Do you love making Teesha Moore-style patches? Have you always admired them but haven't yet caught the TM bug? Well, this could be the swap for you!

In this round of the TM Patch Swap, you will be crafting for 1 or 2 partners (first time swappers will be limited to 1 partner) and from 1-3 patches (you and your partner should agree on the exact number).

Also, you will have the option of exchanging a TM Patch Supply kit with your partner (contents of kit may include: floss, fabric, embellishments {buttons, beads, ribbons, charms, etc}, poly-fil, etc.).

Let's keep this swap simple and limit it to the sending of patches and kits (if you love sending extra things, consider adding those in to a kit  ).

There are lots of inspirational patches from previous swaps, so check out some of the galleries here:

I just sent my questionnaire in! Send-outs are at the end of a very busy week for me, so my goal is to finish the week before. I'm chaperoning the 8th grade trip to Washington DC (4 days) and then the day after we get back, I'm chaperoning a trip to see the Red Sox in Boston. If I don't finish before I leave, I'll have many hours on a bus...

ooooh you'll be right down the road from me craftADDchick!  D.C. is a lot of fun and a crazy amount of walking!  I'm guessing ya'll will be hitting the Air/Space museum and trolling the mall, huh?  Send-outs will be a crazy time for me too, we will be either prepping to head out or already in Texas, so I'll have to jump right on in it when sign-ups close  :D

I know the Air & Space Museum is on the agenda, and I know they cram a lot into the 4 days. It'll be an exhausting week! But, everyone says it's a fun week. I just hope it's not too hot!

And, I'm excited for this round! Who wants to make me some science patches?! :D

I am wavering? Like on one hand I made TM ornaments for the last sweat shoppe ornament swap, and that was great fun. But on the other hand I only just made my first embroidery hoop and my skills there are still pretty weak. I don't want my partners to be bummed out that they got a crappy patch.

Awwww, I had that same fear, but trust, patches are impossible to gunk up!  I'm horrible at embroidery, so I like to do stenciling, stamping and machine embroidery instead...and then hand stitch the lil popcorn stitches, I can do the popcorn stitches lol.  There are so many different ways to do these patches, check out the galleries for some inspiration :)

I've been waiting for this swap! I've never made these but want to so badly. I've watched/pinned all the info I can find on them but I am still a little leery. Thankfully we've been given enough time to sign-up that I am going to make a few and see how it goes first.  ;D

This will be my first time in this swap, and I'm so excited to get going! The galleries from the other rounds are totally inspiring. I've never made TM patches before, and this looks like a good chance to work on my embroidery skills. Hoops always seem so intimidating because there's so much room to work in. A patch feels more forgiving because it's not going to end up on someone's wall.

They are so much fun! You can make it anyway you want! Everyone has or will get their own style & that's what is so fun about it!
So the people who haven't made one yet, you will love them!  You can't make just one! So come on in & join with all of us! We'll have so much fun!!!!

i agree with the anxiety, but the imperfections are what make them fun and personal. the small size helps too, i can relax and try something new without a big commitment. the last tm swap was my first and , and i went on and made more of my own, but i still don't have enough for my totebag yet so i'm in! i've ended up with 2 diffrent color schemes, so i may have to just make 2 tote bags. :)

I agree with all of the above :)  For my first few patch swaps I would get so stressed...but it finally sunk in that there's no wrong or right way to make these suckers and now I just go with what I'm inspired by and try not to think to long and hard on it.  I really enjoy making them now that I've just let it all go.  I love all the different techniques and styles and they all look so cool together...the mix of large and small, frayed and pressed under, embroidered/painted/stamped/embellished....I just love 'em all  ;D  Don't be skeered!

I agree with all of the above, even the nervousness! I had never made a patch until the first round of the swap, and I made a rather wonky patch. But, I love coming up with ideas for my partners and figuring out ways to make them happen. And, when all of the different patch styles are grouped together, they all look amazing! So, dive right in!!

