Details of swap:

Who doesn't like to make art? And who wouldn't LOVE to randomly discover a bit of art in their local library or park?

Each swapper will create 5 small items (they can be duplicates or each different) to send to their partner to abandon. The receiving partner will place these items around their local hometown in the hopes of inspiring others and bringing a smile. Additionally, each person will include 1 small item for their partner. Again, this could be the same as what you made to be abandonned or something different along the swap theme.

As art is received and abandonned, the swapper should post pictures in the gallery. It would be fabulous if the swapper was able to follow up on the art to see if it had been discovered and post as well if possible.

The swap is open to each one's creativity so make this your own! Hiking last weekend I discovered a tree with christmas ornaments in the middle of the woods and it made my day. Hopefully we can share our own smiles and create our own game to figure out where to abandon.

This swap is inspired by a posting by a fellow craftster at https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=408484.0

Really love this idea. I work on a college campus and think that found-art will be a great stress reliever for students.

Yay, my sign-up is sent!  Now, thanks to you all, when I go out during daylight hours, I'm scouting out potential art-abandonment sites, which is more positive than my usual frame of mind when I'm out.  :) I'll keep working on my local art abandonment issues during the sign-up period and try to get some art out into the world.

I live in a big city, work in a hospital, which is near our provincial parliament, between two universities, near an art college, a fashion district, a huge mall, etc, so I have lots of indoor places to abandon - so long as they are not threatening looking packages.  I also live in a suburban area with a huge zoo nearby and a large park/conservation area, so I could abandon outside as well.

BTW - question - when we make our items, are we shipping them unpackaged for the receiver to package for abandoning, or do we ship packaged and ready for abandonment?  Or should that be discussed amongst partners???

I could package, and leave open in case the receiver wants to leave a note...  I was thinking that for my received items, I would like to leave a note about our project/swap, and a link to this site, and any blog post I make about it, in case anyone wants to leave a comment when it is found.

That would be really neat to hear from someone that found an item. I think in general the items should be shipped ready for abandonment so that one half of the team makes the item, the other half abandons it (and vice versa sending in the other direction). BUT, I think it would be great to talk with your partners about leaving a note with it. Definitely discuss possible notes and if the crafter could include them or the abandonner could add them. It might be easier for the crafter to include notes. This would also be better just in case someone who lives near the abandonner found the art and recognized the handwriting (slim, I know, but depending on who finds it, you do not necessarily need someone knocking at your door).

I also have to say welcome microjivvy and onyxnox. And a special welcome to calluna because this is her 100th swap! (I don't know if she has noticed this...)

I feel as though a rendition of Happy Birthday is in order. I'm on my way to 100, but a bit to go :)

hmmm... I didn't intend to wrap mine (or expect my partner to wrap mine), I just intended to put a tag on them.

They should definitely be visible as art! I was thinking maybe the wrapping was part of the art.

wow 100! congrats and woohoo!  I think there should definitely be an official craftster 'swapper extraordinaire' merit badge for this.

I realized the other day that I just started swapping in January, and by the end of July I will have done 17 swaps.  This makes me officially insane I think but I like it!

I participate in the Toy Society (www.thetoysociety.blogspot.com) and I put the stuffies I make and leave-out-in-plain-sight in ziploc bags. I include a small "Take me home" tag and then a longer note (which I printed directly from their site) and it's up to me to leave personal info like email, etc. The note does direct the finder to "log" their finds in on the Toy Society blog.

BTW - My sister's toys in New Hampshire get found and logged all the time and mine never do in San Francisco. I did watch someone pick one of mine up, but they never followed up with the blog.

The more the merrier!  ;D
And 17 swaps in 7 months is kind of a mind-boggling amount of swapping.
My mind is already boggled because the Benadryl I took an hour ago has taken hold...the loopiness would suggest that I stop trying to post messages for a few hours...

I remember thinking a few years ago how people could swap so much - then I started swapping and lo and behold, I am caught up in the madness too!

I am already making up  some items - they are small and can be packaged in small little baggies to make it friendly for indoor/outdoor abandoning, and probably could be made unisex.

I sent my questionare!
I usually put one of my email addresses on whatever I "drop". Sometimes I get emails with thank you's or messages asking me why I did it. The first time I "dropped" some handpainted bookmarks I was too shy to do this, but the times after that I added the email. I guess curiosity drove me to it!

I think we will end up with fabulous discussions over adding notes or emails to the crafts. Definitely not required by the crafter not definitely a possibility.

Some new swappers added. Domesticmamma's first swap!

So I am really enjoying reading the questionnaires sent in. Just to share, we have some possible crafts involving assemblage, fiber arts, ceramics, wood, mini books, and beads.

I leave folded cranes with fortunes written inside them around here (the outside says "fortune crane, open for fortune" so they know what they are), but I don't think that would be good enough for this swap.  I could do little amigurumi, though, so I'll have to think about it...  Hmmm...

