Title: Crafting for ME along!
Post by: alteredmommy on January 03, 2013 04:09:31 PM
**Well crafting for oneself is harder than anticipated so I've taken the year off and hope that we continue to add to our lists of things we gift ourselves.  Even if it takes a few years ;D

If you are anything like me and have nothing to show people when they ask to see what you make, this is the craft along for you!  One of my crafty goals for 2013 is to make something for myself every month and KEEP it ;D

So its very simple, just post your project that you make for you and you alone every month.  It can be anything from art to clothing to something that just makes you smile, as long as you crafted it.  You have all month long to do it and can post at anytime.  You can make a wishlist or wing it, just have fun crafting for yourself.  Jump in at anytime!

Do things like my final project count? And can it be ongoing over a few months?  And I have a blanket that I've been workin on forever, but if I finish it through the year does that count too?  Some of the projects I want to make are so darn large....

loves2experiment you have to tell me what an obnoxious ring collection is....my imagination is working overtime :D  hopefully it is just a giant collection.....

Enticing idea.

I made:

7. modern art dress
8. belted dress

10. up-cycled dress to top and skirt
11. up-cycled medical blouse to summer blouse

I plan to make for myself:

2. hanging chair-done

4. backyard terraces to grow vegetables- done
5. mug rug
6. not so tiny tiny-house- built in january, needs decorating
7. watercolor paintings- started January

This is a great idea.  I am going to try and play along this year.  Since we can crosspost to our 50 lists I am hoping that I can get some of the me projects that I have been dragging around that list for years done.  I am reasonably certain I won't get them done month by month.  I am reasonably hopeful I will get 12 done over the course of the year.

Here's my partial list:
  • Wildflower quilt
    Paint/decorate bedroom
    Paint/decorate kitchen

1.

I'm in :) Great motivation to do things for ME - I usually either do things for my boys (so sort of for me) or do swaps to get things for me, but would be great to make some things myself too.
I have some WIP's to finish and some birthday and Christmas pressies to use/learn to do.

Green = WIP

8. up-cycle black velvet skirt and dress into something I can wear
9. make some sort of wall art for our bedroom
10. make at least one birthday cake* Epic fail on that one :(

Too bad you live so far away from my family. We would have loved to invite you to cook with us, especially birthday cakes which are one of my daughter's favorite.

May I ask what is a hessian wall hanging? I tried to google it but it 's not clear.

I'm not getting a great start to my ME crafting year. I have a long list of projects that I'm really super excited about but they are all for other people.

I think I need to set some deadlines for myself - like a personal swap with myself :).

Thank you for that yoopidou - having someone else doing stuff with me does help sometimes (other times i'm like 'Get the F*&K out of the kitchen!').

As for the wall hanging - I have a bigggggg piece if hessian (burlap??) - my DH bought me a roll of the stuff for my birthday a couple of years ago (I did ask for it - just wasn't expecting/want quite that much  :o ::) MEN lol) and I'm going to use it as the base material for a wall hanging. Trying to work out what I want to do image wise and how to create it, but know I want to use lots of different techniques, which is why I wanted the hessian as It is so versatile :)

Here's my cowl! I do not know how to knit or crochet but I had this yarn that I really liked and a crochet needle so I I gave it a whirl. I have no idea what stitch, if any I did. I  completely winged it but it I like the way it turned out and now I am happy and warm.

Hubby is always complaining that I make stuff for everyone else and not for myself or our home!  So, these are the things just for me!

1. A slouchy beret in a jewel tone yarn--done in January!
2. swimsuit coverup
3. lace shawl or shrug-done 6/11/13!
circular needle organizer/travel case with straps--ended up buying on instead :D
4. cocktail/dressy dress for reunion
5. kimono robe (two years on my WIP!)

 more to come.... :D

Love it, Kittykill!  Looks so squishy and warm.  You obviously can crochet, otherwise that would have been a knotted mess!

What is a nor-obi belt?  It sounds intriguing!

Title: Re: 12 crafty things for ME along 2013!
Post by: alteredmommy on January 16, 2013 10:47:44 AM
Here's the ravelry link (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/norobi)   I made a test belt last year out of some fake noro and decided that I would like it better in a solid colour.  My Irish yarn is a little lighter in weight than Noro but so far it looks okay and I love the idea of knitting something from my hard found souvenir yarn....you would not believe how difficult it was to find yarn in that tiny country full of sheep :D

Title: Re: 12 crafty things for ME along 2013!
Post by: alwaysinmyroom on January 16, 2013 10:53:53 AM
oh how cute is that!  I definitely think a solid color would work better...I do love the black and brown combo, though...I like your idea of using souvenir yarn to make things for myself...to remember the trip!  ha ha yes, I also found it difficult to find yarn in Ireland...I thought it would be easy to find wool fabrics as well, but not so!

Title: Re: 12 crafty things for ME along 2013!
Post by: alteredmommy on January 16, 2013 10:59:59 AM
haha everyone I asked thought I was nuts.  Apparently no one there knits anymore, people remembered their grandmothers knitting...when I asked where all the wool from the sheep went all I got was a shrug.  So when I found a yarn store by accident right before we left the town of Cashel I was so excited that the poor gal who owned it probly thought I was some kind of crazy Canadian yarn stalker :D

I finally mastered the i-cord with this pattern too!

Title: Re: 12 crafty things for ME along 2013!
Post by: alwaysinmyroom on January 16, 2013 11:04:25 AM
We should check with any of our Irish members for places to buy yarn should we ever go again! :D

Post by: Abbeeroad on January 16, 2013 01:16:04 PM
I love the norobi, alteredmommy! The solid beige almost looks like burlap. Very cool.

Who would have thought it would be so hard to find yarn anywhere? haha...I thought knitting was universal.

I thought of a few more items for my list!

2. Sewing machine cover (TM patch Never-ending WIP)
3. Patchwork skirt
4. iPhone stand

I'm thinking this craftalong will be a great success if I make ONE of these things!

You can go to the post that I linked on the front page and add your new things to your original list Abbeeroad, as I am not able to make any changes on this board :)

I should put sewing machine cover on my list too, I have one that I made and use but haven't gotten around to hemming the bottom yet ::)

awesome, I forget that I have no powers on this board, only in swapland :D

I frogged the Norobi belt tonite and started again with a double strand.  It was sooo curly with just a single that I doubt it would have laid flat as a belt even after blocking.  Liking the thicker result!

OMG I am so in. I actually made a list privately over the holidays for this exact reason, and said I need to stop making stuff to sell, gift, or swap. I've finally resolved to keeping ONE of my items that I make for sale, but I have the same problem, not much here to show for myself or things to enjoy at home. My husband makes the same comments, lol!
I wanted to do the 50 things but that craftalong is SO huge, and overwhelming, I tried it once and never got very far. This is much more doable and I like that it's a smaller crowd.

Here we go....
Green= work in progress
Blue= complete

1. New coin bra for bellydancing
2. Ghawazee coat or Turkish vest for dance (I've been phobic of that pattern and I need to just do it)
3. Wall art for Molly's room (Painting of squirrel tea party!)
4. Wall art for Evan's room
5. Finish setting up my new craft room and add an artist altar
6. Pot holders or trivets
7. Bag or purse
8. Halloween decoration
9. Christmas decoration (upcycled tree skirt into bunting)
10. One handmade item of clothing
11. One handmade accessory
12. Finish my peacock embroidery from last year and frame it
13. New bellydance costuming (halter top, pantaloons, and peacock fascinator)
14. Paper star garlands for the kids' rooms
15. New curtains for Molly's room
16. Mexican tiled console table
17.

