Title: Whooo loves ya, baby? Owl paper clay sculpture for my hubby
Post by: SonjaBoo on February 14, 2011 04:35:57 PM
I recently discovered the joys of paper clay and have been playing around with it as much as possible! My husband is a big-time nature photography enthusiast, and I decided to put my new love of paper clay to the test for valentine's this year.  Hubby has been finding a lot of little screech owls lately (there are brown "red" ones and gray ones), and they tend to be snuggled up in a little knot in a tree when you spot them.  Someone in the local birding network said recently that they spotted a gray one in a tree, then it scooted down and a little red one popped up -- so they were living together in one little tree.  Forbidden love. :D

Anyway, that story inspired me to create an owl sculpture for my husband -- here's what I came up with:

I formed little owls and a heart out of paper clay and molded them onto a tree vivisection (a slice of tree -- they sell them at Michael's or any of your leading craft stores), then painted the paper clay stuff.

Another view -- you can see an accident I had with the red paint in this view, but when you hang the piece up on the wall it really isn't noticable:

And here's an example of one of the little guys in real life:

I might do some more touch ups with paint, but overall, it was a really fun project!

Oh thank you!  He really liked it, and I was thrilled.  I told him I wanted to be the gray one, so he'd have to be the brown one. ;D

I've never heard of paper clay but this is epic! and I love the forbidden love. Gosh I'm so showing this to my sister (she used to work with these cuties all the time when she worked in a rehabilitation center.)

Thank you so much NightOwl21! (Great name, btw. :D)  That is awesome that your sister was able to work with owls! I think that might be my husband's dream job.

This is adorable! I love that you used the wood for the background.

Thank you -- and DasGutterPup, I love your photo! I collect Pez, do you?

Wow, sorry for this late response...I don't check the "replies to your posts" too often! My husband was a mad PEZ collector, but he sold them all except for his favorites, so I made them a little shelf.  :)

Aww this is so sweet, and you've done such a great job on capturing the characteristics of the owls!

I have to say, perhaps I am a little behind with all things crafty as I have never heard of 'paper clay' before, but with such good results I can see why you are drawn to it!