I love creative forms of street art.  I so admire the painting and wheatpaste graffiti art people do, and yarnbombing is just genius.  Lately I've seen more versions of funny 'take one' poster takeoffs, found this on pinterest with some great examples http://pinterest.com/andithinks/take-one/ .  I hadn't heard of the 'abandoned art' idea but it's fabulous, and I'm so excited to think of something good to throw out into the world and see what everyone else does.

OK, I'm a member of artabandonment at facebook. Can we integrate the two. I just spent over 2 hours today at the page. I would like to make a tab about the art abondonment group at facebook and the reason for the swap here at craftster.  http://www.facebook.com/groups/ArtAbandonment/

I have been going over ideas of what to abandon and this group is so awesome and so many craftsters already belong. The idea that we send it to someone else to 'drop' is fabulous. I want to make tag cards to include both reasons for this swap. Just sayin.

Near my job is this sad Charlie Brown looking evergreen tree in a photographer's yard. Two christmas ago, I put a lone red ornament near the top. I waited two weeks before I mentioned it to him. He thought some kid put it there. It still sits in the tree and he loves it.

I live in a small beach town just twenty miles from a major city. I'm very tempted to join this swap but I'll do some research first.

I just received some adorable bird clips/mini clothes pins in another swap and it gave me the idea to make my own with the large clothespins for our clothes (yeah, DH already hates that the clothespin apron is now distinctly less than manly, birdy clips is going to make it so that he may never hang clothes on the line again).

Maybe I could make some for clipping a note onto the abandoned items...

Maybe I am getting too excited by this swap...

Hmmmm - maybe I am a bit of a crafting nerd...

If so, you're in good company!  ;D

I'm altering a book for one of my items (if it isn't what my partner's interested in abandoning, I'll just take it to the library here and abandon it myself). It's a big heavy thing, fancy-looking without my having to do much to it, that reminds me of the book from The Neverending Story. (imagine finding THAT book abandoned!)  :) It's an image-heavy book called "Voyages Into the Unknown," about explorers in history and frontier experiences around the world, and I'm leaving much of the imagery but turning it into a journal for the finder to use. My plan is to have it abandoned in the library amongt the historical adventure genre books, with an eye-catching note on the spine saying, "pick me". Then when the person pulls the book out, there will be a note on the cover saying something along the lines of,
Quote
I am not the property of this library.
I am YOUR property. This book is yours. I have always been yours. No one else needs to know I exist.
I need you to help me escape from here: smuggle me outside, take me with you, and fill my pages with stories of your own adventures. It will be worthwhile.
Because more adventures and benevolent surprises are coming. This book is the first sign. The next signs will appear shortly. You just have to look for them...or create them.
May your voyages into the unknown reward your spirit richly. The journey begins now
.

No contact information or explanation at all, just a mystery and potential adventure for someone who was planning on just reading about other people's adventures (considering the section of the library where they were browsing). I'm still tossing around ways of wording it. I want to promote paranoia-in-reverse -- the sense that someone or some force is conspiring to shower you with blessings.  :)

I have no follow-up ideas for it, in spite of saying so in the note...but the person finding the book doesn't know that, and will hopefully have their eyes open to more of the strange, delightful things that usually cross their path unnoticed, as being part of this covert book-finding/smuggling. Not to mention a lot of people have never considered "defacing" a book by writing in it or having it repurposed; that could be a new experience for the finder, too, which a lot of us crafty types take for granted. (The book is a mass-produced compilation volume, relatively recent, so its alteration/destruction isn't a loss to the book/information world)

Also, I'm going to delete the words from here once the book is sent out, so the finder can't google the phrases and end up here.  ;)

Not to encourage paranoia, but google can hold onto stuff for a long time.  If anonymity is important, I'd delete/reword it before google gets its grubby little spiders on it. ;)

Yeah, the more I think about it, the more I'm realizing that if they're going to go to the trouble of searching for it online, then more power to them in blowing my cover. In the case of this item, I'm not as concerned with anonymity (my fingerprints are smudged all over it  :D)  as with trying to keep a potentially magical experience from entering the domain of the explainable/mundane...But that will be out of my hands. And even if they do trace it back here, to this ordinary, unsuccessfully-sneaky person who made it, I guess it's still a mysterious enough experience if they find that I live hundreds of miles away.

Yeah, I would like to find the book as well. I am going to have to check my library just in case!

I think for this swap it sounds like a great idea for the crafter to leave whatever directions with their art that they would like to convey to the finder. This could be nothing (just art), an email/website, a "write a note and hide this book for another to find," a poem, anything. And it will be the receivers job to find a place to hide the craft. That leaves it open for anything I think!

This gallery will be amazing! I can't wait to see what people craft and where people "covertly" drop the art!

