Title: Begging machines or toys with arms!
Post by: cmarion3 on February 12, 2015 11:54:11 AM
The Curiosity Cabinet swap has been a blast. Check it out in the swap gallery. I made a number of things for the swap and then for me.

A while ago I acquired doll arms...lots of doll arms and have been trying to use some in swaps. So meet the

Begging Machines. They were designed by the infamous "Armless Monk", no monk, but he wore monks robs for ease and for enhancing his begging. And since he had no arms, he invented the "begging machine" to get that last coin in hand.

Here is the original version, sent away in a swap. The base is a 2.5 inch block.

The embossed metal panels are former soda cans, hand embossed with a variety of tools and distressed with paint and sand paper. The other items were all out of my stash...all of it!

And now my smaller version for me. The base for this is a 1.5 inch block, quite a bit smaller.

and trundling off to go to work.......

Just so cool and odd...the details and the amount of texture on the piece are fabulous!

All sorts of doo-dads...what is the top of the large one?  it almost looks like a chesnut! ;D

I love that you did a mini one for yourself...it is also very nicely detailed!

The top of the big one is a wooden top turned upside down and stuck in the top of the block. I had fun with drills and teeny little nails, metal can bits and lots of paint layers put on and wiped off. And I've about used up my one pad of distress ink.

I laid out a plastic sheet and dumped all my wood bits, old metal bits, odds and ends out to paw through. My DW found several cool items to use to build a cigar box diddly-bow and strum sticks. A cigar box guitar is next. Now I've sorted everything and stashed it away again just so we can walk around the room.

P.S. I added this above, but the first one has a 2.5 inch block and min is a 1.5 inch block, I have a smaller shelf to work with. Quite a bit difference in scale.

Yay this is awesome! The more I look at the pics the more detail I find. Is that a hinge that is tinted blue? Hinges intrigue me cuz I wanna see if summat opens and I can peek in. Love the hand, love the wheels, love what you called it. Really nice work!

Me too. Hinges mean lids which means treasure! No, just a distressed little hinge to nothing. The sad thing is, this made hardly a dent in my stash. But then no stash means no cool things to find to glue onto begging machines!

Such an imaginative use of bits and bobs! The hand feature is great, but I really love how you shaped the eyes out of bottle caps! So great  :D

The little bits of sleeve make the hands even creepier somehow.

Well, the arms looked rather naked and even scarier without the sleeves...very dead looking. Of course painting them silver and silver/gold then distressing them did not help. Some poor zombie is walking around missing an arm or two.

P.S. I have a whole box of arms. Yikes!

Very cool begging contraptions; I dig the creative surface designs/motifs you came up with.  I bet if a real person down on their luck tried using something like this to get money, people passing by would probably contribute more than usual just because of the novelty factor.

So, how did you come by so many doll limbs?  Are they remnants from complete dolls, or just the bagged ones that you can buy for use by people that make their own dolls from scratch?

The arms came from a silly e-Bay bid that I was sure would be out bid, and wasn't. So I received a box of doll arms. I wish there had been more small ones, but I have all sizes. So I've been trying to use them up in all kinds of crazy ways.

PM me if you need doll arms, most the very small ones are gone (3-4"). It's an easy swap for me.

And rackycoo is my muse!

I thank you for the offer of doll limbs, but I only collect anatomically complete ones.

Maybe you could use them to make one of the Hindu gods/goddesses that have multiple sets of arms (Durga is my personal favorite)?

This piece reminds me of the song, 'The Marvelous Toy' ...it's fantastic!
