Sendouts October 20, 2014

This is not a traditional gallery, we will be posting pics of what we make, not of what we receive.  Please claim a spot.

Everyone please make one post that will be your personal gallery post that you will keep adding your pics to as you make blocks for your partners.  After everyone has a gallery, then we can start chatting about what is posted, just so we have all of the galleries at the beginning, k? I'll let you know when all the galleries are ready.   All are here and I hope I got the mistake fixed (sorry Homerof2)

I will link up the names with their gallery once everyone is here!

thanks for taking part in this round

well and wonderment

carolmb - your city/state/country theme
A Dala horse, a type of toy from the 1800's or so that's now most commonly sold as decoration. Many think of it as a symbol for Sweden in general, but it's really from the province of Dalarna. They mined for iron there, had mining horses and made red ocra paint from iron, that's still considered a traditional wooden-house-paint.

The Lappish Gate (http://www.multi-media.se/Kungsleden/images/Lapporten.jpg), in Abisko National Park. The name is related to a less-pc-version of the name for the Sami people, "Lapp", which is believed to be an old finnish word for "The other". The Sami live in northern sweden, norway and finland, and have their own governmental council, though they're subjected to laws of the country they're in. They're the only people allowed to keep reindeer as livestock, which they herd into the mountains in summer, and down to the coast in winter, roaming free other than that.
Abisko national park is a common hiking area, alpine and fairly easy to walk.

The most important part of swedish culture. Fika. ::) It's sort of like "have a coffee", but the focus is on the pastries, with the group name "fikabröd" (fika bread). What you drink isn't important, but it's usually coffee or tea, lemonade or milk for kids. In a stretch you could fika a sandwich and some tea, definitely if it's a jam sandwich, but mostly you'll have a bun or possibly a danish or donut. You could have cheesecake or sweet pie, though slices of birthday cakes is a bit over the top for fika. Traditionally you have fika break at ten or three each day, sometimes both. Though it's not that frequent in the city (it's not too healthy, and most of us have office jobs!), but we often have at least weekly fika at work, either at the cost of the employer (usually cheap bun-braids) or organized by the employees. If not, people will usually take some fika at home :)

kbrison - quilter's choice of paper piecing, rainbow colors, white background if applicable

cursive_queen - ribbon star (http://www.freshlypieced.com/2012/01/ribbon-star-block-tutorial.html) in halloween fabrics (f.ex orange, black, purple, green colors when in doubt)

emisaurus - broken herringbone (http://www.play-crafts.com/blog/tutorials/broken-herringbone-block/) with white spaces, in navy blue and cold/pale greens (https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5591/14870054154_82f1b56f88_b.jpg)

Sloth003 - block 1 & block 3

Stellou - Friendship Star blocks

Sparkledust - Anvil blocks  Even though two of the blocks look blue, I promise they're really purple. I had hoped that photographing them outdoors would give true colors, but guess the problem is with my camera rather than the lighting.

Alwaysinmyroom - Garden Fence blocks

Group 2
Carolmb - Road to Oklahoma blocks. My paternal grandmother was born in Indian Territories, which became eastern Oklahoma, the first member of her family not to be born in France. My paternal grandfather immigrated here from Italy. My maternal grandfather came from St. Louis but his mother came from Bohemia. My maternal grandmother was born in Texas, but her ancestry traces back to Scotland, Ireland, Wales, a co-author of the Declaration of Independence, and a signer of that document. So the Road to Oklahoma block truly does represent the paths my family took to arrive here. The background looks like dust swirls, which reminds me of the Dust Bowl that ravaged western Oklahoma in the 1920s and 30s. The green represents our trees and grasslands. Oklahoma is home to one of the largest and last untouched grassland prairies left in the US and my part of the state is referred to as Green Country.

Melladh - cats

Cursive_Queen - Halloween stars

Emisaurus - Broken Herringbone

carol--we all enjoy seeing your blocks...it is motivating to see them as you do them...I started Homerof2's blocks since I have plenty of orange and black...have to go get some purples for a few of you...it is one of my favorite colors so I use it a lot...at least I tell myself that so I can go out and get more fabric! ;D

Title: Re: Quilt Block Swap Round 6 Gallery
Post by: Melladh on August 15, 2014 08:37:22 AM
Today I picked out all the fabrics for cursive_queen, then I went to bed and fell asleep :D got a bit of a cold going, so I'm not very productive. But I better be well by morning, because we've planned a trip to the wool fair, and I'm driving!