JANUARY:
#13. New bellydance costuming

welcome to everyone joining us, good luck in crafting for you!

I like the 50 things craftalong mostly for keeping track of what I've made in the year-I am terrible about taking pictures or keeping a list and its nice to see it all together in one place :)  Although I haven't managed to hit 50 things yet (even though I'm pretty sure I've made that many things) because I keep forgetting to document....

Went to first ceramics lesson tonight, and was just playing with a lump of clay when this fella (or is it a fellette? not sure yet) started to appear. It really is for ME - I <3 dragons, and the class is my space too :)

I got my black pants about 1/2 done:) hope to finish tomorrow morning since I need them for work on Saturday.  I work at 11:45 on Saturday morning, so they need to be finished no later than 10am.

Also getting my craft room and bedroom organized, the goal this year is to keep them tidier so I can accomplish more and not be rushing to finish things as my nieces arrive for holiday things.

So the pants are a smidge snug  :( but since this year is about getting slimmer and trimmer, I will finish them and put them in the gift bag for when I reach my first goal of 10 pounds off - I lost 3 pounds last week, so only 7 to go:)  I'll head into town early tomorrow and buy a new pair of dress pants, should be able to get a pair that's long enough but cheap enough to wear for only a month or two.

Ooh! I've just spotted this thread. I think I'd better join 'cos I'm rubbish at doing things for me. Even though I have just achieved one and I'm working on another, they're there because I wanted/needed them several months ago, but got so caught up in Christmas crafting for everyone else that nothing for me got done for the last 4 months of last year!

This year's wish list:
  • Mushroom Basket (achieved!)
  • Hairband (also done)
  • Light Quilt
  • knickers (only if I get the means to sew stretch materials)
  • Washing tabs https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=421479.new#new (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=421479.new#new)
  • Soup Box
  • Cushion cover
  • Book safe
Erm, I'm sure there'll be more that I add onto the list, but I can't think of anything right now.

January - Mushroom basket :). And I finished my hairband too :) :)
February - nothing much finished, but a good start made on my quilt.
March - Knitted necklace (I'm not really impressed with this and might give it away if I can find anyone who wants it, but I did learn knitting with beads and that's what was really for me), a box to keep my cup-a-soups in, some washing tabs (these are delicately scented and I have a real sense of achievement in making them) and a stick vase, which I hadn't intended to make, but which I love.

This scarf looks very soft and warm.

I haven't done much crafting for me, as almost all the family got the flu, including me. I began working on the backyard terraces but was horrified by the cost of bricks, plastic wood or anything that I could use to retain the soil. I can't put branches because there are so many termites around here. I can't find treated wood that I could grow vegetables nearby either. I decided to try using wood pallets and change them when needed. Now, I have to find free pallets. If you have an idea, I am open to any suggestion.

Title: Re: 12 crafty things for ME along 2013!
Post by: alwaysinmyroom on January 24, 2013 12:43:43 PM
How about rubber tires?  They are free and when I was researching for growing potatoes, they do not leach and harm the veggies or the soil...you can get them pretty much free at a tire place...I got about 10 of them for growing plants, but if you sort of dug them into the terraces, they would hold back your soil...

I understand the high cost of other materials...our old retaining wall that is basically keeping our house and yard from falling over the cliff is going to cost over $30,000 to rebuild... :(...we are looking to have some steel braces put in for about half that

Title: Re: 12 crafty things for ME along 2013!
Post by: yoopidou on January 24, 2013 04:32:31 PM
Thanks for the tires idea. I could put one plant in each tire  and add some better soil in the tire than my clay-ish backyard soil. I would not have to redo the terraces very often, that's what I like best! I am going to look around for tires, maybe it is easier to find than wood pallets.

$30.000! That's really expensive. Maybe you live on top of a very steep cliff ?

Here is my list:

1. apron
2. denim skirt
3. pinafore dress form Angela Kane (http://www.angelakane.com/ak_for_visitors_zone/current_free_pattern.html)
4. skirt inspired by that (http://www.flamingotoes.com/2012/06/buttons-and-frills-knockoff-skirt/) tutorial
5. e-reader case
6. Fleece jacket
7. Serger cover

I do have the supplies for everthing that's written in orange.

good idea to mark your supplies silk81!
Well, I allways get excited over a new project and buy the supplies and then they sit on the shelves forever.
I bought everthing for the dress over two years ago. Shortly afterwards I was pregnant with #2 and then I had to get my pre prengancy weight back. And the fabric is still waiting.

I think I should be in this as most of my 50 things are for me :).

I spend, spend, spend far too much on clothes and fabric and yarn, so I am trying to de-stash and stop buying.

I made this in Jan already:
It truly looks less wonky on me than it does on Elsa, but still needs the zip redoing.  Was a re-con from an old jumper of oh's.

Again, this looks better when I have less layers on and am not standing like a numpty!!! And I have finished it off more since then.

Today, I am making a dress from a pattern I have had hanging around and some flowery fabric I bought last summer.  Best get back to it!!!!

Thanks Yoopidou & Alteredmommy.

The dress is a ViolentJayne pattern.

Generally, I have a wandering list of "want to do's" that keep getting usurped by the "in the moment" makes!!

But looking at my fabric stash...

1. Flowery dress, & skirt because there will be enough fabric left over!!
2. Silk patterned wide leg trousers
3. maxi skirt
4. Finish knitted jumper
.....

I will add as I go along

Yay here is my first project! I ended up doing the tampon bag first cus it's something that is quick and easy and it was fun to make. I am going to make one for a friend of mine too, just need to find a zipper for it. On to pictures now.

The fabric is actually suppose to be green but my camera turned it to the blueish colors.

Yay! I can finally update my list :) Here's the "headband" I made the other day while chatting with a friend. When I went to sew on the button, I found that it's actually too long for a headband so now it's a cute necklace/scarfy thing.

Also, last night I got motivated and covered these little lampshades with fabric. I've had these for a while! They aren't perfect, but they'll do for now. I like how the light looks different shining through each side.

Thank you for the comments about the dragon - he (definitely a 'he') survived the drying process, and should have been fired over the weekend, so Thursday night I may be able to glaze him  ;D

Love the shark week pouch! Luckily, since having the implant fitted after DS2 was born, I don't have a need, but if I did I would so be nicking that idea!!

I figure this counts as crafting for me.... Maybe?  It's homework, and it's pretty much to my benefit, even if it doesn't end up something else.

I've been tackling llama fluff as part of the Master Spinners program.

Yikes, I haven't checked in here and I am way behind on the conversations!
How about rubber tires?  They are free and when I was researching for growing potatoes, they do not leach and harm the veggies or the soil...you can get them pretty much free at a tire place...I got about 10 of them for growing plants, but if you sort of dug them into the terraces, they would hold back your soil...
I think that's an awesome idea, and something you could really get creative with. People already make tire planters, where you cut open and flare out the top and paint them, etc. You could paint them and stack them into a retaining wall, fill them with soil and plants, or you could make a stepped terrace out of them. I think painting them all funky would be so fun! I just did a quick search and found an awesome tutorial to make something like that.

