Details of swap: (copied from H&H round 1)

This is the Handspun & Handcrafts Swap!! This swap will pair up spinners and non-spinners (hereafter referred to as crafters, not because spinners are not crafters, but to keep things simple), to swap handspun and other crafts with each other.  Spinners will make beautiful yarn for their partners and Crafters will make beautiful crafts for their partners.    Please discuss with your partner to determine level of effort: as a general guideline, spinners will make a skein of yarn for their partner, and crafters will make one large and 2 small items for their partner (of course, both a "skein" and a "large/small item" are really relative terms, which is why you need to communicate with your partner). You can do more than this of course if you both agree to do so.

You will sign up either as a Spinner OR a Crafter, please use the appropriate questionnaire below.

If more crafters than spinners sign up, the swap will be limited to the number of spinners (and vice-versa). Participants will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis (sign up early!).

I am anticipating that there will be more crafters sign up than spinners. Therefore, spinners who have successfully completed at least one swap may choose to take two partners if desired, and crafters will be limited to one partner, to ensure that more people get a chance to participate.

I'm #1! Hell yeah I'm in on this. I was just at Hobby Lobby yesterday trying to figure out how to spend me gift cards and I was thinking "Man, I wish I was in a swap so I had real projects to plan around my $ spending." And now I do! Well, kind of. I guess this isn't really too much of a HL friendly swap, though. Whatever! I'm in!

jexxican...I'm in the same boat you're in, but I'll up you one.  I have extra time b/c I just had surgery, so I'll be home for a few weeks, and I have extra money in the form of a Michael's gift card that I can't spend till I feel up to going out of the house for any length of time.

I am excited for this swap though!

I would like to join this swap, but I'm going to throw it out there to the group before I go ahead and do it.  The thing is, I only have drop-spindles, and I really like to spin but I'm not so great at it yet, and I end up with smallish uneven skeins.  But I have heard some people say that they really like the less experienced "art yarn" type quality- and I also make my own batts and have tons of different fiber available to mix in.   So if anyone is wanting to receive some smaller chunky random yarns- let me know and I will definitely join.  Otherwise I will hold off and my feelings won't be hurt a bit. :)

It's like torture for me to keep checking the swap boards. I'm about to enter into my final semester of college, in which one of my classes is my senior project, aka, my solo show. It's going to be soooo time consuming and I don't want to flake. But, man, I'd be all over this like white on rice! I guess I'll just have to stalk and be envious!

So tempted.  I'm supposed to be taking a swap break, which I'm not good at, and I told the bf that I wouldn't sign up for more than one at a time.  But the one I'm signed up for now is a OTT, so I'll probably be done with that before sign ups for this even close.  Hmmmm.

I think if you feel too uncomfortable with your yarns you could sign up as an other crafter and send some of your batts to your sninning partner as part of the swap. Just a suggestion. I'm so glad there are so many people interested already! I forgot to look: is there a cap on how many swappers?

I caved in and sent my questionnaire. (yep, that didn't take long.)  I don't want to miss out on a chance to receive handspun yarn.  It'll just be motivation to finish up my other swap quickly and try to get some other projects done in the meantime.

I thought of that too, but I don't knit or anything, I just like to process and spin fiber :) Thanks for the suggestion though.  Like I said, I won't be disappointed if I don't join the swap, I just never know what to do with my yarns once I spin them so they pile up!

Everyone should join!!! This should be a pretty low stress swap plus we have a month a crafting time. JOIN!!!! lol I'm glad there is so much interest  ;D

Jexx- I'm capping it at 20 unless someone volunteers to co-organize. This is my first time organizing.

bananaleg- Thanks, I loved spinning that yarn :)

CamOovas- I know I would LOVE to receive some batts.

