Title: Halloween Owl
Post by: thisbirdsabsurd on October 10, 2012 10:55:49 AM
-I made this for the Vintage Halloween swap, inspired by some smaller vintage owls.  He's about 12" high, made of fabric and covered in (gulp) glitter.  The eyes were an accidental find, but I can't imagine any other use for those buttons than owl eyes!

and here's another view (borrowed from rackycoo!)  :)

Mine, mine, mine! I just love my new owl!

Look how great he looks in my dining room, next to his new friend, Mr. Crow.

 ;D

I absolutely adore this. Now I can't be convinced that I DON'T need a glittery owl in my life.

LOL nooo.  I think you need one too.
MW-  I stitched him up, stuffed him and gave him feathers. Then covered him in black glitter. (Eeeeeek!)  His legs are fabric wrapped wire.  :)

Is this pattern from the Artful Bird book?

Thanks all! - And Diesels mom - it is based off of that pattern, although I changed most of it.  (I changed the head size and shape, wing shape, tail shape, ears and eyes.  Also I added the fabric feathers.)  I pretty much just used it as a guideline for the body gussets and legs.  Good eye though!  Have you tried any of the patterns in that book?

No, I consider myself a decent seamstress but they look like a lot of work. Your owls shape I like better than the book. Totally love your owl.

He's gorgeous! Kinda reminds me of the Ann Wood owls, but he's definitely all original! I'd love to have him in my Halloween decor too. Really lovely!

Thank you!  Craftewoman - I hadn't heard of Ann Wood (????)  What lovely stuff!  And there on the front page of her site is a black owl - I love him!  Thanks for broadening my horizons!  :)

He is absolutely wonderful...and I am wondering how you did such an incredible job balancing his weight and getting him to stand on his birdie feet! ;D

LOL - well it's funny you should ask.  I think he is a bit wobbly until you get him positioned just right.  The key is to stuff him very tightly and make the feet big enough to support him.  (I think next time I would make the back toe slightly longer to make him less prone to tipping over.)

Your owl is awesome. It's so hard to believe it's just fabric (and glitter). I would totally leave him up year round too, he's too cute to reserve for Halloween only.
