Title: the Ongoing Offer What You Have Swap is back! - Discussion thread.
Post by: gavagai on October 31, 2010 06:02:08 AM
This is the thread where we discuss anything about the Ongoing Offer What You Have Swap - the November-December-January rounds. The signup thread for anyone who wants to join for January is here: https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=368744.0 and I will try to reduce the massive amount of text in the first post (I am not very successful yet though...  :-\), but also, feel free to post any questions or comments here!

In short the swap works like this:
1) The first person posts a list of supplies/crafted items that they would like to swap away.
2) Someone claims one thing from the list posted (or more if the lists has a 2 for 1 section or something like that). Then they post their own list.
3) Someone claims something from that list and posts their own list...
...and so on. There is one list active at each point, and anyone in the swap (who is prepared to post their own list) can claim from it.

Come on everyone, let's get started!  ;D

CraftyOctober, I love that kusudama. I so want to make one of my own now!  :D How did you learn to make them? Is there a good book or some online resources you could recommend?

I used this website!
http://foldingtrees.com/2008/11/kusudama-tutorial-part-1/

I wanted to make one with more colorful paper, but the road atlas was all I had on hand that wasn't white, haha!

YAY!  Just sent in my questionnaire!  So glad this swap is back!

I have a question... I know we can't list things that are US only, but I was wondering (since I have TONS of yarn and fabric to destash as my GMIL keeps bringing bags and boxes full of the stuff to me)...
could I have a flat rate listing that was flat rate medium size box for US folks and flat rate envelope/small box for folks out of the US?
It's cool if it's a no go, I just thought I would ask... I really need to get this stuff out of here...

Post by: calluna on November 01, 2010 03:23:32 PM
I'm joining too!  :)

ZS - In my opinion, it should be the smaller flat-rate package for everyone. You could then send more than that if you choose to, but everyone would be claiming the same basic package.

That kusudama really is beautiful, btw.

I am also quite into keeping this swap a true worldwide swap, which would mean that it is not o.k. to offer different things/sizes for different countries, but I am happy to discuss it.

Title: Re: the Ongoing Offer What You Have Swap is back! - Discussion thread.
Post by: PixieVal on November 02, 2010 09:36:36 AM
ZS- I see where you're coming from as far as shipping costs, but I agree with Calluna and gavagai too, as it should just be a small flat rate box of supples offered on your list.

It should be alright now anyway.  :) And I am sorry that I missed your first signup form. I got so many of them there for a while. It's just great how big this swap is becoming. I guess letting it rest for a few months really worked!  :D And so much great stuff is offered! I try to check the thread as often as I can, but still things get grabbed before I have even seen them!  :D

Been meaning to do this one for awhile! I sent in my questionnaire. I am planning on taking pics of everything I have tonight so that I can post as soon as approved. As far as Christmas presents go, I have tile coasters and jewelry already done, and lots of fabric in my stash up for grabs. Anyone interested in jewelry making supplies or rubber stamps? Let me know!

A question came up... I got a question about items that are not allowed into certain countries (like Australia or New Zeeland). Do you think it's o.k. to offer such items, even though it cannot be said to be offered worlwide? I think that I think  :) that it should be o.k., since it's not a limit put up by the swapper but by customs. If there is a country who wouldn't let pinup themes in, it would still be o.k. to post fifties pinups fabric, right? and a person from such a country just wouldn't claim it.

So, I think it should be o.k. posting things not liked by Australian customs as long as there is at least five other items that is liked by Australian customs on the list as well. What do you guys think?

That sounds fair to me.  :)

Title: Re: the Ongoing Offer What You Have Swap is back! - Discussion thread.
Post by: Dawl on November 04, 2010 07:15:46 AM
I think it would be next to impossible for people outside of the countries that ban certain items to know everything that's banned everywhere else. I agree with they can be posted, but it's up to the claimant to know not to claim them if they're not permitted where they live. There's no way we can know what all other countries ban and don't ban...just offer what we have, if it doesn't work for certain people, it doesn't work.

Sounds fair, but I still think that if they are things that you know won't get through Australian customs (I guess it has something to do with plants or animals) it would be a good thing to offer at least five other things as well. But I guess we don't need a special rule for this. If it becomes a problem in any way, we will deal with it then.

Thank you for your advice.

Maybe it would be good to find a link (or maybe there is one posted somewhere on craftster already) to what's allowed to send where... there is probably one on the usps website....

Title: Re: the Ongoing Offer What You Have Swap is back! - Discussion thread.
Post by: gavagai on November 04, 2010 08:46:41 AM
I found this: http://pe.usps.gov/text/Imm/immctry.htm
Not sure I want to go through that before mailing though.  ;D I think just use common sense, and if you know you are not allowed to bring a certain item into your country, don't claim it.

