Title: Elephant cuff bracelet (NOT an image transfer, no paint just polymer clay!)
Post by: maxxev on December 22, 2010 12:34:27 PM
Elephant cuff bracelet.
polymer clay, sanded and backfilled.
a Christmas pressie for my aunty. a few of you may remember i posted an ammonite bangle back in may with this technique ( original thread + tutorial :  https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=346176.0 ) i finally got around to creating something else. i wanted to try something a little more challenging though some parts didn't turn out as well as i had hoped im quite pleased with how well this turned out

i drilled holes in each side of the cuff and secured with ribbon to allow for more or an adjustable fit and greater security.

W.I.P shot taken prior to baking and sanding.

now all the christmas crafting is out of the way and im feeling more confident with this technique im looking forward to seeing exactly what i can do with it ;D

advice or comments are always welcome.

This is so wonderful! You did such an incredible job - it's a beautiful piece of artwork and your Aunt is going to be thrilled to receive it. The technique is so interesting.

This ROCKS!

You could win polyclay shows with that, it is fabulous! I can't believe how you could have the foresight to see how the black would fit in just right; looking like a perfect and detailed elephant :)

This is one of the most unique projects I've ever seen.  I LOVE the bow (and the elephant, but that goes without even mentioning!)
I'm wondering about the sturdiness of the clay. Everything I've made in polymere has broken eventually.  I might be doing something wrong though.

Incredible! The things that can be done with clay are simply amazing.

thank you. :)

the gap in the cuff is large enough to simply slip onto the wrist without bending the clay (my auntie is a very similar size and build to me so i was able to create a a good fit be modelling it on myself) so the strength of the piece dosnt worry me the design however does :-\
though the clay is baked on its still only a very thin layer so like a painted surface a deep scratch or gouge will ruin it. i haven't had any problems with my ammonites bangle in this regard though the design is far smaller but i found that despite the fact my bangles protrude more their smaller surface area makes them less prone to scratches than the larger flatter surfaces of the cuff bangles.
it was what she wanted though so i just have to see what happens :-\

Your work is beautiful. I have just started with polymere clay . I am trying to make cuffs but they keep breaking it is very Fustrating. I was wondering what type of clay you are using and what temp and time you are baking at. I have been using premo and some of them snap and break if i flex them . Any info would be much appreciated

thank you.

thats why i leave a gap large enough to slide onto the wrist without the need to flex the cuff. the ribbon simply ties to prevent the cuff slipping of the wrist :-\

i use fimo classic for my work as it seems to be quite a strong flexible clay but im not sure that it would withstand any extreme flexing even if you used a metal armature  :-\
baking times: i bake in stages for the recommended  length of time at the temperature recommended by the manufacturer. in this case i baked the white outer layer first then applied the black inner layer and baked again. the decoration was applied and the entire cuff baked a third time (im not sure what effect this may or may not have had on the cuff)
i genrally avoid making cuffs because im unsure of thair stength :-\ i prefer the closed strong shape of my bangles which i know are tough enough to withstand wear and tear and would not need to be flexed.

That's amazing!! Really inspiring work. I've not yet had a play with polymer clay but the posts on this forum have inspired me to buy some.. Looking forward to giving it a go after playing with some air dry clay the other day for the first time.
