Title: Mug Rug Swap r2 (SU Closed, Send out 10/17/11)
Post by: canamharris on September 06, 2011 07:17:27 AM
Is a coaster just to small for your drink but a placemat is just to big? Then you NEED a mug rug!

In this swap we’ll be crafting one mug rug for our partners.

- Mug rugs can vary in size and shape but should be roughly around 5” x 8”.
- Any techniques can be used…patchwork, embroidered, knit, etc. but keep in mind that the rug should be able to absorb a bit of moisture and protect surfaces from warm drinks.
- Please only send one completed mug rug. No extras.
- We will not be doing 2 partners this round (hopefully next time).
- Posting to the discussion thread or PM’ing organizers is required at least every 2 weeks.
- Have fun!!

What a great idea, wish I were able to join. Because of a recent move, school starting and not having a job my swaping funds are null in void. I'll be keeping my eye on this board for some great ideas.

Using the backing to bind is super easy! (That's how my Grandma taught me to do it)
Last round I used these tutorials to bind mine:

http://contented.typepad.co.uk/contented/2010/10/mug-rug-tutorial-part-two-binding.html
http://verykerryberry.blogspot.com/2010/07/mitred-corners-binding-tutorial.html

It wasn't to hard and I don't think I used a binding foot (I don't know if I have one actually)

Me Too! But I think I'm going to make one anyway, I need the practice and I'm going to try the easy peasy binding technique. I went and bought some beautiful purple fabric last night to make a sample one for me. I'm going to make some coasters to match it as well.

Yes your rug can be non quilted. It could be felted, knitted, crocheted. (And possibly some other form that I haven't listed....woven maybe?)
If you have questions or concerns, feel free to shoot me a PM! We would love to have you join!

I also found 2 more tutorials for the quilters. I'm adding them to the list on the front page. If you run across something helpful or awesome feel free to share it so I can add it to the list!!

I've been debating about signing up for this.  I've never made a mug rug before, but I have fabric that I want to use to make myself one.  Maybe I'll give that a try after I finish up homework tonight, see how it turns out, and make a decision from there.  I'm starting to really love single item swaps.  So much less stressful.

Dooooo ittttttt!!  My very first mug rug turned out slightly wonky, but I still really liked it (I thought the wonky-ness actually added to it)!  And I had never quilted before or anything.  They're a great little craft that doesn't take too much time to complete!

I think I might try the backing-as-binding method for this swap.  It looks so easy-peasy!  And still pretty.  :)

I agree with badpuppy - do it!!

I went and bought a slew of fat quarters yesterday for another project I am working on.  Some of them aren't going to be used for my current project - I just had to buy them because they were so awesome.  We'll see what my partner likes, maybe I can work them in :D :D :D!

My name is Cynthia, and I think I'm a fabricaholic...

Organizer note

Signups will be open until Saturday afternoon (roughly around 1pm MST. Cause thats when Nap time is here!) I'll then try to get partners up shortly after!

I know there has been a couple questions about the swap rules regarding No Extras.  I know lots of us like to spoil our partners a little with extras. However to keep this swap fair and easy we have decided to not do extras. We can send something like a couple bags of tea but preferably nothing else. This also helps with swap anxiety feelings! We just want everyone to have a fun enjoyable stress free swap!

If you really want to send more to your partner you can always arrange to do a personal swap on the side.

If you have any questions about this or any other part of the swap please let me know!!

I hope everyone has a wonderful time with this swap! I know I'm really looking forward to it!! Has anyone made any practice rugs that they want to share? Or has anyone found any really cool places for inspiration? (other then my pinterest hehehe ;) )

My name is Cynthia, and I think I'm a fabricaholic...

My boyfriend has diagnosed me with F.A.C.  Fabric Acquisition Disorder.  It's a serious illness plaguing crafters throughout the world.

And I promise not to go crazy with extras. I may include a couple tea flavours, but that would be it! (And to my future partner, if you don't have a well-stocked tea cupboard like me, there is no need to reciprocate!).