Anyone start planning or crafting yet - or are you waiting to be partnered.  I have made some possible prototypes - but have a list of other ideas.  I may make a variety of things from the list or 5 of one thing, not sure yet.

oh I've made a bunch of half baked plans in my head, and then left them, made more, and on and on lol.

The one thing that seems consistent is I keep imagining making some kind of container (maybe a little paper macher?) and something for inside.  A discovery within a discovery.

No hard plans yet. I have a few things I need to get finished before I can start the real brainstorming. So far the random thoughts have been drawing/screen printing oriented lol. We'll see if that comes to anything.

Ohhh - like an uber-sophistocated Easter egg type deal?  Are you going to break someone's heart, by forcing them to break open a little piece of art to get to the beauty within?

I have ideas and some themes that I'm thinking of, to try and inspire with words as much as art.  ~Works well with collage ;) ~
examples:
if nothing ever changed, we wouldn't have butterflies
embrace imperfection
yes you can
enjoy the journey
let it be
happy everything
live the life you've imagined

I have many ideas that seem like good candidates for this swap, but I was wondering, could I be specific about where exactly do I want my art to be "dropped"?
I was thinking about making a series of paintings with a flowing theme, they will be small and have a little hanging ribbon. I would like to have those painting placed in the back of the door of bathroom stalls. Some stalls here have a hook to hand your purse while you use the bathroom. To sort of turn the bathroom stall into an art gallery and the visitor could admire it and make take it home if it pleases.
What do you think?

That's an awesome idea!! And taking pictures of the placement wouldn't be too hard at all since it would be rather strange for a random person to be spying on you in a bathroom stall.  :D

heard on the radio today about a Toronto artist who has been involved in a 'love lettering project' writing love letters and poems, decorating them, and leaving them in airmail envelopes around town, she's done a few different projects within this.  Sounded great and a lot like our swap.

I wasn't thinking of making an outer piece that you have to break, but that is a totally cool idea.  I think it might hurt my psyche too much though.  I was thinking of something like a paper machier globe that is in two halves, and then binds together with ribbon, then you open it up and something else is inside.  Of course I always forget that I really hate the slimy texture of paper machier.

I was thinking about public restrooms too, and whether anyone would be willing to take something with them that they found there! The hanging artwork would be nice because it is totally out-of-the-way and most likely, several people would get to see and appreciate it, though most still wouldn't want to touch it ("Did the person who put this here hang it up before they used the toilet, or after?  :o"  ;D). In the end, it might end up being a "thank you" gift for the janitor who cleans that bathroom.  :)

I started tinkering with an altered tin idea. But that's about as far as that idea has sprouted: an altered tin.  :D Maybe filled with a long, accordion-folded paper attached to the inner base, but I'm not sure what to write on it or decorate it with. I have a lot of driving to do the next few days, so I'll brainstorm on the road. Also, I'm thinking about attaching magnets to the back of it, so that it can be slapped onto any metal surface in passing.

Well now...

I think the bathroom stalls is a great idea. I would not take the art with me, but it would certainly make me smile while using the facilities. But who said the finder has to take it with them?

Even the paper cranes are a great idea. What if in a park someone had six or so paper cranes hanging from a tree?

These all sound fabulous! I am soooo going to keep checking on the art I abandon to see if anyone finds it.

Wow, I am really excited!!!!

On a side note, I have all partners preliminary matched. I was wondering if anyone might be adverse to extending the signup range by two days. We have a new member who wants to join but her official one month membership will only be on the 17th (thus eligible for the swap on the 17th). I hate to deny her for two days. I can send out partners on the 15th anyhow for people to get started excluding one person (probably me) to be match with the new member.

I'm OK with that too.

Instead of bathroom stalls, if there is the ick factor, then what about the handles of stairwell doors - a bit of a reward for people who took the stairs rather than the elevators.

Or change room stalls in stores?

I love the ideas of magnets to stick it to metal surfaces.

Remember to identify the objects too as a lot of places have policies about mystery packages and you don't want to cause undue fear of terrorism/bombs, etc

Calluna,
Why do you think that?
I dropped many zines, postcards and even small toys (plastic dinosaurs with a tag saying "please give me a good home") in bathrooms, mostly around my campus library and I would go check on them about an hour later and every item was already gone! I always place them around lunchtime, because I know a lot of people take theyr bathroom breaks after lunch and the janitor wont be doing his rounds untill afte 6pm.
I favor stalls and changing booths more because I think people feel safer to take something with them when no one else is looking. I guess thats why its also a good idea to leave things in library shelves or between the pages of a book. There is this sense of intimacy between the piece and the finder.
Once I tried to leave some papiermache sculptures in a popular park, but the day passed and only one was taken! They had a tag on them indicating that the figure belonged to whoever found it, but people just looked at them and passed them by. I think since it was so visible they were too shy to touch them. Alas, the only one who went to a new home that day was picked up by a kid.

