Title: 13 in 2013 Hat-a-Long
Post by: thehappycrochetchic on December 29, 2012 07:24:00 AM
Would anyone like to participate in a hat along for 2013. The goal would be to make 13 hats throughout the year, that's only ONE a month and an extra for one month... not too many at all.

If you would like to play along claim a post for your official list. Throughout the year I will post patterns and suggestions for those who would like to make a hat along with everyone, but you can also just make whatever you want and if you make more than 13? Good for you!!

For January I would like to suggest a few hats for you to make, if anyone else has any suggestions please post them!

* Divine Hat- this is a super easy and quick pattern, usually takes a little over an hour and it makes a very flattering hat..

*Urban Jungle Slouchy Hat- uses the puff stitch which is a great stitch, another great hat and pattern

*Reversible Strands Hat- this is a great pattern that has a lot of possibilities for colors.

*Floral Cloche- a lovely and feminine hat

*Owl Hat- this is a super cute hat!

I love the Divine hat! :D

I made the Urban slouchy but it turned out too large ...I might try it again...

I would love more hats for men since I take most of them to a shelter...

This will be fun!

Here's my first hat! I figured I'd get a jump on things while I was on vacation :)

It's the Divine hat and it came out pretty good, except it bunches a bit more than I expected. I thought it might be because my fpdc stitches are typically a little tight, but when it's worn, it's not a problem. The hat's a little loose, so I almost wish I had stuck with the smaller hook size that I started with (I grabbed the H hook by mistake and was on Round 7 before I realized... I decided to keep going, but when I got to Round 11, I lost my place, couldn't find it and decided to frog it and use the proper hook).

I've got a pile of yarn sitting beside me for the second hat, which I might start tonight, after I write some Thank You notes.

Thanks! I really like it, too, except this one won't be for me. It doesn't go with any of my winter coats ;D But, somewhere, I do have some yarn specifically for this hat in just the right shade, and now that I know how easy it is, I'm definitely making another one.

Thank you! i added an extra stitch at the beginning so it wad 16 andd 16 throughout. then i couldn't find where my 3 yr old hid my h hook so the ribbing is in I and i added a second round of sc to decrease the extra 5 stitches that were there.

I started to chime in on this craftalong -- but then I realized this is in the Crochet Forum, and crochet has always eluded me.

But I love knitting, and I do love hats, so I'll be following you in spirit -- but on two needles!

First up is one that my sister and I are both doing from a book I bought her for Christmas.  Annie Modesitt's Admiral Anja cap.  http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/admiral-anja-hat

Piece o' cake for her, but a challenge for me!

Balatong (aka, Karen)'s 13:
1. (https://www.craftster.org/pictures/showphoto.php?photo=567994)
Using this first pattern, I recently finished 8 to be sent to the students who survived the recent tragedy in Newtown. A group of us made over 600 beanies for the students. We collaborated via Facebook, thus the silly thumb hat (which I won't cheat and count in this list).
2. BrainWaves (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/brain-waves-beanie)
3. DorkyFrog (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/frog-beanie-for-a-dorky-kid)
4. Hooded Scarf -- I'm currently doing this one free-form, because I couldn't find a free pattern that I like
5. Baseball Cap (http://www.ttbpatterns.etsy.com/) in Bernat Super Saver Teal Heather
(https://www.craftster.org/pictures/showphoto.php?photo=568991) I love this yarn, but when I went to buy more they were sold out.
6. Gia's Fedora -- (https://www.craftster.org/pictures/showphoto.php?photo=574226)
7. Raffia Summer Hat -- (https://www.craftster.org/pictures/showphoto.php?photo=574227)

Wow! 600 beanies!Amazing! And, the little thumb beanie is adorable. My students would love those (and I'd get no lessons taught in class...).

Thanks for posting the links for the Brian Waves hat (already downloaded!) and the Frog Beanie (love this... I think this might be for me :) ).

And, RhymeswOrange, I love how vibrant your hat is! I like the pattern, too! I'm adding it to my list!

I just finished my PDQ hat, only I don't have suitable buttons for it, so I'll have to get some between now and Tuesday and then post my picture.

WOW!! What a great response!

You can count your hats anyway you like, you could make 13 of the same or all different whatever you prefer!

I am loving the hats that have already been done and the 600 Hats, Great Job! I am doing the 600 monsters over on Rav:)

I have done the Phannie Hat but of course I forgot to get a pic before I sent it off...grrr I always do that!

the pattern calls for chunky yarn, but since I'm trying to stash bust i used 2 strands of ww. it worked up quickly and the pattern is easy to follow.

Never too late to join a craftalong...hop on in!

I made the voyagers hat and wore it to work today...used only yarn from my stash..:D

I know, I know...it is not so until I post pictures....I have not figured out how to take pictures of myself... :D

Did you just love that voyages pattern alwaysinmyroom?  It worked up quickly and I like the stripe effect very much.
I can't wait to see photos.