No, but it will help those in other countries to check before claiming something they are unsure about...

Absolutely!

On the other hand, some of those prohibitions are a bit weird. Like according to that list you are not allowed to send horror comics to Great Britain or "measuring instruments marked in units not complying with French law" to France. I imagine there could be times when these things could be offered, and given the nature of friendly craft swap items I don't think Great Britain or France would mind.

I just sent my questionnaire so hopefully I'll be joining you soon.

I was cleaning out my craft area this week and found some great things that I was in a pickle about.  They were too wonderful for Good Will ( you know what I mean, someone who won't appreciation them may get them...) and I certainly wouldn't stick them in a yard sale.  They need to go to good crafty homes.  Believe it or not, I didn't know this swap existed.  When I saw it this morning, I knew my "toys" had found their way off their own little island of misfits and into the hands that will use them properly.  I can't wait to get my list up.

I just started a new gallery: https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=364113.0
Because of the nature of this swap, not much is usually posted in the gallery; it's all in the swap thread already. But I agree that there is a need for a place for such things that are not on a picture in the swap thread or custom made items, so please post such items here: https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=364113.0 (not mandatory, but fun  :)).

I added some fabrics to my list. By the way, I marked some of it quilting cotton and some "home dec cotton". Does that make sense? (English is not my mother tongue.) I mean to say that the second kind of fabric is much sturdier/heavier than the first.

Makes perfect sense.  I just made a claim from your list.  It's my first claim and first time listing so you might want to pop over and make sure I did everything right  :)

Wow! We're 24 swappers now! If a couple of more people join I will need a co-organizer. Ayone interested in co-organizing? Basically it would just mean that I send all the signup forms to you so you have all the info about the swap and are ready to take over in a case of emergency (like if I have a heart attack or get abducted by aliens or something  ;D).

I'll co-organize, on the condition that you make an effort to resist the aliens if they try to abduct you, gavagai! Just hold on to the leg of your bed with both hands.  :D

Giddiup222 - is the reddish stripe fabric also flannel or is it cotton??

:) Well we're not over 25 yet, so no urgent need.

Another thing. This is not directed to anyone in particular, just a general reminder... Please be as specific as you can when posting pictures, so there is no doubt how much is one claim. Be sure to make clear if one picture counts as one item or one item of the ones in the picture is one item.

gamemom...I'm sorry for making my post confusing...the collection of floss and aida fabric are together...you can pick something else!! =]

I apologize for not making mine clearer...I didn't want to break anything up, and I didn't want to take a bazillion pics to post, either...I certainly didn't mean to confuse....I had it all figured out in my wittle head... :P

I'm sorry i just saw these! But I will claim again and clarify it on there. Sorry about the confusion but the Reddish fabric. Its good quality cotton. Hasn't been washed so still a little stiff.
And the embroidery thread is 2 for 1 claim so pick 2 colors. I have lots of colors too. Like 150, so if there is a color you don't see, chances are, I have it!

I really wasn't refering to anyone in particular. Just a general reminder, since this kind of swap (pick one, pick two, pick three...) can be confusing, and it is good to have in mind to be as clear as you can.  :)

I doubt it's confusing, I've just never done this type swap so I think I'm making it more difficult than it is ( I do that :P).  Yay, I'll go look and see what else I want to pick and pm you.

It is also very helpful--for everyone--to list what each item is, beside their photos, because often it isn't clear from just looking at the picture.

I think that's what I'm doing.  When you say "copy all the code" do you mean scroll down and highlight the entire post then click copy?  Because that's what I'm doing.  It's bringing the text over fine but no photos.

What I mean is when you edit your old claim post, the box to type comes up.  Copy the text in that editing box (highlight and scroll and copy) and then paste it into your new claim and it should work.   But don't just go to your old post and copy the text from the post without going into the edit mode because then it will only capture the text, but not the image urls.  Does that make better sense?   :)

Avesthel- you did a great job of explaining, but I thought I would add some pics for gamemom since she says she's "computer illiterate". I know I like pics when I have trouble with things.  :-* :-*

Go to your last claim and click modify

It'll look like this after you click modify

Then highlight everything and copy.

and then you can just back out of that screen, or exit out, and paste it into your post.

Each of us had a first time doing everything, and chances are we had to ask! So we def don't think you're dumb!

how do you make pictures appear next to eachother?

I had to go into one of my old posts and experiment cause I've never tried this one before.
Normally when you post 2 pictures it would look like this:

That puts one directly under the other.

To make them post right next to each other, post both images directly next to each other with no space, like this:

To get more in a line, use the thumbnail version! :)

So many claims!  :o

To make it a bit easier to update, it would be great if you could mention the send by date and exact wording of the claim when sending me a PM about sending or receiving, so please put "sent" or "received" in the subject line and something like this in the PM:
**********************
Send by Nov. 17
gavagai to guacaMolly - cotton scraps #1, 1 FQ of red hippos, 1 FQ multi-colored animals

Sent today!
**********************
It makes it easier to find in the long claims list.