Thank you everyone!  I can't remember who all said what, but the answers are as follows:  Caramel!  Yes that's a good color to call it;  yummy is a perfectly good adjective for yarn;  there's only 29 yards, 10 of it needs to be handed in, and the remainder needs to be crocheted into a swatch.

There are so many pretty knits popping up!  It's all gorgeous!

Whew, ok so now that I caught up with everyone's posts....so many lovely yarny things, now I want to knit again.

I have a dance performance tomorrow, so instead of wearing the same ol' stuff, I've been working on a new costume. I made a new halter top, a huge feather fascinator, and a pair of pantaloons. I haven't made any new costuming in quite a while, so I'm excited to have something different tomorrow! Once I'm all dolled up I'll post pictures. :)

I just found this thread, count me in! I was getting ready to "fake join" a swap and saw that that craftalong hasn't been active for several months. so this is perfect! I've recently become active in a few crochetalongs on ravelry - a shoulder wrap along and a wearables. So I may add some of those to my list as time goes on. I'm going to start small, but it will be an adventurous year in crocheting! All for ME!!

1. Add to yarn stash  ;D (1/31)
1.5 Take an online art class (art journal maybe?).
2. Make a tiny house for me.
3. Make a prayer flag for me.
4. Crochet first shawl (Snowdrop Shawl) for me. (started)
5. Crochet first sweater (pattern and yarn chosen).
6. Crochet first pair of socks
7. Crochet blocks for lap blanket (0 blocks so far)
8. Quilted Kindle cover (already finished crocheted version).
9. Under the sea wall art (either crocheted or fabric/multi media).
10. Tiered/pieced skirt.
11. Wrap around skirt.
12. Sewing machine cover.
13. Yoga bag.

Numbers 8-13 have been moving to the end of the list for a year or two. Maybe this year?!

I`ve managed to part way complete my level 2 final project!  All the wool is combed. now I need to blend it with silk, spin it and turn it into something.... I have 2 plans. either a shawlette/scarflette or a lacey book mark I found on Rav.  If anyone has a pattern or knows where to find a pattern for a tip up triangle shawl, that uses a lace pattern, and possibly lace yarn - but not much yarn, since I`ve only got 1 ounce of fibre to play with, I`d really appreciate if you could point me to it!

Erm... I guess I casted on the No-Fuss Shade-Loving Shawl with knit picks chroma fingering in the Galapagos colorway today... Just needed something to knit while in the car and out and about.  Almost 40 rows in already. Each row gets 4 stitches bigger, so the next 40 rows are going to take a lot longer.  But I have 2 balls of this yarn... I might just keep knitting until they are both gone....

This is the link, but its a long color run self striping sort of yarn.  It's turquoise, greens and some shades in between.
http://www.knitpicks.com/yarns/Chroma_Fingering_Sock_Yarn__D5420203.html

You can find the swatch in the 5th row at the end. There are a lot of color ways in this yarn, but that one screamed out to me.  I bought it because it was pretty. I had no plans at the time, but now I'm excited to see how it works up in this pattern.

Thanks everyone!
Hey that galapagos yarn matches my costume...I've been hooked on teals and greens lately. I can't seem to escape it, it's almost embarrassing when I pack for a weekend. My clothes, jammies, embroidery projects...Even my underwear and socks have it. Now my costuming too. LOL

I'm in the middle of a painting for my daughter's bedroom, three squirrels having a tea party. I keep wanting to paint but it's either late and I'm exhausted, or my son is driving me up a wall with cabin fever. I can usually set him up to paint at his easel next to me, but he doesn't want to paint as long as me and ends up getting into my box of thread or dumping out the fabric bin. He's going to grandma's tomorrow, so maybe I can paint while the baby naps.

Has anyone ever painted a yoga mat?  I have a plain blue one that kind of irritates me when I see all the pretty ones out there.  But as there isn't anything wrong with it (and honestly I don't do yoga as much as I should or would like to) I'm thinking of stencilling it up myself.

hopefully I can get some projects done in the next week, I have a number of thing I would like to make myself before our trip to Mexico the first week of March.  time is running out....

Looks like you can...

http://healthyliving.azcentral.com/paint-yoga-mat-12603.html

I hope you show it off if you do paint it! I never would have thought of that.

I didn't do yoga as much as I liked until I discovered http://www.doyogawithme.com. Figi McAlpine is AMAZING. I love her classes. And I feel like I'm getting better at certain poses, not stagnant like with typical videos. Just the right amount of challenge. I still miss my formal classes, and will one day return to them. But until then, I'm going to work my way up to Fiji's Power and Precision class.

had fun at my felt class yesterday and made these:

The first one started out as a rectangle of fabric which I then felted small pieces of wool too. I didn't realise (or even think about the effect of) putting the wool diagonally would distort the fabric, but love the way it has come out :)

The second one was a straight forward flat piece of hand felt made with maroon, lime and teal coloured wool, which was folded then steamed in the microwave to set the folds.

(Dragon survived the firing process and is all ready to be glazed next week)

I bought more fabric for me:)  But I don't plan to use it until May/June.

I plan to finish the too small pants and a blouse to put away for a "goal met" gift bag to myself.

Wow, beautiful dance costume, lunamadre!
Thank you!

mini mum, what are you planning on doing with the felt pieces? The one piece reminds me of a dragon wing :D

I made a Christmas decoration for myself, I know, weird time to do it....but I tend to not think of making anything Christmasy until the holidays and I"m too busy. I set aside my tree skirt instead of storing it, because I wanted to upcycle it into some sort of garland or bunting. I finished it but haven't taken pictures yet.

How does everyone keep track of their progress? Do I go back to my original list and edit it? Or do I copy and paste an updated list here in the discussion?

Well, I'm partway finished my final project! Here's the yarn all spun up.  Now, do I dye it too? And I don't think I'll be able to find a triangle shawl that starts from the tip that is a lace pattern, I'm thinking a leaf motif or something, so maybe a single fingerless glove?  Anyway.  Here it is!

Title: Re: 12 crafty things for ME along 2013!
Post by: Belladune on February 22, 2013 10:09:04 AM
It's a meager 125 yards. And I need to keep a 10 yard sample aside. so, it's not going to make much at all.... but it's so pretty! I just weighed it. it's .68 oz.... not much at all...

Bella--I think is is more like 120 but it can be made shorter...I think because of the lace pattern, it does not take a lot of yarn...I want to make it using leftover yarn from other projects...I think it would be great for summer to add some style to tank tops!

Jumping in to join the fun, even though 2 months are gone in the year.  This ME Bucket List craftalong is an awesome idea!  I've been hesitant to join since I can't post pics - getting the images from camera to comp, the little card thingy won't do its thing - but I'll try with phone-to-email.  Everyone's projects look fantastic!