ETA: And, every patch I have received has provided me with inspiration for new techniques to try (I might even give free-motion embroidery a go one of these days :D ).

Now that I just located the little pouch of sewing machine feet, I think I could actually try some free motion quilting (and maybe make a more visible pouch for my sewing machine attachments :) ).

Or, maybe I'll make myself a science-themed patch... I have an idea that would be well suited to it, I think!

10 days left to signup  :D.  I might be a little quiet this week...today's my daughters 9th birthday so we have dinner and present time tonight, and then pulling together everything for her party this weekend.  Busy busy!  It's finally feeling like summer on the east coast.  I had to actually take off my hoodie today (I might be the only one who is sad to see the cold weather go around here).   Anyone else have fun plans for the weekend?

My bf's oldest turned 9 this weekend! We pulled out the chocolate fountain instead of cake, went down to the beach (we live within walking distance), and had pizza for dinner. A good time was had by all! Next weekend should be quiet...I think. It *is* Mother's Day.

My plans for the weekend (once I make it through the week :P ) will include a convention (for my union) in Boston (starts Friday), and then on Sunday, I know I'll be scrambling to get my progress report grades finished. Tonight, I need to tackle laundry and dishes... Multiple loads of each!

Yay, I just finished my remaining assignments for the spring semester! Now I am taking a relaxing/crafting break (first stop: Craftster!) before diving into additional work.

In the course of the research I was finishing for school, I found information I needed for a craftADDchick science patch I've been wanting to make.  :D So I might start up that patch tonight (I'm sending it whether or not we get paired up!  ;)).

This upcoming weekend I'm going to visit a friend in L.A. for some long overdue girls-time. Originally we were going for a ride in an amphibious vehicle in Santa Barbara but that plan fell through...They take you on a tour of Downtown Santa Barbara, and then drive right into the ocean and sail around for a while, then drive out and drop you back in the middle of town again! It's really absurd and fun; I recommend it.  :)

So jealous that you're done with assignments! I have a stack looming, but i know I'll procrastinate until Sunday, so I'm not even going to stress out about it ;D

We have "duck boats" in Boston, and while I've only done the tour once, and, I agree, it's a lot of fun! And, it's pretty cool to drive right into the Charles River and then out again!

And, Inselaeffchen, I have some of those same cookie cutters (I have 2 sets... I can't remember which 2, and I can't locate them right now!), but I'm intimidated by the decorating. Can't wait to see how yours come out!

I set out to make a patch today, and it turned into a mug rug...I suppose adding more stitches will turn it back into a TM patch.  :)

ummmmm......I tend to go a little bonkers sometimes. LOL. I did them all day last Sunday. Cutting the fabric into squares took the longest. I'm very impatient so Teesha's technique is right up my alley because they are supposed to be kinda shabby right? Please say yes.   ::)

Phew, birthday party a success, but totally wore this momma O-U-T!
I should have everyone accepted and updated.  I'm pretty sure I have hosting phase-one down, woop woop.
I will be heading out of town on Thursday to my little sister's house....she's having her sonogram on Friday to find out if she's giving me a niece or another nephew.  So, I'll be doing partnering on-the-go.  I'm going back and forth on separating everyone by similar interests OR making 2 piles for out-of-country and only-USA senders and just randomly grabbing partners from each pile and seeing what happens.  Ooooh or maybe one partner with similar interests and one with different (for those of us with 2 partners).  This is how my mind has fun.  I think this is the perfect swap to play around with comfort zones  ;D but it's also nice to be inspired by what you get to craft.  Either way, I hope everyone is excited!

Glad the party was a success! And, I'm going to have to hit the store for some fabric bits, I think. I think that, since profess report grades are due Tuesday, I'll reward myself on Wednesday with a trip to JoAnn Fabrics. I've got a nice stash of FQ prints, but no too many solids, so I think I need to remedy that!

