Title: Tokyo Subway Map
Post by: PwrToolChick on June 26, 2011 11:03:47 AM
I've finished the Tokyo Subway Map Quilt! YAY!!!!

I'm pleased with the final product. It's not nearly as good as Elizabeth Hartman's www.ohfransson.com (http://www.ohfransson.com)...but I'm ok with that. She is my current idol and I kinda have a girl crush on her.

I have been doing various crafts all my life. I've been married to my husband for a hundred years (maybe not quite THAT long). I have never made him anything. He asked me early in our relationship to make him a blanket. I started to crochet him an afghan back then but never finished. It was one of those things that I didn't like how it was turning out so I never finished it. Oops.

So this year, I decided to finally do something for the love of my life.

He loves it.

This is cool! Did you actually use a subway map for the "route"? Or is that just the name of the quilt pattern/style? Something like this would make a great memorabilia piece for a traveler :)

Beautiful! What a great gift for a husband and father. I want to make this someday. Plus, I think this would be a great reference to use for making quilts of other subway maps.:)

It's so pretty and cheerful! I really love the back too. Did you use a pattern for the kana symbols?

As soon as I saw the thumb nail, I knew you had done Oh Fransson's  Tokyo Subway quilt.  You did a fabulous job, but it doesn't look like the kids are going to let go of it - you may need to make another one. . .

This is gorgeous!  Absolutely stunning.

Is the quilting an allover meander?  It's hard to tell from the pics.

This is Elizabeth Hartman's design. It's a "stylized interpretation" of the Tokyo Subway system. The applique on the back is from her pattern.

If you look at the flickr group of the other quilters who have done this quilt, there are a LOT of different styles. Some with black background instead of white. Some with different backs. Someone even took the actual Tokyo Subway Map and duplicated it! Soooo cool!

Raindancing - it is a meander! I did a boxy style...my very first EVER machine quilting. I'll be making many more. This was so much fun!

My husband is thrilled with it. While I was making it, he told all our kids he isn't sharing. My youngest called him a "meanie head" because he wasn't going to share. I finished it around 8pm one night....it was an hour or two later, she was sleeping with his blankie.

Thank you all so much! I didn't start the quilt with the quilt-along. I found it after it was finished. LOL

When I started, I thought for sure that I had enough fabrics in my stash. I didn't. I have more decorator fabrics than cottons in my stash...so I bought a few fat quarters here and there. I had 3 prints for the longer lines and 2 prints for the shorter lines. My fabric variety is limited....but I really like the way it ended up.

That's such a gorgeous quilt!  I have seen your inspiration before.  I love your use of patterned fabric.  It looks so cute.  And the back is to die for!  It's such a creative use of the inspiration to complete the idea.