But that's just me

Lady Pistola: Maybe you could consider lowering your prices a bit and/or adding more things to your list. I know it has only been a little over 24 hours, but considering how many we are and the previous activity in the swap maybe it is time. Also, maybe one FQ or one store bought pillow case per claim is a bit on the lower side?

Please just consider this a suggestion. I don't mean to complain or force you to change anything, but maybe just take a look and see if you think the pricing could be adjusted in any way?

Yea, I can't remember if I have any claims available atm, I think I have one but I haven't had a chance to go through and double check all that... still sick and baby hasn't been allowing for any rest (she's been teething and having a growth spurt at the same time and I am about to lose my mind from lack of sleep).
I do have a claim I need to ship... I had planned to do that Wed. and then yesterday and I still have hopes to get it done today (why, yes I am wearing fleece pajama pants and tank top with no bra and a bathrobe, and I haven't showered yet... and it's almost 3pm... what of it!?!)

Casey1201, for next time it may be a good idea to state even more clear if each item in the pictures is one claim. I don't know if I am being overly fussy, but sometimes it is hard to know if a picture is a set or two or three separate items.

And the swap is fowing again! Yay!  ;D

Well, if you don't claim you won't get anything!  :P Also, there is always next month. As long as you claim something this month next month you will have two claims, because considering the interest in this swap I am pretty sure it will continue with another round.  :)

Also, I updated the claims list. Some claims have been received, so a few more people should be able to claim now.

Also, that doesn't mean that you can only claim one thing this round, just that whatever you send out has to be received before you claim again.

Ha!  Want-needs have gotten me enough yarn to completely cover the guest room bed 1' deep!  D:  But I did claim, even though my fabric stash isn't much better...  Now hopefully someone wants to take something out of my house!

I've been slow to claim anything.  I'm still adjusting to life as a mom and anything I claim needs to be something useful for a project that I'm already thinking about or able to be given or made into gifts for the holidays.  I'm trying to be frugal but y'all make it difficult! I've almost claimed something off of everyone's lists!

I hope you can find something that fits your needs so you can join in the swap with us.   :D

I'm not sure.  Let me see if I can find a scrabble tile to check and I'll let you know.  :)

Scrabble tiles do fit... perfectly on the long side, but on the shorter side of the tile there is a gap.   I tried it both ways.   And the tile is too big for the rectangle tray.

I'm not sure if they will work for you or not, but here is a pic to see the gap so you can decide:

Those are great pendant trays.  I've made a few of my pals baby photo pendants out of them and they loved it.  These are the kinds that are lead and nickel free if I'm not mistaken.  I'd be all over these, but I just ordered some.  :(

Arachnea -- I didn't think they would when I saw the tile in the tray.   :-\

Atsuko -- I really cannot remember since I bought them a long time ago, but I generally try to avoid lead products when possible.  :)

PS>  And to anyone else interested in them, I decided to bump them down to 1/4 claim each.  :)

After looking at them closely I think the cheaper ones are made in China, not the US and are not as thick as the ones you are offering so it's a matter of quality vs quantity.  :)  I just needed a bunch to craft for Lana's friends so I went the cheaper route.

Yes, you could use them for poly clay :) they're not real deep, but deep enough to put a thin layer in. I've done a few of them with clay in them, they turn out really nice I think :)

Gavagai,

I saw you in your last claim you were getting confused with how to write the claims status part of your post.  I thought the old way was confusing too so I went with something more like the Ongoing Wish swap:

----------------------------------------------
Claims (Outstanding) I am Allowed: 3
Claim #4 / 0 not sent yet / 2 sent / 1 received
----------------------------------------------

Maybe this might be better?

----------------------------------------------
Claims (Outstanding) I am Allowed: 3
Claim #4 / 0 not sent yet / 2 In transit / 1 received
----------------------------------------------

I think I like that better.  :D

This is the most clear to me.  I just add up the first two parts to see how many outstanding claims I have (so I can see how many more claims I can make!  ;)  ).

Anyway, just trying to help.  Maybe there's a better way but this one seems to work well for me.  :)

I like that.  :) It makes sense. I think what confuses me the most with the other way of writing it is that it is not clear whether the claim you just made is included in the number of claims made or not. This way it is very clear that this claim is number 4. However, if you add up the first two parts above (as you say) you get two claims not sent or in transit, but as long as you remember there is another claim waiting to be made (you really have three outstanding claims, not two, so you can't claim anymore right now) that is o.k. Maybe it's just better to take the # of claims (4) minus the claims received (1).