I won't sleep as late tomorrow, so maybe I can take a crack at something before I head out for the day. I do have a 3-day weekend next weekend, and I have no plans, and I mean to keep it that way! I'm going to have a crafting mini break :)

started some patches yesterday!

questions:

1) Do you wash your fabric first?
I usually do with big pieces but I bought some 'fabric charms' and it said not to. It says to hand wash. It got me to wondering if I could do this with the larger pieces I've bought as well. I guess it does not matter; either way it gets done right?

2) does everyone put batting or some kind of fluff in between their fabrics? If so, what do you use? If not, do you see much of a difference?

Just wondering on some different techniques!

Post by: meowari on May 17, 2015 07:23:50 AM
I wash and dry almost all of my fabric as soon as I bring it home, but not for the fat quarters and small pieces I buy for making TM patches.

I put a thin layer of batting in between my layers, but I've used foam before.
I think putting something in there gives it more texture, but you can do whatever you want- that's the great thing about making these!

I wash large pieces of fabric in the machine, small ones by hand.  I use either cotton quilt batting, for flat patches and mug mats, or poly batting, for puffy patches.

Post by: quaggy on May 17, 2015 07:50:40 AM
I use both as well.  I have found that if I use fiber fill once I have stitched the edges I hit it with a hot iron and it flattens a bit and helps distribute the fiber fill to make stitching a bit easier.

Title: Re:
Post by: Sharalee on May 17, 2015 08:58:21 AM
I don't wash my flat quarters!  I iron them though!  I have used polly stuffing. Lately I've been using the fleese stuffing which I kind of like it better but either way is fine!  Most anyway is fine that's why I like TM patches because you really can't go wrong!

Title: Re: Yet Another TM Patch Swap Round 5 (SIGNUP 4/30/15-5/14/15; MAIL BY 6/13/15).
Post by: calluna on May 17, 2015 02:01:12 PM
For a non-washable fabric, try steaming it and/or letting it sit in the sun for a while.

If you're using regular cotton fabrics, and other fabrics of similar weight, the stuffing makes a big difference, especially if you stitch through it a lot to condense it. If there isn't a lot of stitching, so the patch looks more like a pillow than a poptart, that stuffing won't help as much with structural integrity, but it still helps a little. No matter how many stitches are worked on fabric that lacks that quilting layer in the middle, the finished piece will likely still feel floppy and flimsy...Which is fine for many projects, but the stiffness is part of what makes these patches work as book covers and bags. Or, potentially, playsets (http://snippetsnscraps.blogspot.com/2012/02/gillians-show-and-tell-pieces.html) (scroll down on this link; such a great idea for a fabric dollhouse).  :)

If you use thicker fabrics like fleece, fulled sweaters, or knit swatches, you'll be fine without stuffing.

My first several patches were stuffed with pieces of a fluffy bathrobe I'd cut apart for a project. Though that made the stuffing even, the fluff always pulled through with the stitches, and it looked bad.

For several years I've been trying to use up a bag of polyfil left over from a store-bought throw pillow that turned into a craft-fail :D (I wanted some part of that pillow to go to good use!). It has not been ideal because it's very bunchy. I will try quaggy's tip to help with that. I compensate for the unevenness with tons of stitches.

For my last two patches, though, I inserted a scrap of soft, thick flannel between the two fabric pieces before sewing any of the sides. It's been so much easier to work with, and still sturdy. I don't know specifically what this fabric is called, but it is used for some baby blankets and other baby accessories; it isn't fleece (no fluff pulling up through the stitches), and it is very lightweight, but still thick. If I had quilt batting I'd definitely want to use that, but since I just work with what I have, these alternatives are fine.

Title: Re:
Post by: Sharalee on May 17, 2015 03:38:34 PM
Yes I like all your ideas "calluna" !  The  fabric doll house sounds fun! The flannel sounds pretty neat too!  I might have to try that!  Thanks!

