Title: sign language lamp
Post by: htking on May 27, 2005 03:04:55 PM
A lady came to my human development class to tell us about american sign language and gave us some handouts with symbols. and what better to do with knowledge than apply it to crafts??

my drum shade w/ ASL:

(sorry its fuzzy, its not like this in real life)

That lamp IS really really cool. How did you put the paper on?

very cool  8). Did you just the handouts in making the lamp or did you copy them on to some other surface?

Very cute!!!!! it looks very professional

Title: Re: sign language lamp
Post by: htking on May 27, 2005 04:08:50 PM
heres the deal:

i made a copy of the handout w/o all the titles, etc it had on it and printed it on normal computer paper, cut it to the size of the lamp, and then just mod-podged it on. it needed something to cover the paper edges, so i just used some skinny black ribbon to sort of finish it off.

pretty simple, no?

thanks for all the comments, and feel free to ask more if that wasnt clear!

You should pose your Brenda Bender that's standing on the base so that she's signing one of the signs on the shade.

I really really really dig this...really. I'll be doing something similar all the while giving due credit to you. I have these vintage black, white and red eye charts that now immediately need to be modpodged to a lamp.

That is so cool!  And I love the eyechart idea as well.  My boyfriend and I are about to get our very first apartment together without roommates, and I totally plan on "borrowing" this idea for our new lamps.  :)

Nifty lamp! Both my parents (and most of their friends) are deaf and they'd get a kick out of that.

Man, I love the lamp! It's adorable!

Now everyone in your house can learn the sign for "falling" like I did my freshman year of high school.

Where did you get the lamp from, originally?  Did you just modpodge the work sheets to a regular white shade or something else?

the lamp is from lowe's hardware store & originally had a wire of beads around the shade, but those were easily cut off (and saved, like a true craftster-- ha!) and then i used my printer/copier to crop/size the wrksheets. Then, they were all easily modpodged to the drum shade, dried, trimmed with ribbon, and voila!

I love this idea! My mother was deaf, so we had to learn sign (and make up a lot of our own signs!). This turned out so beautiful.

Unlike most of the posters in this thread, I don't know any sign language.  Well, except for that sign I make when someone cuts me off on the highway... but if I had a rad lamp like this, I bet I'd learn it in no time.  Three cheers for inspirational/educational furnishings!

10-10-10, 5 stars, many claps!  I have some questions though,  can u just buy a seperate shade and put it on tho a lamp or do u have to buy the whole lamp?  Also, can you print a sheet like that off the internet, and if so would u happen to know where???  once again, your lamp is so great!  keep it up
ps i have an idea to use the funnies (comics) think it'll work?

Awesome awesome lamp!  Super cute.  I was just wondering though, does putting the paper around it like that make it a fire hazard?  I remember my mom telling me to take these postcards off my lamp that I paper clipped on when I was about 12 because they might catch fire.  I think maybe she was just jealous of my crafty genius at a young age  :D

Cute and Educational. You will probably remember all of the signs now that you look at them so much.

Title: Re: sign language lamp
Post by: htking on July 22, 2005 03:08:37 PM
in response the comments/questions:

-you could do this for any lampshade. i only used the lamp i did because a drum shade is flat all around and easier to work with...plus i think it looks cleanest.

-i made a post on here before making this lamp about the possibility as a fire hazard and was assured that the mod podge/paper would be fine. i keep the lamp on for a while at a time and have had no problems/damage.

-i'm sure there might be sheets like this available online but i havent really looked since i already have them. look on google/google images!

-comics might be alright, but with the lamp on you'd probably see the back of the paper through them and might no be able to tell what it is anymore.....still worth a shot, though!

I *adore* this! I've been interested in ASL since I was about 9. My stepdad (who came along when I was 13) is HH/culturally Deaf, and he is VERY hard to buy for. My mom wouldn't go for the lamp in her decor, but I can think of tons of other things to apply sign and fingerspelling worksheets to...

OOO, extending the idea - you could assemble, by cutout or by computer manipulation, names, words, and phrases in fingerspelling.

Someone mentioned the newspaper print showing through the back of the comics - it might help if you mounted them on white paper before sticking them down.

Fan-freaking tastic! Good luck with the sale!

That's cool. I am an interpreter and I see a lot of items sold with the ILY (I Love You) sign on them.  I love it when I see artwork that incorporates other signs.  I mean, honestly, how often do people really go around signing "I love you" to complete strangers?  :)

i just mod podged the back of the paper and then stuck it to the shade, then dabbed mod pdge on the edges of the lamp to stick the ribbon on.