Anyway, great if more people write about this. Maybe there are more ways (even though I like yours).  :)

To me it makes the most sense to state it this way.  I have 2 outstanding so I know I have my last claim left and that is the claim I am making at the moment of posting.  But that's just me and the way I think.  :)   But I think that the claim # minus number of packages received is also a good way to think about it and makes sense too.  :)

Hmm... further thinking.  Well, this makes sense for when your claim #'s have gone beyond your first 3 (or 2 or 1) claims.  But those first few are easy to keep track of, it only gets confusing when you get to #4 and beyond.  To me at least.  :)

Still not the best of pictures though. It looks more sharp and solid colours IRL. The images are a bit blurry.

That format confuses me a bit, since the same packages fall into several categories, like outstanding claims and in transit are the same packages, but maybe that's just me.

I think it makes sense to only have a package appear in one place, like combine outstanding and sent. I also add the claim I'm currently making to my outstanding tally, because by the the time someone's reading it, that's how many claims I've made... does that make sense?

Title: Re: the Ongoing Offer What You Have Swap is back! - Discussion thread.
Post by: greybird on November 16, 2010 02:12:17 PM
I like that!   Ok, so if we include the current claim in our count... what about this?

----------------------------------------------
Claims (Outstanding) I am Allowed: 3
And counting this claim I am:
Claim #5 / 1 not sent yet / 1 in transit / 3 received
----------------------------------------------

No tricky math needed anymore since the claim # should add up to all the other claims.  I just add my current claim to the 'not sent yet' total.  :)

Yep, I put the clay in the bezel cup then pop it all into the clay oven, when it comes out I either pop the clay out and glue it in the bezel or put a thin layer of resin on top to seal that puppy in so it doesn't "pop out" later

It says:
*******************
SAAB-andan
Jag har den.

Made in Trollhättan
*******************

The Swedish text means something like: the SAAB spirit - I've got it.
And Trollhättan is the city where SAAB cars traditionally are made.

Oh, they'll be back! I'm just glad to know someone is interested. They've been sitting, unloved, in my Shop the Swap shop for months!

Oh, please tell me it'll be after I have my sad, one claim back!  I wanted one of those so badly...  Sadly, I was at work and my phone loads the pages WAY too slowly...  :(

I've added more to my offerings!  If no one claims anything by this evening, I'll find more stuff to offer up, but... I'm worried too many people are just out of claims after the frenzy the other day.  :(

Any suggestions about what I have offered, etc, are gratefully accepted!  If there's anything in particular people are looking for... I may have it somewhere in the pit of my craft room and just have forgotten about it!  So let me know.

I added new stuff yesterday and can add new stuff today as well if need be... I am just wondering if no one is claiming because all the claims got used up on that epic claim day last week that I totally missed, lol.

I would claim from you ZS, but my claims are all used up, and we're leaving town tonight, so I wouldn't have the chance to mail anything out.  :(

Well after getting hit by at least 8 inches of snow in the last 4 days, I finally trudged out to the post office to get everything sent out.  :)  It's too bad I found this swap so late in the month, I won't have time to make any more claims...

de-clutter...heard that!  I've gotten quite a bit weeded out...even if it doesn't go here at the swap...it'll be going at end of the month to charity or thrift store! =]
And if I come back next month(or January after the HoLiDaZe) I'll still have things to offer. :D

I updated the claims list. Also, when PMing me about a sent or received claim please mention who the claim is from/to, when the last send by date is and what is in the claim (preferably with the same wording as in the claims list). It helps a lot!

Example of a couple of perfect messages (thank you Avesthel and
Zelda.Suicide  :D)

I'm wondering how an item is officially "received" - one of my claims that I sent out has been delivered two days ago, according to the DCN, but I haven't had word from the person it was sent to - probably holiday jumble and what not. Anyway, can I count that as received and add that claim back into my number?

I think you still have to wait until you've heard back from the recipient.   ???  But I could be wrong.

Yes, that's what I think as well. You can however send a reminder to the recipient, asking them to PM you and me (the organizer) if they have received.

I think it depends on the organizer. I've had a few partners who I didn't hear from in the ongoing wish swap. All the times, I just PMed the organizer and she said I could claim again.  I would PM the partner and then PM the organizer if you don't hear back from them in a couple days.

I really wanna join this...I have an addiction to shopping and sometimes I pick things up for crafts I don't do simply because I know someone on craftster might need it...I SAID I wasn't allowed to join any more craft swaps until I had cleaned up my crafting supplies area...but this might help me de-clutter!

Throwing this out there, would anyone be interested in used purses?  I can't give them to Goodwill because they all have something wrong with them - one has a tear in the canvas, one's strap broke, etc - but I can't make myself throw these away, because I love bags with lots of HARDWARE, and I keep thinking some intrepid crafter might want to salvage hardware, zippers, lining, even the leather itself from them...anyone interested?

