Are your kids feeling crafty? Do your kids like to 'borrow' items from your swap packages? Here's a swap for them. Lets get our kids to craft for each other and receive their own packages!

Swap name: By Kids For Kids Holiday Swap
Craftster member who is organizing this swap: Crafty Butterfly (please remember the space between the two words when messaging me. messages sent without the space won't get to me)
Sign-up date range: 10/3-10/21
Date to send item by: 12/3 (international swappers please check postage times and send early if possible to make sure item arrives before December 24th)
Limited to a certain number of people? (optional): No- I will recruit a co-org if needed. Any volunteers?
Restricted to people who all live in the same country? NO

Additional Age requirement? Participating children should be between 3 and 15 years old. If there are younger siblings (1-2 years) that would like to join in and are capable of doodling/coloring please list them and we'll see if we can match them up as well.

Swap Organizer himself/herself meets these conditions:
- Has fully read the Swap Info Guide: YES
- Has successfully completed two swaps as a participant: YES
- Is not organizing more than three swaps right now: YES
- Will recruit a co-organizer or give all details to a Swap Moderator if this swap has more than 25 participants: YES
- Is at least 18 years old: YES

Swap Organizer will check each participant to make sure they meet these conditions:
- Has been a member for at least one month: YES/NO
- Has posted at least 15 times: YES/NO

Details of swap:
Each child will be making one small gift and if at all possible one ornament and one card as well. If the holiday rush attacks you suddenly then it is okay to purchase an ornament and card instead of making them. The small gift should take no more than 2 hours to craft and cost no more than $10 in materials. Here are some ideas: T-shirt, bag, picture frame, hand puppet, box, puzzle, piggy bank, jewelry set, etc. I will try to match kids up as close in age and gender as I can. The idea is to keep this a fairly small swap that would be easy to fit in around school and other activities. If you want to send extras please consult with your partner.

Communication request: It would be nice to keep the messages/chat on this thread goign so that we know everyone is still around. Please keep in touch with your partner via PM or on the message board every week or two once sign ups close. One week before send outs I will send everyone (unless you've sent already) a PM to check in on progress and make sure everyone is still alive and crafting. :)

Will talk to munchkins after school today.

Do we send in one questionaire per child or have each child fill out the questionaire part and send them all together in one email?

Thanks.

I texted my husband at work to see if he's okay with it, and then when el kiddo (my stepdaughter) is home I'll see if she's interested! I'm sure she will be--she LOVES crafting and she'd probably get a huge kick out of the whole swap process.
Might be sending in a questionnaire later today!

The more the merrier! I'm eagerly awaiting more questionnaires.   Those already listed should now have feedback listed as in progress. If I've missed or misspelled something please feel free to let me know either here or in a PM. I'm only human and I do make mistakes. I'd much rather correct them now then after signups have closed.

I'm going to wait until closer to the end of sign ups, just because I know the Duck will be all gung-ho to get started then his excitement will dwindle the longer we have to wait.  And for him, 2 weeks is a long time :)

DH said it was fine, so when I picked her up from school I told her about Craftster swaps and told her about how there's one for kids coming up... I asked her if she thought that'd be fun and if she wanted to do it and she said, "YES! That sounds like fun!"

So questionnaire sent! As soon as we hit "send" she said, "I can't wait to find out who my partner is because I can't wait to start crafting!"

I wanted to add, too, that she LOVES learning to do new crafts, so Crafty Butterfly, when you're partnering her with someone, don't worry about trying to find her a partner that wants something she already knows how to make; she's always up for learning something else and she just wants to make whatever her partner wants! She also said that she would love anything she gets :) She's VERY excited for this!

I did get your questionaire. I'll get you added in the morning along with any other i get between now and then.

It seems that most(possibly all I've only really skimmed over the qnaires to make sure the essential info is there) of the kids so far have listed a couple of things they would like but also said that they would enjoy anything that their partner wants to make for them.

Okay, we have sent in our questionaire. The girls are really excited about this swap. I think until we get partners, to help them witht he long wait, we will brainstorm idea for ornaments. That way they will already have an idea.

My girls are a bit limited on the crafts they know how to do, but they are always eager to try new things and will LOVE anything that is made for them. ^-^

Can't wait for this swap to get started.  Thanks for hosting!!

Sounds like Thomas too! He's got such an imagination. Not everything that he imagines is possible to achieve. Like getting a digger to fly our house from OH, USA to West Sussex, England so he could live next to his grandmum. It's very sweet but highly unlikely to work that way.