I am no off to check out canamharris's pinterest...  :)

So whoever I get paired up with, don't worry if you don't hear from me over the weekend. I'll check in asap.

All this talk of fabric stores is making me SOOOOOOOOOO jealous! We recently moved to a small town so the closest big/awesome fabric store is now 1.5 hours away!!! I miss having on 20 minutes down the road. I really really miss it! At least I'm able to get most of the notions and necessities that I need in town, most of the time!

Is everyone excited for partners?!?! I have alot of the preliminary parterning done so hopefully I should be able to get partners out tomorrow shortly after closing the signups!

If your holding off on joining, don't wait any longer!! Come join us!!

Today's nap time (I.e. spend time on the computer when I should be crafting....) has been spent on mug ruggery! I went looking for new inspiration after spending time on figuring out some of your lovely partners!

So I decided I would share some of what I found! I found that searching for coasters and placemats can find you some cool ideas that can be adapted for mug rug size!

Some of these things I pinned and some I just wanted to share (cause I love them but not enough to pin them)
(http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/3290340735/)
Owl Coasters2 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/3290340735/) by SadBlueDog (http://www.flickr.com/people/[email protected]/), on Flickr
Its a knitted owl coaster! (which could totally be a mug rug!)

(Look at that rick rack edging! This one if on my pinterest!)

I love the piping edging!

I think these would look awesome in mug rug size! (especially for a tea pot)

Mug Rug (http://www.flickr.com/photos/made_in_monty/5738532160/) by Made_in_Monty (http://www.flickr.com/people/made_in_monty/), on Flickr
I love the doily on this one and the crocheted edging.

Oh and there is even a mug rug group on flickr! http://www.flickr.com/groups/mugrugmadness/

I hope this inspires everyone!! Please feel free to share what your coming across out there too!!!

PARTNERS POSTED! I'm now trying to send out the questionairre's to partners! *edit: Everyone should have their partner's questionnaire in their inbox! (Please let me know if there is an issue or if you didn't receive it!!)

Hooray for partners! I'm so happy and here's why. I got paired with LillaTusen, who lives in Sweden! I've never done an international swap before...I've always said I'd be willing to be paired up that way, but I guess the opportunity just didn't present itself before now.

OK...so now that we've established I've never done an overseas swap before now...does anyone have any pointers for me? What can I send/what can't I send? Weight limit on the box or not? Am I able to send teas, etc.?

I'm really excited to start! I've already got my idea and fabric choices for dfabbric =)

I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions about stitching on an irregular shape applique. Kinda like this:
I've done it a couple of times by hand and I think I'm getting fairly good at it, but I wondered if there is maybe a neater/more effective way of doing it. Thanks!

I've done it a couple of times by hand and I think I'm getting fairly good at it, but I wondered if there is maybe a neater/more effective way of doing it. Thanks!

I always just use a little heat and bond lite and then either hand stitch over it or use my machine. I also will sometimes use a little fray check on the edges. I found this tutorial once and have been meaning to try it. I don't know how well it will work (depending on the shape and all)

Excited to go fabric shopping tomorrow and start on the rug!  I have some good ideas - I was thinking about trying some applique as well!

I'm all about felt applique.  No fraying to worry about.  (Yes, I know it's the lazy way.)

Starting to draw my mug rug today, just to get an overview. Think it will be great! :D
And after that I need to do some fabric-shopping me too. ^^

I think my shape will be a little too irregular to try out that tutorial, but looks like an awesome idea!
I will, however, get some heat and bond =) Thanks!

Nah, it's not lazy, it's a totally different style ;)

I saw one version of this method where they did a bird shape using it. I was surprised at how well it looked like it worked. Though I didn't like how puffy it made the applique look. I keep meaning to try this method though. Maybe one day I will. In the meantime I just keep saving those used dryer sheets. (I also found in my google search something about using them as stabalizer? what?)

