We have a sender!
GALLERY (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=409617.0)

Hello all!  Who's up for the ripping excitement of another round of hand-carved rubber stamps?!  Doesn't matter if there are a few or many participants in this swap, it will be a heck of a lot of fun.  Come join!  Yay!

Rubber stamps can be made of carving rubber (can be purchased online or at a craft store like Michaels) or from erasers (you’ll need a new one of good quality).  Scroll down for some answers to frequently asked questions.

For this swap you will be making one stamp for each partner assigned to you (optional 2 to 10 partners---See Frequently Asked Questions below for more info about partner assignment.).

You’ll have 4 weeks for designing/carving, but of course you can send out as soon as you’re ready.  It's a good idea to go about purchasing supplies as soon as you sign up, so you can make sure you've got everything you need.  :)

POSTING PIX OF STAMPS RECEIVED
It is OH so important to post pictures of the amazing stamps you receive!  This is the best way in the world to let it be known how special it is that you've received a wonderful treasure of someone else's creativity!    :D
Please post pictures/scans of your received stamps in the gallery (or make arrangements with your partner to do so).

ANSWERS TO FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

How do I know what "level" I am?
Here’s a rough guideline:
  • Beginner: You’ve never done this before and consider yourself, umm, in more of an experimental stage.  Perhaps you don’t own any tools, erasers, or carving medium.
  • Intermediate: You’ve done this before, but are hoping to improve your technique.
  • Advanced: You are mostly satisfied with your technique.

What size stamps am I making?
Just be smart.  Larger than 3x3 inches probably wouldn't be typical---though is totally acceptable---, but smaller than 1x1 would probably be too small,---of course it may be that quality makes up for size, so the rule isn't for sure.  If you have any concerns about the size of what you're making, PM your receiving partner, or post your question in this thread.  Be sure and check out the links to previous swaps to get an idea what others have done.

How are partners assigned for this swap?
  • Participants will be organized into swapping groups according to their questionnaire answers.
  • Groups will have 3 to 6 participants each.
  • Individual participants might be part of multiple groups.
1)A person will be assigned no more partners than the max partners they stated they would accept in the questionnaire.
2)A person will be assigned partners as close as possible to the ideal number they stated in their questionnaire.

What about extras?
In this swap more than others I've seen, people may tend to send extra stamps.  *THIS IS NOT REQUIRED NOR SHOULD IT BE EXPECTED.*  Sometimes people send along a "goof-up" stamp, or stamps they made just because they were having too much fun to stop.  Or even some small extra supplies or doo-dads.  For this specific swap, extras are okay.  But neither need anyone feel at all guilty that they only send the swap requirements.

It's a good idea to communicate with your partner about extras.  And please remember that if you choose to send extras without communicating with your partners, they have no obligation to send you any extras themselves.  :)

How do I know if the stamp I made is good enough?
:-*  This is a swap for crafters of all levels.  But if you’re concerned about your stamp, a good rule of thumb is that if you like it enough to wish you could keep it yourself, than you’ve hit the spot.   Make something that you like; no doubt your partners will, too!  No one is expecting perfection. :)

How do I ship the stamps?
DO NOT SHIP THESE IN A STANDARD ENVELOPE.  Let's please try to avoid the crying and the weeping and the sad sad sounds of people who send stamps in standard envelopes only to realize too late that when they are run through the postal machines they get caught and have their guts ripped out.  Mangling and crushing and breakage of beautiful little rubber stampies!   :'(

These stamps will be too thick to just send in standard envelopes.  They will need to be packaged in bubble wrap envelopes, or other sturdy ways, and be handled as packages and not as letters.  DELIVERY CONFIRMATION REQUIRED, or MAILING RECEIPTS for international senders.   ;)

Do you know any tutorials?

Any more tutorials?
  • Google search "Stamp carving tutorials" for a bunch of tutes and images.
  • This craftster board  (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?board=381.0[/url) has fun samples of tutorial-less sample stamps as well.