I did!  It was a bit too short and large for my head, so I added another round and then finished it with single crochet to tighten it up a bit...I wish I had more colors, but I am trying to destash with what I have...

I hear you on the destash sista!  I'm working destash only projects for my 13 hats, that's one of my personal conditions for this Hat-a-long.  With that stash I've got around here I could probably make 600 hats too! LOL  Though I'll be content to make the 13 I'm committed to here.

Although I am wearing the hats I make here for a day or two, they will be donated to the homeless shelter...I usually only wear hats I get in swaps for myself! :D

You have the opposite problem to me, I wish I had less colours but the same quantity of wool, I have an entire rainbow of little balls and refuse to buy any more until I've used most of it up!

Post by: alwaysinmyroom on January 08, 2013 09:21:31 AM
oh I have not even touched my tiny balls of wools...:D  I have almost an entire bin of those...not enough to make an entire hat, maybe a few rows...about tennis ball size or smaller...

I am thinking of doing that ten stitch blanket to get those used up...I desperately need to make room as my mother may be moving in with us this spring!

My first 2 hats were made from stash yarn, and that's the plan for the rest, now that I think about it :) I have more than enough yarn to make it through all 13 :D

And, I was just writing out my shopping list for Jo-Ann Fabrics, and when I popped on here to check the thread, I realized that I had forgotten to put the buttons for my hat on the list! I'm taking the hat with me to find the perfect match. When I get back later tonight, I'll stitch them on and try to get a decent picture by the glow of the Ott-Lite ;)

craftADDchick--are you still doing the washcloths?  I also want to destash cotton yarns...I have too many market bags and lots of leftover cotton...:D

Every once in a while, I go on a washcloth kick. I'm actually due to make a few, I think. I have a large cone of blue and white variegated cotton yarn to use up. I lost all of the patterns I had saved, along with the list of the ones that I had already made, but I figure that, since I already hit the 50 mark, it's okay for me to repeat patterns now. I was pretty proud of myself for making 50 cloths from 50 patterns! :)

I suppose I could use the cotton yarn to make a hat... a cute little cotton baby hat, perhaps. I do have friends expecting a boy in about a month, so I'll have to pick out a pattern.

And then make dishcloths with the rest... :D

I did buy buttons for my hat. I couldn't get exactly what I wanted because they were too big. The button selection wasn't that great, so the options were limited. I won't get to sew them on until at least Thursday...

That baby turban is cute!

I just saw this new pattern on ravelry I think it will have to go on my list...
http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/ruga-hat (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/ruga-hat)

I've also made this beauty for my son, I may need to make another.  It it challenging but I love the outcome.
http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/the-open-weave-c1-complication-1---updated-for-right-and-left-handed-creation (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/the-open-weave-c1-complication-1---updated-for-right-and-left-handed-creation)
I may need to splurge on this one by Aaron, his patterns are so intricate and visually interesting.
http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/stacked-large-diamond-beanie---updated-for-right-and-left-handed-creation (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/stacked-large-diamond-beanie---updated-for-right-and-left-handed-creation)

What is everyone doing with all their hats?  I am trying to decide since my family currently has all the hats they'll wear (they're a picky bunch).  I'm trying to decide, rescue mission or cancer center... any other thoughts?

Title: Re: 13 in 2013 Hat-a-Long

I usually start with family and friends and then do some random acts of kindness things where I will just hand someone a hat and then I take whatever is left to our local homeless shelter...I love making hats but there is a limit on how many can be worn by people I know! :D

Thanks everyone for wonderful patterns!  My collection of crochet patterns is growing!

I started the stranded hat this morning...the picture is a bit deceiving because they are actual TWO hats and are not reversible in those colors...just one side is smoother and the other is ribbed...but, it is still a fun and wonderful hat...nice and thick and very versatile!  I am going to use it to make some men's hats as the shelter I go to is mostly for men...

WOW--I just looked at Aaron's hats!  I love complex patterns in solid colors to show off the actual stitches...I might not splurge for yarn but I definitely will splurge for patterns!  I wonder if he has a book?

It was a challenging pattern but the instructions were clear.  He does a good job of setting up his explanations of special stitches and methods at the beginning of the pattern.   If you're comfortable with funky stitches like front post half double crochet, etc. then you would be fine.

Great new hat links! And, I love the latest finished hats. The Divine hat is so cute in a child sized version!

This year, I'm hoping to make a stash of crafted items so I can set up a "booth" (in the living room :) ) and give friends a "gift card" to use at my "craft booth". They can "shop" for their own gift :) Depending on what's left, things may be charity bound...