I for one listed specific crafts I'd love to get and links to pintrest boards pertaining to that craft for ideas. I'm signed up as a spinner, but i also knit & crochet and like most crafters, I rarely get around to crafting for myself so I wouldn't mind receiving either. :)

You should totally join. People ask for both specific items and give out general ideas. I've swapped with you before and anyone who got you as a partner would be lucky!

so my questionnaire wasn't very specific, but once we're partnered, I'll make sure that my partner knows what I can make / what I like. I was actually at work filling out the questionnaire (at the end of the day) and was a bit rushed. I've never used hand spun yarn before, and I'm really excited for this swap. :)

I'd like to join this one, but as I only spin natural (sheep) fiber in natural colours (I do dye sometimes but also only natural dyes, so no fancy colours) so I don't know if anyone would be interested...

I would most definitely be interested. Naturally dyed handspun yarn sounds lovely. Unfortunately, I'm signed up as a spinner. However, I really think you should sign up. I'm sure there would be someone interested in naturalor naturally dyed handspun.

Eep!  This is so tempting!  I have been out of the swap loop for so long... I'm having withdrawals! I will have to seriously think about this one. I just learned to crochet, so I would LOVE some hand spun yarn... but I just moved 6 months ago so most of my craft supplies are in storage.  I will have to ponder if the craft supplies I have on hand are enough to make a few awesome things.

@Zombie_Queen I should have mentioned on my questionnaire that I'm fine shipping to Canada because technically it's not shipping "over seas" lols and generally shipping to Canada is only about a dollar more than shipping anywhere in the states.

If I read the swap description correctly, you are looking for any type of crafter.  I have some ideas for dimensional artwork that I'd love to have some beautiful yarn to play with creating.  I don't know, however, if that's what you mean by "handcrafts."

Unfortunately, I don't spin, crochet, or knit.  In fact, I can barely braid, so if that's what you're looking for, I'll have to just sit back and watch the results pour in!

Just in case, I sent in my questionnaire...

Can I get an idea of what crafts some spinners are after please? And is anyone shipping internationally (Australia) . I mainly sew if that helps. What (sewing or quilting) would be considered equivalent to a skein of handspun... ?  I have never used it but would LOVE to try it out :)

Post by: IdlersDesign on January 08, 2012 04:28:48 AM
I'll ship internationally, no problem.

As for the crafts, I think it doesn't really matter what technique you do. When you have a partner just talk to each other about what you like and what/how much you're both going to send. I think the idea is to have fun, so nothing to worry about  :D.

Unless someone steps up to co-organize, it looks like we  may end up closing sign ups early.

kwilty-There are spinners who are ok with shipping internationally. I know that many spinners are intrested in sewn items. Personally, I love sewn things but I'm not so handy with a sewing machine. lol As for what sewn items would equal a skein of yarn, that really depends on: the yardage, technique, and fiber used. I'm sure you could discuss it and clarify things with your partner. Please do join! We only have one more spot left for "Handcrafters".

I'm interested in trying this... I could be either, a spinner or a crafter. Though I only just recently learned plying and made a fairly fine 2-ply yarn. I just have to see how much time I have when it gets closer to closing date.

Tempted. But I have been out of the loop on here for, oh man, years I reckon.  That may make folks nervous.

I did one of the very first Handcrafts for Handspun swaps, the first maybe, not sure.  But it was amazing.  I was a crafter in that one and I have that skien still, that is how precious it was and still is to me.  I kind of want to give back, now that I am an experienced spinner myself.

Hmmm, let me know if you find you need another spinner to balance the numbers.

This is my first swap, so everyday I find myself excitedly checking the posts for new information. I am nervous and thrilled and terrified and inspired. I've been having all kinds of ideas for projects I might do, some beautiful and special thing I'll be able to create for my partner. I am chomping at the bit to get going. Yikes, this is scary! But in a good way. This is exactly the creative jolt I needed to kickstart this year. Thanks Zombie_Queen and everyone else for including me in this adventure...

Or I can close sign ups early if two spinners wish to take on an additional partner . I am willing to take on another partner and I know Jexx is also willing.  Let me know what you guys think :)

Personally, I'm fairly anti-closing sign-ups early since some people may be silently waiting toward the end of sign-ups to make sure they're available.