You shouldn't have weight issues on this one: the USPS has a variety of sizes of Priority Mail International Flat Rate Envelopes for $13.95 (up to 4 pounds) with a 6-10 day delivery time.  http://ircalc.usps.gov/MailServices.aspx?country=10411&m=2&p=0&o=15&c=4  Don't get scared by the products and prices when the page first opens -- these are not the droids you want!  At the bottom of that chart click on "Priority Mail International Options" for a chart with the Flat Rate Envelope information.  To get this rate you have to use USPS printed envelopes, which you can obtain at your post office.

You'll need to fill out a customs form, also available at the PO, on the day you send.  This is a two part slip, green on the left, white on the right; the green gets attached to your package, which the mail clerk can do for you.  On the green part, check the little box for Gift, write "Handmade Gift" in the Quantity and Detailed Description of Contents area, and for value write "NCV" (No Commercial Value; this way the PO in Sweden will know they don't need to collect import duty).  Also, the mail clerk will ask you questions about potential hazards like liquids, explosives, things that can leak, etc.  Obviously we know these don't apply, but they're required to ask.

A couple of tea bags should be fine, just layer them with the mug rug as you wrap it.

Congratulations on your first international swappage!

Sending early is AWESOME! So once you finish just go ahead and send. The latest we want people to send is the 17th. Though of course there are times when thats just not possible. In those situations just contact your organizer and partner to let us know.

But sending early gives you special props in your feedback! (and if I was giving out gold stars, that would earn you one!)  ;D

Oh and for the overseas sending question. Since we are sending such small packages you can probably fit it into a 6 by 9 manila envelope. Sometimes shipping on that is cheaper then the flat rate USPS packages.

You really have given me such creative freedom, Somehow. I'm still enjoying the churning phase which leads to the what-if phase, which heads right into the but-why-not-try phase which...at some point, don't worry, I do cut and sew :D

I hope to start MY partner's mug rug by the weekend - already have fabrics that will match her faves!   ;)

Funny thing is my mug rug partner is in the mystery critter swap too.  :o (I need to confess, "shocked" IS my favorite emoticon) Then we all got partners the same day and the two of you both have gnomes in your avatars....I needed to recite "Coddleston Pie" quite a bit that day, for I was a " Blair of very little brain".

I have heard from my partner and am going to really get this ball rolling while children nap for a very, very long time! (One can wish, right?)

It is gong to look so cool. I just have to figure out if I want a "floppy" or a more "stiffer" mug rug. Maybe I make both and decide.  ;D

No, but they have bandanas and stuff like that.  One of them actually has felt, which I thought was kind of awesome even though it was really cheap.

oh...ok. still pretty cool! I like going to the thrift store sometimes to find fabric! I always find cool sheets/duvet covers that give you TONS of fabric for the price! (I spent $5 on a queen size duvet cover that is an awesome yellow fabric!) I also can find lots of cool stuff in the clothes (the bigger the size, the better the price!). I don't have a fabric store near me so sometimes I have to get creative!

I'm excited to get started too!  I just know that the perfect fabric is somewhere in my stash - the trick is going to be finding it.

I feel for the Craftsters who don't have a nearby fabric store.  My grandmother lives in a rural area and now that the Walmart stopped carrying fabric, she sells from her own stash to other quilters around her.

Um, I have my pattern drawn out and fabrics chosen. I have to stop by the fabric store to pick up something because everything I have in that color is just not the right shade.  ::) Other than that, I'm using stash- yay! I'll be camping all weekend, so I'll probably actually start sewing next week.

Got my fabrics and am pretty settled on a design.  Have a due-sooner-swap to work on, but should be starting to mug rug next week.

However, I have a question for our experienced quilters, but asking it will tip off my partner to at least part of the design, and we can't have that, now can we?  So I'm going to post again immediately after this one, with an admonition in big letters warning astamour not to read it.  Any responses should come to me through PM, please.

ASTAMOUR, DO NOT READ THIS POST!

