Details of swap:

*** Disclaimer - I will do my best to partner people up according to themes but shipping requirements, allergies and number of participants may make it difficult to come up with perfect partnering!

- This swap is for mini junk journals, You will make your partner a junk journal that is a minimum of 4"x6" with a front cover, 20 sheets (that would be 20 fronts, 20 backs, so if you numbered them with page numbers they would number 1-40), and then a back cover.
- Half the sheets should be embellished. This could be stamped, or with ribbon/lace, pockets, tags, brads, hanging bookmarks, borders, etc.
- The other half do not need to be embellished but would need to be some sort of decorative or otherwise designed paper (not just plain printing paper), Examples of things you can use: old calendar pages/images, magazine pages, junk mail envelopes, paint chips, paper bags, book pages, playing cards, greeting cards, yellow mailing envelopes, ziploc baggies, postcards or pasteboard packaging that have been gessoed/painted over, gelli printed pages, and other interesting but not bought (i.e. scrapbook) items. (you CAN use scrapbook type items but it is NOT required)
- Then bind it in some way. The simplest is punching holes and just using O rings and you can decorate them with ribbons and such so they don't look so plain. But you could do any sort of binding you like.

This swap is just for the book with pages. You would not do any actual journaling in it. The recipient would use if for their own purposes.

A video tutorial series
steps 1 - 3 are mostly about cutting paper and gathering materials. She uses a lot of store-bought, pre-made stuff. That is not necessary. junk journals can be made out of, well junk Smiley I would check other sites out for types of ephemera other people use. Probably you could skip steps 1-3 and still have a good idea what she did.
step 1 - about cutting paper and covers
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f84PHdXlXlY (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f84PHdXlXlY)
step 2 - about gathering embellishments. she does mostly/exclusively flat decorated journals, but you don't have to be limited to flat items.

step 3 - gathering inks and stamps to use

step 4 - starting to put it all together - flips through her pages and shows where she inked/stamped, added pockets, dictionary pages, etc.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_iUflsbZ_xo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_iUflsbZ_xo)
step 5 - final step on putting it together - adding final embellishments and binding. again she keeps it fairly flat. she binds with 0 rings. and shows how to fancy up the look of the orings

binding tutorial
You can use any binding you want. The easiest appears to be punching holes and using 0-rings. Here is a link for coptic stitch. This is where you would have to make "signatures", basically you'd make long pages and fold them in half and then sew them together.

This is on my "thinkin' about it" list. I have a lot of stuff to do this summer and don't want to over-commit, but I really could use a good destashing project like this. And my old art journal is feeling a bit old and blah lately ;)

Would it be helpful to anyone to push signups out another week and then have a 5 week crafting period instead of 4 week?

So signups would be until 6/27 and then send outs would be 8/3?

I am going to think on this. I am supposed to be on a self imposed swap moratorium, until the Craftster meet up and a couple of weddings are over, but this is too too too tempting.

i just signed up. I haven't done this kind of swap, but I have made several mini albums for family & friends, which were like mini Journals. So I Love doing these kinds of Journals. This will be so fun. Yes, a longer sign up & crafting time sounds great to me too. Have to finish a swap before I can start on this one. But almost done with it. ;)

Sounds interesting. I love journaling! I am learning to make journals this summer, and organizing my craft room/office so this will be good practice with me, and will help me use up my craft supplies.

I am going to start my swap box tonight - I take a shoe box and as I clean/organize my desk, I will toss in the papers that I think will be used for this project. It's my way of gathering supplies for a swap.

I have to finish 5 small books tonight as a gift for someone and anything that doesn't make it into those books will be added to the swap box.

Happy scavenging everyone!

I cam across a box of paper supplies in my craft room I had forgotten about and it was full of stuff that will be good to use in a junk journal. I've been eyeballing all the junk mail that comes my way also trying ot figure out if it would make a good page or not.

Also, a couple friends and I are going to play with faux-gelli plates tomorrow so that will probably result in some good pages for journal also.