I just made and frogged the blueberry beret..:(...it was too big so I scaled it down, but it still does not lay properly on my head and I did not like the way the increases caused rippling instead of a nice smooth circle...I would recommend trying a softer yarn--I used a worsted wool...it is also a very open pattern, which is pretty, but not practical for me...

Anybody else have a cute, more closed beret pattern?

Title: Re: 13 in 2013 Hat-a-Long

Sorry no beret patterns here.  ::)

I worked on the Two Roads hat and got to the band with slip stitches only to frog it.  I was using a dark purple and stitches were hard to see which was a problem when I got to this area.  I won't let that stop me from making this pattern but I'm a bit perturbed with this one right now so I'm going to have to work on something else first.

I love dark colors, but it can be troublesome when crocheting or knitting.  I think I might invest in a lighted crochet hook.  My girlfriend has several and swears by them.

I think I will spend my lunch hour hunting for patterns... :D

Title: Re: 13 in 2013 Hat-a-Long

Thanks for posting comments about specific patterns. I was toying with the idea of making the blueberry beret, but now I think I'll wait. I did take a peek at the Two Roads pattern, and I think I actually like version 1 better, and now that I know the slip stitch band can be fussy, I'll probably make version 1.

I am pooped right now, so I'll wait until tomorrow to sew the buttons on my hat from last Friday. So, pictures tomorrow!

Oh my gosh, I gotta put the Divine on my list.  Everyone's Divine is turning out divine!

Here's my latest Baseball Cap, but it looks much nicer than a baseball cap.  I might just use the pattern without the brim to make a flapper-style hat.  I used Bernat Super Saver in Teal Heather.  Can you see the flapper hat in this color with some peacock feathers tucked behind the flower, and then beads crocheted into the band?

My friend was nice enough to gift this pattern to me.  I don't usually buy patterns. Here's the link on etsy:
http://www.ttbpatterns.etsy.com/

I learned how to do reverse single crochet from this pattern-- a great stitch to add to the stitch "tool box."

balatong--you look adorable in your lovely hat!  What an interesting stitch!

that1girl--I am sure you will speed by the 13 hats in no time...nice start...

I finished the stranded hat--once with spiraling cables and once with straight cables..I love the pattern and will put it in with my standard hats---the pattern says it is reversible, so if you want to make it reversible, you do have to figure out how to carry the different colors invisibly...I loved the spirals so I just carried the colors inside...I went down a hook size as well...the larger hook is probably more for a man hat than a female hat

After I eat dinner, I think I'm going to sew the buttons on my hat and take a picture... and then grade some papers... and then look at more hat patterns... and then grade some more papers... and then pick out some yarn.

And if we have a snow day tomorrow (probably not), I can crochet another hat!

Title: Re: 13 in 2013 Hat-a-Long
Post by: craftADDchick on January 16, 2013 09:31:20 AM
Here's hat #2! It's the PDQ hat from Stitch N' Bitch The Happy Hooker. Instead of the 3 colors in the pattern, I used 4. This hat is definitely not me, so it's going in the gift/give-away pile (most likely fate of all of the hats :) ).

I couldn't find the buttons I wanted (hot pink or orange flowers) in a small enough size, so I went with the green ones. This hat was super easy and quick (I carried the color change yarns up the inside so only 8 ends to weave instead of 26).

It's made with 2 colors of Caron Simply Soft Brites, and 2 Red Heart Super Saver (the orange is slightly thinner, but it worked with the CSS). All yarns from the stash...

Here is my spiraling cables hat.  I can't post the straight cables one because it is for a swap partner...

Then, using the Voyager as a guide, I made this one...I just filled in the holes with a different color

I like the spiraling cables hat (where is the pattern from alwaysinmyroom? I just searched and didn't get a good match :) )! I might make that my next one. But, I feel like I should make a hat for a male first (not any specific male, but it would be nice to mix it up a bit). I might do the Boy Beanie (I think that's the name) from SnB Happy Hooker.

Thanks! I'll go and bookmark it now :)

ETA: I didn't realize it was the same hat! The spiral strands threw me off... I definitely like it better with the spiral strands! And, added bonus that it's reversible!

Title: Re: 13 in 2013 Hat-a-Long
Post by: alwaysinmyroom on January 21, 2013 10:54:37 AM
yes--but if you do reversible, you will have to cut and weave in the colors...I carried the yarn so mine are not reversible...I think when I make it with just two colors, I will make it reversible...the other side is flat and sort of boring, but some guys might prefer that to the spirals...the picture of the two hats are NOT the same hat...just the same colors...the colors do NOT reverse like that :D

And since I'm inside, nobody can laugh at me for looking silly. I do wish I had the time tonight to crochet me up a hat, because the ones I've already made just won't cut it for me :)

Basic granny stitch beanie in mint green acrylic DK. This will be going to charity, I've started a box for donations and when it is full I will share them out between the local charity shops. I buy most of hubbys clothing from them so like to give something back.