I might actually not have to buy any fabric for this round, which is a first. But I have to head for some online stores for ... Quilt... Outline... Thing... English fails me when I'm tired, you know that bit yo frame with that isn't as far out as binding? Yeah... That stuff. Need it. Apparently local stores don't sell white on white fabrics this season.

I love it, Carol, especially the yellow smiley face fabric! That certainly nails my propensity for using smiley icons.

I just bought a few small pieces of fabric this evening. I needed some more variety for Emisaurus's blocks so picked up two fat quarters. Then, except for the black, I didn't have solids or fabrics that read as solid for Homerof2, so I picked up a half yard of each of those as well. OK, I know 1/4 yard of each would have been plenty, but you can't buy just 1/4 yard, can you? ;D

Most of the blocks have been cut out now, so should start sewing next week. Going to a scrapbook convention tomorrow, so know I'll be playing with paper the rest of this weekend.  ;D ;D

You are all making me feel so far behind ........ I'm still in the summer mood and sewing is not part of the plans.  I will probably not start sewing until September but will print out the patterns and look over my fabric to make sure I'm good to go then.

I cut out all the fabric for the ribbon stars. Now I'm on a break. :D we've got this funny weather now where it's too warm to keep the windows closed, but so cold the floor is now super cold. And the ironing is making me really hot. So.. Top half. Burning. Lower half. Freezing. Middle... Not bad!

This is one of the fabrics I'm using, a tiny bit of red fuzz just placed itself perfectly like this, and I thought it made a funny face, especially compared to the rest :D

That does seem to be one of the problems with living Texas :D we had our three weeks of summer, now the weather has gone back to cooler crazy rather than hot crazy. Which is preferable tbh. :D

Tomorrow I shall attempt the first star, and hope I don't mess up!

Those are wonderful carol :)

Now I got uncertain about the colors for them :) I never saw any reply to the question about the white bg that carol sent, so I assumed the halloween colorscheme stood. I've got varying black backgrounds cut out for all of them, but I haven't sown them on yet, so let me know if I should cut them white instead, and I'll get right on it :D If it doesn't matter, I'll stick to what I cut, because it'll highlight my ribbons better I imagine :)

Melladh - sorry, I didn't know I didn't reply to all.  Any color background you feel works with the other fabrics you chose is fine.  I guess the only request would maybe be keep the background a solid (solidish) color so it doesn't distract from the focus fabric

Carol, I seem to remember a comment you made several rounds back about giving a block a little tug to make seams come together correctly.  ;) I hearby steal your title as "Queen of Tug" and claim it as my own. A little tug or trim will work just fine to fit my new blocks together. When added to the blocks from last round, I'm beginning to see a absolutely adorable storytelling quilt coming out of everyone's contributions. That house may need to be the centerpiece around which the rest of the story develops. It makes me very happy just to think of the possibilities. Thank you so very much for your hard work!

I like the fabrics you chose cursive, especially the arrows one :D That block is slightly intimidating to me, because while I'm well equipped with inch rulers, they ARE at max 12.5'' ::) I'm going to mess something up. Or just have a headache at it until I finally get around to it and figure out it's fine, we'll just have to wait and see :D

I might be able to finish the halloween stars tonight. Depends on how long dinner takes to make once I get home. :D (good thing with "grocery bag" services - you don't have to think yourself. Bad thing with it... Some meals take one and a half hour to prepare, because my kitchen is too small to multitask >_>)

melladh - I think you can do it with a short ruler - I just sometimes got confused which way it was suppose to be turned to be cut - especially since I wasn't using the same fabrics as the pattern.  I cut it to 13x13 and then will iron it and trim up some of the rough edges

Carol - I had that issue too, sometimes it's hard to tell which side you're suppose to cut

