Title: Paper Crane Memorial of Love for Simon
Post by: Miss Whitney on December 15, 2011 12:55:28 AM
"What's with the cranes?", you may ask.

My best friend and boyfriend of over 6 years, Simon, was rushed to the hospital with chest pains on October 2, 2011. He had had an unexpected cardiac event stemming from a genetic bone disease he shares with his family. The emergency open-heart surgery was successful, but as myself and his family became aware that he may never wake from a coma, we asked friends and family to support us by folding cranes; An old Japanese legend says that if 1,000 cranes are folded, the gods will grant you a wish. You can guess what we were hoping for. We had over 1,000 cranes, but we were not granted our wish. My beloved Simon died on October 14, 2011. He was 34.

Although people continue to fold cranes, the bulk of them were entrusted to me. Fighting my urge (fueled by rage and despair) to burn them to ashes, I worked with my mom to find a safe, respectful, and beautiful way to honor Simon and the support everyone gave us during those terrible weeks. We restrung every crane, after hunting for weeks for the appropriate materials to make what we were envisioning a reality.

Each crane was selected for its specific string - some strings are themed and some are random. Each crane is separated by a bead, and each string has a weight at the bottom. The light in the middle is a strand of LED x-mas lights doubled over itself a few times and wired together. The case is 5 feet tall by about 1.5 feet wide and deep. There are 598 paper cranes in the case, and one ceramic one (a gift to me from Simon's sister).

Several strands of cranes were sent to Simon's parents for a memorial they held, and I took 10 with me to work, each stuck over an LED x-mas light which now hangs in my cubicle. Unless someone comes up with something else to do with the remaining cranes, they will be ceremoniously burned at a beach fire this summer.

Thank you for reading. I hope you think it's as beautiful as I do.

The crane memorial is truly beautiful. Even without knowing it's story, I would have thought it beautiful, but it takes on a truly special meaning because of the love and loss that was involved. I am so sorry for your loss.

I can only echo what everyone else has already said in this thread, this is both a beautiful piece of art and craftsmanship aswell as a beautiful way to remember someone who was obviously held dearly in the hearts of many people. I work in an intensive care unit and so I see people on a day to day basis who are praying for their loved ones, in fact I often get to know relatives and friends better than the patients themselves, during my short 2year career I have seen people cope in a variety of ways but this is truely original and inspirational. I wish you well and I'm really sorry for your loss.

It is indeed beautiful...so glad that you made something creative that will help you with your grief...I am sorry you lost your special person... so many people were thinking of Simon by making cranes...a lovely tribute

I think your idea of burning the remaining cranes is also a good one...I hope it, too, will help you heal and find peace...

Thanks for sharing such a personal story and your lovely cranes

What a beautiful memorial. Maybe you could print off stickers that say "In memory of Simon...", stick them on the crane and place them for others to find and enjoy. Maybe start a blog, add the web address to the sticker and let people tell you that they found a crane.

I'm so sorry for your loss.  I remember reading the story in school Sadako and the thousand paper cranes.  I even remember learning how to fold them.  While I've forgotten over time how to fold them, I never forgot what 1000 paper cranes meant.  I am so sorry for your loss, and I wish your wish had been met.  What you did with the cranes is a very beautiful and loving tribute to your Simon.

What a beautiful job you did here. I feel for you in your loss, that is never easy. :'(
The best part though is that, either by just these gorgeous cranes, or believing in what you do- I hope you know he is always with you.
Take care. :3

How beautiful. My school did this for a teacher that had cancer, but we were also not granted our wish. We had well over 100 and many beautiful memorials were made with the cranes. I am very sorry for your loss.

I haven't been on craftster in quite some time, but for this to be one of the first projects I see when I return- WOW. it is stunning, and beautiful and all of the many things that others before me have said. If burning the remaining cranes brings you closure, then you should act on it by all means. I would like to point out how many people have come together to compliment you and express their sorrow for your loss, and to me it brings out some sort of karmic force, that so many of us commiserate with you... I guess what I'm trying to say in not quite as many words is that I think it would be lovely if you took the remaining cranes and gave them to others who are in/ have family in an intensive care unit, to share your wish with them that their loved ones get better. Take every bit of love you put into making each crane and continue to celebrate your Simon by passing along your tribute to others.

I'm sorry for your loss.

There are strands of 1,000 cranes like this hanging in the peace park in Nagasaki, Japan as a memorial for those who died in the atomic bomb, so your tribute to Simon is very much in the spirit of the tradition.

Very beautiful and touching.

That is both heart breaking and beautiful. I must give my respect to anyone level headed enough to keep calm and not react with rage and burn them all, I know I would have done something similar to burning them in my rage. This was a much better idea for them I think :)
