12/06/10 - It's time to vote!  Scroll up to see the voting poll! :)

12/01/10 - The entry board is open!  https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?board=456.0 (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?board=456.0)

Good luck! :)

To celebrate the release of Paper + Craft (http://www.chroniclebooks.com/index/main,book-info/store,books/products_id,8933/title,Paper-+-Craft/), a delightful book offering 25 unique paper projects, we are more than excited to create this challenge that actually uses a few of the downloadable templates that accompany the book!  We're challenging you to take one of the three templates below, and craft it with a bit of your own personal holiday flair.  Just as with the projects in the book, all you need to get started is paper, scissors, glue, and a dash of creativity!  Of course, you can add all sorts other materials as well! :)

At minimum, you must use at least one of the templates below, somehow use paper in your project, and give it a holiday twist for this time of year (November/December).  You can choose any holiday from November or December -- religious, national, secular or even unofficial!  You must use a template in your project, but it doesn't have to be how the template was originally intended in the book.  Perhaps you want to use the template for the Mommy and Me Paper Shoes and make a paper Christmas art installation for your wall.  Maybe you want to use the template for the Keepsake Paper Box to make 102 paper boxes to build a table for your Thanksgiving feast.  Work your creative freedom and have fun with paper!

Here are the templates we've snagged for use in the challenge.  Click a photo below to download the printable, full-size template.  These are .pdf files, so you will need Adobe Reader to view and print them.  You can get Adobe Reader for free here (http://get.adobe.com/reader/).

The winner of this challenge will get a Chronicle Books prize pack from Chronicle's line of crafty books (http://www.chroniclebooks.com/index/store,books/path,1-4-22/title,Crafts/), as well as a selection from one of Craftster's shops!

Rules: (Please note the dates are shorter for this challenge, so craft & enter accordingly!)

  • Craft your project during this challenge period (Nov 1 - Dec 5 2010) only.  Projects created before this timeframe will not be removed from the entry board, but they will be excluded from the voting poll.
  • Post your craft during the period of Dec 1 - Dec 5 2010.  No sooner.  No later.  On Dec 1 2010 there will be a special folder created for entries.
  • Voting will happen from Dec 6 - Dec 9 2010.
  • Enter only ONE project.  Your entry can have multiple components to it.

Originality:

It's probably impossible to know whether your project is 100% original, has never been posted on Craftster, or made by anyone else in the past.  But if your project was definitely inspired by something you've seen before, please give credit to that project. :)

Prizes:

At the end, I'll set up a poll right here and the first place winner (US or non-US) will get:

(1) a crafty prize pack from Chronicle Books (http://www.chroniclebooks.com)!
(2) their project in the Featured Projects area
(3) their project in the Craftster Blog (https://www.craftster.org/blog)
(4) and this prize from us at Craftster.org -- any one item from one of Craftster's online shops!

ooh! question, if I give it to my brother for his birthday/ Hanukkah, and have it sort of lean more towards the birthday side (with appropriate winter theme) will it still count?
will rephrase:
If it has a holiday theme, but leans more towards winter theme,
while still being holiday themed, will it count?

two more questions:
so.. If i print out an image of one of the templates, and then say, trace it on blue paper and cut out, will it count?
or will I need to print it out on blue paper from the beginning?

and another, On the front page, near the craftster craft challenges image slides, it doesn't say challenge #57, it only has #56 and #55?

two more questions:
so.. If i print out an image of one of the templates, and then say, trace it on blue paper and cut out, will it count?
or will I need to print it out on blue paper from the beginning?

I plan on using the template mainly the outline of the template...is that alright? or does it have to be the full template as is?

At minimum, you must use at least one of the templates below, somehow use paper in your project, and give it a holiday twist for this time of year (November/December).  You can choose any holiday from November or December -- religious, national, secular or even unofficial!

So by unofficial holiday you mean we can pick from the lists on these site too?

Yep, you have free creative control to use the template(s) however you wish!  We hope to see some great variations and creativity with how the templates are implemented into projects.

I didn't look through the lists in their entirety, but any holiday, November to December, a-okay.  "Unofficial" should encompass all of those crazy oddball holidays!  If those are the lists used as examples in the Monthly Odd Holiday Swaps, you hit the nail on the head!  Have fun! ;D

so excited to start this challenge  ;D

one question though..
for the flower template are there any specific directions?  I printed it out, and in the picture it's like poofy and 3-D but in the template it's just 2 size flower cutouts...
what do I doooooooo?  :P

if i'm correct, you print the page, And cut out the bottom four templates. The first template on top is for an example. Do NOT cut it out. Then take them, and slightly fold  the petals up. Then place them on top of each other, biggest on the bottom to smallest, with each one having it's petals between the petals beneath it. If you don't know what I mean, look at the flower you did not cut out.

It should be poofy...

For the first time, I actually know EXACTLY what I'm going to do for this challenge! I don't know if it'll blow everyone away, but it'll sure look great as part of my home decor!

One question, though: I don't have a printer, so I'll have to trace the templates off of my laptop screen (ghettoooooo, I know). This still counts, right? I'll still be using the template; I just don't have the ability to print it.

Yay!

No directions are provided (they are in the book, though, of course!), so feel free to use the templates in whatever manner you'd like.

I have the same problem with mine :P
I used almost a whole bottle of sizing just to get the stupid wrinkles out of parts of it :-[ and now my whole sewing room reeks.  Sadly, Vermont weather doesn't permit airing out either :( haha but it's definitely worth it, even if I don't win.  I can now say I intimately know my iron ;) haha

This might be a silly question, but will determine if what I'm thinking will be ok.

Do we have to use ALL of the template? For example, could I just use the octopus from the animals template or would I need to use the other animals as well?

when you say majority...
if I'm using the flower template, would it be ok if I left out the smallest flower out of the four?  In no way do I have the patience to cut out a hundred of those tiny little ones  :D haha so yeah, I hope skipping out on the smallest is ok  ??? haha I'm damaging enough brain cells from the stink and getting enough blisters from right handed scissors (oh, if only I could afford left handed beauties :P ) without cutting out those tiiiiiiiiiny ones D:

Just use your best judgment! :)  We're not counting or measuring the final projects, but we do want the templates utilized as much as possible.

Altering the templates is fine.  Removing a bit of a shape is fine.  We just don't want someone to use a 1x1" square, and say it was the box template in a past life or something like that. :D  Please do your best to use the majority of the template you choose. :)

I was going to ask if anyone else was having trouble with the box lid fitting correctly, but then I realized I had simply written down the wrong dimensions. haha... so like me.

Just discovered that I'm a month late :P but I still have till the 5th, that should be enough time for me, right? I'm determined to make it.