Yeah, this round is moving really slow. I rarely do papercrafts, and have drawers full of stamping stuff that I hardly ever see as it is, and I'm trying to not acquire objects I won't use. Maybe the list can be reposted with new items or markdowns to encourage a claim?  :)

Title: Re: the Ongoing Offer What You Have Swap is back! - Discussion thread.
Post by: gavagai on December 09, 2010 01:50:13 PM
I have gotten a couple of PMs and also saw the posts in the swap thread. This is the wording in the first post of the swap:

"This is an ongoing swap: Claim an item from the list of the last person who posted and post your own list in response. It makes a chain. When we get to the end of the month, the very last person to post a list will be the first person to post a list at the beginning of the next month, if Craftsters decide to organize a new round at that time."

So the last list is always carried on to the next month. Otherwise someone would always get one claim less than they send each month and someone would get one more. This way you always get as many claims as you send. And the last list posted for November still counts as part of the November round, because (in this case) JessySihk needs it to be received to get even (and get positive feedback) for the November round.

I am sorry that I have been a bit late on updating  :-\, but happy that this swap is moving!  :D

Everything should be up to date now in both swap threads (Nov. and Dec.). Please take a look and see if something is wrong. There are a few packages that should have been received by now, but I haven't heard anything about it. Also a couple of packages (from lapoli and Zelda.Suicide) are late (or sent but didn't send a PM to me about it).

Great if you all could take a look and see that everything is correct.

Title: Re: the Ongoing Offer What You Have Swap is back! - Discussion thread.
Post by: gavagai on December 12, 2010 07:12:54 AM
I just claimed and posted my list. Will of course update it if not claimed.

Please everyone remember that the 48 hour rule becomes more important this month than last, because now we are fewer swappers which means fewer claims, which means that you have to keep a closer look at your list when you have posted it. You are required to make significant changes to it when 48 hours have past and keep making changes until claimed. Since there are fewer swappers/fewer claims prices tend to go down, which is good to be aware of. Everyone must be ready to adjust to this. Also, if it took a while to get a claim the last time you posted, it is a good idea to update your list until next time you post, maybe add new things or start with a "sale".

Almost always when I write things like this people wonder if I mean them. I mean noone and everyone (me included). Just a general reminder that is.  :)

The person shipping. So you claim an item you want from person A, then person Z claims from you. "A" pays shipping to you, you pay shipping to "Z"

I updated some things in the November and December round (claims, feedback...). Sorry for not PMing all the people concerned about it, but everything should be up to date again.

This round is slower. There are much fewer people in this round and I think many of us are busy preparing for Christmas (or other holidays) in different way. For me it means loads to do at work, but I am looking forward to a two weeks vacation for Christmas/New Year.

Still I love this swap though, and I am always tempted to claim! I have my eyes on a few things in most of you people's lists. :)

I would love to hear what people are looking for - who knows, you may remember you have something like it in the back of your closet you really don't want!

I, personally, am always up for yarn and fabric, though I shouldn't be! I'm also a bellydancer, so anything sparkly that could be used in a costume would probably catch my eye.

....oh, and pattern books.  I keep looking at the Swedish Macrame book, because, hey, macrame bat!  Not that I need a macrame bat, but... it's a macrame bat!

Also, if anyone had alphabet or number beads, I'd be all over those.

A list is a good idea. I just picked up a alphabet beads I wouldn't mind parting with. I'll have to think about it.
I am always on the look out for a "good deal" on yarn. Obviously I'm not going to claim yarn I can get at the store for a few bucks when I know I will spend hours crafting whatever I'm claimed for. So it would have to be a pretty good lot (or specialty yarn).

Other than that, I can always use stamp carving material, interesting beads or buttons, storage, and possibly crochet hooks. Really I never know what I want until I see it :)

I am doing some last minute crafting and such for my last few items so I'm not on as frequently, but I do pop in and check occasionally.  :)

I'm not participating this month--only co-organizing--because to me it's just not worth dealing with the post office in these weeks before Christmas!  :-[ This swap seems to do best when there are several months in between rounds, for some reason.

I don't think we can expect the same kind of fast moving swap as last month. We have never had that kind of flow in an Offer What You Have Swap before. December is always a difficult month for swaps, but please remember that it is still the responsibility of the person posting the list to get a claim, and a month like this that will probably mean that prices will have to go down quite a bit from last month.

"Your list of offerings: if your list stays up for more than 48 hours before someone claims from it, you must make major changes to it, adding things or allow claimers to add more items together to make a claim"

"you agree to add things to your list and/or reduce prices if noone claims for a couple of days, and keep doing so until claimed, doing your best to keep the swap going"

I'm just watching from the sidelines this round,
but I wanted to throw out a suggestion --
on some of the Ravelry swap threads that are a chain swap like this one,
they have a grace period over weekends & holidays since not as many swappers
are online to check out the goods~
maybe it would help if you extend the time frame to 72 hours during
the rest of December?

