Title: A night as Avatar
Post by: katastrophicallykat on November 02, 2010 07:15:04 PM
So this Halloween I decided to go as Neytiri from the movie Avatar. But I wanted to go all out, and I didn't wanna wear the bodysuit they were selling at the costume store. So I got airbrushed and wore colored contacts and fake teeth.

Here are the pics. I won Sexiest Costume that night!!!!

I made all the leather pieces: arm cuff, loincloth, and top.

And the back:

Looks great. WHo would want to spend hours on the computer to photoshop blue stripes? Great job on the leather. I would not want to wear just that in public, you are braver than I. :)

That's amazing! And oddly, you don't look very nude, I guess the human brain doesn't see blue as a skin colour. Love the tail too.

It was not computer done, but I'm flattered that you think so. It was all airbrushed, and it took three hours to do, not counting the time it took to make the leather top and loincloth. The tail was a furry costume mouse tail wrapped in latex and then painted to match my body.

That's incredible! And kudos to you for having the confidence, all of it looks awesome!

And yeah, isn't that a weird effect, Angry Angel?? I didn't feel very naked either.

It feels nosy to ask but - were you wearing underwear? Or alternately: did you have anything other than the loincloth in place to conceal your booty? I can't see anything there but I find it hard to believe you could be that brave/body-confident...

I started out the night wearing this:

But unfortunately the sticky silicone stuff didn't hold up. So to answer your question... I was totally naked for most of the night, yes. -blush-

Wow, that looks amazing! The effect is astonishing. And you must be very brave to go out like that!

Please ignore the people who accuse you of computer manipulation. Sometimes people can't stand the idea that someone else can do something they can't, so they need to cast aspersions :( Earlier this year someone accused me of using a computer transfer because they couldn't believe that I'd painted it, it's sad really. People here do plenty of amazing things I could never do, but just because *I* can't do something, doesn't mean that these talented people can't!

Wow, that's really impressive!
The details on your face are amazing and it almost looks like your skin is glowing.
It doesn't even look like a costume, you're like the real deal.  ;D

I love this, and I'm not even that fond of Avatar. (Really pretty movie tho)
I also agree with the fact that you don't look naked, just awesome!

You did a fabulous job! Seriously, the makeup looks great! I adore you ran around naked, I have had very *nude* costumes as well, and it's strange how quickly you stop feeling naked. I think it's all about the reaction of people around you give. If they are saying how great you look, you are way more willing to strut it! Great job!

it looks that way (computer made) cuz of the lighting/camera/type of paint/contrast..

Aw thanks! I guess they posted most of them on their facebook page then... Woops. I assumed that the ones they had on facebook were the same they had on the site.

Its just...the loin cloth looks so computer'd you know? and there are no shadows or rounding on the arms, legs or torso. Even airbrushed, the body would show some form. it looks quite flat, which is what made me think it was touched up in photoshop.

Calm down dear. I wasn't accusing her of anything, I was asking an honest question. I work with photographs for a living, and I've never seen anything like this before. There are no cast or core shadows anywhere on her whole body, which even paint wouldnt take away. It looks like a piece of paper cut out and pasted to the background. Its a strange effect, and thats why I asked. It has nothing to do with my inability to create are...LOL

I just went to the website of the professional photographers images, and they are drastically different from the ones posted...

Thats what made me think you must have enhanced the contrast is all...

To be honest, I'm so technologically challenged I wouldn't know how to do that...

The photos that I posted were taken with a friend's phone because I don't even own a camera. The flash was on. And there were other light sources. Maybe that's what's making it look flat? I don't know. I'm not a photographer, and I'm not a photoshop user either.

I didn't take offense at all to your question. But I am being totally honest when I say that these photos have not been enhanced in any way.

Anyhoot. That got a bit intense... Hope nobody's feathers are ruffled.

I went and looked at the photos and found several.  You look great in the photos, to me they don't look drastically different, just like they were taken in different lighting.  you look fantastic.

For some reason I feel compelled to toss in my two cents.  The photos have obviously been altered at least to protect the identities of some people (unless those people beside the original poster both suffer from some awful blurry face birth defect ;) ) Regardless of my opinion or whether the photos were doctored or not though, this isn't a photography contest, and this isn't a body makeup contest.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but since she didn't do the airbrushing herself, it's not really part of the DIY, right? We are looking at the costume she made (the leather pieces), which look unaltered to me when I look at the photos.  I'll be deciding where to vote based on the effort and skill put into crafting a costume and not on photography or retouching skills.

anyway, to katastrophicallykat, I think you look lovely, good luck in the challenge.

Hokay guys. Really the prize for this challenge isn't worth the time and effort of doctoring the photos. I mean seriously... isn't the prize a tee shirt or something? And getting featured on the site? The only doctoring, as pointed out, was blurring out faces on others that were present at the event. If it'll make everyone feel better, and to prove I have nothing to gain from editing the photos, I will withdraw from the challenge. This was my first challenge entry. It's been a pleasure. =/

Thanks so much!

I have a fabulous friend and makeup artist to thank for the airbrushing (he's in Georgia, if anyone wants his name, pm me), but I explicitly listed all the pieces I MADE. So...all the leather bits. I know it's a simple costume, but I was proud of it and felt like sharing.

That'll teach me.