Started stitching Emisaurus's blocks this evening, but wondered why the seams looked so wide. That's when I realized I still had my utility presser foot in use rather than the 1/4" foot. Switched feet, ripped out three seams, tried again - -perfect! Just been one of those kinds of days!  ;D

lol I made a star for kbrison yesterday...after I got it all together, I realized that I did not put it together according to the pattern!  Oddly, it still looks like a star, so that was a bit of luck!  But, I decided not to tempt fate, so I worked on sparkledust's blocks! I'll have those done this evening as I did all of the cutting last night! ;D

Ok, now I'll wonder what it was suppose to look like.  :D But since it looks like a star anyway who but you would ever have known? Think it's funny because I just started cutting out your stars today. Believe me, if I screw up I'm definitely not admitting to it.  ;D

Fussy cut the star points for cursive_queen's Halloween blocks. Now I just have to make sure I sew them correctly. The center of the first block is a Charlie Brown Halloween print and the points (if they turn out right) will be some of the other characters. Am putting all of the blocks on black backgrounds . . . seems so much spookier.

Still need to find a good red-orange for Homerof2's blocks, then I'll have everyone's blocks cut.

I have made a list of the squares everyone wants along with color preferences - I may even start next week!

Halloween stars posted! :D The photo seems extremely low contrast to me, but then again I've got a bright wall reflecting low sunlight just behind my screen (well.. and across the road..) so it's hard to see on my computer right now. Hopefully it's clear enough to see :)

melladh--your Halloween blocks look terrific with the black background!

Love the colors and the layout as well...

I am pretty excited now that I see the blocks you did stellou!  I think I might have to spend some of this weekend making a few of those on my own...that quilt will be for me since they are in my favorite colors and I never get to keep a quilt for myself! ;D

sparkledust...I hope the pink and purples I had are not too bright for you...I really do not have any light/pastel colors in my stash!

I am going to do the broken herringbone next!

Looked at Carol and Cursive_queen's blocks for Emisaurus. Afraid that mine will clash horribly. My blues are fine but I definitely need to replace the greens I was going to use. Shouldn't be a problem though since I haven't started cutting the strips into segments. Just need to get out that seam ripper again and unsew some of the strips. :D Maybe I should just start working on someone else's blocks for awhile.

I think I've got the colors worked out, but we'll see :) I'm working on pinning the first sashed strip to the second strip (or, well, right now I'm working at my job, but when I'm not.. jobbing.. I'm pinning) so I should be able to finish before I leave for a week's vacation on saturday.

I was trying to make a funny >.> I fail. I think my blocks risk clashing with themselves you see, sometimes I'm quite inspired by clashing. I'll have to wait for judgement once I'm finished and post mine, and even then the screen isn't likely to show the colors right (nor will the camera have picked them up)

Yeah, I forget sometimes that my exaggerated ways of expression doesn't necessarily come across as OTT online as when I do it with loudness and flourishing irl ::) Note to suggestion box: Exaggerated Flourish smilies.

I actually cut the first block bit on the herringbone this morning, and I love the effect of the sashing. I mean I complain about everything new when I first encounter it, and the cut 1'' WOF was a bit annoying (partially because WOF is a different size here, for solids) but I'm REALLY enjoying the smoothness of this block. So far. If it all turns to crap I'll hate it. :D But right now, much love.

Sorry that I didn't catch the humor, Melladh. Blame it on my old eyes and the smallness of the smiley icon.  :-\ There are many times when the wider the variety of colors there are in an object the better it looks, but there are also occasions when the wrong shade just ruins the appearance. Trust me when I say that this would have been one of those 'all wrong' times.

On a side note, I've been clearing up my papercrafting scraps. Since my ironing board is the only craft space I currently have that's large enough and free of debris, I've been using it today for cutting paper motifs and trims. Should have it clear by this evening so I can use it for sewing again.

Hope to make it to Tulsa this weekend to buy some more fabric. Love shopping at JoAnn's! Should have some blocks to post by early next week.

I got to the quilt shop just after they opened and on my way in I said to the only employee - I'm only going to get what I came for but that's going to be so hard - and she laughed!  I picked up the 4 solids I wanted and let myself look for a minute but then couldn't do it longer without wanting to buy so I left.