I am too. I spin on a drop spindle so the sooner I can start the better. I'm fairly quick for a drop spindler but I can't churn out 5 skeins of yarn in a day like a wheel spinner can X_x

I would side on early partners -  I have ideas swarming like rabid bees (that's right - rabid bees) in my brain waiting for a partner to coalesce into crafting genius

On partnering early, I don't care either way.  I'm wondering something though: I live within 10 miles of a buffalo ranch.  I talked to the owner about what he does with the fleece (they are primarily a meat operation), and he said he doesn't really do anything with it.  I asked him if I could have some of the fleece from the buffalo and he said I could come over to get some.
My question is this: would whoever is partnered with me be cool with getting some unprocessed buffalo fiber as part of the swap package I would send?  It seems logical to me to include this in with the crafted items I'll be sending.

I'm going to keep the swap opened through the weekend and close it on Monday if nothing has changed. jungrrl is right, there may be some people who are holding out until it's closer to end of sign ups. But, if we close Monday, that would still allow for earling partnering and extra crafting time. Sound ok?

Mmmmm.... buffalo fiber sounds dreamy!! I'd love some!

Well, I missed signing up as a crafter but I'm looking to join next round as a spinner.  I received roving from Zombie_Queen a couple of days ago and spun my first full skein!  It took a while and bits of fiber got everywhere, but I really enjoyed the process and it feel so nice to learn something new.

Yay, I'm in! Oh, I just realized I should add more stuff that I would like, to make match ups easier, so here are a few more ideas for my future partner. :)

(On my questionnaire I put I like scarves and anything with pandas.)

- Medium sized purse; I actually am way overdue on a replacement for my current purse.. I like damask fabrics, polka dots, blacks, grays, browns, creams. And panda fabrics, of course!
- Handmade soaps, vegan (no animal products, please). My favorite scents are coconut, vanilla, and cocoa.
- Camera bag for my diana f+ (hong meow edition!). Room for films (35mm) and lenses would be lovely.
- Photo album. I love film photography, standard 6"x4" prints. I also have a Fujifilm Instax, which has prints about the size of credit cards.
- As a spinner... batts and fibers! Hehe. Preferred fibers are merino (superwash or not) and cellulose fibers (bamboo, tencel, banana), blends welcome.

And these are just ideas... I'm pretty easy to please. ;)

I'm sorry, did you just say banana? There is banana yarn out there? I'm assuming it's spun from banana silk (that's a thing, right?)... but.. banana yarn?? I have got to look into this!
Um, can I add banana yarn to my list? :D

Yep! It's made from banana trees, not the bananas. Haha. :D I have yet to use it but I'm planning on it!! It's supposedly a bit less silky than bamboo.

I tried for a Phat Fiber box today but bah, seconds! Literally sold out in seconds!

I've spun banana fiber/silk when it wa blended into batts but I've never spun it straight. I'm going to have to look into it. I love trying new fibers and blends.

So, we're pretty closely matched between spinners and crafters. Looks like I will be closely sign ups tomorrow :) I'm out of town until Tuesday. I'll try to get partners out by Tuesday afternoon/evening.

I wish I would've known about that earlier.  I'm teaching myself to spin, but I can't find anywhere that seems pre-dyed fiber around here and the places I've found on etsy and whatnot are a bit out of my price range at the moment.

Yeah, oddly enough I'm not very into Ravelry ??? but I do follow the Phat Fiber Blog (http://phatfiber.blogspot.com/). I've been hearing about the boxes for some time but only recently, about 2 months ago, right after the November box selling, did I find out where to go to get one. Thank you Belladune! I wanted to try last month but didn't get to it so I made sure I was up by 9 yesterday (my kids are late sleepers, be jealous) to try to get one and HOLY CRAP! Gone in seconds, literally, seconds! I was lucky I got one in the afternoon run. I set the timer for 7 minutes before sale time while my G was playing Zelda (awesome!) and when I got one I was expecting to scream but I think I was in shock so when I finished paying I was walked back over and sat on the couch. He didn't even know I had gotten one until he asked and I shrieked out a YES! Then I had to explain it to him again. then randomly through the rest of the night I would blurt out "I got a box." Obviously this was my first box. He thought it was funny. I'm totally planning on taking pictures and posting in this thread when I get them, by the way. Yes, I have no life.