I didn't honestly expect to win; that's not why I posted this. There's the Leeloo costume with the homemade suspenders from liquid silicone. There's the fabulously creepy donnie darko rabbit mask. There's the complicated terminator mask. There are the Yip Yips, the ringmaster, the candycorn fairy... All of these are a trillion times better than my own humble leather loincloth, top, and bracelet. But I was still darn proud of 'em, and I thought I'd show them off to my fellow craftsters.

I saw your post last night for the first time and was completely amazed.  I didnt have time then to post a comment.  Then I come back tonight to post how much I love your costume and was shocked by what has happened.  Your thunder has been stolen!  Well, Missie, I would just like to tell you that I think your costume is great...and 100% real!!!  There is nothing about this that I could have done myself, from the airbrush to braving the lack of clothing, but that doesnt mean I am going to attack you for it.  I will just admire you for it!

Don't you dare withdraw! Just ignore the bullies (or bully). In the 1st photo you can see where your shoulder causes an indention in the guys shirt, in the second photo the other girls black purse is going over part of your hip, and in the 3rd you can see your shadow on the ground. It is obvious that nothing has been altered on these photos other than the faces of other people. You did a damn fine job on the parts you made, and especially on your creativity in bringing your costume idea to life. Not to mention the simple fact that you have to be in top physical shape to pull this costume off, and you don't achieve that by doing nothing. So what if you did not personally do your own makeup? You think everyone else did their own makeup? I assure you most did not. I entered this challenge with a corpse bride/Emily costume and I did NOT do my own makeup. There are a lot of children's costumes on here and I am pretty sure they did not do their own makeup.
I think your costume is easily in the top 5 right now, and you EARNED it.

Title: Re: A night as Avatar
Post by: tamratoo on November 04, 2010 07:34:21 PM
i saw the pieces you MADE, but i honestly think most of your costume was your makeup, which you didnt do.  someone having their artist friend airbrush their eyeshadow on, is a completely different story than you having someone else do most of your costume.

perhaps a better home for this would have been the halloween section & not the costume contest challenge?

I believe that the challenge requirement is that some COMPONENT of your costume be made by yourself. This costume, as well as my own since I am not sure if you are addressing me or the OP, more than satisfies the requirement. Perhaps you should read the requirements? It does not specify a percentage that must be met. She has every right to have her costume in this challenge and it is an outstanding costume.

Oi. This is getting ridiculous. -headdesk-

Thanks for your support, tamratoo! I did read the challenge requirements, and like I said, I'm not going to win anyway, so why all the fuss? I cut all the leather bits, designed the top and bottom and pieced them together. I'm pretty sure that's well within the rules. I did post another entry under Halloween costumes. Just figured I might as well toss it in the challenge category as well since I was so pleased with the final product.

I honestly think you have a very good chance of winning. And I was not suggesting that YOU read the requirements, but rather that the person suggesting you should not be in the challenge should go back and read them. Heck, I only actually made the wig and did an alteration on the viel in my costume, everything else was stuff I already had. But I designed and executed the overall costume, just like you did with yours.
Don't sell yourself short. You have more of a chance at winning this than you think. You obviously have other people feeling threatened enough that they feel the need to question your right to be in this .... LOL

Haha. I was actually directing that at somethingcelestual. Should probably have started a new paragraph... But yeah I'm super flattered you think I have a chance; I honestly think there are more deserving costumes (like I'm super impressed with the Donnie Darko bunny mask...super impressed). I saw your costume, too, and I gotta say I think your wig looks a lot better than the ones I've seen in costume stores.

Man, I'm really disappointed at how mean-spirited this has become. It's very 'unCraftsterlike' to start accusing people of manipulation, not 'making enough' of their costume, etc. There is no threshold of how much of a costume needs to be homemade in order to be entered, as long as people are honest about which bits they made, and she was. If you don't think it deserves to win, don't vote for it.

If she hadn't been painted, and had just worn the little leathery things and her tail, I doubt people would be calling for her to withdraw because she hadn't made enough of the costume. I think the paint is so striking people are getting a little crazy. She did say in her first post that the body paint was done by someone else. These costume contests are supposed to be fun, not cut-throat.

katastrophicallykat, I'm very sorry that this is how your first challenge entry turned out, I hope it hasn't put you off. Craftster is usually such a friendly, welcoming place, catty comments are not the norm here and that is what makes it such a great site compared to other internet forums. Please don't be discouraged! I'm sure this is just a blip, Craftster is a very warm place. Most people here love your costume!

argh..yes it was horrible! it actually doesn't come off WITHOUT rubbing alcohol. mind you, that means no rubbed bare spots or getting it on people by accident, but yikes! I didn't think that one through, it was...an adventure to say the least. paint over a nylon body suit next for me! (and I do have plans for a shiva from final fantasy...go blue people!! :) )

I will not tolerate any more mean-spiritedness.  In case anyone forgot, it is against the rules (https://www.craftster.org/rules.html#menu3a).  Anything not in the spirit of Craftster will be deleted.  Let's move on.

I'd just like to add my two cents in saying that you look amazing and are very, very brave. I envy your comfort and ease at venturing out so boldly! And I mean this in a totally non-creepy way, but you have a very good figure to pull off the long and lean 'hunter/gatherer' physique the Na'vi are depicted with. By far one of, if not the, best take on the Avatar styling I've seen so far this year. Simple, yet effective. Nice job. =)