What kind of carving rubber can I use?
This is personal preference.   :)
I wouldn't go so far as to warn anyone off of buying any one material.  There are just too many variables than to be all-or-nothing with carving materials.  The Speedball Master-Cut is crumbly and delicate, but it is great for fine details with light pressure and if you're mounting your stamp and careful with it, no problems.  When I first started, everyone told me to get the pink stuff (Speedy Carve) or the orange, grade A PZ Kut because they were the best - and I hated both of them!  Plus, stampeaz hasn't come out with a batch of PZ Kut for over a year.  Each material is different and better suited for different levels of details as well the preference of the carver.  I'd suggest taking everyone's opinion into account and trying out a few small pieces so you have a foundation idea of what you like to carve for what.  Then you know if you prefer solid or gummy, crumbly or rubbery, thick or thin, etc.  This swap might be a great chance to swap out a few pieces of different materials you have with your partners so you can try them without a huge investment.

If I use erasers, what kind of erasers should I use?
This is also personal preference.  Go for a mini shopping spree and pick up several types to try!  Many people recommend vinyl erasers, (not pink rubber ones), as they have less tendency to crumble.  You might try WalMart, or a dollar store, or any office supply store.

What tools do I use to carve?
Anything that will dig in with a clean cut.  Some suggestions:
  • Speedy brand carving tools.
  • Sharp sewing needles work great for fine detail-work.
  • X-acto blade knives.

Do I have to mount the stamps?
No.

How do I get the image on the carving material?
Some ideas:
  • Draw on it directly.
  • Draw it in pencil on something else and transfer it through rubbing.
  • Laser printer method:
Print out an image with a laser printer (found out the hard way that mine isnt!!) cut out image.. put face down on your rubber and lightly dab the back with a cotton ball dipped in nail polish remover (with acetone) ... then lift paper.... image will be on your carving medium!! great for letters as you then carve our whats on your stamp and then it stamps the right way!! great for a doofus like me!! :)

Remember, when carving text or lettering, to carve it backwards so it stamps forwards!  lol

;D ;D ;D  LETS GET CARVING!  ;D ;D ;D

Ooh. I've always wanted to try carving stamps. This might be the perfect swap for me if there will be other beginners and I won't have to feel like I might let my partners down. Sending my questionnaire today!  :)

Oh gods!

I'm already organizing one swap and in another... but its just stamps! I don't have the budget to buy more supplies... How expensive could erasers be?

Arg. It seems I might have to add a third swap to my list! Yikes!

In all of my 45-50 swaps, I don't think I've ever had the same partner twice. That is, of course, of including the pinterest swaps where I choose my own partners. So... of the 50 total swaps (5 of which are in progress, wow! never been full on swaps before), 47 have not been the ongoing type and I've had 47 different partners. Just a thought for you, ArtMom. Also a thought: damn, I've done a lot of swaps. I think at one point I was going to stop for a while but I don't think I ever went through with it.

It's always fun to have new partners.  I've made a note in my files.  :)

In the last few swaps I was accidently partnered with the same partner a few times, but actually that was kind of fun and we got to know each other better. It was a bit like the make-a-friend-swap ;-) So, for me it really doesn't matter in what group I am.

I just came back from a short holiday and I've been practicing my carving skills, can't wait for partners!

I've always wanted to try stamp carving so I'm really excited that this swap has given me an excuse. I bought some supplies to get started as I figured I should get some practice in before the swap. I'm hooked!!!  :o I absolutely love stamp carving. Here are my first 2 stamps. These are not my drawings, but now that I have some practice, I'll be carving my own designs.

I'm using speedy carve as that's the only thing I found at Michaels...  I can't wait for partners!!  ;D

Oh, wow, MyCuteZombies! Those stamps are great. You're probably better than I am and I've been doing it for 2 years now. Isn't C-ster great? I have been introduced to so many new crafts through this site. I'm glad I'm not the only one who has dived head first into a stamp swap without ever having done it before.

