Title: Bead and Sequin Hair Flowers (FINALLY! with tutorial - img heavy)
Post by: elmonerd on July 14, 2005 05:06:22 PM
This is a tute from my new mini kit and it is also include in the booklet Crafty Hair Accessories. You can follow the instructions for almost any beaded hair flower or pin, so try out different shapes and sizes and of course colour. And show me! I'd love to see your stuff, so when your done post it here!
------------------------------------------------------

Cutting Out Your Foam Flower Template

It might be a little tricky to get the exact shape of the template from the craft foam, so you will have to do a little trimming. Once you have cut out the flower shape turn it around to the right side up and trim off the uneven edges a little to get the flower even. But don't get caught in the vicious over-cutting cycle!

Threading the Needle

When threading your needle, take just over an arms-length of thread and put it through the needle eye. Tie a knot in one end and leave the other open and a little overlapped, but don't tie the two ends of thread together, it'll be too thick to work with.

Part 1: Sewing

Sewing on Beads

1. Cut out the flower template from the supplied card stock.

2. Trace it onto your foam piece and cut it out.

Sewing on Sequins:

This is fairly straight forward because this tiny flower only requires one sequin for each petal.

Save and print out this template onto some cardstock, then trace it onto your craft foam:

ORIGINAL POST

I figured these could go here, even though they're not really jewelry.
I was inspired by my payless flip-flops to make these beaded and sequin hair flowers, although mine were probably made more carefully and definately with more love...

Pink and White hair flower

Ooh! I'd definitely wear the pink one. It's so very pretty and they look small enough to be subtle. Wonderful.

Whoa these are so pretty. I really enjoy wearing flowers in my hair and having sparkly, beaded flowers would be even better. I love the gold one. I'd like to wear several tucked away in my curls. I'll be making these. Did you just use a craft glue? I've noticed I have to use some seriously strong adhesive when I make hair accessories.

Hey everyone glad you all like them! I hope you guys do make some, show me the pics when you're done.

I just use a hot glue gun to put the two foam pieces together, so far so good.

those are too cute.  :D what'd you use for a base? they'd be wicked cute as a brooch too.

I used 2 cut out foam pieces. Yeah they'd make pretty cute brooches and buttons for bags and stuff.

here's a couple of others

They are so pretty!  You definitely should make some as pins.  I love them, but my hair is horrible and rejects bobby pins, barrettes and combs.

Hi everybody! I didn't realize this was still a jewelry featured project. Since I'm here I thought I'd post my most recent version of beaded hair flower.

I think they're my favourite, and I just traded them away on etsy. But I'm so glad someone loves them as much as me, I suppose I could make more, but it seems like it's not quite the same. *tear* *sniffle*

I'll post a quick tutorial here if you guys would like?
Thanks,
Eleanor

OOOO....Did you say tute?!  I just found this thread and I love the flowers.  My hair is so long that little things seem to get lost in the mass of it, but I still want to make bunches.  They just look so fun, delicate, and feminine.

Oooh, ooh oooh...I have a recital Friday night and I've been looking for a big green sparkly hair flower...now, I can make my own! ;D
Only, I don't know if I have time :-\
Have you ever done a larger one on a comb?
Any tips before I start?
Great job and so creative!

aww...you're welcome guys! I'm glad you find it useful.

alohamom2three - I've never made one for a comb, but it'll probably work out great. You might want to use super glue to attach it to the comb though, cause I doubt hot glue will keep it on there.

I'd recommend making a large one and small one and gluing them side by side on the comb, or something like that.

Thanks for all your praise everyone :)