OK, so my question is this: what would you suggest as the best way to make a diagonal striped block?  I've researched online but so far have only found references to paper piecing, nothing with layout/measuring/cutting information for a single block -- or partial block, as this will probably be.  Any ideas or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.  And again, please reply to me by PM to help maintain the surprise for Bakeneko.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

My rug is coming along pretty well, after a false start that caused me to have to start over again (why does that always  happen to me?). Only one little problem, I like Southern Flower's colors so much I'm not going to want to give it away! So now I need to make another for myself to keep.  ;D

Does anyone else have that problem, you like your swap item so much you don't want to give it away?

Happens to me all the time  :D - most of the time, I have enough extra materials to duplicate what I made to keep one - I really haven't gotten down to making ME one yet for any of the swaps I've participated in - never too late to start though!  :)

I am totally inspired by this ladies work.
http://flossieblossoms.blogspot.com/2011/08/finished-doll-quilt-dqs-11-and-some.html
It is way beyond my skill level.  She talks about doing “bittys”. How do you crafters think this is done?  Shrunk pattern with ¼ seams?

It looks to me to be paper pieced - which can be pretty small.  I have a book of paper pieced "mini quilts."  Teeny tiny pieces.  :)

Bakeneko -
I looked at that link you shared...whoa!  I have made some small patchwork squares by hand that I thought were cute.  But her stuff is AMAZING.  It is defenitely inspiring!

Hi all!  Sorry I haven't checked in recently... I'd sent my partner a PM but didn't realize I hadn't checked in here in a while (I'm still learning Craftster; oops!).  I've been working primarily on finishing up another swap (13 mini days of Halloween), and am putting the final touches for that one together today and will be able to focus on my mug rug tomorrow!  I did a practice round and really liked the main body of the rug, but had some problems finishing it using bias tape.  I keep thinking my sewing skills are better than they are...  :-\  But everything I try is helping me learn... At least, that's what I keep telling myself.

So, I wish my trial run had turned out neater, but frankly I still liked the way it wound up looking and may use a similar fabric layout for this one.  I went and bought fabrics last week and was waiting for confirmation on the color of brown that Bergman likes, which I have now - deep, dark chocolate brown - yum!  It's a happy circumstance that I noticed one of the fabrics on one of her pinterest items is almost *exactly* like one I bought (maybe that one imprinted on me before I went shopping and I forgot!).   Really excited to put it together!

Woot! Last night, I finally had some time to myself and my machine and I'm now almost done my mug rug! (Everything except the applique is ready)

I can't believe how much FUN this is! It starts out all messy and full of thread sticking out of every corner and then... stitch stitch stitch and it looks neat and professional =P

No one warned me this would be addicting! hehe ;D

Gah... I've made two rugs so far, the first with the bias tape binding and the second had the wrap-around easy binding style... I had problems with both.  In both cases I had difficulty keeping it even, so that my machine line stayed looking straight from either side.  It is pretty enough at first glance but then when you look closely (as a fellow crafter would) you notice the wildly uneven widths of fabric (on the wrap-around binding) and drastically uneven lines (from the "wrong" side of wherever I was sewing).  I may have to finish out Bergman's mug rug by hand in order to get some semblance of the quality I'd like to send...  Any advice, fellow crafters?

I have found the only way I can be completely happy with my binding is to machine sew the front and hand sew the back. It doesn't take too much longer and I alleviate the frustrations of wonky lines.

Today I will go to storage and dig out my scrap bins. ( side note: really?!? What was I thinking i could go 6-8 months without my stash... ) I have my pattern all planned out and need tofind my fusible...

Ditto, sloth003.  I like the break from machine stitching anyway - something about hand sewing the binding to the back is just, therapeutic.  Soothing too.  Probably weird, but true for me.  :)

Nearly everytime I participate in a swap I try a new technique. This time there are two things I've never done before.

I'm finishing the deco on the mug cozy canamharris and I agreed to send with the rug.