Orgoanisers note: For those of you who have done swaps before You're familiar with keeping in touch on messages boards or via PM. I neglected to type up the level of communication that I would like to see during the swap. I've added it to the initial post. I request that once partners are given that you keep in touch with them either via PM or by posting in this thread roughly once a week or two. (I won't really be keeping track but it would be nice to see)   The only communication that I will require is a response to a check in message that I will send one week before send outs to make sure that you're still around and planning to send.

Haha my girls have been asking this also. I wrote it on the calendar and now when they ask I just point them over there. Its good practice for them to look up dates on the calendar and read the written appts.  ;)

They're super excited though.

If the kids are eager to get started why not let them make cards and ornaments. If they make more than one card you could always save them to give to a teacher or relative, ditto for the ornaments. It would be a good way to test out ideas and work through them. The only downside is it's a bit early to start thinking about christmas.

Thats not a bad idea, but I thought our ornaments were supposed to be based on the partners preferences....am I wrong?

You're not wrong. The original post is unclear. I was just going with what had been discussed in the new swap idea theme thread for this swap. I guess it's open to interpretation at the moment. I had thought the the ornaments could just be an ornament for the christmas tree.

Another thought could you make an ornament and then when you have partner's info add to it an image of a favorite character or thing or add their name to it?

What does everyone else think?

Lets discuss this and reach a consensus then I will clarify the original post.

I know we are wrapped up in crafting for our Halloween party decor right now, so we won't be starting on ornaments until later on after we find out partners. I had figured that the boys could decide when they get their partners info what kind of ornament we were going to work on.

If the Duck and I join(which in all likelyhood is we will), we'll be working on the ornament, not just buying one.  And we'll likely make it to suit our partner.  But, if others have the time to work on a bunch of ornaments, then choose one that best suits their partner , I don't see a problem with it :)  And am I right in saying the ornament doesn't have to be made, but can be bought, along with the card?

I think that buying the card and ornament if time runs short is something that was mentioned in the sew swap idea thread. It looks like what i typed out in the initial sign-up post was that all 3 will be made. Will this be a problem? I can change it if necessary.

we're planning on making all 3 parts of ours as well. i don't think my girls would care if an ornament was bought, especially if it were purchased with them in mind. store bought ornaments can get expensive too!

The decision seems unanimous then. I've modified the original post to state that the small item is required and that it's preferable but not required for the card and ornament to be made.

I do have a couple of questionaires that I haven't had time to add to feed back and onto the original post. I have a very busy weekend and want to make sure that i don't miss anything. I'll try to find the time this evening or tomorrow to get it done but it might be Monday morning.

Keep the questionaires coming. The more the merrier!

I'm pretty sure we'll be making the ornament, I've been making ornaments for a Harry Potter tree for a personal swap, and we've had so much fun thinking up ideas and figuring out how to make them work.  Chloe keeps asking when she'll know her partner, too!

Everyone that I have questionaires for should now have feedback and be listed in the initial post here. (i still need to add kids names for the newest 4 swappers and will do so in the next few minutes)      If I've missed anyone let me know!    Keep the questionaires coming, Sign-ups close friday evening. If we get more than 5 more swappers between now and then I'll need a co-org. Any volunteers?

Duck really wanted to do this again, so we sent in our questionaire. He has an idea that is completely adaptable to whomever we get, so that's good.  He also expressed the desire for a girl partner, so if there is a girl who is 6-7 ish who wouldn't mind a boy partner, let us know.  We are in Canada though, just incase that makes a difference to you.

I'll keep that request in mind. :)

It seems like we have a lot of swappers from the states and a couple from canada. There are enough willing to ship international so it seems things will work out fine.

I will definitly get the list of partners up before I go to bed and I will hopefully have all the questionaires sent as well. Matching partners up is being trickier than i thought. I'm not sure how much of an age gap would be acceptable. for the 7 & up kids would it be a problem matching them to someone 4-5 years older? does their crafting ability change much between those ages? I only have experience with 5 and under.

4-5 with 7-8 might be ok, but 9 and up is probably best matched up together.

I'd have to say it depends on the child, but I don't think i'd match a 4 year old with a 7 year old, it's quite a gap in dexterity and abillity.  I'd go with age groups of 4-6, 7-9, 10-13, and 14+  But that might be what you were planning, and it's not working out.

I'll keep the suggestions about age groups in mind. There's a lot of other factors too. the 5 and under's match up pretty well it's all the 7 & up that i'm trying to figure out. I'm getting there though. it's looking like I'll only get a tentative partner list up tonight and questionaires will get sent out tomorrow.

i think 7-10 is probably okay, but over that and the upper aged child might not be happy with the quality of work the younger child is able to produce.