Tips for people who want boxes in the future:
-Sign up now for the email! You can't get in without an email. Well, I think you can technically but you can't get the COUPONS without. And the email has all the info about when and when.
-Follow the blog. There are like 3 or 4 full sized giveaways each week. I already won! I got 4 oz of some Alpaca/Angora blends that were super amazing to spin up.

Megancrafts: Why does it have to be pre-dyed? When I was learning I found Sheep Shed Studios (http://www.thesheepshedstudio.com/) to be quite a great source of roving. Cheap but good quality. And if you just get the white then you can learn to dye too. Hurray food coloring, Wilton's, Kool-aid and eater-egg dye kits!

I did find some roving at the LYS that I'm working with and plan to dye, but I've realized that I don't really have an interest in learning to dye at the moment.  Maybe once I actually try it, it'll click.  Thanks for the link!

I was just browsing their site and there seem to be new things since the last time I was there! Like, they have dyed roving for $15/pound. AMAZING! I mean, the colors are all solid but they are still dyed. That price is amazing! I just got a drum carder for Cmas so I am already making plans in my head for what I am to do with my craft budget next month. I'm thinking NYLON Woot!
Wow, typing a lot today guys. Sorry.

Wow, that is amazing.  I think I spent that much for undyed at the LYS and only got 4 oz.  And they didn't even have it labeled, so I'm not even sure what kind of wool it is.

Nylon is amazing! I bought like ten pounds of it from Sheep Shed Studios- it's bright white, so soft, and super easy to dye.  It seems to take color better than wool and turns out brighter.  It's hard to spin or card on it's own though, the fibers are so silkey and fine that they tend to fall apart- I blend mine with wool usually.

I signed up for the email, and i'm excited for next month. Not really expecting to get one, but it's just all so exciting!

I made my own drop spindle the other night (out of a pencil and cardboard, so... hahaha), and tried to spin while watching some youtube videos on my phone. Could not be bothered to go downstairs and get on the computer with a screen that might actually let me see something. Anyway, let's just say for now... i'm very happy there are real spinners out there.

I'm not sure about yardage, so I asked my partner if there was a specific item she wanted yarn for.  Luckily I'm using a wheel so a lot of yardage won't be a problem.

I'm not too sure about yardage. My partner wants bulkier yarn. I'm trying to decide whether I'll najavo ply or corespin it. That'll definitely affect the yardage.

I know there's a couple spinners who are using a drop spindle. I'll be spinning a wheel. Her name is Helena :) She is an Ashford Joy single treadle.

Wow, LISA I just noticed you're in this swap, haha! We had each other as partners last time, but I signed up as a crafter. :D I STILL Have the yarn you made for me stash, I can't decide what to do with it. I haven't been active on Craftster for a year or so now so I'm glad this swap just opened up right when I came back.

I know yardage will vary, I was thinking weight-wise how much fiber everyone will be using? I'm planning on doing 4oz + 2oz but not sure if that is enough or too much? I also will be dyeing the fibers myself. n_n

I can't believe you have my yarn still  ;D  I never know what to do with my own handspun either lol  Welcome back!  Good timing for the swap.

I was thinking of spinning approx 4oz and aiming for 300-400 yards so my partner can make a decent size item with the yarn

I'm excited to start crafting for this, but I have another swap to finish up first.  Hopefully I can start working on this one this weekend.  There are a ton of ideas floating around in my head, so I really need to sit down and plan.

Yup, I've been sharing words with my partner. I hope I didn't offend her  :o
Haven't done anything for it yet but we still have a month so I don't think it's a worry yet.
I did get my Phat box today, though, ooOOOoooooh!
And I have a Fiber Guild meeting tonight OOOoooOOOh!

How was everyone's weekend? Productive? I must admit, I didn't do any spinning this weekend. However, I did getting some knitting done on a cardigan and crocheted some granny squares. Weekends are never long enough!! Hope everyone had a great weekend.