I think that's an interesting thought, when choosing where to leave it, that too exposed might discourage people from investigating and taking the object, and that things that look like installations might not be taken home.  I'm thinking about bike baskets, and bus shelters at present.

Calluna,
Why do you think that?

Because of germ-phobic people and the reputation of public restrooms as being the nastiest of places (around here, at least). Most times I'm in a public restroom I hear and see people freaked out about simply being there; they hold their breath and are vocally terrified of having their children touch anything. Of course, some places are cleaner than others, but if a place is full of flies and there's at least one toilet that remains unflushed/clogged with someone's bodily waste sitting there in the open all day, (this has been the norm in my experience), it fuels the sense that disease/germs are festering there. I'm glad to hear you've had a good experience, though; I feel better about doing the same now!

I went on a hike Sunday and scouted out a couple good wilderness-y spots to leave things. I need to remember to start bringing art-to-abandon with me when I go places; my good intentions haven't led to any action yet.  :D

I remember walking in the neighbourhood before and one home had some funky trees, and I noticed that some of the stones and gravel around the tree base (and in holes in the tree) were not natural, but were cute carved  or painted stones with faces - that maybe a an idea too.  At the very least, this may be on my own personal to do list.

To add my two cents to the bathroom convo, I just wanna say if I found a piece of art in a bathroom, regardless of the conditions of the bathroom, I think I'd still think it was an inspiring find...maybe more so if the bathroom was unkempt. Though that being said placement would be key - I can't say I'd be eager to pick up a piece of art if it was sitting in a pile of dirty paper towels or some such, but hanging on the hook on the door wouldn't worry me at all.

And painting rocks to abandon is definitely something that crossed my mind. The only draw back is unless you are able to mail the rocks priority it might be a little iffy on shipping cost. Though I suppose you could do small rocks.

Anyone else planning on making extras of their art to abandon themselves? I know I am  :D This would make an awesome craftalong too.

What I was thinking of was manufacturing my own "rocks" - making a form with mesh and covering it with 2 part resin clay like Apoxie Sculpt - light weight, and durable.

Ohh God I hadnt even thought of dirty bathrooms! The ones I visit (to drop art) are usually in my campus, libraries or schools, wich I can thankfully say, are well kept and clean! I leave them in the door hook if it has one or on top of the plastic cover of the toilet paper (dont know what they are called). I wouldnt leave anything on top of the toilet or uncovered toilet paper, or anywhere near a trashcan! But I see your point.

Scouting for spots to drop is a very important part of it! It will lead to action once you are sure youve found the right place for your art! Sometimes I pass by a spot for weeks before being sure that the "right" person will find it, it makes the letting go part so much easier!

Quote

I found some beautiful rocks that were perfect for "skipping rocks" the other day, but taking another glance at them I thought about painting on them. So I took six stones home, about the size of the palm of a hand, they were around 3"-5" thick and I wanted to see how much shipping might cost. They fit into the smallest of an USPS Flat Rate box, wich costs a bit less than $6.00 to ship!
I suggest you look around for stones that fit into these Flat Rate boxes, the cost of shipping wont be too bad regardless of the weight!

Well so far my swap ideas are down to 3 proyects, I guess I will be able to choose wich idea to go with when I know where they will be headed.

Our local paper had an article a few years ago about the nastiest and the nicest publicly accessible bathrooms in the city a few years ago.  This made me think about that.

If I was going to abandon in a public washroom, it probably would be ones in nicer hotels, libraries, nice business buildings, and renovated large malls - from my experience in this city, those are the nicer ones.

I think I may consider abandoning along some of the large parks and hiking trails near home, or perhaps places like the local large art gallery, near the art college, or parliament buildings, my old university, library, or my hospital if I am abandoning indoors.  If I get outdoor items and don't abandon them all outdoors, I may tuck one in an indoor planter or something and see if it gets found.

I have been thinking about where to abandon the art I receive. Our city is pretty small- but we do have a thriving farmers market, so I was thinking I would attach some to the pavilion on Saturday morning before the market starts. We also have a city wide sculpture tour where the statues change every year. I think it would be fun to hang some art on those.  I was also thinking of abandoning some art near the office of our local art and event newspaper to try and get a mention on their website or facebook page- like this covert art abandoner :) http://volumeone.org/news/1/posts/2012/05/09/3080_chippewa_river_monster_2_nessie_returns

The ideas in here are steamrolling out of control with fabulousness. I encourage everyone to discuss ideas with their partners as well. The swap requires 5 SMALL items plus an additional SMALL for the partner. If you would like to provide more or larger items, please discuss this with your partner. I do not want anyone to hold back, but even a pipe cleaner flower to stick in the ground is just as lovely!

I love both the real painted rocks idea and the faked out rocks.  Only thought is they either need to be obvious enough to be discovered, or you need to be ok with the idea that they could be out there an unknown time before eventual finding.

