Title: Jellyfish Costume!
Post by: fishrubbergreen on November 06, 2010 07:16:51 AM

in action :

attempt at showing the lights :

Hey Everyone!

I was a jellyfish for halloween, specifically a Portuguese man of war, since I am Portuguese :)
It was well received by everyone on the streets in Brooklyn, and it was fun to wear.

This costume was made on the Saturday before halloween in a couple of hours, I only used things I had laying around : curling ribbon, battery operated christmas lights, LOTS of plastic shopping bags, duct tape, some cardboard and a plastic dome thing I had left over from doing a window display.

I wore an old white fringey dress (for the inner tentacles) and silver sequin leggings (to be like water). You can't see in the pictures but there are little lights in the head, which made it look awesome and creepy when going into a dark dance party!

I hope you guys like it!!!

Super cool jelly btw...

Define plastic dome thing  ;D also how the heck is that thing attached to your head?

the "plastic dome thing"  is one of these : http://www.complexplastics.com/balls/HEMISPHERES.htm

it is 24" inches in diameter i think...

i made a foam core circle the size of the flange on the base of the dome and cut out a hole in the center of it just the right size to on my head like a hat (but pretty high up on my skull so i could actually see.  then i used duct tape to make a couple of straps in the head hole - so that my tiny head wouldn't slide too far inside the dome.  i ran some strips on the red tulle (which is also stuffed inside) across the foam core disc - and then tied that under my chin for added support (needed for wind resistance, dancing and general rocking out).  the flange on the dome has a few holes in specifically made for bolting two domes together to make a circle.  i just poked some holes into the foam core in those spots and tied the foam core to the dome.

it was pretty windy that day and this was surprisingly stable, it never fell off or slid too much one way or the other.  i was able to see through my tentacles, and the chin strap never pulled much. :)

Impressive effect, but ASTONISHING engineering, especially if it was windy that night! I would have liked to have seen that walking down the street!