And Melladh, if you ever make it to Tulsa, I can take you to 2 JoAnn's, 2 Michael's, and 3 Hobby Lobbys plus several quilt fabric stores. We have an abundance of craft riches here.

That's just not fair !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I would love to have a Hobby Lobby within driving distance but, wait, they aren't in Canada!  That means I have to drive a long way to find one  :'(

For me, hmm..... local quilt store not worth going to, quilt store in next town 10 minutes away is worth the drive usually, Michaels in next city 30 minutes away has no fabric, Fabricland in same city has some quilting fabric but so-so quality.  My next option is the even larger cities 1.5 to 2 hours away but unless I go to private stores they have no other chain options.  Now I know why I do most of my fabric shopping online or when we visit the US.

Now if we talk prices that just makes me cry  :'(   :'(   Our quilt fabric here is twice the price, or more, of buying online (including shipping) or when I shop in the US.  I used to think quilting was expensive until I found prices outside of Canada.

lo melladh!  I guess I never thought about all the crafting shops in our area...we take so much for granted.  We are putting together a resource list at our quilt guild...so far, we have 31 local quilt/fabric stores in our area.  We do not count Joann's, Hancocks or Hobby Lobby (most of our members are fabric snobsaficionados... ;D)...

I had way too much fun last night doing sloth's blocks!

I was thinking that maybe in the future, we do a swap where all of the fabrics/colors are the same...my poor craft room looks like it exploded rainbow!  Maybe we could have different patterns and then as a group, select 3-4 colors...just throwing it out there... ;D

oh homerof2...I just bought Kona solids yesterday on sale from $6.99 a yard to $3.99...I bought 1/2 yards of a lot of colors...the bill was about $15.

We used to have a quilt store only an hours commute away from home. We don't anymore. There's one shop in the capitol with maybe 20 bolts, another with another 20 bolts, a third with 20 bolts, a fourth with only a couple of FQs... Rarely any of the good ones, just something the store found fashionable at the time. And the price? About $20 per yard :P Just as often $25.

...isn't "exploded rainbow" what we generally aim for as crafters? :D Or exploded everything?

Title: Re: Quilt Block Swap Round 6 Gallery

We have so many Hobby Lobbys here because it's an Oklahoma corporation headquartered in Oklahoma City. Michael's is a Texas corporation, so as a next door neighbor, we have a lot of them too. Then JoAnn's bought out a former Oklahoma competitor, so that explains our abundance of them. Not sure how many Hancock's we have since I rarely shop there (too hard to get to). Then we have Quilt Sampler which is another quilting chain from our Missouri neighbors plus a few independent quilt shops. And that doesn't even consider all the quilt shows we have that bring in vendors from across the region.

At $20-25 a yard for quilting fabrics in Sweden, it sounds like those of us in the States need to send Melladh some care packages.  ;D

Probably because of the corporate stand on not funding women's health insurance if it includes abortion coverage. I almost never shop there either.

I'm still a radical; just not rabid about it. Unless it involves the closing of a favorite craft store or the failure to open a particular store in my backyard (and I do mean that literally, not figuratively)! I think the fabric department at JoAnn's would fit very nicely in my backyard and the papercrafting area of a Michael's would probably fit next to it too. ;D

Try mad about patchwork, based out. Of ottawa, free shipping in canada over 150... I usually same my. Kona orders for her cause her prices are cheaper.

At $20-25 a yard for quilting fabrics in Sweden, it sounds like those of us in the States need to send Melladh some care packages.  ;D

Lol, that's very nice, but you don't have to do that :D Truth is, almost everything is expensive here. Because we import everything. So take your prices, and add shipment. Then you add import customs fees. Then you add the cost of renting location here, and salary for the employees. And then you add sales tax. ::) ...and everything is FAR cheaper here than at our neighbor Norway's place :D Norway is oil country, so they have a higher baseline than us, but they're also more expensive for regular people. My favorite comparison is what is known as something like "hamburger market price", kind of hard to translate. A burger at a street kiosk costs about $5 here, but it'll cost about $12 in norway.

I'm going on one week vacation next week btw, so I might be out of touch :) I've actually only remembered to look up yarn shops where I'm going, no quilt shops! I have to google some more!