I think I'm impatient enough that I'll want my things to be discovered fairly easily.  A very kooky idea for transoforming a household object into an art object/container came to me last night, and I need to wait a few days and revisit the idea in order to determine if it was late night hallucination or doable and cool. :)

Unfortunately, I've had to drop out of the formal swap, but like Smmarrt I will be continuing along with the discussion and doing some abandonments here. I can come up with a couple things that would be okay to send, but not 6 in the next month. Once I get a couple of okay things completed everything else I do is going to become rather mediocre and last-minute.  :-[ It might be good enough as a random-act-of-kindness for a random stranger who chooses to pick it up, but not good enough to send to a fellow Craftsterer.

Aww calluna - I have to admit I am disappointed.  I enjoy your contributions to the thread and you certainly have me thinking.  I was really looking forward to seeing your contributions.  I also think you underestimate yourself!  Or you are too hard on yourself!

I in no way think I am any kind of a special artist, but I feel I could craft something that could give someone a little glow of surprise and happiness if they were to find it.  I hope that counts enough, because if anyone is ever expecting a masterpiece from me, I think they would be sorely disappointed!  But I like the process of the making, and how this discussion, and this forum in general pushes me to try new things, and I see this as a fun challenge to stretch myself further.

The new (reused) whiteboards in my craft room are scribbled full of little ideas for this swap.

Thanks, I'll definitely show what I do make and release, and I'm hoping I can get a picture of the flags I'm making when they're in place.

Hmm, cork mice might be floatable...the possibilities! I don't know about putting them in a free-flowing body of water, but if there's a big pond in a park where you could send something out into the water without everyone seeing you, that would be good. Something floating will eventually wash up at someone's feet (ETA: make sure it isn't so small that an animal might ingest it!  ;)). What about a little raft made of corks (hot-glued together and/or connected with skewers/toothpicks), and a tiny stuffie perched on top of it? There's a Richard Scarry illustration of a mouse on a pole raft I'm thinking of.  :)

ok, I shouldn't but I just did.
I thought, six... I can do six. as long as it fits in the flat rate box.
What's an art major to do, LOL! :D

And now, decisions... and wading thru supplies!

I think I want to tie tags on my stuff, direct people to a blog post so they can comment if it is found. Maybe a different post (hence a different web page) for each item.

I love the idea of art set free to float! You could even put something in a ziplock bag with air and set it adrift. It reminds me of this awesome yarn bomb in Australia that always makes me smile that was posted on craftster https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=375470.0

oooh floating!  what if you drew/paint/whatever on paper then had it laminated then made it into little origami boats?  it would be cool to release a bunch at once, or drop them in various fountains around town!

That would be so cute - I loved Richard Scarry when I was growing up.  That would be true abandonment - leaving it up to nature where it eventually ends up.  Makes me think of those message in a bottle letters.  There is one gentleman here in Canada that does that routinely and has a collection of all the letters he has received from all over the world of people who have responded to him.

So since I'm wanting to do art abandonment ongoing, I have created a facebook page.  It is in it's infancy but I would love for this to be an place for the finders to post that they did find their art as well as posting pictures of our completed art.  The facebook page is simply "Abandoned Art 4 U"

A very kooky idea for transoforming a household object into an art object/container came to me last night, and I need to wait a few days and revisit the idea in order to determine if it was late night hallucination or doable and cool. :)

I once saw a quote that essentially sai 'everything seems like a good idea at 3 in the morning.' Lol. I hope that your idea does turn out to be one of pure genius rather than pure tiredness :).

Partners are up!

Please please let me know if I made any mistakes (not willing to ship internationally, trade with this one craftster far too often, indoor/outdoor does not work, etc) as I can still switch it up. We have one group of three due to the odd number of people.

Most importantly, let's craft!

This reminds me of one of my favorite holidays in Thailand- Loy Krathong.  http://leapfeetfirst.blogspot.com/2010/11/celebrating-loy-krathong.html

Each year Thai's release small floating flower arrangements into the Chao Phraya river to ask for blessing and as an offering to the river. It is so beautiful seeing thousands of floating arrangements bobbing on the water. It would be cool to incorporate that into an art abandonment project- obviously made of biodegradable materials :)

I'm sooo excited for this swamp!  Even more exciting is my awesome partner puamelia and I are both wanting to use upcycled/repurposed items for our art!

I'm playing with upcycling water bottles in "glass" looking vases.  I plan on collaging the cardboard for something of a mixed media find.

Okay bad joke, my table is empty. I need to narrow down all the ideas after hearing such great ones in the thread. So many good ideas here to draw from.

So are we going to show/discuss our progress here? I like the idea, but I know that is not typical of a swap...though this is no typical swap  :D I already got started on mine yesterday  :) The idea's been germinating over the last week or so. Hopefully it'll turn out as good as it looks in my head.