Nice hats, Kookaloo!

I am hoping to attend a play next weekend, and the theater's website says that if you bring in a new adult-sized hat for their local shelter, you get a free hot drink and a cookie! And, since both of the hats are destined for gifting or giving, this is the perfect match (I do love cookies... :) ).

Thanks craftADDchick. I think that it's a fab idea the theatre collecting hat donations and you getting a cookie & coffee as an incentive  ;D

Here is hat #3

Again a basic beanie but in the colours hubby requested. He is happy with it he's just not happy about having his photo taken tonight, I was disturbing his reading  ::)

Today I am making the Divine hat. It is so much easier than it looks - BONUS! I don't think i will have enough of the yarn I started with though so I will be making a two colour one  ::)

You are on a roll, K-Star!  Do you just wing the hats?  I am trying to learn how to know when to increase/decrease to just make a basic hat!

I love the one you made your hubby...the colors and design are interesting---it is hard to find men hats except for maybe a basic knit watch cap...

Good idea to have a bag of charity hats...most of my hats end up there as I just love making them...

I just wing the basic beanies. I try them on either mine or Matts head to see where to stop increasing  ;D I've got a big head and he has a small head so its man sized for me and ladies size for him  ;D I like the way the hdc worked for the blue stripes. He wants thicker stripes (red) in the next one and I have just enough of the camo yarn left to oblige him (but not until he gets round to baking me some flapjacks!  ;) ) It is very much like the "Boy Beanie" in the Happy Hooker book I made him one from there ages ago but I no longer have the book.

My Divine is coming along nicely but it seems to eat up a lot of yarn, it might have to be three colours  :-[

Finished the Divine  ;D I will certainly be making more of these! I used a 6.5mm and a 5mm hook and three different yarns. The taupe at the bottom is two strands of DK weight but it worked fine. I think I'll make a couple of double stranded ones as I have a lot of DK. I'll probably go down a hook size too as it's a loose fit even on my big noggin  ::) I might even be keeping this one for myself despite the colours.

Kookaloo, I love both of your Divine hats! Very nice!

And, I should really pack up the hats for the free cookies charity donation this weekend. I don't know if I'll get in any hat crochet time this weekend- I'll be crazy busy and I have a baby blanket to finish (I'm using the linen stitch, and while it's easy and I love it, it doesn't increase in size very quickly...). But, when I head out on vacation, I may tote along a few balls of yarn and a hat pattern... maybe I can make a baby hat with the leftover yarn from the blanket!

moxiepurple, the hat looks lovely in my favourite colour  ;D
I finished another Divine last night, my 6th hat of the week  ::) it's a stress related thing but we do what we can to keep under control, right?

My 25 yr old son wants a white one and hubby has a request in for another camo hat so I'll probably hit 8 hats for the week and then nothing much will happen for a while.

Love the purple hat!

K-star--you are so lucky to have men that will wear your hats...mine are so picky...unless it is a smooth knitted watchcap in blue, black or grey, they will not be worn!

8 hats in a week?  You mean the month, right? a week? wow!

...K-star--you are so lucky to have men that will wear your hats...

My neighbor, loves the hats I make, so far he has asked for a GIR hat (Invader Zim), a brain slug (Futurama), and one plain grey in cotton that he has been wearing every day since I made it last summer. He's a married 34 year old going on 16. (;

My husband though...not interested.

I guess now we're into Feb I can't claim 6 in a month but yup, 6 in a week - it's a stress buster. My brain can switch off (if I'm lucky) and my hands carry on doing their thing. Mindless counting calms me.
I made 3/4 of another camo hat and frogged it this evening and I'm about 2/3 of the way through another Divine  ;D This one is  Cascade Fixation in purple/pink/orange and it is most certainly going to be MINE  ;D

Had to finish it off with a row of sc in black as I ran out of the camo with 20 stitches to go! That's it then, no more camo yarn in my stash  ;D

I'm looking for another pattern to use for the coming week, I think I've used Divine enough this week  :)

I started this just now http://www.rheatheylia.com/index.php?page=patterns&id=6 in Caron Simply Soft, unsure of the official names of the colours. It's pink & purple. I dislike using a plastic hook but have no alternative.

Me too Miss Barbara, I like my Susan Bates aluminium ones for yarn but don't have one in 8mm, oddly enough I don't like the Bates inline heads for thread crochet, my favourite thread hooks are vintage Lee Wards ones  :)

My latest hat "Purely Puffs"

Holy cow! You ladies have been busy! I'm following along with fantasticmio's blog challenge, "Project Crochet," and her challenge for February is to use novelty yarns. I can't see using novelty yarn on a hat for a male, so I may have to make a second hat again this month :)

Since I'm not watching the Super Bowl, I think I need to rustle up some novelty yarn and a basic hat pattern...