... 1. Replace the huge bowed picture window (12' wide x 6' tall and that was pulling downward and about to drag the outer wall with it) -  What an adventure that was. Finally accomplished on New Years Eve 2014.  Yes, I am slow.
... 2. "V" Scarf dickie ---March/ pg.24
... 3. Make butterscotch blondies -- accomplished this 6/2015!
... 4. Purse/tote (purse craftalong) -- made a Mom Brag Bag out of son's band tee shirt
... 5. Reusable shopping bag from recycled pillow case
... 6. headband/ear warmer
... 7. Gift bow from sheet music (special remembrance project)
... 8. Apron... pg 30
... 9. Shrug
... 10. Scarf to match coat
... 11. Eyeglass case large enough for sunglasses ... large enough for curved shades; made in 2019 HPC
... 12. Stain new kitchen cupboards - May

03/01 **Note** Many thanks to my wonderful husband for his patience and tech skills, helping to get the pics uploaded!

Completed Projects
Shrug/Bolero -from a bargain shirt that was way too big but too nice to discard.  I added velcro for a more finished look.

Closeup of the lace trim:

Repurposed pillowcase into a shopping tote:  (Made a couple weeks ago and used diligently since then!  My apologies for the wrinkles.)

I generally use double-sided tape or tape runners, especially if I'm working with cardstock.

I used the stitch pattern from Hermione's Everyday Socks (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/hermiones-everyday-socks) (on Ravelry), but then did my usual cast on 60, heel that fits me well and toe decreases.

Thanks for the compliments, everyone! :D

It's Shadowmere, the horse your character can get from Lucien Lachance in TES IV: Oblivion. I figured I would make him for my Dunmer doll while I'm waiting to get to the craft shop to pic up a needle to root her hair.

Minimum, I thought the hearts were 8 to 10 inches high. Wow, that's big. Did you soak the willows in water first?

FreakieGeekie, it's hard to imagine the Barbie horse it once was. Good job altering it to your taste. And now, I wonder about Oblivion. Is it a book, a movie, a game?

This isn't too exciting but it is something I wanted to make since January. We are writing down everything good that happens in 2013 and on New Year's Eve, over dinner we are going to read all the good things that happen to us throughout the year. I think I want to add some glitter to the girl on the jar.

Also, I made a quick garland for our mantle. I had all the green pottery and books  so not too much work.  :D

Thanx guys - I really had fun with the willow weaving!

The tutor supplied the willow. Apparently preparing it is an artform in itself! She had the willow wands wrapped in wet cloths, but they are soaked before that and if they dry out while you are working them (for instance if you pull a handful out, then stop and have a cuppa) they loose the flexibility and are no good.

Size wise I just measured them and they are nearer 20" than 30" :-[. It is actually easier to work bigger as the willow doesn't want to flex into small shapes, and kinks which isn't good, apparently.

Love the 'Good Times' glass - hope it is full to overflowing by the end of the year :D

On Tuesday I went to my local quilt shops Prairie Women club and this months handout was for hexagons. So I have decided that I really like making these and am going to make the quilt that we got the pattern for. I need to make 247 1" hexagons and the finished size will be 27 1/2" x 28 3/4". I don't plan on finishing it all this year just get all the hexagons done and get a couple of rows taken care of.
Here are all the ones I have done so far.

And here are my favorites.

Skatergirl, that's a fantastic project. 247 hexagons? This dazzles my mind!

1 inch hexagons? That's so tiny! That sure will keep you busy.

I am wondering about these hexagons? What do you have to do to make them? Cut them for sure, but do you have to fold the sides, or something else? I'd like to see the front and the back of one hexagon. And how will you attach them together?

The hexagons are 1 inch on each side so they are not super tiny. You use a thicker paper, like card stock. My mom bought the pre-cut hexagons from www.paperpieces.com at the quilt shop. My mom likes to cut squares about 2 1/2 inches, I like to cut mine at 3 inches. I think I will get my camera and take some in progress shots.

Title: Re: 12 crafty things for ME along 2013!
Post by: skatergirl1007 on March 09, 2013 05:57:01 AM
First the paper does not come with the hole in the middle. I used a hole punch to do that so I would not have to pin through the paper and contort the paper. Also I do not stitch through the paper. You can but I just stitch the fabric. So the first picture is where I have trimmed the fabric to between 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch around all the sides.

Then you pick which side to start on and fold it over. Now I go counter clock-wise but you could go the other way. So I then turn the hexie to the left and fold the next side down. So that corner will look like it is a metered corner. I then take a few stitches. Oh and you will want to knot your thread here.

Once you get to the end you just take 4 to 5 stitches and I don't knot my thread. Part of the reason is that if I want to take out these stitches I can do it more easily not knotting it.

Skatergirl, thanks for all the explanations and pictures. Now, I understand it better and see all the work it is just to create the hexagons.
I am eager to see your progress along the way.

Skatergirl, the hole in the middle of the background paper is pure genius! I've always hated English paper-piecing because the fabric would shift as I tried to stitch. Your method just makes so much more sense to me.

How adorable, Lunamadre. Are they British squirrels?
Ha! I don't know, I guess they could be! We have tons of squirrels here at my house, it's very woodsy. So I imagined this here in Erie, but I suppose they could be British as well. It makes their imagined conversation a little more charming. ;)

Lunamadre!  That's awesome!  Way way better then dogs playing poker. I love it!
lol! I'm making a painting for my son next, I was considering rabbits doing something. Maybe I should have them playing Old Maid, haha....
I added a bit more to my painting, I looked at my reference photos and realized I forgot their whiskers! So I added whiskers, a few minor details to the fur, and fixed the horizon line. (I realized later that it was wonky and it bothered me.) Then I hung it up in my daughter's room before I started overkilling it and getting too fussy. Thanks everyone. :)

Skatergirl, I've never done any quilting, but that looks interesting, although a bit maddening. I'm not sure if I would get addicted to it or frustrated! I can't wait to see more progress pics and see how it turns out.

Kittykill, that good times jar is such a great idea, especially reading it on New Year's. What a nice tradition! I started a gratitude journal over the summer and loved it. Once I had my baby in September it got kind of forgotten, I should really get back into it. I was surprised how much more "present" it made me in everyday life, and more positive.

I can't believe I'm actually on the monthly schedule, 3 projects done and it's March! Wait a minute. Does that mean we're actually a quarter of the way through the year already???

What a cute painting!  Squirrels having tea makes me smile!

skatergirl--what can I say?  Such a simple thing like a hole punched in the paper sure makes things easier...it was a "duh" moment for me...I am doing hexxies with some of my food fabric collection...it is my first time making them but it has been a while since I started and I have no memory of how I am doing it...hopefully I will remember your trick when I start it up again this spring!

Wow, such creativity in here!  It is inspiring to hang with you multitalented ladies :)

My craft for March:  I am tickled pink with this cowl/ dickie/ scarf/ fabric necklace that I've made from a sweater.  It satisfies my craving for a scarf that isn't bulky, repurposed an unused garment, and prettifies (new word! lol) a plain top with a touch of ruffling.

*Runs to strike out a craft in my list posted somewhere on a previous page... :)

I finished my duffel bag, the fabric's a little to delicate for the original purpose, so I plan to make another one with some duck canvas I bought today.

I think tomorrow I might make myself a new spring blouse.

I've gotten about 1/2 way through my scarf!  finally!!  I hope to get farther along tonight.  I know I wont finish it, since it takes me 1.5 hours for 2 rows ::)

JS, Cute warm fabric "necklace". It does perk any sweater.

Belladune, your scarf seems like a lot of work. I hope to see the results soon.