Hmm, gavagai, what do you think of changing the rules in the next round and having it be 24 hours instead of 48.  It's hard waiting 2 days for someone to add something.  Usually you know pretty quickly if nothing is claimed.

Title: Re: the Ongoing Offer What You Have Swap is back! - Discussion thread.
Post by: greybird on December 17, 2010 03:18:17 PM
You know, I think both ideas have merit!  What about combining them and having something like:

Monday through Friday (Craftster time) you must update your list after 24 hours if nothing has been claimed.  However, Sat and Sun plus major holidays are excused from this and do not count towards the 24 hour time frame.

Edited to add:  major holidays could be those that the post office is closed?  That would keep it simple and easy for everyone to look up since people sometimes celebrate different holidays.

Maybe?

I think that if 24 hours hits and no bites, it's a pretty good sign that things need to be added/ prices reduced. I am here as well and checking at least daily. I print out my shipping labels to avoid the terrible holiday post office traffic!

Title: Re: the Ongoing Offer What You Have Swap is back! - Discussion thread.
Post by: gavagai on December 17, 2010 11:37:27 PM
I have been thinking about 24 hours as well. The only thing I was concerned about is if people then deliberately start off with higher prices, because they are afraid of them soon getting too low (if you get what I mean). That should be solved by the general recommendation that the next time you post, you should start with the same prices you had the last time you got a claim though (and not go back to higher prices).

My idea about this swap has always been that prices can't get too low. I don't mind at all lowering my prices to 1/4 of what I think they are "really" worth. I can just hope that you all feel the same. It's not about trying to get the correct value for your items. It's about keeping the swap going and having fun! I love going to craftster and seing a new list every time I log on.

I think really major holidays (like Christmas/New Year) that are celebrated in most parts of the craftster world should maybe be excepted from the 24 hour rule (if we add such a rule), but on the other hand, I am online on Christmas day! Who can keep away from craftster just because of a family holiday?  ;D

I am not so keen on a 72 hour rule though. That might just kill the swap. As I said before, my view towards this swap is that it should be flowing, and I am prepared to lower prices a lot to make sure that it will. This swap is not about getting the "right" value for your things. (or at least that is my firm belief!)

Would be happy for more input!

One problem this round has been that people tend to ignore the 48 hour rule, because they think the swap is moving so slow anyway. I think that is not a good way to look at it, and it hurts the swap. When the swap is moving slow we need to make bigger changes more often, not the other way around.

Title: Re: the Ongoing Offer What You Have Swap is back! - Discussion thread.
Post by: craftaddiction on December 18, 2010 07:08:51 AM
I think changing the rule to 24 hours is a good idea. There were some people that I thought were a little high last round, who probably only got claimed because the amount of people. Obviously it is going to slow things down when they post the same list this round. I think it would also be great to change the worth requirement. 5-$15 is a pretty big range. It slows thing down when someone lists items only worth $5 and no one wants to claim them because most of their own list is worth more. How about $10-$15?

It is a rule for the swap, I would remind anyone who doesn't change their list that it could be reflected in their feedback that they didn't live up to the requirements of the swap. Or at least post that in the thread.

Title: Re: the Ongoing Offer What You Have Swap is back! - Discussion thread.
Post by: gavagai on December 18, 2010 10:23:15 AM
I do send PMs to swappers when 48 hours have passed (sometimes a bit later if I am not online at that time, sometimes a bit before, just to remind them) and I do stress that it is a requirement of the swap. Last month there was no need to comment on it in anyone's feedback, but this month it may be. To me it's just a bit surprising that swappers don't feel that they want to follow the rules of the swap. It is not like we are asking for something impossible, just that everyone should be prepared to lower prices and add things until they get claimed. We can not demand a certain kind of sale after a certain time, but a half price sale after 48 hours and then further reductions every 24 hours or so wouldn't be unreasonable, I think.

I was hesitant to take over as an organizer for this swap, because there had then (way back) been discussions about what things on certain lists were "actually" worth and so on. It is not about what the things are "really" worth. It is about what the swappers in this swap feel that they want to claim. If noone wants to claim, the price is too high, no matter what the thing is "really" worth.

I have also thought about thewording in the rules about $5-15. Maybe it should be changed. Maybe it should also be added something about that it's not the $ value that determines if you have put the right price on something. If you get claimed it's the right price. If not, the price is too high. I guess theoretically there might be lists that noone would want to claim from no matter the price (if there were only pottery on there and noone liked pottery or something like that), but frankly I don't think that is what has caused problems.