1st divine hat, in white mystery yarn. Feels like cotton, but may be a blend, it's super soft. I added an extra row before the ribbing so I could pull it over my ears. I'm not used to any kind of cold lol.

And a pix of the yarn before I started.

2nd Divine, infant sized, using Aslan Trends Magic Garden 224, a green/multi acrylic.. I did not do the ribbing, just kept going with the same stitch, added an extra row, and did the last row with 5dcs to make it ruffle a bit.

Thank you! It was what came out of the basket, left over from another project. I love the green tho, it was more than I usually spend, bit I didn't need a lot, fortunately.
Btw, all the hats on here are making me want to crochet, which aside from a baby blanket in November, I haven't done in over a year. Maybe puff stitch next? Out a slouchy hat... I need to soon so I can yet some yarn to match the scarf I made for my trip.

There are soo many great hat patterns over on Ravelry.com, some are paid patterns but I only buy a pattern if I am in love and i cant figure out how to make it myself, I have been working on some ami's for the sweat shoppe swap so I havent done a hat in a couple weeks, i'm starting to think I may have enough for myself, a whole basket full..I already made my girls hats for christmas, so I think I will find something 'manly' to make for my boys (4 & 6y.o) what is everyone's favorite 'man' hat???

Also since it is February and V-Day is coming up, how about hats in romantic colors? Red, pink, white, whatever color says romance to you??

My hubbys favourite "man hat" is a basic beanie in camo type yarn with a brightly coloured stripe or two  ;D
Like this:

His next one will have orange stripes and I'm just about to start it  ;D

Title: Re: 13 in 2013 Hat-a-Long
Post by: alwaysinmyroom on February 04, 2013 08:01:36 AM
I think most men prefer a beanie type hat...and it has to cover the ears!  Mine does like stripes but he prefers his hats in dark colors only, so they are boring to me...my nephew-in-law has dreadlocks so he loves any hat big enough to tuck them in...I found quite a few on ravelry that fit the bill.

Finished the second one with a 4" tail left from the skein  :) I'd call that good value, two hats for 3.09

Another for myself  :) Purely Puffs again in bluemint & lime - I love it  ;D I did the sc edging using the same 8mm hook that I made the main body of the hat with and it came out fitting fine. I'm now thinking of going back and doing the pink/purple one again using the bigger hook.

Post by: craftADDchick on February 05, 2013 06:35:12 PM
Kookaloo, I can't believe how quickly you can knock out a hat! It always takes me much longer than the pattern says :(

I just finished up the "Perfect Crocheted Beanie," and I used some fun fur to make make it. I thought it was coming out a little bit big, so I eliminated 2 rounds...I crochet pretty tightly, so I was surprised because I usually have to add rounds to get things up to the proper size! I have to get ready for work tomorrow, so I'll have to post a picture later.

Here is a bad shot of my "rain hat"--hubby says it makes me look like a homeless person, but I don't care--it is comfy, big, and has a brim to keep the snow and rain of winter off my face!  And, it is red, my favorite color.

I'll try to get a better picture when the weather clears up (I hate snow!)...and when I am not wearing it...one of you put up the pattern, so I will get that, too... :D

Ooh, love the rain hat.... I don't care either... We're all mad hatters here lol!

I may need to frog the white hat... I don't have any white to do the cable hat from the same Web page, and my only white sweater is cables.... Hrmmm... the nearest craft store only has red heart and scratchy wool. The nearest yarn store should be open now.... But I'm supposed to be destashing. Does anyone know if youcan bring crochet stuff on the plane? I heard you can't bring metal. All of mine are metal, so Maybe I should buy a wood needle, maybe pick up some white while I am there... while there.

I always carry my knitting and crochet needles on the plane...never had an issue...but just in case, carry a small self-addressed and stamped envelope to return it to yourself :)  I prefer metal then plastic hooks...bamboo hooks seem to have some tooth that hangs on to the yarn and slows me down...I hate the drag...

Love the red rain hat! And, if you're of a certain age, you can claim you're a member of the Red Hat Society and get away with wearing a slightly kooky hat!

I haven't had any trouble with my aluminum crochet hooks on the plane. I haven't tried any of the small steel ones, so I'd stick with something that doesn't look too poke-y. I also make sure that I have a pair of safety scissors (little kid ones with the rounded tips) so I don't lose my favorite pair.

Here's my Perfect Crocheted Beanie (http://desiloop.blogspot.com/2012/02/pattern-release-perfect-crocheted.html). I made it with Red Heart Super Saver and some fun fur (which I've decided I don't like to crochet with very much!). I left off 2 rounds of dc, since it seemed like it was getting rather large...

I have a baby blanket to finish, so I think I'll make a matching hat. Maybe even a frog hat...