It's a really simple lace pattern, but I'm so afraid of screwing it up I check back every 10 stitches to make sure I'm not yarning over where i shouldn't. ::)  But the results will be great. I will have a FO that is perfect, instead of one I look at and go  "oh, there's a mistake. .. and another... and another...."  Like the shawl I did last year....

You are smart to be careful, Belladune...lace is nearly impossible to frog and fix...I would rather be slow and deliberate than to try to go back and fix it!  I have a few lace pieces where I see each mistake, but no one else seems to notice...:D  I understand... :D

I learned the hard way, even with a life line in place, frogging lace sucks.

(you know, if I was to say that just about anywhere else, no one would know what I was talking about. I almost want to put that as a status update on facebook, just to see if I get any puzzled responses :D )

Belladune, you're right to go slow. It's better to have a wonderful lace creation later than an half-baked one sooner.

There is a woman in town that is going to teach a rag quilt class.  It's on Wednesday.  It's perfect, because that's the quilt I want to make with all my scrap denim and the old receiving blankets.  total win, as I think we have the space for 3 hours every wednesday. I could finish my quilt by the summer time!

Ooh a quilting class would be fun. The only one I've seen in my area was for one day and it was $60 for two or three hours. For that much, I'll teach myself.

Wow! I had no idea! I always wondered about that when people do one of a kinds. Thanks for the tutorial!

After Easter we get ready for what we like to call "Playa de Pedersen" basically I change everything over to a tiki/beach theme(which isn't too hard since we have a tiki bar). I pull out all kinds of beach stuff for the house and pray for sunshine.  :D

I like to decorate the mantle for 4th of July too.

Alteredmommy, I haven't been junking in a while. I used to go all the time with my grandma though.

Estate sales are gold mines. So are flea markets and garage sales. I found a bolt of fabric that had three yards on it at a garage sale. I paid $2 for it.
Old stuff is often nicer than newer stuff.

You ladies are multitalented and every project in this thread has me wanting to do more.  Can't say that I've ever seen knit intestines- creative!
I made a flirty apron out of a skirt with a gorgeous brocade design.  No pattern; just my own idea and basic skill level.

Top and back shots- The back part of the skirt was used to make the apron top.

My youngest kidlet was drafted to model the apron:

Very cute apron and top. I need to work on my zombie stuff only a week left. I need to find some time to work on some things for myself but I have a lot of stuff for school. I need to write three story things for a creative writing class and one big paper needs to be finished for my regional geography class. oooh gory.
Remember my little scarf? For my final project?  Yeah.  I frogged it. I hated it. Mostly because I was so frustrated with the video I chose to teach me the open cast on. It was bunk.  I left my very first ever youtube comment on it.  It made me that frustrated.  No one deserves that kind of frustration... I couldn't figure out what were live stitches and to hell with wrecking a perfectly good scarf with a crappy cast off.  I MAY cast on again, with a regular long tail cast on maybe. Or if I do a provisional cast on, I'll do the crocheted one I learned last year.  Or just card up some lovely merino I have, and make a toque. or slippers.
As to my other projects, yeah... I don't think I've started any... :-\ Though Maybe I'll make a quick and easy one, like the magnetized curtain for the front door window.

Oh, I'm knitting.  Casting on is the way you put the yarn onto the needles.  There are many many many methods.  Long tail is one of my favourite.  But it's really hard to explain, without showing you.  If you want I can dig up a video.
It's okay.  Just a part of learning and such.

cool zombie make-up!  You still have to make the knitted intestines for some future thing... :D

love the March cake!

ha ha the t-shirt stenciling is really funny...I love Daryl...and cross-bows

belladune--sorry you got so frustrated with your knitting!  Some of those youtube videos are just awful but no one ever tells the person so they keep on making crappy ones! :D

I use different cast-ons depending on the project...long tail is my favorite except when there are a zillion stitches to cast on and I run out of tail... ;)...I am practicing a better cast on for socks since they have to be stretchier than most things...good luck finding a project for your lovely yarn!

Cute cake! I have a new project starting at some point soon. I get this email that has all kinds of different craft news and one of them was a thing talking about a Doctor Who stitch along.

skatergirl1007--I purchased about 4 yards of Dr. Who blue to make a quilt "someday"...the stitchalong sounds like a fun way to get a quilt block at a leisurely pace!  Thanks for the link!

Each and every project mentioned in this thread has my wish list growing.  Where else can I troll a thread containing such diverse talents (aside from the combined rest of this board of course lol)?!  The creativity is awesome - dollmakers who painstakingly insert itty bitty hairs into scalps, quilt artists who cut up perfectly good fabric in order to sew it back together, spinners, stencilers, recyclers, ... the list is endless.  It is exciting and inspiring.

My ME-list might be changing somewhat.  You see, there is a house that was sitting all empty and abandoned.   Roomy, with a bit of yard for the kidlets, not in the city, and in need of TLC.  After a lengthy buying process, we became official owners and have begun the task (tasks!  many, many tasks!) of renovating.  At the moment there are no "after" pics but there are some "befores."   Without further ado, please meet my new project:

This bowed window is 12 feet wide by 6 feet tall.  It cannot be replaced because window manufacturers only make up to 117 inches wide these days.  In order to replace, it would need modified into multiple smaller sized windows grouped together.

We are doing the kitchen walls in a sort of minty retro-ish green.  We love the woodwork of the stairs and are trying to match the cupboard stain to the golden oak of the stairs.

These are bedroom pics, before the carpet was pulled up.  We planned to paint and replace the carpet.

However, we were thrilled to discover beautiful hardwood floors underneath the carpet!  Gorgeous, thick, real hardwood floors - not prefabricated layment or fancy, easy care stuff.  Pics to follow soon.  And work.  Lots and lots of work.

Suggestions appreciated.  Thanks for looking :)

Looks like a lot of work, but you will make it your own!

How lucky to have good hardwood floors underneath!

The huge window is wonderful...we have a similar one that is so energy inefficient but too costly to replace right now...

Can't wait to see your largest WIP ever :D turn into finished projects!  Good luck and have fun.

Congratulations on your new house! I think matching your stairs and kitchen cabinetry stains will look great.
Suggestion: insulated curtains for your bay window. If a rod can't be found that's the right size, consider using Velcro to hang panels or Roman blinds in each section of the window, then use a rod across the top of the molding to cover the expanse. That's a great view, so I'm sure you don't want to block it, but it's also going to allow a lot of heat loss. Being able to cover the window with some form of insulation (even if only at night), should help a lot.

Let us know how things are going. Love looking at other people's renovations.