New list up, go check, and let me know if there's anything you want to change (like partial claims out of groupings and whatnot).

I also think your stuff is great (and I might just go ahead and claim if noone else does). These days ahead are probably difficult ones for getting a claim though, even though I am on craftster almost as much as usual. Christmas Eve is the big day for celebrating Christmas in Sweden though, so I need to go now.  :)

I updated the December round with claims and everything. Still a couple of things that need updating in the November round though. Sorry about that. Will tend to it soon.

I updated everything for the November round now and added feedback for six more swappers (including me).

Now, do we want a January round? I know this swap has been moving reeeaaally slow, but December is a tough month, especially the later half of it. Everyone is busy with Christmas and what not. I would be up for another round in January if you are.  :)

Also we could add a rule saying something like you should update your list if you don't get a claim in 24 hours, and you need to make big changes to it after 48 hours, maybe suggesting a half price sale on everything (just as an example). Also if you get a claim when having a sale it's a good idea to keep the sale prices the next time you post your list. Does that sound fair? I.e. if you're up for another round.

(I also found an ENTIRE plastic tub of craft supplies up in the attic.  Eeeek!)

I hope we do get more people to join, it's better when there are lots, keeps things fresh and moving!

The only thing I can think of is the wording we have to use in the PM when we send - I do this when I can, but the claims list sometimes isn't updated for a while so I'm not sure about the "correct wording" to use. Other than that it looks good!

Yes, I know. I should have mentioned that. The most important thing is to write who it's to and from and what's in the claim, and at least approximately when the send by date is.

Another swapper joined today! We are gaining speed!  :D

Also, just a general reminder that you need to keep your list updated. First major update needs to be made no later than 48 hours after first posting (if you do not get a claim by then). Then you need to keep making bigger changes, lowering prices/adding things to make sure to get a claim as soon as possible!

And yes, I know there are very few swappers this round, but still, it shouldn't be impossible to get the swap going, I think, since we are now six people. It would help if more people joined though. Comeon people! Please join us!  :)

All of my pick twos are pick three now, please let me know if you'd like a combination of items, I will take almost any claim at this point.

This is a difficult round, and I don't mean to blame anyone. Please don't feel bad about not getting a claim at this point. It will take longer than most months. As long as people change their active list once in a while, I for one do not blame anyone for not getting a claim.

A couple of years ago I was sent a parcel from a swapper on the OWYH who was moving house and she sent me all the bits that were left in her OWYH list at the end of that month. I  deleted my pms and because the member went off craftster for while I can't remember who it was - it might be Calluna though???? It was from the West coast of the USA to me in the UK. If this rings any bells please let me know as I'd love to make it up to you somehow!

LOL, yes, that was me! Fortunately I broke my habit of buying neat old things just for ongoing swaps...but it was fun at the time, as long as I ignored how much I was paying the post office!  :D

I just added books to my offerings.  :)

I know! I think everyone has swap fatigue at the moment. I am desperately trying to think of things to add that won't cost a fortune to post. I've been ill all week (but feeling better today) so haven't updated for a while. I can't upload photos as i'm using an ipad (my laptop is playing up) so will add some descriptions of extras later.
Is anyone looking for anything in particular? Yarn? Fabric? I probably have some stamps and papercraft things too. Will update in the evening as i am going to a sewing day today.

This month has been slow, and I am guessing we should not continue with another round in February? or what do you think? How many would be interested?

One thing though, and this is a general reminder. When the swap is slow, that is not a reason not to update a list. It is really the other way around. We have discussed this numerous times, and I have had the feeling that you people agree with me on this? When the swap is slow you need to continuously update your list until claimed. That may mean that you have to lower your prices to a level you find ridiculous, but it still is the person posting the list who is responsible for getting a claim (excepting maybe the first few days of a swap if there are only a couple of swappers there). When the swap has stalled, it is so much more important that the person with the active list is really active!

Title: Re: the Ongoing Offer What You Have Swap is back! - Discussion thread.
Post by: gavagai on February 02, 2011 02:14:10 AM
And speaking of being active, this slow swap has made me sleepy as well, I think. I haven't updated the claims list as I should have, and I will put a note about that in my feedback.

Thanks for organizing Gavagai! Although I love this swap I think it would be a good idea to leave it for a couple of months like we did before.

Title: Re: the Ongoing Offer What You Have Swap is back! - Discussion thread.
Post by: calluna on February 02, 2011 09:31:37 AM
Much agreed...I think 4 rounds per year would keep it more active. If there's only a small handful of people involved, there might be nothing a person has that appeals to any of them, no matter how often they update their offerings or how nice their offerings are. Offering a custom item is helpful, as long as it can be made without having to purchase any more supplies! That, of course, would defeat the purpose.  :)

First of all, calluna, thank you so much for stepping in and doing a fantastic job. I have been ill for a couple of weeks, which is not an excuse for not telling you so. I should have posted about this before.