For those who have made junk journals before, what do you use to make the covers? Sturdy decorated cardboard? buy chipboard? Some other material? I've hear of people using 9"x12" envelopes to make the cover but I wouldn't think that would be very sturdy but maybe it doesn't need to be.

Lucky! I have been wondering about those.

I have been using reused materials for covers. Sometimes I redecorate sketchbook covers when making a decorated sketchbook.

But I have made little notebooks with 3x5 file cards and when making covers for those, I have been using sturdy cardboard packaging, like cereal boxes and the like, or reusing old hard cover books. Even thin cardboard, if you are collaging a lot of layers with glues, mod podge, or gel mediums, or using texture pastes, etc, that will add to the sturdiness of the covers too - just allow for lots of drying time so the covers cure well and are no longer tacky.

Lucky! I have been wondering about those.

It was a little bit of an impulse request (it was going to be an impulse buy, but my husband needed present ideas and bought it instead... and then withheld it from me because it wasn't my birthday yet). I'm looking forward to playing around with it, but have only gotten to take it out of the box and still need wires for binding. It helps that I have a craft group in town that are happy to share craft toys also - doesn't feel as wasteful when other people get some usage out of oddly specific tools.

I've used chipboard, mat board, sturdy pasteboard, the backs of notepads (which I believe is chipboard), illustration board (I keep my scrap piece). You can buy bookboard too. If you're going for a softbound, then a 9"x12" envelope or cereal box pasteboard would probably work well for that. I don't really like cardboard for book covers though. I don't think it looks as nice as the other options and I don't think its as sturdy either.

If you're worried about the envelope being too thin, what about gluing two together and make a thicker envie? I would use a good glue that can handle some abuse so the cover wouldn't fall apart. PVA glue is what is recommended a lot for bookbinding. I think a white school glue would work too. YES! paste is really good too. You could do this glue together method with other things like cardstock (maybe 2 - 4 pieces thick?) or posterboard. But this is a junk journal. What about gathering enough larger size cardstock political postcards/card ads/etc and glue them together until thick enough, trim and paint? :) You could also build up layers of paper mache.

I've re-used book covers, chipboard, stiff cardboard covered with fabric. My art journal is a re-purposed book. I tore out many of the pages and gessoed over most of the remaining ones. Layering definitely makes both pages and whatever is used as covers stiffer and more durable.

I was annoyed when I unrolled a piece of art canvas I bought at a local art store tent sale. It was prepped canvas and I was hoping for unprepped... except now I think I may be able to use it for some pages or covers for this journal!

Hooray for happy solutions Oxynox!! ;D

all the journal covers I've been using up until now were made from this weird hard plasticy material my mom gave me and my husband cut down to size at work. Now that they're all gone, I dunno what to use =/ I'll have to get creative and comb the thread for ideas ;D

EXCITED!!!

If we end up with an off number of people is there anyone who would want to take on 2 partners?

I have a huge stash of ephemera that mostly was gifted to me that I need to bust through. It's really nice stuff that I mostly probably wouldn't have bought on my own. I'm hoping to use up as much of the pretty things as possible and let go of a ton of it. I already have some thought on the construction of my journal for Onyxnox, but haven't dug out my supplies. I'll probably start over the weekend.

I cannot find ___________ which I think would make the perfect cover for this journal! Grrrrrrrr! I hope I don't end up tearing my home apart before I find it! And I really hope that it actually is as I remember it. It would suck to actually find it only for it to end up not like my recollection at all.

Meanwhile, I'm working on some pages.

I am sad to say that looking for items for the journal has forced me to acknowledge that my craft room should be labeled a disaster zone - things have piled up to the point where trying to find something is causing mini avalanches.

I think I may put a stop swap order on myself after this swap again to clean it up... it is really shameful!

I have been slowly trying to organize my craft room for a while. It's a never ending battle. I have plenty of shelf space ( I bought 2 sets of industrial shelving to line the wall when I moved in but I don't have enough table space and the room isn't large enough for more table space.

