Title: Go West young crafter! (Roadtrip)
Post by: machetebetty on May 25, 2005 03:10:02 PM
Hi everyone, I'm heading out west for a five-week roadtrip starting July 2nd, departing from Toronto. I wanted to know if there are any worthwhile shops (craft, fabric, especially yarn, vintage, thrift) and craft shows/fairs to check out while I'm there. Here is the list of destinations/times:

New Liskeard, ON (July 2)
Winnipeg, MB (July 5)
New Battleford, SK (July 7)
Edmonton, AB (July 12)
Jasper, AB (July 13)
Queen Charlotte Islands, BC (July 14 - 24)
Vancouver, BC (July 26 - 27)
Calgary, AB (July 29)
Lethbridge, AB (Aug 3)
Medicine Hat, AB

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Wow, thank you so much spirals420!

I will be going to Vancouver for a few days. If you're referring to the island, I don't think I could afford the trip.  That goes for Penticton too (I've heard awesome things about it too, but unfortunately I can only afford to go to one amazing place (that is, Queen Charlotte Islands)).

I will definitely do more research before the time comes, I just thought I'd call upon the craftsters of W. Canada. Thanks again for the info.  I might consult you again later this month.  ;D

Walk on ferry from Vancouver to Vancouver island is only $8 dollars. You can take a bus from anywhere in Vancouver to the ferry for about $4 and it costs $2.75 to get to downtown Victoria when you're on the other side. I highly recommend the trip, as I am bias and live here. But there are lots of great little shops and things to see in the summer.

in vancouver- you HAVE to hit main street. it's where most of the boutique clothing places are- they're really nice (but expensive). there are tons of vintage stores on main too. commercial drive is another area that's really good. and our chinatown has so much cool stuff. yarn stores- my fav is actually in NORTH vancouver (but there's a seabus that can get you there for the same price as a normal bus) it's http://knit-n-stitch.com/. SO NICE. my other fav place is birkland bros http://www.shared-visions.com/wool/ (on main street).

here's an article about vancouver you might find intersting- http://www.spunmag.com/article/050410tripping

but seriously- hit main street. between about 6th and 26th esp. if you go way up to 49th, you'll be in the east indian neighbourhood- TONS of gorgeous fabric.

also- i made this site a long time ago- it's more for electronic music fans, but it might help you a bit- http://www.geocities.com/mu-ziq/vancouver.html i'm gonna do an upadte soon, so check back before you go.

have fun- vancouver is great in the summer.

and get in touch if you have any questions. :)

When you're in Winnipeg, stop by the Exchange District. - tons of thrift and vintage shops on the west side of Main St. I usually visit the second hand stores on McDermot (right next to Main), but there are many treasures to be found in this entire area. Be sure to check out Toad Hall Toys on King St as well!!

Wow, you girls rock. I'm really going to have to be careful with my wallet when I head out...  :D  I will definitely make an effort to visit all the stores listed.

As for Victoria and Vancouver Island, I will have to see if I have enough time to visit. Hopefully!

Thanks a lot everyone.

So jealous!
I wish I could go on a great roadtrip like that! Maybe one day.

When you're in Lethbridge, check out a fun store called Vintage Funk. It's kinda antique shop-slash-vintage-etc. For a great thrift shop, try the CAtholic Church Closet (I think that's what it's called). Great deals and great stuff...except the clothes, lots of selection on some things but not much to catch your eye.

Travel safely,

Also if you are in winnipeg hit up The Osbourne Village. It's alittle wacky at times but some really cool shops.