Today I have tried to update feedback and other things for the Offer What You Have Swaps (nov-jan), and I think most of it should be o.k. now (again, big thanks to calluna). The only thing I can see that is left when it comes to feedback is "Renstar to Giddiup222 - A bundle of at least 50 4inchx4inch squares of fabric and Sequins, buttons, some beeds & length of elastic" from the November round, and my own feedback for the January round (will wait with that until this is all sorted out). Negative feedback will be given to Renstar if Giddiup222 still hasn't received (I just PMed her).

I will start by making this post and hope that you all see it. Please comment or send a PM to me if I have missed something.

Just wondered if I've missed a new thread or something. I still have a big box of supplies sitting here in limbo, as I can't get rid as they are all on the last list posted on the last swap. Can someone let me know when the next swap is going to be started? is there any interest in a new one (I can't host, sorry)? thanks

I would love another round as well. I am a bit hesitant to host though, since a couple of times I have had a family crisis or gotten ill, so I didn't handle my organizer duties that well (sorry  :-[). If someone else wants to host, that would be fine with me. My advice for the new organizer would be to be as active as they can, reminding people that it is every swappers duty to keep the swap going, no matter what offerings it takes.  :D I love this swap, but truly hates it when it stalls. That is just so frustrating for everybody.

I do apologise for holding up the swap - although I get the feeling it has run out of steam as no one else wants my unenviable position of being held over to next months! If there is anything else that would help you pick me please give me ideas!!!

I wonder if there is a way that this issue could be addressed in future rounds.  I agree with sajona that her position of being in swap limbo for a few months is undesireable.   I think that is one of the reasons the swap stalls so much after a flurry of claims as people are afraid they will get stuck with that position.

Could the rules be amended so that this problem could be taken care of?   I have a possible idea.  :D

This next upcoming round only:
What if when the swap loses steam and the organizer thinks it might be best to let the swap rest for a few rounds if the organizer finishes up the swap by doing one of two things:
1 - making a claim from the last list and closing the swap
2 - if there is nothing the organizer can use, then maybe the last person on the list could instead craft the organizer a smallish wisty surprise?  Or maybe the organizer could also think of a few themes and then you can craft something using either the wist or the themes?   The themes might be a good way to avoid the "I can't make anything on their wists" problem.   I'm not sure what the size should be... maybe a couple smalls or perhaps one medium?   The swap rules say a claim is in the $5 - $15 dollar range.

All future rounds:
After this next round, all future rounds, the organizer puts their list up as the first list in the chain.   When the swap shuts down for a few months due to lack of interest, then the organizer completes the chain and shuts down the swap by doing one of two things:
1 - making a claim from the last list and closing the swap
2 - the last listed person crafts a smallish swap package for the organizer (just like above) based on the organizers likes.

the only real difference between these two is that in the next round the organizer won't be the first person on the list so effectively the would be getting one extra package on this next round only.   I think though that for all the extra effort an organizer goes through and for the peace of mind for knowing that the swap won't be hanging over that last person's head for a few months waiting for the next round to start that it would be worth it.    After this next round, all further round the organizer's list would be first in the chain and then when they finished the chain the number of claims would be equal and fair.

I know the idea of this swap is to offer what you have, but I would really like the option to craft a swap package if I was the last person on the list in order to neatly tie up the swap.   :)   It would also make me far less hesitant to be that last person in the chain.

More thoughts... I wanted to add that this option to claim the last person on the list by the organizer should be reserved for when its time to close it for a few rounds...not each month.  I think if the swap is going to be open for another round the next month, then the first person in the list should be the last person in the prior round.   The organizer only closes the chain when they are ready to shelve the swap for a bit.  Hope that makes sense.    :)

Any thoughts?

I am not sure that I see the problem here. When I am the organizer and the swap has been resting for a few months, I usually ask the last poster if they are up for another round or would agree to post their list anyway. However, I also try to make clear that they do not in any way have to do so. As an organizer I am happy to post the first list even if it means I will get one claim less.

In the Ongoing ATC Swap the organizer takes the first and last posts each month and in the Ongoing Wish Swap the organizer closes the list at the end of each month and uses the last post from that month to be the first post on the following month.  I think you can choose to do whatever fits the organizer and the swap.  :)

Oh, I didn't realize it was optional for the last poster to rejoin or not.  It sounded like it was mandatory to rejoin and if that were the case, then it would feel like being in swap limbo and that would be undesirable.   Well, in that case I guess there isn't a problem then.   :)     Thanks for explaining that!

I am not sure now what it says in the rules, but I think it's fair to make the last poster post the first list if the swap goes on to the next month, but that you should not be forced to post months later, being in swap limbo as you call it.