I made a newsboy cap...my brother stole it for his girlfriend so I need to make another!  The brim has plastic canvas inserted to keep its shape.  I think I will make it slouchier for me by making a few more rounds and going up a hook size!

I made three baby beanies and two adult sized hats...I will definitely post pics later tonight!

I am doing great here, but not so good at the knitting hats craftalong....I just can't find a hat I want to knit (plus, they do take me a lot longer!) :D

I finished a little baby beanie! But, it's too late tonight to take a photo. I'll make sure I'll do it tomorrow when I'm procrastinating on grading papers :)

I love making baby size hats, they are sooo quick to make and you can practice new stitches and such on them since their so small:)

It definitely took me less time than an adult hat, but probably longer than it should have :)

I used the Single Crochet Baby Beanie Cap (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/single-crochet-baby-beanie-cap) pattern. It looked a little tiny (I'm not really sure how big a baby head is), so I added an extra increase, and a couple of extra rows to make a fold up brim. It coordinates with a little blanket I made as a gift for a friend.

Working on my next hat using crochet-on-the-double, which is a new technique for me. Is it bad that I almost want to skip shopping/dinner/concert with friends so I can stay home and work on it? ;)

Ok--I believe I am up to 19 crochet hats now... :D

Here are some of them...I am trying to use up a big bucket of leftover yarn scraps before making hats out of my new yarns! :D

These were gifts for babies...one is a newborn hat and the other is for a large 6 month old (my chubby great nephew!):

Basic crochet beanies for the homeless shelter, friends, etc:

My nephew and his dad: (actually, I think my niece wanted the large one to match her son! :) )

Hubby with one of his favorites

Wow, alwaysinmyroom! I was proud of myself for having made 4 hats, but you've blown me out of the water! I don't know if I'll get 19 hats made in a year! Nicely done!

Balatong, love that hat! I was going to try to do a Tunisian crochet hat, but they looked too tricky. I didn't think to do it flat and then do some decreases!

Ok, got to whip out another one before the sweater on the cover of vogue knitting takes over. :P (Yes I bought yarn for the first time in 2 years, the temptation is very strong.)

Nicely done, that1girl! A beret style hat, not as slouchy as your mesh hat, is on my list of hats to try for myself. Hats, in general, do not look good on me, so I'm hoping a beret might work!

I'm almost done with my crochet-on-the-double hat! I've started the last section, which I'll finish when I get home this afternoon, and then I'll seam it together and weave in the tails.

I think I'll try a baby hat that has some crocodile stitch in it next...

Welcome!  It is nice to share patterns and ideas and be inspired by others in this craftalong!  ha ha I adore that party hat!!!

I am also going to do a few brainwave beanies..nice way to use up the little bits...

I made my hubby a rasta inspired hat, which he wears all the time, so I need to snatch it and take a picture!

Right now, I am knitting more than crocheting, but a few of those party hats might need to be done... :D

iZombieMom, great list of hats! I've bookmarked a few, especially the baby hats. Seems like there's always someone at work who is expecting!

I've got a hat finished, and just need to photograph it. I'll do that when I get in from shoveling. I can hear my neighbors out there, so it must be time ;)

Here's my finished hat! It's Mio's Hat, by fantasticmio (http://fantasticmio.com/hat/), and it uses crochet-on-the-double. It is a good man-sized hat, and the CotD makes it reversible, too. It also seems like it would be pretty warm, too!

:)

We have state testing to deal with for the next 2 days (at least in 6th grade), and since we can't do any computer work, or grade any papers, but have to walk around for the entire testing time (about 3 hours) to monitor the kids, I just might have to bring a crochet project (I worked on a scarf a few years ago), and a dishcloth might just fit the bill. Now, to check for a simple pattern so I don't have to focus on it too much...

Haven't made another hat yet, my sister brought over yarn yesterday so I could make an infinity scarf for her so I did that. Think about making her some matching gloves or a hat with the leftover yarn. Also going to attempt some slippers for myself today & maybe the Micky & Minnie mouse hat. So many decisions! lol

My sister has asked me to crochet baby hats for a charity her school is involved with  ;D

I'm starting with  this  http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/the-karlie-hat

I think there's a mistake in this row: Row 7: ch3, sk 3 stitches, *(3dc, ch1, 3dc-this is the SHELL stitch) in the next stitch, sk 3 stitches, (dc, ch1, dc-this is the V-STITCH)in the next stitch. Repeat from the * to complete the round. The v-stitch will be in the last stitch. Sl st to the 3rd chain of the first ch3 (here and throughout the rest of the hat)

I think the sk 3 stitches should be in the brackets for the repeat section or you're doing the shell right next to the v-st and it looks odd  ::)

Hmmm, I've made 2 so far, the first one with a 4mm hook and the second I used a 5mm (the pattern states 3.75 but I could never go that low with a WW yarn even though SS is on the thin side) and they both measure 10" around and 4.5 inches from top to bottom  ??? Is that too small for even a preemie?
it's supposed to measure 13-14 inches around and 5-6 inches deep. I'm going for a 6mm hook for the next one! I hope these tiny ones will be usable but I'm so out of practise with babies that I have no idea, my babies are 19 and 25 years old  ;)

Post by: Kookaloo_Starr on March 23, 2013 04:20:31 AM
I finished off a 4th baby hat this morning and have enough of this skein left to make another one  :)
I'm using up partial skeins of SS so there will be some very bright colours in the mix but I was told colour doesn't matter.