I've done a bit of tweaking. I think that for all but one of the 2-3 children household I've been able to pair you up so that as few packages will have to be mailed as possible. There are a couple of partners where I have sent a message to the Craftster parent with a question. I will post the tentative line up for partners in the initial post. Please keep in m;ind that it is tentative. Once I have heard from the swappers that I had questions for I will finalize the partners and send out questionaires.

Thank you for waiting patiently for partners and questionaires.

Questionaires have now been sent to all but 3 swappers who will  be receiving theirs shortly. Partners are finalized. If anyone is missing a questionaire or has any queries please message me or leave a note and I'll sort it out as soon as I can.

Happy Swapping!

My youngest was already talking about a pink scooby doo ornament and I had to remind her that her partner is a boy and likes blue not pink. lol We will be brainstorming this weekend and hopefully finalizing an idea by next week. :D

Thanks for organizing this. The girls are very excited!!

Are we waiting until christmas before openning our packages?

I'm going to print out the questionnaire for Hailey and she'll get to see it and check out who her partner/s are when she gets home. She's spent the weekend with her biomom, and will be spending the night with her grandma (my MIL), but she'll be back after school tomorrow and we'll probably get started! Or I'll give her a day or two to brainstorm and we'll get started later in the week.

Holy cow, I can't believe someone is finished already. The girls really want to get started on their swap stuff, but I have midterms this week and then there's halloween. We won't be able to do anything until mid next week. Also, like Crafty Butterfly, we've been trying to enjoy whats left of the sun before we are stuck inside for winter.

However, that's not to say they haven't been productive. The girls have drawn up at least 10 different ideas for ornaments/little gifts. They are really getting into this brain storming thing. :)

So the girls decided that their "small" gifts would be a my size pokemon and scooby doo, until I asked them how they planned on crafting that. The answers I got were as follows:
"well you can make it mom."
me: "this is YOUR swap, so you have to make it."
"okay. We can glue it together."

Btw the girls only have glue sticks....so I think its safe to say they wont be gluing these my size critters together. lol. We apparently have a long ways to go before deciding on a realistic project. But they are having a great time coming up with all the creative ideas.  ;)

Our plan for starting on our two days off got side tracked due to unforeseen circumstances. The boys are even more in the mood to make holiday things though now as all the big toy and holiday magazines have found their way to our mail box. ^_^

Hoping to get a craft store run in this weekend - although that may do more harm than good.  I'm sure she'll see a bazillion 'awesome' things and change her mind about what she's making as we turn every aisle!

Helping B fix up any loose bits on the gift, he feels it needs a bit more decoration though.

Got our gift 85% done, and our ornament 50% done today.  Wil finish off the gift tomorrow, and who knows when the first part of the decoration will be dry, but we are getting there.

part one of craft done. part two fabric chosen, and the ornament decided on, we just seem to be short a few ___ of the right size...

We are at a creative standstill, but will push through after Thanksgiving.  Otherwise our partner's card & goodies would all be decorated with Turkeys and Pilgrims.  ;)

Goldfish, I totally get that. Hailey's having trouble because it's just too early for her to think about Christmas! So after Thanksgiving we'll get on it and push through.

We have the ornament nearly done. Thomas really loves looking at the christmas decorations at the stores. I'd really rather not think about it much till after Thanksgiving though.   I see us crafting up a storm on Friday!

I had to tell duck the same thing, onceinlovewithamy.  I think I even worded it " If we don't do it now, then we'll be flakers and Cassidy will be very disapointed in you." It lit a fire under his butt and he got it done.  took all of 20 minutes, but I suppose for a 6 year old (in my case) 20 minutes  is a long time. Sometimes they just need a reminder.

I've sent messages out to everyone who hasn't already sent. Please respond to the message so that I know everyone is alive, crafting, and planning to send.

Thanks!

It figures! They were so gung-ho in the beginning, but I kept putting them off because I had to do this or that. Now it's harder to get them back there. They were so excited about it, I should have taken a couple of hours to let them do it then!  ::)

We're almost done though. If we can finish up tomorrow I will schedule a pick up for Friday!

Maddock has received but I don't know if we should wait to open until Christmas, or open a bit at a time or what... I think we may do the card, then the ornament with the present not being opened until  Christmas morning. How are you guys doing it? I can actually take pictures and then wrap them before he sees them today ^_^ (Everything is amazing by the way!) Scratch that, we opened and they are having a ball with one of the items ^_^ I'll post pictures in the gallery as soon as I can get them off the camera!