Thank you, ladies, for the encouragement and good wishes!  kbrison, your velcro suggestion for the window coverings is brilliant.  I forgot to explain how such a huge project could possibly be befitting for a ME-along.  Our current home is roughly 900 sq ft, with no real claimable space for sewing and crafting.  The routine goes something like this: give kidlets breakfast at dining room table, shoo them off to school, get out a project, spread it out on the table, clear everything off the table when school lets out so kids can do homework at the table, serve dinner and clear, drag out the project, move it so laundry can be folded, ...  lather, rinse, repeat... Hubby heard an earful about my wanting a house with more rooms than what we have now.  Our realtor patiently showed us several places before this one.  I cashed in my meager retirement to buy it.  My very own space, with my name titled first on the deed, since it is "mine."  Selfish? Absolutely.  Deserved?  You betcha! lol

Here is a look at the stained kitchen cabinets and paint color:

Proper pics will be posted when everything is done.
(Kitchen before:

Hubby was thrilled when he pulled up the carpet and discovered those wonderful hardwood floors:

Sometimes the magnitude of work needed seems overwhelming.  We are trying to be patient and prioritize the projects.  Hopefully things won't be too costly.  Oh guess what- the neighbors think that the detached garage is encroaching on their property by ten feet. *sigh*
I hope all of you are having an awesome day!

kbrison--what a wonderful energy saving idea!  I have clear plastic shrink wrap on my huge window but it is a pain each year and just plain ugly!

JS--check with your realtor re: garage...a survey of the property should have been done and marked the boundaries of your property...plus, if the garage was existing for several years and the neighbors never said anything, you might have rights for an easement use...people need to pay attention to what neighbors are doing because if you "allow" someone to use your property, they can have a case to continue using it.

We had a similar issue...the neighbor next door mowed about 20 feet into our property when we purchased...our realtor told us to write a nice thank you note but to mow it ourselves at least once a year...glad we did because he then tried to put in a concrete pad to put his swimming pool shed on it...had we not "reclaimed" our property, he would have been allowed to do it!

Beautiful hardwood floor and house. Your kitchen will be bright and sunny with this beautiful green. I hope you can check easily if the garage is on the neighbors' property.

I am in a sewing phase. I have mostly fixed holes, sewn again what went undone, added straps, changed old elastic waistbands on my clothes. I am working on a few dresses too.

Great work so far!!  It's great that you took it all into your own hands and got the house YOU really wanted!  I've never done the house hunting thing, we just took what was available for rent.... then turned around and bought it when they wanted to sell it.  It's worked so far, but I still dream up my dream house frequently!

I've decided to cast on again with that yarn, and that same scarf.  Just this time, I'm going to use a crochet cast on with a very thick yarn.  and that should work, I think.  knitknitknit!

I attended a Scrapbook Expo in Texas earlier this month. Started this smash book there, but just finished it this weekend while camping at the lake. It's a kit from Buttonfarmclub.com, so can't show more photos because of copyright issues.

Then I also took a class at the Expo on making pop-up cards, so these are my finished cards. Again no interior shots because of copyrights. Most of them are not my usual style and none of them are color combos I'd normally use, but I was more interested in learning techniques than in maintaining my personal style.

Nice!  I think kits are a great jumping off point to try something new or to learn techniques...then you can take that and do projects in your own style!

You can still take a kit and give it a bit of your own...lovely cards, kbrison!

Spent most of yesterday sitting in a hospital waiting room while my friend underwent surgery, so had plenty of time to crochet. Made this market bag. That button really sets off that hat!  You look adorable in it! (and you look like such a youngster!)

I also love the curtain idea...magnets on steel doors! Genius!

Well, Belladune, I too would easily give you ten years less! You're darn lucky! ;)

The yarn is lovely. Will it change color when you wash it? And if you want to dye it, would you dye the roving before spinning or the yarn after?

Title: Re: 12 crafty things for ME along 2013!
Post by: Belladune on August 13, 2013 02:08:38 PM
The yarn is the color it will be, a lovely natural shetland brown. And if was to dye, it would depend on the situation.  Sometimes its nice spin colours, and other times it's nice to wait!

Thanks for the answer. I didn't even know sheep could be brown. To me, they were beige, whitish or black. Suddenly, the colors of older Norwegian style sweaters makes a lot of sense. Anyway, it's a lovely yarn.

These three beach stitches are so great, I love them all, but the Woody is my favorite, I've always had a thing for station wagons... is that weird? Your stitching is neat as a pin, lady!

Finished a shawl that I started several months ago. Another WIP done!!! Half the yarn was a gift from the MYB Swap with Hayleylujah. The other half of the yarn took several months to locate. Kept finding the right yarn but the wrong color. Frustrating!

Yes, they used a stitch that was new to me, the extended single crochet, for the hand portion. Used a free pattern I found on-line: Brooklyn Fingerless Mitts. It was easy to adapt to my larger wrist and hand size and the stitch reminds me of knit lace stitches.

They're for inside. My family likes much colder indoor temps than my hands or feet can stand. Socks and slippers take care of the feet issue, but my hands were still a problem. That's why I decided to make these - - purely self-defense! :)

Belladune - they really didn't take very long or require much concentration. They're simple enough that I was able to crochet them in just a couple of hours of evening tv watching with the family.

Kudos to those of you making for yourselves!  I did finish a painting for myself and am working on another but upon looking at my list have not accomplished anything else off it.  perhaps this should be the summer of getting down to crafting for meeeeee ;D

Obviously this may need to be a longer than one year project.

Title: Re: 12 crafty things for ME along 2013!
Post by: JS on June 24, 2015 05:15:44 PM
Glad you two are making progress and are not giving up! :)  Antidigger I hope you find that big table soon.  Alteredmommy it's great that you have your finished painting.

We had a few things sidetrack our crafting plans.  Our huge picture window that bows outward (loved that view) was so heavy that it was falling outward/downward and pulling the wall with it.  Replacing it became a higher priority.  The size made things tricky, since that size is no longer made (gimongous x huge ... 12 feet wide by 6 feet tall).  A special custom unit frame had to be ordered that contains 3 smaller windows.  The soonest it could be installed was on New Years Eve.  Imagine having a huge hole in the living room wall, the size of 2 open garage doors during the holidays!  Luckily the weather wasn't as bitter at that point.

This is before: (taken when we first bought the house-- the window seat is almost 2 feet deep)

After (still a work in progress, as trim is needed):

In addition, DH had a stroke in March that paralyzed his left side.  He has since recovered most of his strength with a few residuals.  Priorities and ways of doing things have changed.  I've been able to make a few crafty items and am trying to destash as I have several totes filled with fabric.   Life is good, God is awesome! :)

To make a long story short, I'm not done with my list lol

2. Blanket from old jeans and old receiving blankets (i`ve got a lovely stack of squares going!)
3. Dress from old bed spread
10. One of those plastic bag holder thingies....
maybe, if I'm lucky I'll have time!!

Well crafting for oneself is harder than anticipated so I've taken the year off and hope that we continue to add to our lists of things we gift ourselves.  Even if it takes a few years ;D

I made a tote bag for myself!  As soon as my phone charges up, I'll get some photos.  I'm uber excited about it because it is from my band geek son's band tee shirt from last year (point for recycling), plus I laminated it with iron-on waterproof Heat-n-Bond (point for trying something new).  It also has a zipper pocket that was violated out of an old purse.

I also made a bingo game for the upcoming family reunion.  Instead of the usual numbers on the game boards, there are things associated with the family and with reunions.  DH's father was one of 12 kids.  Each of those names, plus their parents' names, are on the cards... along with other relatives, picnic foods, activities, and locations of some of the families.  It's a blast to play and we look forward to it.  During our move I lost the other set and had to make this new one.
Tip: jigsaw puzzle pieces work well for bingo markers!  Not hard to find a 1500 piece puzzle at a yard sale, and it doesn't matter if there are pieces missing.