I've been experimenting with some different kinds of filler too. I've used the insides of a pillow (polyfil) and that worked ok but it did pull through a little while embroidering. I'm currently using quilt batting (some kind of poly too but more dense) that seems to work pretty good. I thought of cutting up a old clothing or a flannel blanket and after reading your post Calluna I might give that a try!

I don't pre-wash the fabric, usually. It's only pre-washed if it's a remnant from something that I made where I had to pre-wash.

I started making patches using the "pillow" method and stuffed them with poly-fil, but didn't love how wonky they always ended up looking. So, I now use 2 layers of cotton batting, and I love how much neater my patches look!

Title: Re:
Post by: Sharalee on May 17, 2015 06:16:44 PM
I have also used wool felt  & it works ok!  I do use the  polly fil but I don't put to much in. So when I embroidery it works pretty good. Some designs I like it to be a little puffy. Just depends on what I'm making!  That's why I like these patches because everyone makes them different & that's what I like!  So fun!

I usually use polyfil and never had any problem with it pulling through much, but since I've come back to Japan, the brand I can find here is much finer and denser and pulls through a LOT, so I'm thinking of using quilt batting this time instead to avoid that.  I've used quilt batting before too, and it makes for a much more even patch than my puffier ones.  I still haven't decided which still I like better! (I'm sure I can find other filling brands as well here if I look around more, but since I already have some quilt batting I'll use that for now.)

I've already decided on the designs for both my patches, and plan to get started on them this week!

You're not alone, lindyv321 ... I've been looking into a couple of things for my partners, next will be a "stash dive" to see what I have (or if I can go shopping ;) ) and then make patches ... most likely will leave the decorating for a bit later.

The worst part for me doing the patches is usually the edges of the patches ... :o Really have to figure out a way without constantly bruising my thumb! :o

I really appreciate the conversation about methods and supplies. I have obligated myself to swaps (and gifts) up to my eyebrows and have just finalized my ideas and will work on design over the next week. I purchased some polyfil but am thinking about what everyone said and might go with felt. I have tons of it and I have done ATC cards that look a lot like many of the TM patches I have seen. I could even go with felt pieces to get the polyfil look if I wanted.  One of the patches is a simpler design. I might try with that one and see how it goes.

I am thinking I should have asked for two partners.  ;D

i vary the filling based on the design. i like it fluffy if i'm going to embroider, but felt if it's stamped. i had a long car trip yesterday so i got a good start on my patches. the first  one is completely finished!  i don't have them all planned out, i'm more likely to take my inspiration one at a time, or make it up as I go. the downside of the car trip was coming up with a really good idea, and not having the right color fabric with me.

I have always used poly stuffing without any issues. I like the poofy chunkiness.  I have tons of felt taking up space so one day I might try a few layers of that.

going camping this weekend so I won't be able to do much. i was thinking of bringing some supplies along anyway and working on them but I don't want them to end up smelling like campfire! better not...

I'm actually waiting for all of my fabric to get here this weekend. I moved for school years ago and had to leave my entire stash at my parents house, but it is finally going to be mine again!

Congratulations! I did the same thing a couple years back, and it was a bit like having a limb amputated! I felt like I was missing a part of myself without my supplies!

I have one thing I must do this weekend (mow the lawn...blech), but the rest of the weekend will be spent in crafty pursuits (after a visit to the recycling center). Patches are on the list for the end of the long weekend. And, my Tuesday night event got cancelled, so I have the evening free to work on them, if I need to!

i made some good progress while i was waiting on my son at the dentist. the small size makes these easy to take along. we stopped at the craft store after and i found the fabric i wanted (yah!) he spotted some starwars fleece and decided he needed a blanket. at the cutting table i remembered that he already has a startwars fleece blanket. he looked at the fabric and replied" that one doesn't have ships on it"

the force is strong with this one. we compromised and got enough to make a pillow.

If I could get home at a decent hour, I'd have my patches all made! Two long days in a row, and tomorrow, I won't be home until around 9:30, and Thursday, it'll be close to 7. Looks like I might be packing my patches along with me on the bus trip to DC! I do have a lot of time to work on them, and if I do two parts before I go, then I can do my stitching on the road. The first 2 parts are the fussy bits.