I was cleaning out my bins of odd and ends and doodads. I have a bad habit of buying stuff when I know I have it and can't find it. I have about 5 lifetime supplies of googly eyes. And 5 tape measures :o

I've been sorting through my papers and ephemera making piles for junk journals. I'm making several at once. for this swap, one for me, one for a personal swap. I thought it might go faster to do them all at once.

I've had a very productive weekend so far. Many pages done and a definite plan is in place! Now to pull it all together. (And to clean up the gigantic mess of papers, glue, paint, gesso and bits and pieces!).
I was watching The Lost Boys while crafting away. I wonder how much of that atmosphere seeped through. 😀 I hope my partner likes that movie! I was pleased to find it holds up over all these years.

So I am super new to the whole junk journal think apparently. I was wondering what everyone is applying gesso to. I thought everything was supposed to be a mix of junk and decorative papers that you wouldn't want to cover up, so I didn't put gesso on any of the pages I've done so far. And I didn't think any of the example blogs, videos, or instructions links from geekgirl had pages that looked like gesso was applied. Can someone fill me in on this? Sorry for such newbie questions... If you don't want to spoil surprises for your partner in the thread, feel free to drop me a PM to talk about it.

A wash of gesso can be used on surfaces that are too slick to give something to give grip to, to make more of a drawing/writing surface - you can thin the gesso out so that some of the images show through, or to mute some images. It can also be used to prep fabric surfaces for decorating too, or give a bit of body and stiffness for delicate surfaces. Or hide images you don't want to show.

Some people, like myself, may also be decorating some of their surfaces too - I have not used gesso as yet, but I have some gessoed art canvas which I may include as pages - as I bought a roll of canvas at a tent sale, but thought it was raw canvas, not prepped. But I likely will be adding some inking, stampings, collaged elements, or whatnot to several of the pages.

Might be different based on what the journal will be used for, too. After chatting with my partner, I'm gessoing so there are obvious spaces to art and write on the junk.

I have gesso several thin pages together then it makes it thicker & then you can paint, glue things on add fabrics & laces etc. on. It's just a little easier to add things too. At least that's what I do.

A wash of white acrylic paint or gesso to mute out the images is what I was thinking too. Gesso is also used to make the surface more grippy. Since its a junk journal, I think you might still want to see some of the original 'junk' images showing through, but it would be hard to journal or do art over some sorts of junk papers like those larger glossy advertising postcards without any sort of surface prep.

Here's a tutorial on gessoing over things for a composition notebook. She takes hers to fully white pages, which you might not want to do for a junk journal, but it might help to see her tutorial. :)

Great idea to use the gesso to make thicker pieces.

I am done two covers and about 6 two sided pages - though I may add some more colour and decoration. I have added lots of pockets and bit so far so things can be added by my partner.

So far, my journal is bigger than I thought, but I wanted more space to work in too.

I ordered gesso on Prime Now and just started sparingly adding gesso. I not sure about how much I used. (I would have gone to the store, but spent 2 hours yesterday going into Cary to go to Michael's for a thing that they apparently didn't have, so then I went to Target and found some, but by then I had wandered about both stores aimlessly finding things I didn't need, and I really didn't want to go back out again today after shopping for cookout stuff for tomorrow...)

I'm glad I'm not the only person spending my Sunday working on stuff. I just had a fun Gelli print party but I'm not sure if any of the pages will make the cut. My fingers are paint-y so it was a good afternoon.

As for gesso - I wasn't planning to gesso anything - I was going to leave that up to my partner. I figure she can add or subtract any papers/designs/colors she doesn't like with her own gesso. I also love the clear gesso - it seems to have more sand/grit in it and I love the way it feels.

Happy crafting everyone and Happy 4th!