Thanks Jexx! I don't know why I haven't tried it before. I have short lived spurts where I'm obsessed with a certain craft. Next month it'll be something else.

I'll probably have 50 stamps laying around the house before the end of the month.  :-\

I'll be signing up within the next few days. It was actually following the original handcarved stamp swap that I first went out to get supplies to get carving and I loved it from the get go. I think my favorite stamp is still my tree stamp that I'd just drawn right onto the eraser and started carving.

Have any of you made a return address stamp? I did one a few years ago and I think the hardest part was transfering it over twice on different papers so I could get the proper mirror image.

This sign up period is going on forever!
Chibilightangel, I've never attempted anything with details as small as a return address stamp would need, though now that I think about it if I used all of the space on the right sized eraser I guess I could make it work. I might have to try it. Now to go find some erasers! We're off to see the K-mart, the wonderful K-mart of [r]OZ[well]...

I've been practicing my skills all evening. It's such relaxing work  :D

For smaller details, I prefer using a bigger surface, because then the surface is a bit sturdier and gives more grip for the smaller things. Only at the end I cut out the stamp.

Err, I am totally new with this. But it looks so fun, I just registered to hope I can join. I hope it is not a problem I do not own the materials yet, because I want to try. :D It probably will be a very... Basic stamp. But I am in, because of the fun! :D And I love to make things for other people!

Oh!  I wish you could!  Swap requirements are that you are a member for a month before you can sign up for your first swap...since signups close before that time, it looks like you'll be missing out on this round.   :'(  But chances are that it will be so much fun that we'll be hosting another one like it soon.  So keep your eyes peeled!

Meanwhile, be sure to check out the site---it's the best!  And get in your 15 required "posts", as well!  :)  Then as soon as your month is over you'll be able to jump into your first swap without any problem!   :D

Alright! Then I will be posting away then! :D
I am now looking at a stamp tutorial, but I can't see some things at that video. If I am correct, you can use a laser printer, and print out your picture, stamp it on the rubber, and rub it on the rubber.

Then I am quite stumped. Do you carve around the parts you want to be on the stamp? And then what? O.O Does anybody know where I can buy this materials in The Netherlands? That is where I live, you see? :)

I'm from Holland as well ;-) You can buy cheap and good erasers at the Action (26 cents). Real carving blocks are only found on the internet as far as I know, not in shops here.

For transferring the image on your carving material there are several methods;
- draw your image with pencil, put the image face down on your carving block and rub/draw over with your pencil.
- printed with a laser printer: put your image face down on your carving block and rub over it with nailpolish remover.
I think there are more ways to do this, but these (especially the 1st one) are my favorite.

You indeed carve around the parts you want on the stamp. Then just take your ink pad and test it. You can always carve more...Succes! (Just PM me if it doesn't work for you)

Power, mmmm, power!
The swap I'm organizing doesn't give me power. Easy not having to partner people but still, no power.  I'm glad you're taking advantage of it. Just, you know, don't like start literally stalking us since you have our addresses and stuff. Oh! I guess that IS a power I have, everyone's full details. Hmm...  ::)

Don't worry.  Actually stalking of houses and people isn't allowed in my job description.   ;D

But checking out pinterests and wists....and then deciding that I want to be partnered with every single one of you....now there's the rub!  lol

Here's the link to my pinterest:

And, silly me, I haven't filled it out enough.

Also, I just realized I haven't even filled in a questionnaire for myself!  Gonna have to do that, and then pin a bunch of samples of possible stamps I'd like to receive.   ;D

Can't wait for partner time.  This is going to be a fun swap!

I think this is the first time in all my 40+ swaps I've every been assigned a partner that I've had in a previous swap, but seeing as I have 5 partners not a big surprise, eh?