"jenleahlynn"  For the kit I just make them no more than 5"x5" or maybe a oblong size! Another way is just put a piece of fabric in or a flat quarter & they can make it the size they want. It's just what ever you want to do!

I've been working hard, and have much hard work left to do this week and far beyond, and in spite of being crampy I have this pervasive sense of wellbeing today. School gets out at 2:30, and I stayed at my desk until just after 8:00. I only came home because my stomach was growling! I have some more work to do before bed, and I have to go back in the morning (the building is open from 8-10:30). All of this so I can be gone for 4 days as a chaperone on the 8th grade Washington DC trip! It's more work to be out of class because everything has to be spelled out. Plus, I have to provide back-up activities just in case my sub can't access my technology. So, it's double planning!

Which means I won't be able to start patches until tomorrow night or Sunday. And then, I'm packing them up for the bus ride!

Slept through my alarm and in the rush to get out of the house to the car waiting to pick me up (I woke at 5:30, when I was supposed to be picked up at 5:30), I left a stack of stuff (chaperone materials, a book, water bottle & patch supplies) behind. So, I will be late sending :( But, we're almost to our destination (slight delay to swap buses with one with a working AC).

I am still here but this last week was crazy,  end of school Thursday prep on Friday for all three high school graduations. 17 hour work day Saturday to get all students parents band and choir buses into Houston for ceremonies.  Helped my son with son stuff Sunday. Back to work today and summer school starts tomorrow.

I will have mine ready to send on time, mainly because I took only 1 partner knowing my life was gonna be so hectic with very little time to craft much less even sleep.

Bah my favorite needle broke while embroidering! All my other needles are too short or the eye is too small for my taste, so I may have to go out and get some better ones. I'll have to get creative and use some techniques that don't require much stitching until then.

3 patches down, 75% done on #4. i'm cautiously optimistic that I'm actually going to send on time. It seems likely.

I might have bent the definition of a TM patch so far that it broke on the last item. It'll still do the job intended, only a bit stiffer than the rest. Right now I'm mostly hoping to have enough time to make the extras I dreamed up.  ;D

Extras are the fun part. I love surprises!

Some issues with Hobbitses meant I only started yesterday evening with the edges of the patches (which usually takes the most time when I do TM Patches - and the most sore finger tips!!). I've got ideas for the embellishments, so that will be done tomorrow and then send off on Friday I hope! Am trying to cover 2 different themes instead of sticking to one (as tempting as it is! ;) ), specially because fatewineroses and I have both Doctor Who as a theme! ;)

Okay, I think it was fate that I left my patch supplies behind. We've had to switch buses multiple times on this trip (we'll be getting our 10th, and hopefully, final bus at our rest stop). After almost leaving my supplies in an airport last summer, chances are good that I would have left them behind on one of our many buses!

Finally sent!

Does anyone else find themselves irrationally annoyed by postage costs? I'm to the point where it's starting to feel like sending packages by courier will be cheaper in the end!

I just sent too and was shockingly surprised at the shipping cost.  For some reason it was less than I expected.

I am ready to send to Ludi tomorrow, but I'm not quite there with RovingAnarchist's package yet...
I hate when you start off with some great ideas, but the execution isn't anything like you pictured.  :-\

Don't sweat it. I had a similar issue. i always have that issue. I'd much rather see an original idea than a perfect execution. That's really why we craft in the first place, isn't it? Things that are so perfect they look machine-made are technically impressive, yes, also boring. I love the little imperfections and wonkies that show someone putting their love and attention into a project! (At the risk of sounding all new-age-y and hippy dippy, isn't that the principle that prayer shawls work on? The maker puts good intentions and hopes for someone's improved well-being into the stitches, and that energy goes to the recipient when they give the shawl away.) Mistakes give a project personality!