My recycled band geek tee tote bag with wipeoffable laminate:

I like that I can set this bag down and not worry about mud getting on it.

A peek at the inside zipper pocket (sorry for the bad pic, I can't hold, aim, and click at the same time lol):

I used part of an old towel for the handle.
It is far from perfect but was a great learning experience and I'm tickled with the result :)

Part of a towel for the handle!!! Excellent and an idea I am going to file for future use!

The bag turned out great...I have wondered about the heat bond on fabric...seems to work well!

Also, what a fun way to get the family involved at the reunions! Family BINGO!

I was just thinking I need a craftalong like this.

I have no problem crafting for swaps or people I know, but even though my list of things to make for myself is HUGE when I try to craft I'm just like "Nooo I don't want to work on that today" , or "Meh, I'm not feeling this craft right now" even though I've been thinking about making it all day!!!

Anyone wanting to revive the thread?

lol I think the thread died because we all hate crafting for ourselves!

Here is a list of things I really need to craft for myself:

Skull knit hoodie
red tunic
black knit skirt
summer robe
paper bead Boho jewelry
Shawl

Spread the word!  Craft for ourselves! ;D

I think changing the name is a good idea. Maybe that's because I never did hit the goal of 12 items.  :-\

My "Make for Myself" list:
1. the black boucle hat to match the scarf I made
2. finish a quilt for me --- any of the gadzillion I've started
3. microwave bowl holders - - - I was wishing for some just last night
4. potholders - - - mine are getting so grungy and worn
5. the scarf I started months ago
6. a cream colored cowl just because I want to try a new pattern using super bulky yarn

I made the mistake of making a couple bowl cozies for a family member, now everyone wants one and I hate making a bunch of one thing. I have to switch up what craft I'm doing a lot because I get bored quickly. That's why I know so many crafts. Hah

I can't remember what I wanted to craft when I first came around and found this craft along, I have quite a list though.

I'm limiting the crafts for me to only things I want for me, not things I want to do /make for the house, anything that is useful, or any large projects that take up a lot of time. I'm thinking I'm going to start with the items that I have screenshot on my phone. I have tons of pictures of things I'd like to have, but haven't bought because "hey i could make that!".

Title: Re: Crafting for ME along!

Oh this popped up in my feed again! ;D

I usually end up giving away things I've made for myself because someone liked it. For example, I crocheted a black hat and applique of Deadpool's logo, which I sewed to the hat, for myself and wound up giving it to one of my fiance's friends for his birthday because he really liked it. And the Zero amigurumi I made for myself is going to be given to Lucius when he's older.

I have a Monster High gargoyle boy custom that I started two years ago that was meant to be for me. His face is painted (I went with a simple face up) and sealed so all I have to do is design an outfit for him then sew it up but I've yet to do it :P After I finish my current sewing project (pj pants for my fiance), I think I'm going to make an attempt at drawing up an outfit for him.

Hello everyone!  It's been a busy year.  Hopefully you all are well.

My new list, for me:

Sew a couple skorts for summer.
Make a topsy turvy doll.  I've never made one and they look like a fun challenge.
Upcycle some items into hand warmers, neckwear/scarves.
Get working on  the quilt I've had in mind - out of old jeans and shirts.

I wanted to craft tonight but wasn't sure what to make. I started making a shirt that's on my lists but the iron on vinyl didn't cut as clean as it should have and I ruined the last bit that I had.

I finished the felt badges last night for the swap and was still kind of itching to make another.

So I'm proud to say, I have made myself something!!

I did a little felt badge for myself! Baby Perry the Platypus! One of my favorite cartoon characters! Yay. He's only about 3in long.

Too cute!  So tiny and nicely stitched!

I love working with felt!

I really really really need a summer robe.  I have had the fabric (100% cotton that I purchased in Japan) for a few years!  I even have the pattern pinned out on it...I will see how this weekend goes...if it rains, I can't be outside in the garden, so, it might be a good sewing weekend!

I have been trying to find cute things to wear to the gym that is not a name brand sports hoodie...I feel like everyone in the gym sort of look alike with matching black yoga pants, etc.  I have a vision in my head for my personal gym outfits so I bought a bunch of "unusual" knits. ;D

I love seeing the creativity in here.  Every project has that perfect personal touch.

I have a pair of shorts made ... now to add the skort part.  I think I'll add a skirt overlay instead of a front flap.

Title: Re: Crafting for ME along!

oh...I love skorts but can never find any that I like...I can wear them to work...what kind of fabric do you use?  I have some stretch denim that might be good for those...I am into comfort!

Title: Re: Crafting for ME along!
Post by: JS on June 22, 2016 11:30:40 AM
The stretch denim would be perfect for skorts.  You're lucky to be able to wear them to work.  The one I am working on now is a summery floral cotton print.  I like the skorts that have a skirt going the whole way around as opposed to the sarong flap type.  Patterns for it are scarce.  It sounds like a simple add-the-skirt-on-top thing but I haven't done one before and would like to reference a pattern for reassurance.  So... i'll wing it and see how it goes! :)

I also like the more wrap around style...I will see if I have a pattern already...I used to make them when I was in high school, too!

I liked those ghetto curtains!  ;D Which would take more effort: making curtains or just making another quilt to take the place of the current curtain one? I'd go with easy, whichever it might be. The rest of the projects sound great!

Oh man, that blanket is worth at least a dozen sets of curtains in effort at least! I love it, as a blanket though :D.

CLM--do you remember that beautiful matryoshka doll fabric you sent me a few years ago?

Well, I made myself the cutest tunic top EVER with it!!!!  I have not sewn clothes in years but now I am on a roll...I have several more things just for me in the works...

I had to make a tank for underneath since the fabric was sheer, but I had the perfect jersey piece in my stash!  I almost blew it, though...I forgot that the jersey was wool and when I washed it, I almost felted it!  It is a bit snug, but that is great because I had made it too big anyway!  I can't wait for it to get a bit cooler to wear...I'll take a picture of it on the hanger and then add one with me wearing it later...

YAY!!!!  Also, you know it goes perfectly with the matching necklace you made....

I was going to make myself a purse but my hubby found a cool one and bought it for me (he showed me first). It was $5 so I couldn't say no.

I need a wallet and possibly a bigger purse (I like keeping random things with me that won't fit in my tiny purse) so I may make those for myself soon.
If I can find the time, that is.

I need microwave bowl covers...I have burned my fingers once too often...grrrr...

I also need to make an all purpose dress for myself to wear to various weddings and other "formal" events that sweats or leggings would just not be appropriate! ;D

I recently lost my brand new sunglasses case...fortunately, the sunglasses were just thrown in my purse, so I did not lost those...I didn't really like the case that much, so hope someone is enjoying it! I need a new one...

And, I got three new pairs of boots this past winter and would like to figure out a way to store them nicely...maybe some sort of fabric bag...

Oops, I haven't been keeping up here. I've made quite a few things for myself:
Foam stamps, yoga mat bag, lined project baskets, prayer flags (made months ago but only hung up now), piano bench cushion cover, sunglasses case, and a wrench roll.

I'm still working on the swap item I'd like to have kept for myself, a little progress but so busy with all the summer things it's hard to set aside time.

I'm still waiting to see that matrioshka shirt AIMR ;).

I am going to visit a tardis loving friend & want to bring a gift. Nice as that is, I'm not sure he'd appreciate a purse :D.