Jmiller, my work table is barely better -- just a bunch of odds and ends waiting to be transformed.

SheepBlue, my partner and I have been doing just that via email. I think when I have something a little more concrete I wouldn't mind sharing it here. You're right it's not a normal swap. :)

Well, if we're sharing, I did some playing around while waiting for partners for the Back to Hogwarts swap, and made these champagne cork mice:

Based on something I saw on Pinterest: http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&ie=UTF8&prev=_t&rurl=translate.google.com&sl=auto&tl=en&twu=1&u=http://www.iiiopox.ru/archives/3 (http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&ie=UTF8&prev=_t&rurl=translate.google.com&sl=auto&tl=en&twu=1&u=http://www.iiiopox.ru/archives/3)

The web page is a translation, but it's pretty easy to work out.  I left off the legs, though, and curled the tail up.  I'm pretty happy with them for a small project, usually most of my "recycled" crafts don't turn out particularly well... :/

Some poly clay house creatures I cooked up yesterday....kind of forgot them in the oven which resulted in a nice burnt patina that I'm working into the design. Not sure that it'll be my only art sent...and need more work on the layering. But it makes me happy so far.

Hi all!
So the tags that I'm going to make are going to read something like this:

One side:
Take Me I'm Yours!

Flip side:
A FREE RANDOM GIFT OF ART FOR YOU
Abandoned Art encourages artists and crafters to leave art in various locations around the globe for a lucky, unsuspecting person to find - like YOU!  Use it, give it as a gift or share with someone that you care about.  If this piece of art is not your taste, leave it for someone else to find.  In joy, Enjoy!  If you adopt this piece of artwork, please consider letting us know where you found your art and your feelings about finding art by dropping us a note at:   [email protected]  or   http://www.facebook.com/pages/Abandoned-Art-4-U/102317959917071  or search "Abandoned Art 4 U" on facebook

If anyone has any suggestions to add or subtract text...lemme know, I'm all ears...well and tacky glued dyed fingers as well! ;)

How fun! I like it. I'm trying to imagine myself in the scenario of finding the item and reading the note, with no knowledge of art-abandonment, and whether I'd be confused in finding the item or so surprised that I wouldn't be able to concentrate on what the note says in the moment. I would be thinking, "Oh no, is this another hidden-camera TV prank?" (especially in Southern California, where most of these take place...though you never know where in the U.S. John Quiniones is going to pop up and ask you why you did what you just did!  :D) So I think it's good that you explained it all clearly.

I think the order and the wording are good; I wouldn't add any additional text. Consider moving "If you adopt this piece..." down into a new paragraph, on its own, at the bottom of the card, and making "In joy, enjoy!" stand out in some way (bigger, different color, etc). That way if they're just scanning for the key points and not wanting to really read in that moment, the gist that they get is "this is for you, and it's okay".

That's so funny that you think hidden camera! ;) I'm actually in Production and that had me in fits of laughter!
Cool, thanks for the feedback!
I DO like the idea of making the paragraphs!  My wording was either going to be the "adopt this art" or "give the art a good home".
I want everyone to feel free to use this for their abandonments as well.

Okay, the QR sticker mention made me want one (I love secret squirrel things) and I headed to google and found this site: http://www.qrstuff.com/

Sure enough, I was able to generate a QR code (free) for my site -- it can be read off the screen and it's printable (yep, I tested it).

I think I might set up a special page only visible to those who have the URL, provide some info and include a "contact" form right on that page (so they can say how they found the piece or whatever).

coolio!

Yup, that's the site I used. I put them on the back of my business cards, and since I'd already paid for the upload, I got a pack of stickers for free. Vistaprint give away lots of free promotional products and that's where I got them from. But now I want to start using my likify qr code instead, so I have to get rid of all these codes lmao

I'm headed off to the dollar store today looking for some ideas of how to make my ideas come alive.  I love the dollar store for unconventional supplies, like little plastic bowls that might become part of a spaceship!

I love the secrety ways of the qr code :)

I think I'm not going to put a link in mine, so I don't obsessively check it and get disappointed if no one writes back.  Plus it sounds like the kind of thing that I should challenge myself to do - just release them into the world with no expectation of knowing what happens after that.

But I'll be fascinated to know what other people chose to do and what messages you get back.

I like the idea of attaching a note, though I think I'd want mine to be short and to the point. Maybe I'd leave a email address or something to let the finder get in contact with me if they wanted to, it would definitely be cool to hear back the responses of the finders. The way my pieces are shaping up, they're kinda getting creepy...cool? So I'm wondering what type of person would pick them up.

Also in note of the QR codes....um I hate to say it but while I understand the concept of how they work, how does one scan them to read them? I'm usually not so obtuse I swear but yeah...if I found some art and there was a QR code I'd love the art but probably not bother to figure out how to read the code.