I might have to make some baby Divines  :D

Post by: Kookaloo_Starr on March 23, 2013 06:02:46 AM
Two more, the skein ran out partway through the second one so it's two-tone  ;)

Think I'm going to class each skein or colour as a project instead of each hat with these only being baby hats  :)

Title: Re: 13 in 2013 Hat-a-Long
Post by: Kookaloo_Starr on March 23, 2013 07:25:26 AM
I'm now doing this hat in yellow  :) http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/30-minute-baby-hat
I wonder how many I can get out of this partial skein?

First one made with a 4.5mm hook and measure 12" around by 5.5" deep. Think I might go up to a 5mm as it feels a bit too stiff for my liking.
Made 2 with the 5mm hook and like the feel of those better than the first one. #3 doesn't have the frilly edging and I'm now all out of that yellow yarn  :D
Next pattern is this one http://www.toastyfrog.net/2009/12/25/baby-ripple-hat-crochet-pattern/ with an oddment of white.

I'm going to attempt a boys baseball type cap out of some blue cotton I have for my nieces friend who is due in July. I'll keep you posted on how that works out  :)

4 more finished today  ;D

You're killing me, Kookaloo! "Slacker!"  LOL! :)

And on the one that you found an error on (Karly's Hat?... the other baby hat style you made), did your correction turn out right? And, did you figure out the sizing issue? I crochet tightly, so I definitely don't want to make one too small!

Title: Re: 13 in 2013 Hat-a-Long
Post by: Kookaloo_Starr on March 26, 2013 04:46:13 AM
I'm still hatting  ;D 3 more for today.

Yeh my correction worked out right on the Karly Hat, I ended up getting rid of the ch3 at the start of the pattern too by slip stitching into the v-st or shell at the start of the rounds. I'm getting newborn size with a 5mm & 5.5mm hook and I don't think I crochet particularly tightly.

When I took my Mom to the cancer center, I noticed that there was a sign and a basket at the nurses' station --"FREE HATS for Patients"....I know where I will be taking all of the extra hats I have been making...even if they are only enjoyed for a short period, I think everyone should have a nice and cheerful hat!

K_Star...I love your color combos...and I want to say that you are a speed crocheter!

Here is a baby hat I made for a friend's grandson...until I realized he lives in hot Florida! :D  So it will go to my great nephew instead!  :D  I basically made a baby hat and ears and embroidered...it is suppose to look like Totoro...

My brother in law saw the baby hats and asked me to do a mansize one for him so that'll take me a bit longer, I want to make 3 more baby boy hats and then I've made an equal amount of girls and boys.

That's great that you've found somewhere new to donate Always and I do hope your Mom is doing OK.

I finished this Newborn basketball hat a few days ago ... It was my first time sewing a chain down like it called for & I'm not thrilled with how it turned out lol I think I'm going to take them off & try again!

And here is a baby bonnet I finished yesterday. I tend to get ahead of myself sometimes & totally did not pay attention to the fact that the pattern changed (the bobbles weren't supposed to be lined up like that) but of course I didn't notice until I was close to finishing the hat ... So. Guess I'll be making it again here soon! You can't see it but there is a white later in the very back, then I did a white edging on it.

I found this pattern and have started one in a pale lemon colour. http://www.mooglyblog.com/blackberry-salad-striped-baby-bonnet/

Made this today, I have 3 more to make to make this months target  ;D pretty good when I didn't start until  half way through the month.

And the bonnet

I made a baby head by stuffing a stocking, I'm going to have to sculpt it a bit and make a face on it though, I can't leave it blank  :D

What a good idea to stuff a stocking to a baby size head!  I have a chart but it would be nice to have an actual "head"...

Hi ladies, sorry I hadn't gotten back sooner with a pattern link for the bobble bonnet. My hard drive crashed on my computer which really sucks ... I lost alot of stuff I hadn't backed up in awhile. Lesson learned I guess. Just thanking God I didn't lose pictures of my little angel Landan that I can never replace or the birth of my second son. Phew! Did lose some of my photography pictures though but thankfully did not have any clients waiting on pics!

Didn't make any new hats while my computer has been getting fixed but started working on some Meningitis Awareness pins (what my 3yr old passed away from in 2006) since World Meningitis Awareness Day is coming up at the end of the month.