I want you guys to know that I am enjoying our discussion of the costs of crafting supplies in different parts of our country and the world!  Very interesting!

I got 5 of sloths blocks done, but I want to get the last one done before posting! ;D

They almost make a quilt with just the six blocks! ;D

Finished Carol's blocks, most of AIMR's Garden Fence blocks, and started on Sloth's blocks. Hoping the weather is clear enough to take photos tomorrow. Possibility of rain (which we really need) means it may be too cloudy to get clear shots. I never seem to get enough light inside for good photos unless I open all the drapes and it's sunny outside. :(

You're so speedy Carol!

I have some charity quilts that really need to get finished - but I'm hoping next weekend I can get back to the blocks.  I think I'm ready to try some paper piecing.  I find it very confusing, but I found a relatively simple block with clear instructions to dive into it

I am probably going to have to hold off doing the rest of my blocks until after Sept 15.  At least I got a few people done!  I want to finish homerof2's blocks and sloth's blocks since they have to go through customs and all.

I think there are going to be some amazing quilts coming up this year!  I am going to quilt a few of the ones from last rounds...and I have got to find the pictures of the charity ones I did as well.  Thank goodness the next wounded Warrior/firehall auction quilt is not due until March!

I had such big plans for making blocks this week but only finished one!

Tuesday was going to be 'the' big sewing day until I stopped at a friends just to say hi.  I wasn't going to visit, just say hi .... 4 hours later I left.  Yesterday I visited with a friend for a planned 1/2 hour ... 3 hours later I left.  I told her I must have needed to use all my words that afternoon and she replied 'good thing you don't know the entire dictionary'  :o  Today hubby's off so that means another day with no sewing but that's okay since I LOVE spending days with him  :-*

Don't feel intimidated; some of these blocks just come together really quickly, like AIMR's Garden Fence blocks. I think Sloth's may work up pretty quickly too.

sloths blocks took some time because you have many small pieces to cut and sew...thank goodness most of the cuts were 1-1/2 inches wide with various lengths...I recommend matching each solid center with your print fabric...cut out all of the solid centers, then the strips...once the cutting is done, the blocks went together fairly quickly...ironing between each sewing session was time consuming as well...sparkledusts blocks are quick and so are yours, kbrison...the stars are the hardest for me because of those diagonals...I learn so much doing these blocks...we still have nearly two months to sew, so don't stress...I just have two huge swaps to worry about so I needed to get these swaps at least half way done

carol--that ice crystal block is just beautiful!

I got krbrison's blocks posted.  I am going to mail out the ones I have done so far as I have a very busy schedule between now and October 15.  I don't want to be left with a lot of shipping at the last minute! ;D

I would like to remind everyone of a few mailing tips we learned from the last few rounds:

1. Put the blocks into a ziplock baggie to protect from weather.

2. Put a return address inside the bag and on the bag in case the outside bag gets ripped open.

3. Seal the outer bag with tape to be sure it stays sealed.

I would hate for any blocks to get lost!

Carol, the ice crystal block is jaw-dropping gorgeous! Thank you so very, very much!
AIMR, love the blocks you've made for me, especially the Martha Washington Star! The DNP blocks are going to add some much needed variety to the blocks I made but have never assembled.  :)

Working on Sparkledust's blocks now. Have white thread in my machine, so am working on any of the blocks with white in them. Just too lazy (and busy) to be changing thread colors for the next few days! ;D

emisaurus--your eggplant is fantastic!  lol I also love the stories...ha ha all the good vegetables were taken...that is too funny!

Each New Year, we have a pickle drop  because all of the good items to drop are taken (silver ball, strawberry, etc.).  I think it is ridiculously funny to watch a dill pickle drop to mark the New Year, but it is a tradition...

I love the Halloween blocks and colors...it is going to be a colorful and fun quilt!

homer of 2--they all look fantastic!  I see what you did...but I don't think there was anything wrong with that first block...sloth would have made it work...but I do like that you added more contrast with your fabrics on the new blocks...nice!

That is going to be one cool looking quilt, sloth!