The thing I've done for myself lately is kitchen based. I made a huge whack of juice & lot of broth for a fast. I'm on the final day, day 7, & have lost a dozen lbs already. Mostly I did it to help kick coffee, wine & late night snacking but bonus benefits of shedding the winter weight, woo hoo!

I made a scarf for myself!!  I was given the pattern from my now-enemy-neighbor that I used to knit with...so I had put it away...then I decided it was my loss for not making it and I was being silly, so I made it. I have to block it yet, but then I can wear it outside so she can see it and not be able to ask about it...yeah, I am so mature...

It's great to read of all the projects happening in here.

I made a cowl neck warmer for myself and love it.  It is my version of a scarf (a simple tube shape, like a super large headband) and made of polar fleece.  As I've aged, wind on my neck has become more bothersome so this toasty windblocker suits my needs perfectly.  From top to bottom hem measures about ten inches.  Side to side is about 13 inches.  This one might be considered a huge stovepipe, but it folds over easily for double warmth (4 layers!) and it slides over a hoodie without constricting.   This is an easy project for those fleece remnant bits.

I am trying to think what I can make for myself before the end of the month!!!  I am on a FB page with some friends and my challenge is to make something each month just for me!!

Maybe I will make a new light robe for summer...I have some really pretty cotton fabric from Japan that I have been saving for...good grief, nearly 20 years!!!  Yeah...I better use it up...lol

That is a good idea. I have some lighter jammies, one set with a matching robe, that I just dislike. They are lovely, luxurious fabrics, organic bamboo etc, but do not look flattering. I am all about the ugly, comfy pj's but when the mood strikes to change it up now and then, what is the point of lovely bed wear if it doesn't look good on you?

I will make myself something to wear. I haven't done that in forever.

I want to make a tote bag for craft items/WIPs to keep in my vehicle to work on during those times away from home.

It's been a stressful week.  Son1 has been sick with fever and hugely swollen glands in his neck, jaw, and face.  Multiple doctor office visits, tests, meds, etc. with guesswork conclusion.  The doc exclaimed, "There is no name for what he has."  Son2 has the  same symptoms but in a different area (lower abdominal/groin) and couldn't walk.  I took Son2 to the emergency room - loads of tests, nothing conclusive, ruled out torsion/appendicitis, sent him home.  His condition worsened and we were back in the ER.  More tests.  The ER doctor wanted Son2 admitted, but the hospital no longer has a pediatric ward, hence no pediatric nurses, so the hospital refused to admit him.  Son2 is 16 and fully grown, btw.  The other area hospital was full.  The only hospital with an opening AND with a pediatric urologist was Akron Children's Hospital, 80 miles away.  (Awesome place if you ever have to go there.  Their burn unit is one of the top ranked in the nation, and ACH serves adults as well as children.)  Unfortunately I wasn't prepared for an out of town admission and had no extra clothing, craftables, etc.  Since I followed the ambulance, I didn't have the luxury of swinging by the homestead to grab a few things for either of us.   Once there, as a parent, I was not about to leave my child's side.  Thankfully DH was home with Son1 and able to take him to appointments.

Both boys are home now and being treated with (different) meds.  DS1's face is slowly reappearing, and DS2 can walk cowboy style with a cane.  They have a viral infection (a warped version of a new flu) that somehow manifested in their lymph nodes.  Their recovery will take time, possibly several weeks.  Their nicknames are "Goiter" and "Gonads" lol... not funny but funny.  DH is now experiencing swollen glands.

I have a blanket and flashlight in the trunk but need a tote for essentials - spare clothes, toiletries,  phone charger, busy-hand crafts, vodka

Oh my gosh, what a nightmare. I am so sorry to hear it. Apparently you have retained your sense of humour though, good for you! It's hard to smile when your kids are sick, when you find yourself cracking jokes you know there's light at the end of the tunnel at least :).

What can I send you for your travel crafting kit? I'd like to have a project to work on and making for someone else is a great motivator. What sort of crafts would you travel with, yarn, embroidery, sketching? Let me send you a little something, please :).

Wow..what a nightmare  indeed!  I think we are going to see all sorts of new viral diseases...I read that the melting of the ice caps and the warming of the other parts of the earth is releasing all sorts of strange and perhaps ancient viruses and bacteria!  I certainly hope they have identified what your boys have and share their info...it almost sounds like mumps x10!!

I am also on the bandwagon to help out...let us know what you need...you take care of your family...I have lots of totes and supplies...don't be shy!  CLM and kbrison are right...we are motivated by our wanting to help others if we can...

You people are truly amazing.  I deeply appreciate your well wishes, thoughtfulness, and kind offers.  It wasn't my intention to impose.  This place is "home."  Thank you for making it so cozy.

AIMR, the global warming issue hadn't occurred to me, but upon reflection it certainly makes sense!  All sorts of plant and animal life have been discovered in far depths and from eons ago.  Germs should be looked into as well.

The official diagnoses for DS2 are Mesenteric Lymphadenitis and Acute Epididymitis, caused by a virus.  Mumps, mono, STDs, and a list of other ailments were ruled out for both boys.  For DS1, the doctor reluctantly said that there is no name for his condition; it's something new, from a mutation of a new flu virus.  "Flu" is the closest dx that the doc could come up with for what caused DS1's Lymphadenitis.  Perhaps there is a newfangled version of Mumps, Lupus, or something.  I forgot to mention that we all had our flu shots less than 6 months ago.   Vaccines are up to date.  I went nuts trying to discover why both sons have the same symptoms - environment, food, shower gel, whatamIdoingwrong - but the medical professionals insist that a supergerm is to blame.  The common cold no longer exists.  Hopefully the information will help someone else.  School nurses are being asked by the state about flu cases in each school district.

craftylittlemonkey and kbrison and alwaysinmyroom,  it would be an honor to receive something from you.   An ice pack cover would help DS2.  Poor guy, he must sit on something supportive plus has heat/cold packs wrapped in pastel towels down there - awkward.  I will leave anything else to your discretion.

I am glad at least that they are able to treat your boys! What an awkward age to get such weird diseases!

We had a cousin who got some sort of weird disease after bitten by a new species of fly while he was in the amazon jungles...they had no name for it, other than a super virus of some sort...those kind of things scare me as I once wanted to be a virologist...

I hope that it is a once time thing...and that research is shared to spare others from the misery...I had the crude for over 5 weeks, so I know and am well aware that these diseases are getting stronger!

You, JS, need to take care of yourself for your family as well!

Title: Re: Crafting for ME along!
Post by: JS on March 03, 2018 01:20:55 PM
AIMR, I'm glad you are better now from your episode.  Five weeks sounds miserable.  What helped you when you were sick?  I hope your cousin was able to recover from that superfly-transmitted disease.  The Amazon must have been quite an adventure.

There are so many unknowns and newfangled illnesses these days.  There are times when DH is afraid to venture out to a family event, due to his compromised system.  I don't blame him for that.  In the past, as kids, we got our share of sicknesses but we bounced back and moved on.  These days, things linger and are more resilient/resistant, and more harmful.  There is no more "shaking it off."  Unfortunately the standard time for colds/flus seems to be several weeks.  A friend is unable to shake a cold that she has had since Christmas.
