends together to start tutoring kids.  She is currently tutoring a 2nd grader and loves it.  She also takes care of the little kids at our food distribution at the elementary school and has been reading to them.  Maybe she could do a bit more of that with her friends.

Our motto is Educating Children, Building Communities, Perpetuating Kindness so there is a lot of room to grow into.

We'd love to have your input and ideas.  Thanks!!

Like us on Facebook if you have an account.

Take care!
Roxanne