I just went through and made lists. I have pretty solid ideas for 2 of you. Funny: Every single one of my partners said some form of "Religious" for what they DIDN'T want.

I'm ready! I will be sending way ahead of schedule, I can feel it.

So, if I'm not so active in the thread for the next couple of days, I'm obviously......carving!

Sorry I've been missing for a while, but I was away on vacation. Back and finally getting finished making my way through eight pages of posts. (It's detouring through all the links that takes time!)

Oh! One of those envelopes is for me! :D

Looking over my list of partners again, it suddenly hit me what a complicated swap this must have been to organize! WideEyedLife, you must have some sort of elaborate wall chart to keep track of who's partnered with whom! Unless of course you've just done it all in your head, in which case I'm dumbstruck with awe. Either way it's a heck of a lot of work, and thanks again for taking it on!

Hee hee.  This is the first swap I've organized where I had to partner people---I'm not sure how it's usually done, but I for sure didn't partner people in any type of recognizable groups like I threatened to in the swap info at the top of this forum!  I just printed everyone questionnaires out and came up with some complicated algorithm to make sure everyone had exactly the same number of "ideal" partners they requested.  It was fun!  Helped a lot that some people were flexible in the number of partners they would accept.

It was fun to partner---but took me all evening!   :o

I couldn't resist the idea of another stamp swap...just had to get carving, so decided to organize myself!  lol

Well done indeed. Last round (that I organized 2 years ago, time flies) partnering was quite easy; most participants didn't want to send abroad, so I just made US groups, and an International/Europe group.

I'd be so in for a round 5 in a while. I love carving  :D

Yes, thanks you organizing. :D

I have done very limited carving in the past but I'm still having fun.

I went to Hobby Lobby and they had moo carving material on clearance so I bought a bunch. However, as I carve it is just crumbling a way. I'm afraid I have to wait until pay day and go buy the normal pink stuff and start over.  :'(

You guys are lucky. My HL doesn't carry carving material. :(

It's OK, I've decided after finishing my carvings for this swap that I prefer using erasers anyway, though all I've tried otherwise is the grey stuff.

I did that, too, so the ones that were less detailed I sent more stamps with. Quality vs quantity, ya know?

Still waiting on some supplies to arrive.  (The package has completed customs clearance, but I'm antsy for my stamp carving supplies!)

I have started on some stamps - just haven't completed them yet because my printer is not functioning correctly!

I finished my stamps tonight and am planning on sending tomorrow! I can tell I haven't carved stamps in a while - I drew my designs directly on the stamp material, and completely forgot that one of them should have been done backward. I stamped it and went "Aw man!!!" It was especially annoying because I didn't have much material left, so I decided to go with a different design.  ::)

My supplies have arrived!  It's odd because the seller on ebay sent by priority mail and it was cheaper than buying my supplies (carving rubber) locally with taxes.  Depressing, but what the heck.

Anyhow, just finished two of my stamps.  Need to work on the two other ones tomorrow and then the extra I'm sending!  (I have so many swaps to send and carve for! - I'm carving for the One Tiny Harry Potter swap too!)

I'm back from my hols now...and I went to Blades Rubber Stamp store in London today to pick up some speedball as I had a terrible time finding decent sized erasers to use. So now no excuse for not carving!

On another note, I've received the loveliest stamps from IdlersDesign so will post pics tomorrow! :D

I've been trying for days to get out to a suitable art supply store to buy some stamp carving rubber, because what I want to do for my last stamp is larger than will fit on a eraser. I finally managed to do it today, so we're back on track. I also bought a very cool precision X-Acto knife holder (http://www.fiskars.ca/Products/Crafting/Craft-Knives/Fingertip-Detail-Knife). I'll let you know if it works well.

I'm half-way through my last stamp, after my delay in getting the right rubber block. Of course I've gone and made it ridiculously large, so it's taking way longer to carve than I anticipated! >:( I think I'll be sending on Friday, and not a moment sooner.