I haven't started spinning yet, but can't wait! I'll have to finish a pair of socks for a swap on ravelry first (only 2 evenings of knitting) and then it's drop spindle time!  :D

I'm hopefully finishing up my Tiny Doctor Who Thing for my other swap while I'm home sick from work today, then I can hopefully start working on stuff for this swap.  I have a list of ideas together.

I dyed the 2oz of banana fiber, it should be ready to spin by tonight. :) I probably won't dye the 4oz alpaca until Friday or so, but I'll spin the banana until then. :)

Yea I wasn't very productive for this swap either....I dug out my fiber but then got carried away dying yarn for a super special project...but after that dying...I didn't feel like dying the roving.  :(  Oh well..maybe tomorrow night.

I've been sourcing crafts (that's all i can say about it) and brainstorming. I thought I'd have the weekend to craft, but I have to work on saturday. I'm hoping that in exchange I can get off work early on Friday, but .... you know how it goes. The best part is the crafting is something I'm confident with ... I just need the time for it.

I dyed the roving BUT when it finally dried, I went looking for "My" drop spindle and by "My" drop spindle I mean the one I had custom made for me by spinatude on esty. ARGH! I'm sure it's here somewhere but I might not find it anytime soon so I went ahead and ordered a new (not so custom) one from spinatude. It was shipped today so I should get it before the weekend. I'm sad that I have fallen behind! :(

I'm sure it's here somewhere but with my luck I'll either find it the day after I send out for this swap OR when I'm packing things up to move (which will hopefully be soon if all things go according to plan). It's ok though, it gave me an excuse to buy a new one lol

Apparently I haven't insulted my partner yet: win!
I don't know if this yarn I've been making will be for my partner yet or not. Maybe I will make something with the stuff I've been combing but first I have to comb some more. Go figure. Also gotta figure out how I want to dye it. Yikes!
Funny: got partners for the hoopla swap yesterday and I already know what I'm doing for both of those partners but this swap has been eluding me. I'll send on time I'm sure, but probably not very early.
ZQ, you make me look bad, but I should be used to that, right?

Jexx, I'm with you on the "difficulty" of this swap.  I've got some great ideas but some specific items are hard to find around where I live.  I might have to do some less-spectacular things (at least in my mind) for my partner, but I'll still do my best!

I've got stuff started. My hardest thing is sticking to what i need to get done. I have half of what i need done for another swap. I'm close to done with one thing for Shannin. But can i just go ahead and finish them? No. Haha. I'll for sure be done before sendouts, but probably not early at all.

By the way, Shannin, i cannot wait to see the colors you decided on. And to play with banana yarn! Eep!

OMG I still can't find my spindle! The hubby and I are moving the living room into the office and the office into the living room, which means going thru everything and I still haven't found it.
I ordered a new one, but it was defective so I'm getting a replacement which should be here in a couple of days BUT I am thoroughly annoyed that it seems like everything is getting in my way of working on this swap :/

EDIT: Ask and you shall receive! My replacement spindle came in 15 minutes after I posted this! I will FINALLY be able to get started! Yay! ;D

Just checking in: been in the hospital for the past week, so no spinning has been done. Hopefully out this week, but have a brand new baby waiting at home (january has been crazy) I've chatted with my partner about some of my "in stock" hand spun in case I don't have a chance to spin "fresh" yarn :D

Senders already, wow!

I was planning on picking up my drop spindle again this weekend to work on my partner's yarn, but there's a small change of plans... Look what my parents brought me today as a surprise!

OMG! ;D

It's antique and a smaller size wheel called a "duikertje" in Dutch. Guess I'll need this weekend to get the hang of it and then I hope to be able to make my partner's yarn on this beauty.

Exciting! Can't wait to see what you made  :D

The spinning wheel turned out to be a bit more difficult to use than I thought. First it was only twisting the thread, but the yarn didn't go on the bobbin. So I ended up with overtwisted yarn in my hand and nothing on the wheel. Now I think things are starting to work, but if someone has a tip or nows a useful place to check for spinning wheel trouble shooting (difficult to find, apparently spinning isn't the hippest activity nowadays, strange ey?  ;)) , I'd be very grateful.