There I was browsing over all the gorgeous blocks from this gallery when I saw these great stars from Sloth...I thought "I must make some of these there really striking"...hold on a minute they're for me ;D I just love them.
I am cutting Sloth's blocks at the minute and waiting for a new sewing foot as it looks like my 1/4 inch foot is not right. I will have to re make my garden fence blocks as they came out slightly too small >:( I am still to decide whether to do only stars  or do a paper pieced block for kbrison...decisions, decisions...

It is fun to see everyone's fabric collection in those blocks...kbrison is going to have a bit of all our stashes!

And all of you will have a bit of my stash since I'm swapping with all of you this round. Then there are all of you who already have some of my stash from previous rounds, just as I have some of your stashes.  ;D Love how our tastes are so very different in some respects yet so very similar in others. Makes swapping with you a ton of fun.

Finished Sparkledust's blocks and half of Emisaurus's but haven't been home during daylight hours to take photos. Hope to do that soon. Am now 1/3 of the way done to finishing everyone's blocks.

Homerof2, I think it's setting the segments around the center block that's the issue for me. Partial seams are just one of my problem areas.

And speaking of problems: I've tried to post AIMR's final star three times now and what shows up instead is one of Stellou's stars. Since the two blocks aren't even in the same date file, I don't understand why this is happening. Just tried posting it here instead and am still seeing the wrong star. Will try to photograph and post it separately tomorrow to see if that eliminates the problem.

I do like trying new things so I am glad to get a new or challenging block...normally, they turn out to be a favorite!  I love the flying geese block from last round even though I kept getting the geese backward...don't worry homerof2...I will cuss under my breath and not out loud! ;D

kbrison--what cute Halloween fabrics!

I keep looking at the gallery and am imagining all the blocks together ... I think we are all going to have some really lovely quilts!  I am very excited to have my own quilt to do this round and another quilt for Wounded Warriors!  They love the red, white and blue stars!

homer's blocks were challenging but not infuriating by any means. And they are scarier looking than they are doing. Mind you, that said, mine are certainly NOT perfect, and you dont have to look hard to see some blunt points. :) like the amish, i just made sure to add your mistake early on.

cursive_queen, if you look at pictures of her blocks made by others, there are mirror image ones as well.

Cursive_queen, until you made the comment about one of your blocks for emisaurus being a mirror image, I hadn't realized that 3 of the 6 I made for her are also mirror image. Yikes! Didn't think I was THAT tired when I was sewing them. We still have plenty of time to remake blocks, so I'm making the same offer: I'll gladly remake those three blocks if you'd prefer that, emisaurus.

Unless a person is going to use all of the blocks from one person together, I doubt that the mirror imaged blocks would even be noticed! ;D

Just a little note to say I'm still here...I haven't done much in the last couple of weeks but I have picked all my  patterns. Great selection of blocks we have here. :)

Sparkledust the first block you show for Sloth, the black and white one, is fantastic!  I love the fabric you used.

Thanks Homerof2, what I love about this swap is how you can use leftovers from other projects :D

I really love all the stars, it always amazes me how different stars look in different colourways, and my, you lot are so amazingly accurate! I've been using my learnt lessons from previous rounds so hopefully I've improved!

Now I've finished crafting for the 13 days Halloween swap and seeing all these wonderful Halloween blocks, I think I know what my next quilt project should be, I just know my hubby would love that.

I have a room to paint this week and then I'll be concentrating on finishing these quilt blocks so expect some more very soon from me :)

emisaurus--love the blocks you did for me!  classic pairings...

I will be finishing up my blocks and posting them as well...I want to mail out the international ones quickly since it will take some time to have them delivered...

kbrison...I missed some of your blocks...I adore the little Peanuts gang Halloween block!  And, I love the white patterned fabric that you did on one of my stars!  I know this sounds corny, but I get a bit teary each time I see the red, white and blue...I guess because I grew up in a military family and I am so proud of our military men and women.

And a daffodil for kbrison...I hope it's ok to mix stars and paper pieced blocks

And i was thinking of asking for a pieced block again. Next round. Its a fairly simple one. Not like the geese. :)

I just need to choose the colour palette.

I may have a problem. :) not even done this round. And already planning next.