Especially good since the abandonment will most likely happen coming up on Halloween!  :) I was looking at the cute feet on your houses and thought about that plastic coating liquid (Plasti-Dip?) that microjivvy used for part of an altered tin (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=409388.0)...it seems like if you dipped the feet in that stuff, and let it drip/harden downward toward the "toes", it would make them into really good "claws"...I hope that makes sense...

Hah I've been kind of stuck on what to do for the feet. My original thought was to cover it in another lighter layer of clay, but I like the idea of the plasti-dip claws  :D Though I'm suddenly getting the thought of hot glue, layering it so they're kind of knobbed and evil looking  ;D We'll see!

I don't have a smartphone either - but that is more because I am waiting for my current contract to expire.  I was admiring my sister's Samsung Galaxy the other day though.  I was going to package mine in little party gift bags with a note in an envelope attached with one of the bird clippies I made (or butterfly, or leaves)

No pic here, but they are on my blog (http://onyxnox.blogspot.ca/2012/08/now-i-have-flock.html)

I am working out in my mind some ideas and going from there.  I picked up some paper materials yesterday from the bookstore section of the library that I am excited to play with.  My sister is in town, from Singapore, this week, so I may not get much of a chance to advance in anything until she is gone.

Here's a progress shot on one of my art ideas, magnetic mousetrap note clip. They have been painted but now I have to decide what type of design. These are just mock ups. I like the lobster but I'll need a different one. This one is too difficult to cut out. I may go with a coffee theme. I can't decide.

I did make this to abandon. Some kid will love getting it and I can drop it here somewhere near our Carousel.

awww I wish I found that little dragon somewhere!

A coffee theme could be great, to leave on the outside table at a coffee joint :)  Only problem with restaurants is people might turn found things in to lost and found without paying attention to the 'this is for you, take it' tag.

I found small round cardboard boxes with lids at the dollar store and bought 7, planning to decorate them and put something in them.  Working on a space and alien theme.

The knight and dragon are cute! That'd be fun to find abandoned.

So I've been working slowly over the last week. Here was my crafting desk at the beginning...

And here's my desk now (apologies for the crappy lighting)...

And one piece I'll share with you guys; I decided this is one I'm going to keep for myself to abandon since it's pretty heavy but I like it. I feel like it needs maybe one more element...not sure what yet.

SheepBlue- maybe add something to the end of the red string? Or maybe another pop of color behind the keys? I love the rusted look of your piece.

After reading what everyone else is doing, I am afraid my creations are going to be too plain. I bought some 3x3 canvases at Michael's and I've been messing around with them- adding texture and colors.

I haven't decided how I am going to finish them yet...

Ooh those look awesome UF! I love the front two, though that may just be because I can see them a bit better. Keep going with the canvases! I told myself to keep pushing what I'm working on, worst case scenario you hate it and can cover it up with a layer of something and have a more interesting complex texture?

Are most people making big pieces???  Mine are quite small.  I am done 4 today.  I am contemplating the rest and have an idea for another item that is similar but different, so will be trying a few of those too.  I pretty much spent all day today, after walking the dog, in my craft room working on this swap.  Had a LOT of frustrations, but generally it has been productive!

Lady LilyBell, neat technique! Are you planning to do anything else with it?

Onyxnox - I am doing a mix of small pieces and medium-small pieces. I am trying to keep shipping costs in mind, but I wouldn't worry too much about sizes as long as you're happy with what you're making  :)

I'm keeping my stuff around a 4x6/5x7 size or smaller. I figured that size would be quick to pull out of a bag to stash it somewhere.

Most of the things I have made are pretty small. I made a few of each that I have made thus far becaues they are so small and it was easy to make a few at once in about an hour or two.

I keep thinking of where my things should be hidden. And then think that I should really just let my partner figure out her own hiding spots for myself. I wonder if she will come up with some of the same ideas.

Physical size of mine will likely be "medium."

I say that without knowing what I'm making (will start on this swap in a couple of days).  ;D

I am working on medicine bottle/spice jar size. Literally. I now have medicine bottles since we are all some form of sick. Prior to that I was working on furukake (japanese seaweed sprinkles for rice) jars which I zentangled/doodled on and was going to give them arms and legs and partial clothing to "doll" them up. I want to either give them a message inside for the clear jars, or have them hold or be tagged with a message. I really don't want to wrap them, just want them to be there.... So far none of them are complete. I will try to post a progress shot soon.

bottle baby in progress. wearing a purple skirt. Need to attach the arms and legs. The jar in front of her is what a plain jar looks like.

bottle baby... you can see zentangles a little better. thinking about making another doll with the lightbulb.

bottles everywhere, waiting to be repurposed!

I may or may not use altoid tins... still working things out.