I'm still here, still alive, still crafting! Little hectic with work, as always, and last weekend was eaten by an emergency birthday party crafting session. Ah, kids. If only there were munitions factories that needed your little arms.

If you find that factory, let me know if they have a foreman position open.  My two-year-old has decided in the past month that she is not happy simply bossing around her dolls and the dog, but she wants to wrangle everyone into shape. It sure makes difficult work of trying to sit quietly and turn my inspirations (very plentiful) into reality (still sad and pathetic).  I'm pushing through and LOVE naptime more than ever!

Why is it when I decide that my year is going to be one of completed projects and increased creativity that suddenly everything else gets in the way? Even the weather is fighting me!  I was hoping for horrible, depressing, force-you-inside-to-work-on-projects weather through the end of February.  I know I live in the South, but I thought at least until Valentine's.  No such luck. We've practically been on Spring Break since New Year's.  And when it's lovely out, I have to garden.

("Rocky" theme slowly builds in the background...)

Well, cauliflower and broccoli seeds, you'll have to wait!  Weeds be damned:  I'm on a mission this week!

My first swap and I feel like I'm back in college with a looming deadline and that great paper still in my mind. Well, I just have to finish...finish...finish.  I may have to slide it under the prof's door at the very last minute, but I'll send out something (hopefully genius) to my lovely (and patient) partner!

I think I can safely say now that I am 75% done spinning! Yesterday's dinner was mostly done in a crock pot so I literally spent all day yesterday spinning! I've got 100 yards on my Niddy Noddy and at least another ounce-ounce and a half to go on my spindle (it's thick & thin, mostly thin though). I think I should be done spinning and setting the twist by the weekend! ;D

What dye did you use and what was your method? Honestly if it's not coming out clear in a reasonable amount of time then it wasn't absorbed well enough (not enough heat setting, not enough vinegar, or too much dye).

Jacquard acid dyes, oven dyeing. There was definitely too much dye, haha. But I've let it soak, changing the water every now and then. I just rinsed it under the tap and it's clear now. :)

I have this swap, the hoop swap, and 2 claims in the pinterest swap that I want to have all out by the 20th. I'm thinking I'll just stack them up until until they are all done and send all 4 boxes at once. Can I do it? We'll see! I think I'm doing pretty good. Have about 2/3 done for this swap. Just need to figure out what I'm going to spin for the last skein and I'm good.  :D

I just need to finish plying, waiting for my wheel to do it on there! I'll be shipping on Thursday the 16th since that's the last time I'll be able to go to the post office before the 20th (which is a holiday!).

Finished something else today!

Shannin, I can't wait to see your wheel! Will you be naming it? Do you have any names picked out? I'm really into naming stuff, so I always have to ask. :D

I don't have any names in mind yet! Maybe it'll come to me once it's here haha.

My package from DesignVigilante is waiting for me at home.  I really shouldn't check tracking stuff while I'm at work, it makes the day drag like crazy.  So looking forward to going home now.   ;D

Oh noo I just packaged the yarns and realized I deleted the message with my partner's address. :( I'm leaving in an hour but I'll bring it along with me in case she messages it to me while I'm in class. Otherwise, I won't be able to mail until Tuesday. :(

So doing this swap has made me want to spin.  Where do you guys get your roving?  I went to check out micheals to see if they had anything just for starters and it was crazy expensive like three bucks for this itty bitty package!

I just finished my second small and I think I'm going to make one for myself.  Taking pictures and getting everything packed up tonight or tomorrow.  I hope my partner likes everything!

I also get my roving from etsy.com but if you want something more specific, this is my favorite shop for solid colored or bare roving. Their prices are some of the lowest and they always have free shipping. http://www.etsy.com/shop/WCMercantile

Try www.thesheepshedstudio.com.  You can get mill ends for very very cheap, and higher quality stuff for very decent prices, especially if you order in bulk. It's good for learning to spin or dye, since if it doesn't turn out that great you haven't lost a ton of money.