It's hard not to think ahead to the next round when you see such great blocks being chosen each round. Not that we're greedy or anything, but I know how often I've seen someone's blocks and thought how much I'd like to have them, too.  :D

Sorry not to have answered earlier...I had to look it up since I'm good at forgetting things :D It's a Brasstown star.
I have 2 blocks to make and 3 to start again as they are a little on the small size.
I agree with you all. This is very addictive! Am I the only one to find paper pieced blocks easier than regular ones?

Sorry for being quiet. I haven't dropped off the face of the earth. :) Between work and being sick (and having curious symptoms investigated) I haven't had a lot of time to work on this (and I've had to scrap birthday present plans as well - luckily christmas is coming up, so it can turn to christmas presents!). I'm still hopeful I can pull the last blocks together before the deadline :)

Sparkledust!  I am so excited about those stars you made for me!!

I also like the apple...and definitely, next round, I would like to do some piecing blocks...you guys are very encouraging and inspirational!

I can't wait to start getting blocks...they say we are going to have a cold, snowy winter, so making quilts is the perfect thing to do when I get cabin fever! ;D

Two more blocks for kbrison. I don't know, I love wonky hearts (and wonky stars and stuff), but I feel so underachieving with everything I produce right now :D I've gotten a bit sick again, so maybe it's just self-pity :P 'Tis the season for everyone being sick here! No Ebola, promise. :) (hasn't reached here yet)
Kbrison, if you want better blocks, let me know, and I'll think of something better :D

Posted my cats for melladh.  I'm almost ready to put up pics of my paper piecing.  The hometown blocks had me frustrated.  I tried a new pattern,  first was too big, second attempt was too small and everything was looking wonky.  So I am going to get fresh fabric, keep to a classic and soldier on.

Cursive_queen--those pieced blocks you did are fantastic!  Do you have a link to the patterns?

I just put up the pics of my blocks for emisaurus, homerof2 and stellou.

In this round, my favorite block to make was the Broken Herringbone.  I loved the designed blocks by sloth and the easy, quick, go-to block from Sparkledust, the Anvil!  I love trying new blocks and new color combos.  Now to wait for the blocks to arrive! ;D

So far, I have received from homerof2, kbrison and sloth...and the blocks put together so far are going to make a wonderful quilt!!

No worries! I want to. ;D I needed to find out why despite my 1/4 inch foot the blocks don't come out the right size...and I like garden fence blocks (I think I will use it for my next quilt ;))
I have sent you the small blocks anyway in case you can make them fit. But I now have finished 3 proper sized ones that I'm sending tomorrow.

I am having trouble with the same thing!  The woman at the quilt store said it could be my ruler is so old that the edge has slowly been worn away...so I am getting a new ruler to see if that helps!  I set my computerized machine to 1/4 inch and it seems to measure correctly, so I think she is right!

I got some gorgeous stars from Sparkledust yesterday!!

I love reading about your traditions, melladh!

We sort of have a similar thing at our office:  we all usually have yogurt at 10 am and then at 3 pm, we have some sort of snack before going home...fruit, crackers, tea, or even left overs from our lunch.  Our office definitely believes in food breaks! ;D

Homerof2, we've swapped enough times that you should know I'd never intentionally be mean.  >:(   ;D I haven't posted photos of your blocks for several reasons: 1) Haven't been able to get decent photos due to lighting issues, 2)My mouse died and my laptop doesn't like manual manipulations (it keeps deleting my reply posts - -aargh!), and 3) your blocks are some of the worst I've done, so I'm more than a little embarassed to post them. But since you're making such a fuss (LOL), I'll go post them now or at least I'll try. BTW I was tempted to just send you the extra fabric and let you make your own because I was so frustrated by the blocks. Can't tell you how many times I ripped out the seams.
Posted and they don't look bad, but a lot of corners are going to get chopped off when you try to join them to other blocks.

kbrison--don't feel bad...I was not 100% pleased with those same blocks...I did not notice until I took pictures that some of the points will be chopped off when joined as well...grrrrr....I wonder now if the measurements were a bit off since we both had the same issue...

You know, with that said, I will say that when I started joining this swap, I knew that with so many different levels of experience, that I would receive some blocks that would not be done the way I do it...and vice versa....but I have learned to adapt and seeing how well everyone else's mish-mashed quilts turned out really inspired me...