I love the recycled medicine bottles because we're all a little sick, very clever and compassionate message.  And I had to chuckle because my space and alien themed pieces are on the idea that 'we're all a little alien.' :)

I don't have a theme per se.  I have just been crafting something rather dear to my heart lately and making each one in a variety of ways.  I have cut, pasted, glued, stamped, embossed, inked, rivetted my little heart out the past few days.  I actually will end up with about a dozen in the end and will pick out my favourite 6 to send.  Or more.  They are rather teeny tiny though, in comparison.  I am making little notecards to go with them, and will package them up to an extent as well, to make them more conspicuous for abandoning.  Just thinking on the note to include.

Aw thrifty, so sorry to hear of your loss.... My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I have also been lagging, lost in a swirl of long work hours & the start of school. I finally got enough sleep last night, thank goodness for the weekend. I will be trying to finish up some research for microbiology today, then I can zentangle the last 2 bottles and start attaching limbs.

Finished my last project, got back from an out-of-town conference, and now, Leonard Cohen and I are working on six seven (in case something goes horribly wrong with one of them) pieces.

I am not convinced these will be the pieces I actually send (some logistics left to be worked out), but I'm mostly satisfied with how they're going.

But I'm somewhat stuck until I get my arse out of my chair and pick up one supply item at Home Depot.  Mr. Cohen refuses to run errands.

With that note, I also opened up a gallery. I will include the link here but post it on the first page as well. I need to get moving on my ideas.

I have two close-to-completed things (one needing permanent affixing of hair and the other permanent affixing of limbs), 4 in various stages of doodling, missing limbs and half-baked ideas, and several empty bottles competing for the final line-up. May not be able to get fully back into it till after the 20th. Midterms, pfft!!!  I will try to get a progress shot up tho! :) gnite!

I am probably sending Thursday or Friday.  I need to take some pics of what I made for myself, an am not 100% satisfied with some of the cards I made, so may remake some.  Otherwise, most of the packaging is done, and all the items are done.  I went a wee bit overboard in making things so will be sending more than agreed upon.

Four items done! The senders are inspiring to get moving.

As I was walking down the street the other day I saw this item from a distance. TOTALLY thought someone had abandonned a pretty bouquet or piece of art because I picked up on the colors. When I approached, it was definitely a cupcake wrapper with clown heads, trash that someone had left behind:

I wonder if this swap is influencing what I want to see... I swear it looked like art from far away! And without my glasses! The clowns could definitely be tiny flowers. I think.

The clowns creep me out, but initially, on a quick glance, the plastic does look like a black glass or shiny ceramic to me, and the lighter crumbs look like glitter.

Now that first exam is done, I'll be concentrating on this swap, hoping to send early next week.  Need to work on my tags.

:-[ I shipped. Thought "oh, I don't need to take a photo of the parcel with it's postage paid sticker and the receipt sitting next to it, because I have the grumpy clerk, so I'll just take a photo of the receipt when I get home." Only when I got home I pulled everything out of my pockets on to the table and the paper 'rubbish' got 'cleaned' into the bin by an overzealous big person setting the dinner table.

If it doesn't make it to fancybutch I'll remake and send again.

Progress note:
I finished off the ones that need hair early this morning, assembly-line style, when my daughter came in and said they all need mouths.... and proceed to draw a couple of mouths on with a red Sharpie. She then named them all, and we wrote on their bottoms.
So, as soon as the glue dries, they will be packed for shipping first thing Monday morning.
I think we done good, because we will miss them a lot!

I know - wouldn't that be adorable???  Or little elves climbing up a random hedge?  Think about it... it could be a swweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet swap.

Then think about a Valentines one - randomly leaving bits of arty love throughout the world at large....

Oh the possibilities, it could be so much fun! After Valentine's Day...Saint Patty's Day - imagine finding a tiny leprechaun hiding on the Lucky Charms shelf in the grocery store!

I am happy to say I sent today! And I've come to the conclusion that I either need to buy a postal scale or only make items that will ship in the flat rate boxes so I'm not surprised by shipping costs  :o.

LOL - that would be too cute, a little leprechaun - or a pot of gold!

Hi everybody!  I'm a little late to this party, but I'm happy to be here.  I get to be microjivvy's angel, and I've been working all day on the goodies I will send her way.  I hope to have them in the mail on Saturday.  I've enjoyed looking at the things that are in the gallery so far, and I can't wait to see what everyone else made!

And who could ask for a lovelier angel?   :)

My pieces will be winging their way to Smeddley tomorrow (we got this all worked out too late in the day for me to ship today).

Smeddley, I will warn you -- the packaging for my pieces is a bit... "creative"... I actually included "unpacking" instructions.  :D

Well, it is now winging its way to you.  It's not completely fragile, but there's one part that would be easily kinked/bent. Shipping one wouldn't be a problem, but six in one box... I obviously didn't think ahead.  :D

Lol, I didnt consider shipping either, making 6 bottles, 5 of which were glass, across an ocean. It's there! It made it! I'll be going to tube post office tomorrow.