I have to admit that the rug was one of my favourite pieces in my 15 years of knitting history.

My rug is pieced, now on to the quilting. I've decided I'm not good at stitch in the ditch, so will be doing something else. Hopefully can finish that part up tonight, then on to the binding!

Thank you so much for the tip - This sounds like something I can totally try, and a lot less work than hand stitching BOTH sides.  We'll go for round three this Sunday (tomorrow I teach Junior Master Gardeners, Thursday is a local technology council gala, Friday the VT football game crowd begins to arrive...!).  I still love the ones I made so far, just too embarrassed to send to my Mug Rug partner since they are sort of a mess around the edges.  Crossing my fingers for third time's the charm!

I ordered a bunch of different fabrics online... For whatever reason the *one* fabric store within a 30 mile radius didn't seem to have many good choices.  So, once I get those in I'll get to crafting, hopefully they get here before Sunday!  I'll be out of town 10/14-10/28 so will definitely be sending earlier than the required send by date, and since Bergman is already done, hopefully I'll be receiving before I head out of town so that I can receive and post up pics!  :D

It never takes that long.  They have to say that because some areas of Canada are almost as far away as austraila and twice as remote.  :D

Now Canada to the us... Some times it does take two weeks.

It only takes 2 weeks to get to Canada if Canada customs decides to hold on to it for no apparent reason, which seems to happen to me on occasion.  Grr.

My trip to the fabric store was MUCH more costly than anticipated.  Which is pretty much true of any trip to the fabric store.  But all the quilting cottons were half price... what's a girl to do??

Got a whole paper-pieced block done! First time using this technique and the results are awesome! I even found the perfect fabric in my stash :D
Now to decide on the back, hmmmmm.....

Was stuck on what to do for the reverse side -- just make a simple back side? try to make it fully reversible? -- but yesterday had an idea I think might work; I'm going to have to play with the stitching for a while, though, to make sure it works for both.

Hey crafters,
I have a question of economy. I am trying to be a good quilter and to thing properly. I need to wash my fabric. I have a bunch of 1/8 yards pieces in bright and bold colors. I don’t want to wash each alone because they are so small and that is a waste of water but I don’t want to wash them together have one bleed and ruin them all. I don’t have any fancy stuff like color block but I do usually wash fabric in vinegar to help set dyes. Any advice?

With new fabric I normally just wash all my colours together (lights, darks, brights, etc) in warm water (not hot) with a generous dash of vinegar and I've never had any issues with bleeding.  The only time I don't do this is if I have a really rich, bright red - that gets washed separately, since I find red does bleed.

Alternatively, could you hand wash each separately in just a little bit of water?  And maybe rinse them all together in cool water?  This way you could see if colour is coming out before you rinse, and rinse that piece separately.

I'm proud to report that I declared today a sewing day. I've locked myself in the basement (my sewing room) and am ignoring all sounds of children and hubby above! I'm trying to ignore the mess right now and just get a sewing on this mug rug! I think I need to find something to watch though to drown out the sounds of those little one's!

I know what you mean about swap anxiety though...  I went ahead and made yours today with the original fabrics that I'd bought for it (I was going to wait for the ones I'm getting Tuesday but decided I liked the original fabrics after all, once I pieced them together).

I am super anxious hoping you like it!

I've not been on Craftster much lately - work at the office and my other swap have consumed me lately!  But I will be shifting gears to my partner's mugrug in the next two days - I'm excited to begin.  I have all the fabric, etc. - making a little quilt mug rug is my idea of FUN!   :D

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to let everyone know that my computer um died. Right in the middle of my big sewing day! And before I could of course print out the shapes I needed for some appliques. I've stolen the hubby's computer but can't steal it all the time. So if your curious why I'm seeming quiet, its cause I'm using an ipod 95% of the time until we get my comp up and running again! But I'm still here!!! My rug should be done shortly (as soon as I install the darn printer driver on hubby's computer and figure out how to resize images without gimp on here!)