I love all the blocks with all of the little "quirks"...they are my favorite types of quilts...made with love and fun!

aw geez---I just looked at your blocks, kbrison...and they look darn good! ;D  I wish I had thought to mix the colors up more! geez--I am so uncreative!  I made all of mine the same! you guys really rock!

kbrison, if those are some of the worst you've done, I'm impressed how bad you are  :P   :D   ;D  They look great!

Lesson learned - never, ever, ever pick this block again in this swap!  Sorry everyone!

I'll use the ones I'm receiving for a small quilt and find something different for upcoming rounds.

homerof2--I thought it was a lovely block!  I think when we get things off the internet, it is a crap shoot!  I like to try new things but sometimes you don't know how it will turn out!  I make notes on the patterns to adjust for next time...I think you can make a lovely quilt with those blocks!

I noticed that they look good against the Halloween blocks that cursive_queen is getting...so maybe you can combine blocks as well?

I know for myself, I am not skilled at triangle making...I need more practice doing the diagonal stitching, so I would go at that block again if you picked it! ;D

I think kbrison is brave for picking stars...lol...I bet you will have many with cut off points! ;D

I've made this block for myself and really liked it, that's why I chose it but I don't like being the one that you'll all talk about the next round..... remember that horrible block Homerof2 chose last round  :'(       :D

I loved the look of the block, too, and am determined to master it. Think I'll try to track down a paper-pieced version. As for being the one we all grinch about, I've had my own turn in that spot when I chose the Thistlebloom block. It was mainly just some Flying Geese segments but turned out much more challenging than I thought it would be. That's why I decided to stitch the rest of the blocks I'll need for that quilt myself rather than ask it of any of you. See how compassionate I am?!?!?!?!? ;D

oh I loved them, too...but you know how it is...we have to give everyone grief to show how much we love them! ;D

I was so excited to receive my blocks from stellou today!  They are so fun and lovely...I can't believe she is sending me another set because she thought they weren't sized properly! Lucky me!

oh that is a great idea for a child or baby quilt!  I would use the original small blocks for that one...I think they are about six inches and not twelve...

Title: Re: Quilt Block Swap Round 6 Gallery
Post by: sloth003 on October 29, 2014 12:54:49 PM
I thought the original was 10.... with a 4 inch center but a six (or 8) inch would be perfect for eye spy. Oooh. With solids around the outside. That would be awesome.

These are all my blocks - laid in rows of who they are from, not how I plan to use them - and I added some of my toes just so AIMR wouldn't feel silly being the only one having toes showing in pictures  :D  (isn't that thoughtful of me)

One monster lap quilt?

Or two reasonable sized lap quilts?

Title: Re: Quilt Block Swap Round 6 Gallery
Post by: stellou on November 02, 2014 01:38:09 PM
I vote for one monster lap quilt...for 2 or more to snuggle up together ;D

Title: Re: Quilt Block Swap Round 6 Gallery
Post by: kbrison on November 02, 2014 02:03:05 PM
Without borders the quilts would measure 60" x 72" for one large or 60" x 36" each for the two smaller size. Which measurements work best for the people who will be using them?

Title: Re: Quilt Block Swap Round 6 Gallery
Post by: carolmb on November 02, 2014 03:59:21 PM
I like bigger LOL

but the two lap size would be nice for kiddos. so depends on who they are for

wow--I knew I saved your pattern for a reason!  I love how it all looks together with all of the different fabrics!

I vote two quilts because then more people can benefit! ;D

The huge quilt is mighty impressive, however!!!

I received my 12x12 blocks from stellou!!  They are just as lovely as the smaller set!  I am thinking of using the smaller ones to make matching pillows to go with the quilt.  Thanks you so much!

congrats Donniesgirl!

Sloth - I like the large one, but as others have said, it really depends who the recipient(s) are

Grats donnies! :D

I vote for the huge lap quilt. But I live in a country where the only way to protect yourself from the cold (when it comes) is to be COMPLETELY wrapped in something, otherwise it'll just sneak in from any given opening. It's very raw here. -.- Whichever way you choose, I love how that is turning out. I think it's my favorite from this swap so far. The shapes are so gratifying to look at.