I ended up just buying large bottles of it. I use it as part of a recipe for homemade texture paste, (http://onyxnox.blogspot.ca/2014/02/homemade-texture-paste-versus-store.html) which is fantastic to use for textural pieces, and dries to a wonderful plaster-like finish. I didn't use it for this, but it makes for a nice way to redecorate hard covered books/sketchbooks.

I am almost done - I have done pages with pockets, tags, and whatnot, so my book is getting a bit bulky.

My first attempt wouldn't shut ::) I am trying to back off on 3D embellishments and the bulkiness of ribbons on my tags for the second attempt.

The journal I made is bursting at the seams. It doesn't lie flat but I think it contributes to the junky feel of it :). What's silly is that I originally redid the cover to have a smaller spine so it didn't look so empty!! I should have stuck with plan A. Oh well! It's sent off now!! I hope geekgirl likes it :).

Mine technically shuts :)

If you squish it down.

But if you use the pockets and envelopes - well, "shut" becomes more of a concept, than an actuality.

Hehehe. I will keep this in mind as I repack the pages of my second attempt :) (Fuller means more fun, right?)

I spent a happy half-hour yesterday cutting pages. I know, I know - could rip or tear. But it's fun to have straight edges, too!
I have done a little painting but want to add some ________ . Hope to send by the end of the week or early next week.

Okay, quoting myself but I am changing book structure and page ideas totally so will keep first set for me. I found some great stuff at school today to start book #2. I asked a few of my more adventurous Pre-K kids to paint some pages, which they happily did because they love the names on the DecoArt paints - Tutti Frutti and Wild Green!

New direction and happy to have the time to do so.

We have a gallery!
I have posted pictures. I know it's unreasonable to expect pictures of every page from everyone's journals (although I would LOVE to see them all!), but if oyu could at least post a picture of the cover and then maybe 5 of your most interesting/favorite pictures. Or if you can do collages.

I received from Geekgirl and posted a video of a flip thru. I hope it shows ok.

And I also started hers! lol and put in a hidden pocket that i kind of stumbled across. the whole idea came from one of those campaign mailers we got recently that I tore in half and put into my junk journal box.

it's about 8-1/2" tall but I have a fun idea for utilizing that height. ok thats all im gonna tell you, back to working on it!

Used my Big Bite for the first time and I'm in love - so easy to set the grommets. Now I can sell/donate the weird one I bought from the hardware store a year ago that made all my grommets crooked and wonky.

I'm still adding the little bits and pieces - I don't want to go overboard but I don't want it to be too plain, either.
I need an "Enough-is-Enough-meter".

i have been stockpiling "junk" envelopes I've received and emptied of their treasures, even labels off ketchup bottles last nite at work, it was sooo hot at work, in the air conditioned dining room, the labels were sweating off the ketchup so I got 2 sets, bags from fast food places we go to, stickers, candy boxes to use to firm up the spine, parts of packagings.

When I am done with mine for geekgirl, I will make a video of it as well. gonna work on pages today as the cover and spine are done but not finished being decorated.

I won't be getting to the Post Office until Monday. I had a crafting marathon a couple weeks ago to finish a present, then was out of town for four days, and now I'm rushing to finish up decorations for a baby shower this weekend. I keep feeling bad for the finished junk journal that has just been chilling for a couple weeks waiting for a new home :P

Let it chill - it's not like it's due yet :)

I did ship mine - and I am so happy. The new service that Roving Anarchist recommended to me cost less than half of what it would have cost through Canada Post - so happy!!! Also, their site says they may get it there within a week so you may get it by the end of next week!

So, mine has morphed into more of an art journal than a "junk" journal.

I sent this message to my partner and I thought I'd share it with all of you too:

This project really made me explore myself and my art and my perceptions of the word 'junk." It was really trying for me. I used a lot of upcycled things in my journal but to me that isn't "junk" and I have a really hard time seeing anything re-purposed as junk...

I do love the journal I made and I'm very proud of it, it was just really hard for me. I think I had higher expectations of my abilities and I bit off more than I could chew. But, in the end, I'm happy with it and I really think IsikkahJai will be too!