And here is the link for the bonnet, I remade it the right way so I'll have to post a picture of that soon. It looks beautiful with the bobbles offset like the pattern calls for - http://www.mooglyblog.com/blackberry-salad-striped-baby-bonnet/

And yea ... have to take my computer BACK tomorrow because they sent it home with us prematurely as important files are missing off of it. GRRR! lol

ETA - I see you found it Kookaloo! And super adorable bonnet!

And, that1girl, you are another hat-making machine! I need to make a hat for April, but I've been a bit bogged down by other things. Maybe I need to make myself a spring beret!

wow--lots of hats!  That1girl,I love how you made the brain waves one more like a dreadlock hat instead of a tight beanie!

I actually made our of the brain waves hats--I am going to be catching up with pics soon...this has been a very busy and stressful three months for me, but I am getting through it by keeping my crafting mojo going! :d

Wow, that1girl! You are just cranking out the hats! Sadly, I have not made a hat this month because I was focused on another project. But, I just found out I can put it aside for a while, so maybe I can start on a hat soon. A baby hat probably, but at least it'll be something for the month. Although, I'm really thinking a beret might look decent on me...

That is totally cute! I bet most football fans would get a real 'kick' out of it! Of course, actual punting or throwing of babies is strictly forbidden by league regulations... :)

Oooh! I like that yellow one a lot! I'm going to locate the pattern!

ETA: Found it! Now I'm going to have to see if the library has the book :)

ETA 2: Never mind... I just realized it has the puff stitch. I don't like to crochet puff stitches :)

:) Maybe, but it'd probably be less thinking to find a pattern that doesn't have it ;D

lol craftADDchick--I did a crochet hat out of the NORO Crochet book that had hundreds of little crochet bobbles...NEVER AGAIN!

I love the yellow hat but I am also not good at doing those puff stitches... :D

I love bobbles, but because you have to take the hook out of the work for a puff stitch... blech... so I try to avoid it whenever possible. :)

Ridge Hat with Brim by Kool Stitch

Once again, that1girl, nicely done! Did you put something in the edge of the brim of the Ridge Hat to give it support? I saw a pattern that used rubber tubing on the edge and you crocheted over it, so I was wondering if you did something similar because it looks like it holds its shape pretty well.

I used some thin floral wire, taped up the ends, and crocheted over it. because it was all floppy and wavy.

Good idea! That sounds less expensive than aquarium tubing :)

I haven't made a hat this month, but because I was a bit ahead, I'm not really behind- 5 hats in 5 months! I just went and updated my list of what I'd like to make, although I'm on the fence about the straw sun hat. I'm wondering if I make it using cotton yarn, or jute if I'll only have to make it one layer. If I make it from jute, maybe I'll put in a fun fabric lining. And now, I may have to hit the hardware store today!

I didn't have the crochet time I thought I would, so it's only half finished.  But, I'm on the easy repetitive pattern part, so the rest should go pretty quickly. I may do a couple of rounds now and then get my materials ready for school tomorrow (the kids will have to deal with handwritten notes instead of typed ones ::) ).

Oooh! I like that one a lot, that1girl! did you make the "brim" shorter than the pattern? I like how you've rolled it up (and it looks pretty chic without the flower, too!).

I've got a Brain Waves hat stitched up, I just need to weave in all of the tails. After I fold a bit of laundry, I might start on that tonight...

Here's my completed Brain Waves hat! There were a lot of ends to weave in... I hate weaving in ends... But, it made a nice "guy" hat, so it's worth it, I guess!

I picked up some Lion Brand "Bon Bons" on clearance this weekend, so I think I might need to make the baby bonnet with the rainbow bobbles next...

Love your color scheme..very subtle yet interesting enough...

Thanks! The Brain Waves hat was fun to make, and the color combo reminds me of the colors of the Massachusetts State Police vehicles... which is odd, but I really like the colors of their cruisers & uniforms :)

I'm thinking I might do another one in shades of green!

Nice! They look good in the variegated yarn, too!

I have half of a moose hat finished, and jute twine on hand to make a sun hat, plus the yarn to make a rainbow bobble baby hat. But a new cast on a newly discovered broken wrist means no crocheting for at least a month :(

I forgot to post the reset of the hats I made in 2013!!!  I ended up making a few over 20 in crochet... ;D...I won't post all of the scrappy ones...

But, here are the ones I made for something special coming up...they are made using the Brainwaves pattern, offered free online.

I still love that Brainwaves pattern! Great job, alwaysinmyroom!

And, I'm still bummed that my broken wrist derailed all of my crafty (and crochet-y) plans this summer. It's been a busy fall and start to the winter, but I'm hoping that February brings a bit of a slow down... Then, I can crochet a bit more!