We have some awesome rugs in the gallery so far! Keep being awesome everyone!

In the mean time I'll be in the corner banging my head against the wall!

Ugh. I just braved walmart to get a bit of fabric. I got to use mostly stash but, I just needed that one little piece. Its in the wash now and hopefully I'll be finished up by tomorrow!

Edited to add: So I finished up the top and am wondering how to quilt it. I've only done the 'stitch in the ditch' method but, that won't work for this. Any experienced people wanna give me some advice?  I'd appreciate it!

Hi everyone,

Made it home from Williamsburg, VA, late last night. Got into a real mess on the trip home in a town called Berkley Springs, Va. Appears they were having some type of big shindig...we sat in traffic for more than an hour to get thru the little town!

But anyway, I'm back safe and sound. Now have to go check out our gallery - hoping my partner posted a pic of the rug mug I sent her!

I sent today, but the postal lady I got was WAY too serious about her job.  She gave me a speech on how tracking numbers work (I didn't ask, but she seemed to assume I had never sent mail before), kept referring to the recipient as my "customer", AND wouldn't let me send my envelope as letter mail because "it contained items other than documents", even though it was just a very flat little 5x7 envelope.  Grr!  So it cost me $7.50 as a "package" rather than $2-$3 that it would have been as a "letter".  I didn't even know Canada Post had this policy, I've never had this issue before!

WHAT! I sent an embroidery hoop to the states a few weeks ago and only paid $3! My postal lady gave me the cheap price cause it fit through her little test thingy. (you know the plastic thing with the hole in it)
I'm sorry that you got a lame postal lady! I hate it when I get those type! (thankfully living in a small town has its perks, nice postal people every time!)

Always get them to try the. Letter thingie. And small packet mail is cheaper. No tracking tho.  No matter what if you ask for tracking.  It goes up. To 7.50. minimum.   That's why I lays keep my receipts.   I have been known to leave the post office and go back later when someone else is working because of that sort of behaviour.

I tried to get her to try the plastic thing (it very obviously would have fit through with no problem) but she refused, since it wasn't just documents.  I will try other post offices next time to hopefully find nicer workers!

I'm mostly done.  And I'm realizing why I don't sew on a machine very often.  I can't sew straight to save my life and one side of the rug ended up slightly bigger than the other because I've never done any kind of piecing before.  Not that what I made is complicated by any means, I just don't sew well.   :-\

It doesn't look too bad though.  I kind of want to keep it.

I have been done with the top for a week I have craft paralysis because of the binding

You can do it!!

I did my binding but when I washed it I found a couple spots that didn't tack down very well. So I need to redo it a bit wider this time! Then I'll be done and sending on Monday!!!!

I used this tutorial and it was really easy and looked nice!!

I also used that tutorial. It was my first time binding anything and it came out really nice!

I've been ready to send out for a few days now... just gotta get to the post office!

I'm just about done.  Another 3 minutes of sewing and I'm done.  Just waiting to hear back from my partner about what kind of tea she likes.  I was hoping I'd hear back by today so that I could send tomorrow.

EDIT: Heard back, but didn't make it to the Post Office.  I'll have to go on my lunch break on Monday.

I know a few of you have asked about Round 3! Sadly since my computer died and hubby's doesn't have a working version of word or excel I'm going to need to hold off on hosting a round until I get my new computer. Its looking like that won't be until next month sometime which would put the crafting dates a little to close to the holidays. Is everyone ok with waiting till January for round 3?

I'm sorry, sorry, sorry! I had a lot of trouble lately which took all my attention. -_-

Today my mug rug arrived, and it's so beautiful! Will write a longer post later.

I received my mug rug from Southern Flower and it is AWESOME! I love it, it's just perfect for me. The colors, the butterflies, everything! Plus she even sent a tea wallet with the flavors of tea that I can't wait to try. This swap was so much fun, can't wait for the next one.
Now I'm off to see if I can figure out how to post pics in the gallery.
Thanks again, SF!  ;D
